The other day I was using my camera and trying out different effects when it just froze. The shutter/setting buttons were all there but the viewer was black and I couldn't click on anything. I couldn't even hit back to exit the app, only by hitting home. Even force closing the app/clearing cache and opening it back up didn't help - had to reboot. Then the same thing happened shortly after, but hasn't happened since.
Has this happened to anyone else?
weird. That kinda happened to me the other day. But i dont recall if I was playing with effects first, but screen was all just black (no, my hand wasn't in front of it lol) and couldn't push buttons or back. Had to hit Home. But, FCing it worked for me. Minor glitch. Much more minor than my general shutter lag and blurry pics. Need to go to a store to compare my hardware.

Yeah the fact that I was playing with effects might be coincidence. Luckily it hasn't happened again, but saying that I haven't been using the camera much.
But you might want to look into the shutter lag because mine takes pics super fast!

I haven't had that specific problem, but the "shutter" lag here also - very frustrating. Hold shutter release down, listen to the "burst" mode shoot what sounds like 15 - 20 photos, review and find 3.
It's maddening. Although I think it's a lighting situation... still. Don't make a shutter clicking sound if you aren't actually making a photo..

I'm with you there, I wouldn't say I have shutter lag, but a lot of the times it will make 2 clicks when I only take 1 photo, 3 clicks for 2 photos etc. Always seems to be one more shutter sound. Obviously it's not a lag issue like yours is, but it's clear that the phone just plays the continuous shutter sound when holding the button down, rather than the click sound corresponding with each picture taken. Can be annoying.

Okay... seems like a minor issue but it's driving me nuts. I have no idea how long it's been an issue. I just found out today when I needed to take some photos in a quiet setting.
As long as my "Capture Tone" setting in my camera app is checked (allowing the shutter sound) the camera works fine. But when I uncheck it (to silence the shutter sound), the camera will not take a photo. Just in case, I tried in all resolution settings.
When I uncheck that setting and then go touch the "shutter" button to take a photo, it acts like it is trying to take the picture, then makes a strange click that I can actually *feel* in my phone, then it just goes back to the live viewfinder view as if it's ready to take a photo without having taken the photo I just attempted to take!
Then if I go check the "Capture Tone" setting, everything works fine! Any ideas how to resolve this or what may have caused this issue?

That does seem odd. If you're bootloader unlocked with CWM, maybe give the droid 3 camera a shot. The checkbox worked, and took a silent picture for me..
the camera settings in build.prop can be modified, I believe they're towards the bottom. There is a setting for the shutter tone there, I would mess with that. make a backup first.
I dont have this prob on Alien#4, I disabled shutter sound on day one and have taken at least a hundred pics since. Before Alien I had experienced the strange internal click vibration you spoke of, but not since.
I'm not sure if I've just never noticed it before but after muting the camera shutter sound by turning the ringer down before opening the camera app, I now can hear a slight 'tick' or 'click' when I tap to focus. It's nothing like the 'clickity clicks' my OG Droid used to make when starting the camera BUT it does concern me a bit. I baby my phone/ haven't dropped it or had an impact etc.
[Q]: Does anyone else out there in XDA land hear this sound?
Thanks,
Derek
SEARCH!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1361406&highlight=camera+clicking+noise
I feel like it's the normal sound I'd expect from a focusing lens... every digital camera i'd ever had made that noise...
I did a search but apparently I either didn't use the right key words or am totally incompetent (which happens after a few... )
Thanks.
The search here really isn't that great. I alwts use Google to search xda and its a million times better

Hi iv recently noticed when i start the camera app up and lighty tap the back of the phone the camera starts to make a buzzing noise then when i tap again it stops has anyone else had a simlar prooblem... im on 2.3.5 XXKI4 not rooted... cam ver.. ONEF01
I'm having these symptoms sometimes too. The buzzing seems to come from the LED-lamp and by tapping the LED it disappears but not always. If I change the focus point in the picture the buzzing stops.
The problem comes and goes and I haven't done any more research on the issue.
Exactly the same for me, iv found that the problem is worse if the led camera light had been on for a while and usualy i have to flick between video and pic camera then it starts buzzing like crazy. Is now stopped very strange i hope its more software then hardware..
My phone does this "buzzing" too. I'm on SLIM ICS 4.0 now, but it happened when i was on GB too. I think is related to the focus mechanism, as it stops if i refocus while i'm in camera app. It also starts sometimes when i toggle on the torch from the statusbar, but it stops if i gently "hit" the phone in the camera area...
So...it seems and i hope is a software problem...
It's the camera lens vibrating very quickly, if you look at the screen you will see a "motion blur" on the live image until the lens focuses on something and it will stop.
I sent my GS2 back for this and various other issues, Samsung fixed only one problem and sent the phone back without looking at the camera it seems.
Happens on GB and ICS.. Didn't happen until around 9 months of use, from new..
I think this is a fault that Samsung should take seriously..

It´s normal.
I think too its the focus of the lense. Cause it make this when i tap to focus anywhere
It isn't normal for sure. Something like this can't be normal. But we can't do anything so we have to live with it
Just trying to work out if I have a duff or not. The shutter button seems extremely sensitive when pressed halfway, only need to barely touch it when focusing. Not generally an issue but when in gallery, the slightest touch will open the camera which is very annoying.
Is this normal?
They do it as well as me. Try another galleries, QuicPic example, there do not do it

Thanks! Good tip I never thought of that!
Often times the camera on my AT&T is very slow for like 20 to 30 seconds after I open it. It cannot even refresh the screen and show me what the camera is seeing...it is very jerky and refreshes once every few seconds at best.
Then after 20-30 seconds it seems to work fine with no lag.
It makes it almost impossible to capture a quick shot....I miss whatever I wanted to shoot until the camera calms down and starts behaving.
It does not happen every time...maybe 25% to 50%....have not found a pattern to it yet.
Anyone else seeing this?
I haven't seen this particular issue, but there are times when the focus takes way too long and it ends up taking me 1-2 extra seconds to take the shot, which by the time it captures the image, the moment is too late.

It sounds like you have HDR enabled, try to experiment with this setting

If it is this, that's disappointing. My S7 edge didn't have any issues with HDR.
Not seeing anything like the OP issue on start up. The FV-5 camera is my slowest to start up and takes a second or two. Next slowest would be the LG app in auto and the GCAM port with the LG being just slightly slower. Launching the LG app with the shortcut into manual mode is fastest to launch.
As for the delay while shooting, I see it if I have noise reduction, RAW or HDR enabled. The GCAM is even slower, way slower, at HDR though. I expected the HDR slowdown. The NR and RAW slowdowns were a little bit of a surprise.
By it's very nature, HDR is slow and finicky. It needs more than one frame to compare and blend, ideally at least three. As the shutter speed slows down, your total "black out" (a term I'm borrowing from DSLR shooting) will increase. Then you have the processing time. Google splits the processing out into two parts and it takes a while in total. The LG camera app seems to be doing it all in one go. So I'm not really all that bothered by the time it is taking.
The use of the term black out does remind me of a possible reason why activating Noise Reduction might increase time. There's a couple ways of going about it and one of the two ways used in DSLRs is to take a second black frame. The shutter closes after the actual exposure then a second exposure is taken with the shutter closed. A map, of sorts, is made of spots where there's signal noise and amp glow coming off of the sensor and the processing is applied accordingly. This increases black out time to at least 1.5x, if not 2x, depending on the application within a DSLR. Then there's always a little delay to process and write to memory. I'm not saying that this is 100% what is going on but it is a possibility. Looking at a shot I did last night, it's definitely worth it if it is.
Lastly, I found out early on that when this camera shoots RAW, it fires off two different frames (an unprocessed frame and a processed frame) instead of shooting just one and storing both a processed and unprocessed version of the same frame. Again, the slower the shutter speed, the longer this is going to take. Add in time to process the jpeg and to write the unprocessed RAW file to memory. I haven't tried shooting RAW on the GCAM port to see how it handle it. I know FV-5 is slow when shooting RAW too but never really looked closely to see how it's handling the shooting.

Long press on the camera app icon.
You will get a list of options with "handles" off to one side of their respective bubbles.
Find the one you want and drag it onto your home screen.
That new shortcut will now launch directly into whatever option you picked.
