[Q] removing stock apps - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i've finally rooted my phone and now in the process of removing stock apps.
at the moment i'm using "terminal emulator" to remove the apps.
is there a faster way of doing it, maybe an app i can download that will REMOVE the stock apps of my choice rather than freezing them?

Titanium backup can uninstall as well as freeze. Go the pro version well worth it.

i'm completly new to the titanium back up, i've got the free version (pay days not untill the 19th lol) at the moment i'm not 100% sure what i am doing with that so been sticking with the emulator but thats a long winded process as i plan on removing quite a few of the stock apps. any advice would be much appreciated if it can be done with the free version, otherwise i will have to wait til my pay day as i cleared the bank for work stock today

Learn to use TB. It's well worth it and you'll never look back, particularly the Pro version.

Not really deleted?
I agree; Ihave used Titanium Backup for a long time on many phones. I usually keep a stock rom but use titanium to delete bloatware and integrate app updates into the rom. Works great and helps free up memory.
However, I just recently bought a used s2 and have faced some challenges. Namely, deleting bloatware freed up almost no space, less than a megabyte. I suspected something was amiss, so I tried converting Google+ from a system app to a user app. No more space freed, and I don't have room to convert it back to a system app. Does anyone have an idea why I am unable to free up space on the room? (A certain amount of free space is necessary to be able to integrate updates.)

It has been quite a while since I used it, but as I recall, in the free version you have to manually approve each install, so it is a bit of a process. I prefer just to let Google restore all my apps and then use TiBu to selectively restore data to certain "critical" apps.
With the basic version TiBu will ask you to approve each app individually. The Pro version does it as one big batch, which is much easier. Download the free version and then pay for and download the Pro without uninstalling the free one.
the best way to back up a phone is to put it in the bed of a pick up truck. Get in. put the truck in reverse and step on the gas.

What's the best way to back up apps?

I've been using titanium backup when I flash a new rom. I usually do a full data wipe then, once the new rom is installed, i restore all of my apps and data.
The problem I'm having with titanium backup is that I have to individually install each app which is extremely time consuming.
Does anyone know of a more efficient method of backing up my apps?
BTW, I know you can make a .zip file using titanium but I wasn't able to flash it.

I just spent a couple bucks for the Pro key, which allows for batch restoring/backups. Completely worth it when you're wiping and flashing on a daily basis.
I agree. I bought the Pro key. I think buying it through the Amazon App store will bypass any currency conversion issues, possibly. (It seems like when I bought Titanium Backup Pro, I got charged an extra dollar because of the currency conversion....I don't think I had that problem with another app in a non-local currency via Amazon.)
I am seconding what he said. The Pro key is well worth the couple of bucks or whatever it costs. You just hit the restore and let it do it's thing. No prompts.
At $5.99, this will be one of the most expensive apps I have purchased but I'll give it a try if you guys say it's worth it.

It was the second app (of two) I ever purchased (the other being The Sims for $1), and it was totally worth it. Titanium Backup is simply a great program. The batch functionality alone is worth the price- Dropbox integration is a very nice perk (along with a few other Pro features).
I astro for back ups
I bought the Pro version of Titanium Backup after my first slow and tedious backup without the batch function. Plus the automatic backups are great.
i use my backup pro
Gonna have to invest in this as well. Thanks.
Alrighty. Just purchased and backing up as I type. I'll let you guys know.
Why doesn't google market keep track of the free apps we download?
That way when we first sync with google again it would at least get all our apps installed again.

That would be cool but it would still give a prompt for every single app which takes forever and is super annoying. I bought the Pro key and installed the new Nameless rom but now I have to reroot. I'll let you guys know how it worked out

Pro key was my first purchase from the market. I don't regret it in the slightest. I always do a batch backup before flashing a rom and then batch restore after. I consider it essential if you are rooted.

It does, actually, in stock Froyo and above, but for some reason the ROMs we have on the Fascinate right now don't.
Normally, when you activate your Google account on a newly flashed phone, all your apps, paid and free, will automatically download as part of your first sync. It doesn't prompt you and it's totally automatic.
I do prefer using TB, though, as Google doesn't backup app data and it can take a really long time to download every app if you have a lot of them. Also, Google's sync occasionally misses apps or downloads ones that you had uninstalled.

I wonder if I have always done something wrong then, I may be new to the fascinate rom scene but I flashed multiple roms on my og droid and they never seemed to give me more than the paid apps
in the market.
admittedly these were aosp roms not stock verizon roms maybe that had something to do with it?
I have the paid version off TB as well but when flashing from say a TW rom to an AOSP rom I prefer to download the apps from the market everything seems to run smother when I do it this way.

Agreed...titanium b/u is worth every penny...on a side note, for me going into settings-> applications-> manage applications-> running applications and going to market (or in my case since I'm on ukb...its tsm market) and hitting clear data...then when I go to the market and hit my apps it will show all of my apps both free and purchased, assuming I don't have any of them frozen because frozen apps won't get recognized by the market...it doesn't start downloading on its own but at least I have a list of complete app download history should I need an update.

How do I Freeze apps?

I'm unlocked, and rooted. I just want to get rid of some of the bloat. I don't want to flash a custom Rom, yet. With other phones I remember just renaming the apk file. I can't quite remember how to do that. Also how would I do it with titanium backup? I see the is an option for freezing apps, but it seems to be to freeze all apps, I certainly don't want that.
Is there a list out there with all the apps that are safe to rename/ freeze?
Any help would be appreciated

Alright, freezing with titanium is simple. You can just go to the list of apps, long press the item, and then select freeze. If you do a batch freeze, it's faster, but this is just as easy. As for the list, yes, it's in the forum.
EDIT: Here's the list.
You can check out this tool. It's a script that will remove all the bloat for you.
You can also use it as a reference on which apps are safe to remove.

Yeah, that's easy too. I would suggest a nandroid backup before you do this one, though, just because I heard it doesn't allow everything to come back if you rebloat. But that's a good list of stuff you can freeze.
put your phone in the freezer for an hour. That should be long enough.

Check in the CleanTool thread in the dev section, between Scott and myself there are several lists. My list is all preinstalled packages on the Rezound, with apk, package name, and "normal" name.
My suggestion is to build a list of the packages you want to ditch, then move them to a separate directory. Reboot and make sure everything is still working the way you want it to. That way you have the package backed up in case something goes wrong.

I believe you need the paid version to freeze but you can uninstall the bloat you don't want for free. You could just backup the apps you remove before you uninstall them. Or get the key on the market for a couple of bucks and then freeze them up.
Freezing apps with titanium is a paid feature. I think Root Uninstaller has a freeze option that might be available. Or you can just remove them if you know you don't want them.
Just click on the app in the list, the option isn't under the long press menu.

If you haven't bought TB I'd def recommend it. It's one of those things that you just have to have when doing the root thing. I bought it like 2 years ago and I still use it ALL of the time
Also, if you're running ics, it's a built I'm feature. You just go to any apps details and disable it.

You need to uninstall any updates first for the crapware apps then the disable function will be visible in stock ics.

My phone is very slow. Please help!!

Hi all,
I bought my neo v last week and it was brilliant for 4-5 days. But nowadays the phone response very slow. When I come out of any app the icons take time show up. Earlier it happened only when I came out of games like temple run. Now I've uninstalled it. Now even when I came out if messaging or camera, the icons take time to build.
Sometimes during a call incoming, it takes long time to show the contract details.
Should I do something to check if everything is fine with the phone. I really doubt it is the speed of a 1 ghz processor. Also the ram has only around 50 mb free even only music player is running.
I've installed avira, which I suspect could be the reason for this slowdown. Im unable to uninstall either.
Could someone please help me with these for a android new comer? Please let me know if u needed more details to help me out.

Avira could be the cause, is it installed from market?
Find it Play or the phone's manage application screen to uninstall.
If it is still that slow then try a master reset, anyway it is just 4-5 days' thing to lose.
use superchager v6

Yes I've now uninstalled needless talk and power managers. It's getting better. But still I've only around 75 mb ram free. If you want to stop the bloatwares, you really need to root. You can freeze them or uninstall them permanently, just make some back ups. Have you tried resetting it? I mean factory settings reset? You should try it. Dont install battery savers, task killers and antivirus. It may slow down your phone and eats up your battery. Its better to restart your phone daily to free ram and reset it. If you have done everything but it still becomes slow, contact your phone dealer. You just might have yourself a factory defect phone
like what other said, root your phone or better yet, use custom roms. those bloatware is eating your ram thats why your phone is sluggish. as pandemic said use v6 supercharger to handle the memory.
It is a primitive sort of advice but if u don't want to root your phone...then try auto memory manager and set a parameter to autokill background processes...the processes u don't want to be killed can be whitelisted.
And try some kind of startup manager to prevent unwanted apps from launching by their own...but even then some of them would initialize bcoz of other events...that's where auto memory manager comes to play.
But last advice...its really a very good idea to root your phone to gain full control...service centres really don't care if you are rooted or not unless you unlock the bootloader.
Edit: am not sure if startup managers require root or not...it would have been stated in the app description.

You'll need a root explorer. The apps are in /system/app and /system/priv-apps.
BUT BE CAREFUL!!! If you remove the wrong ones it won't boot.
There's a thread I think in the International forum that has apps you can remove. We'll have some different apps though.
If you remove the wrong app and end up not booting, you'll either have to use adb or LGFlashtool to fix it.
Im sure someone will have a list shortly.
"System app remover (root)" from the play store works great for me. It makes app backups before uninstall.
You might be better off using Titanium Backup to just freeze apps first, to see if they affect other things unexpectedly. Then you can remove them after a test period.

Also if you can be patient until recoveries can be taken care of then back ups can be done to help insure a trouble free device.

freezing vs removing an app has nothing to do with ram.
For OP, if you have TiBu use that to remove apps. There's a link somewhere in the general G3 forum here that shows which apps are safe to disable, which typically means they are safe to remove as well.
What I was saying is there is plenty of space on root partition. Freezing won't delete the app, but rather prevents it from launching. IMO this is the best way to go. Less crap running, less lag, and you don't have to delete files.
This thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-lg-g3/general/guide-how-to-restore-sprint-lg-g3-ls990-t2852042
After following this procedure I have no more sprint apps on my phone.
The image provided didn't have them pre-installed.
That's another way to go about it. Safer? Probably not than freezing.
