Someone please correct me if I am wrong but please don't flame me.
Other than UI features, will there be any benefit to an ICS ROM made from source? Won't we still have to use a gingerbread kernel? From what I understand, there will be zero performance gain from it until we get a kernel source from HTC. Am I wrong in thinking that? Or will someone be able to make an ICS kernel for it when the source for ICS drops?
The reason I ask is because the most exciting thing to me about ICS is the hardware acceleration.

I remember reading somewhere that ICS is supposed to take advantage of the dual core power of cell phones. Not 100% sure but I want ICS because of the looks and the UI

We have HTC kernel source its just not fully complete (unfortunately) but toastcfh was able to tweak it to work. The only reason you see custom kernels is because of source. ICS does impelement the first mobile Linux 3.0 kernel. Once ICS source drops, one of the first things to do is merge our kernel source with the new 3.0 kernel and then go from there. Not only will ICS have full 2D acceleration throughout the entire UI the new kernel should bring a few benefits at the least just slight overall improvements. Although it will be interesting to see how large the new AOSP roms will end up being. Google has specifically said that ICS will a bit on the heavy side and even ruled out a nexus one upgrade due to out-of-date hardware. Our HTC shooter's will definitely be just fine but just a thought. To answer your question though yes, expect major UI improvements and "under-the-hood" speed improvements. Due to the nature of open source we will be able to take advantage almost every enhancement ICS brings.

I understand what you are saying. The biggest thing I was wondering is, will we have a true ICS kernel as soon as ICS source drops. I think I remember some phones having to use froyo kernels with gingerbread ROMs. I could be wrong but I think that's right.

Even if the kernel source isnt released yet, its gonna take months for a full working ics aosp rom. UI improvements, the UI is a huge improvement. Seems like android was rebuilt to me. Hardware improvements. Its worth it.

Toast has an AOSP kernel. Once the ICS source gets dropped (which includes kernel source) toast and others will merge our drivers and such with the new AOSP Linux 3.0 kernel

I think I remember what you are talking about with og Evo. The kernel source only gives us libs and drivers and such that we modify to be able to use AOSP roms. Once the EVO 3D officially gets ICS the process of making custom kernels becomes a bit easier but will not necessarily improve performance. Idk if you had an og Evo but toastcfh as well as others from savaged-zen had a functional Linux 2.8 kernel while all stock android kernels were on 2.5 & 2.6. Once we get any kind of source at all we can get a Linux 3.0 ICS kernel with all of the new benifits it entails. Completed (which we don't really have) or updated source just makes the process easier

I understand it should have gone in Q&A but I personally never look in there and figured that was the same for many people here. Figured something like this should be in general, where a lot of people would see it and answer the question or enjoy reading the answers. With all of the bull crap posted in the general section lately, thought it would be a nice change to have something that many people would be interested in. Thought people would rather see this here than another SGSII vs 3D thread, or some other bull****. If I am wrong, mods feel free to move it but I think most people will agree.

I am here today to discuss all the possible ways of getting pics on your photon, though none of them fully baked.
1. Of all the tegra . Devices with a working port, the xoim is your best bet. Mainly because the Xoom and the photon have similair boards and partly because the the idea of ICS is being able to bridge the phone tablet gap.
2. We have working cyanogon mod now, and cyanogen has working tegra cm9 builds, if one of the cm7 porters is up to the challenge than the cm9 builds are your best bet.
3. The hardest of all solutions, is waiting for some super hacker to post their build of Photon ICS, unless someone already has a buil going than there is a seriously low chance of this choice seeing the light of day.
But this thread is also here to say that we have very good devs here and should be happy with all the work we have. If you do not believe me take a look at the atrix or X2 forums because the photon blows them out of the water.
Merry Christmas to all and a happy new year!

I have faith in Motorola releasing official ICS to our Photon. This is their flagship phone on Sprint, and I don't see any reason to not get the update.
And yes we have awesome devs that do an awesome stuff with our phones.

Id rather wait for an official ICS build some time next year than a half assed port to be honest. We need few more issues fixed in our cm7 port before cm9 shows its face. Cybik is taking care of cm7 and is doing a very good job. I don't know if the photon is officially supported by cm yet but i know he submitted it. In a nutshell I don't think we should be worried about ics ports yet when our CM7 GB port isn't fully completed. There's still a few kinks that need to be ironed out...

I think this is one of those YMMV situations. I've had CM7 on my Electrify for a month and have had practically no ROM related issues, our devolopers have been nothing short of outstanding. Thank you all foe your hard work!
As for ICS, I have faith that someone out there is either already working on something at least on the side or CM9 is closer than we think. But if we have to wait Gill next year either from a dev or motorola, so be it. Quality takes time.

Now my reasoning behind this was I looked for the moto device most similair to the photon with tegra 2. The xoom looks nothing like the photon, but it has working ics and has- parts wise-many identical parts and not just cpu, gpu stuff. Its more than a theory in my opinion but than again I don't have a photon (check the signature). If you can say out right it would be easier to start from scratch than work with the xoom, I can respect that but I always like clarification!

make no mistake using hotfixes from teh xoom is highly intelligent considing how much is close.. but joker can even tell you.. not everything from the atrix (our sister phoen) can even be just ported over without some modding.. :/
that is what my point is... VERY rarley do you have phones close enough to be able to just change out files willy nilly (the htc vision was an amazingly awesome phone for being able to do this) and the nexus s and the nexus s 4g are fairly universal when it comes to kernels for the most part

That's because ICS was a major upgrade from Gingerbread, especially at the kernel level. It was more of a rewrite than an upgrade.
Hence, this is looking for ICS libraries. It's possibly also looking for an ICS kernel which we don't have AND won't have unless Verizon decides to release ICS for the X2.
We are at the mercy of Verizon on this one.
Remember, CM9 will still have the GB kernel, not an ICS one since we cannot replace the kernel due to the locked bootloader. Again, at the mercy of Verizon AND Motorola on the locked bootloader.
I've been waiting for Chrome on Android for the entire time I've had an Android (about a year and a half). I just came across an article about on another website, read the whole thing with excitement, and then shot a baby when I read it was only for ICS. WTF?! That's very disappointing to me. Any thoughts as to why they did that? Maybe because it's beta and wanted limited exposure at first?
If they just now started working on getting chrome out then it really doesn't make sense to release it on gingerbread and ics. I would expect that it would be released for their newer os rather than the one that is going to be phased out. Maybe once they get all the bugs worked out they will release a version usable on gingerbread, so phones that won't be updated, or even new phones that aren't as powerful as the phones sporting ics, will be able to use it.

Because we are stuck on the gingerbread kernel, CM9 may not work unless Motorola releases ICS for DX2. As stated earlier, apk needs libraries from the ICS kernel. The only other option is to hack the actual apk.

I think Moto will stick to the timeline they have posted. ICS has been in development for the Photon for a while now and from all I have read with the re-structuring of Moto Mobility it seems they are pushing to get devices on the latest Android releases. Sounds to me like Google wants Moto to get on an update schedule similar to what the Nexus devices are on. This should not be a problem with Moto not having to support so many devices in the future.
I do hope that if/when ICS does come to the Photon it is a better release than what other manufacturers have pushed out. Everyone I have heard from that has gotten ICS hates it and wants GB back. Of course the best bet is to wait until our developers get the proper drivers and incorporate the missing pieces into custom roms and run those.

i don't care whether we get the official ICS, or even the drivers from another phone as long as the drivers are taken, and can be used towards all of the problems with the custom ICS and JB roms i will be happy. Hopefully if we cant get drivers from another phone the official ICS will get rolled out soon.
This is a seriously dead topic that's been discussed over and over and over again. 12 months in a year, 4 quarters in a year. 12 divided by 4 is 3. Each quarter is three months long. Q3 ends with September. Q4 begins with October. Atrix ICS before end of September. Photon ICS before end of December. Atrix and photon = same hardware. Meaning, our jb and ICS ROMs will be perfectly stable shortly after the atrix ICS gets released.

captivate ics wont really change terribly much. look at the xoom ics or even gtab 10.1. all used diff camera sensors/wrappers so sure the chipset is the same.. but the crap that is needed for stable isnt :/
unless something has drastically changed since the last time i talked to joker the camera was the last big hurdle?

Those tablets use a different type of Tegra 2, that's why. Photon/ Atrix= AP20H, Xoom/ Galaxy Tabs= T20. The captivate uses the same chip set as these Moto Tegra devices. People from the Atrix forums have started looking into the captivate leaks for anything, just be patient and wait for the news

understandable that its the same tegra chipset but that doesnt mean its the same camera module. this is a different manufacturer we are talking about (samsung at that so it actually has a decent camera unlike moto)
Unless you're stuck with a locked bootloader or fortunate enough to be in a WiMax market, head over to the developer's forum and load one of the many ICS or JB based ROMs. Joker's CM10 based ROM is as stable or better of an experience than I ever had with factory.

I think there is plenty of development for the DNA. What could you possibly want? Everything has already been listed. It's leagues ahead of the Droid Razr I used to have. Let's not forget that a new method for S-off is still pretty new. That's the major reason why development was lagging behind and since then it's been booming. You already have several different 4.2.2 AOSP roms to choose from. Then you have the Sense 4+ and 5 roms that are perfect. I personally don't see how development is so bad.

There are no two ROMs that are the same right now in the original android development section.
If you go try each one out you will see that they really are very different.

Is it because they are mostly built from the same base? I can see that being confusing to some, thinking there is no real development going on.. However, the same base != the same rom. There is real development going on for our device and all other devices on these forums.. I for one feel we have plenty to choose from and things are only going to get better and easier down the road... May have an official Sense 5 rom for the devs to play around with if Verizon gets things going.. I love it here!! Am I wrong? :good: :highfive::highfive:

That was sarcasm. In other words most of our roms have a completely different feel. On the GNex there were a lot of dups for sure.
Considering that this is a Verizon exclusive, locked bootloader, low popularity, CDMA phone, I'd say that delopement here is going pretty good. We have plenty of Roms, consisting of stock Sense 4 based, Sense 5 based, and CM/AOSP based. We even have an alpha build of Sense 5 4.2.2! We also have decent kernel development, 2 or 3 for AOSP and several for Sense. I've come to trust @.torrented and @pio_masaki for giving you the best overall user experience and working with the user to fix and repair not only their ROMs but miscellaneous bugs completely unrelated to them. These two have made it a truly great dev community. Because of these two, I am perfectly fine with the stage of development on our devices. If either of you are reading this, I love you guys!
If extensive development is what you want, get off Verizon and buy a Nexus 4 or a Google Edition HTC One/SGS4

I don't think it has "low popularity" lol... Considering up till a month or so ago it was top selling if not near so on Verizon.

Don't get me wrong, its an amazing phone that could easily compete with the SGS4, but it's Verizon exclusive so it never made it to that status. It was a mistake on Verizons and HTCs part to make this beast a carrier exclusive.

well, considering that verizon sells the iphone and the SGS4 (and the SGS3 if you want to talk about 2012), will them having close to 50% and 30% market share, respectively, i dont really see how the DNA could have been anywhere near a top seller. not to mention the note 2 and others. i would probably label this phone "unpopular". most people have never even heard of this phone. i'm glad they are making the "droid" branding exclusive to motorola. the DNA's exclusivity to Verizon killed the awesome potential this phone had. but still, i think we have awesome development. except, i dont understand why we have 5 million aosp roms.
