[Q] Walkman app sudden freezing - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

I'm experiencing sudden freezing of Walkman app on my LWW (running stock ICS 4.0.4), and it sounds to me like some background process/application is hogging the CPU, causing Walkman to sound like a scratched cd. It does not happen often, but when it happens, it's really annoying. I never had those kind of problems before, when i used Winamp (back on Gingerbread).
Does anyone know some 'quick fix', or maybe a way to change thread priority to 'high' (if such thing exists on android ? - i'm still fairly noobish on that matter) for a Walkman app ?
Thanks

Wrong section man...
That's because you have many running background apps. Check your running apps, n close the unused user app.

FYI Android is based on Linux.
Something is running in background, go check it from Settings-Apps-Running. It will show you what is running at the moment. You can also close some of these.

Yeah, i know Android is based on Linux, i'm just not considering myself as advanced Linux user.
There aren't many backround processes running, i'm using task killer. I also removed most of bloatware. I haven't noticed any application behaving in simmilar manners. None of the games lag or suddenly freeze like this application does, and i'm sure they are much more demanding on CPU/GPU and RAM.
I'm suspecting memory leakage...

Get rid of the taskkiller.
If an app starts, it needs more resources, so more memory and CPU.
Android is built to kill apps itself when it needs memory.

are you using a powersave or some other lower freq governor in lockscreen?
that has a tendency to break up the music when governor has a slow scaling.

It's not an auto app-killer, it kills app only when i want them to.

try a different codec, like mp3,wav,aac whatever.. maybe the songs you have have a broken codec.. this is a very long shot though

first,
app killer is nonsense,
why?
mostly no android apps are actually larger than the ram itself, so multiple apps may be cached in the ram. so it actually helps in loading the app faster from the ram than from the flash memory.
so an app killer is utterly useless since you will just be starting the thing from flash instead of using the cached one thus using more cpu and in turn will also take more time to load.
thus each time you kill something, it's service will try to restart it, using more cpu than your actual intention which was to save it.

Yeah, i guess you're right about the app killer.
I just compaired stock media player CPU usage vs. Winamp, and it does not look good ~35-40% vs. ~8-15%
I think something is broken in Walkman app :S Can anyone check out and tell me how much does your Walkman app uses CPU %?

have you a other Music app installed ?

yeah, like i said, i have winamp installed, which uses much less cpu than the stock player, and never had those kind of issues before.

try clearing data and cache of walkman app.

Didn't help. Cpu usage is still too high. Even tried turning equalizer off.

Autokiller settings?

Hi everybody, as I have updated my phone to 2.1, I find it a bit laggy. I'm asking for your help to improve performances and get it smoothier.
Can anyone tell me which are the best settings for Autokiller to gain speed and improve battery life? I didn't found something obvious and really need to get it smoothier.
Regards.

Also on this - I use TaskPanel - whenever I do a Kill All - it kills the SIM Card and restarts GSM services.
Anyone else seen this?
Otherwise I have the usual set to AutoKill - ignoring anything to do with Clocks, SetCPU, Widgets & Live Wallpaper.
Seems to kill a good 100+mb every time I press it.
edit: hope thats not a hijack
Maybe should you add stckappservice + datatrafixexcepmms + bluetoothheadsetservice processes to your ignore list. (Backupandrestore too)
OK so with ATK I'm always around 160 mb free Memory and many processes come back wathever I do : useragentprovider + custmizationprovider, etc...
Have someone a list of processes which are safe to uninstall and some settings for Autokiller? I really need to get faster and than it was on 1.6.

I've not bothered installing one on 2.1 and found no reason to. The battery life has been significantly increased and although it started off a bit laggy it's smoothed it's self out now.
The following tools really help:
System Panel - monitor what drains battery/cpu time and then decide to throw that app out.
SetCPU - Just make sure to not restrain the cpu too much in hopes of saving that last percent of batt-life, it makes the system lag (ie. lowest while screen off makes the lock-screen/call-screen when turning it back on lag)
Autostarts - control what starts up on events (ie. Startup, battery power level change, etc) helps keep a lot of stuff from unnecessarily checking whether they need to do something.
AutoKiller Memory - Set a Ram-Profile in there. It'll kill tasks that aren't visible/high priority in case the ram gets too low/some other app needs the ram.
Good advise would also be: Don't use Task-Killers whenever you can avoid it. If an app drains too much battery: look for an alternative.
Killing all kinds of apps can do one of two things: either they start up automatically again or they start up on demand again. In both cases a well-coded app that doesn't suck batteries dry will use more batt re-starting and loading everything back into ram than it would if it just stayed there idle. And it'll remove lag by a lot.
Ram is getting powered either way. Use the ram you have. Mine's running constantly below 60MiB of free Ram (usually around 50) and it doesn't experience any lag.
What you also might want to look into is removing useless stuff that SE installed that'll just suck cpu-cycles every chance it gets.
Mine is silky smooth, but I have removed all crapware like moxier, quadrapop, all the Asian language keyboards, wisepilot. Etc. Now its very lean and fast

I think they were more essential in older versions such as 1.6.
Advanced Task Manager.
Kill process every 30 min (differt setting possible)
U can choose task that don't want kill (exclude list)
Works perfectly.
I confirm lag on my 2.1 Xperia. Better some minutes after boot. Why?
Only a Q. Is it just possible to root the 2.1 version?

I don't know why mine is laggy : I've uninstalled useless apps, I've tried many settings for Autokiller, and I don't kill processes which always come back.
I've noticed that my apps are not laggy, only Homescreen. I use ADW Launcher, anyone else noticed its Homescreen latency?

[Q] Task Manager/Killer Apps - Good or Bad after 2.1 update for X10?

Hi All,
I came across a few articles online that suggest that the task managers/killers actually do more harm than good. As far as I know, the Android OS is pretty good at multitasking and managing apps when it is needed to free RAM/CPU.
Would like to hear input specifically regarding the X10 and how these apps affect the system and/or phone specially after the 2.1 update?
Thanks!
Well aince I got to 2.1 Ive havent found the need to download a task killer. Its been stable with 100-140mb constant no matter how many apps I open. But in 1.6 I was getting 20mb if I didnt use task killer lol im guessing the need for task killer as the os upgrades gets less and less as 2.2 really gets ****ed by it lol
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
I've read online about how closing some apps such as mediascape will affect your other media applications cos these services are tied together. But I've always killed all of the ones I don't see myself needing in the next hour or so, and nothing's ever really crashed for me heh.
But I do make it a point to close all apps before running quadrant. Very very pleased with my 730 score

Dumb question, how do you check the RAM?
Best get something like autokiller memory optimizer.
You generally don't need much ram free and if you don't use apps that will eat the hell out of your system in the bg then there's no problem at all.
I haven't used a task killer since switching to 2.1 and there's no performance problems.
I still facing ram problem even after upgrade 2.1, hope no need any task killer anymore once we get 2.2

Not sure if the X10 will get 2.2. Looks like 2.1 is the end of the road for us.
By automatism, after I updated to 2.1 I installed advanced task killer, and at one point I noticed that, whean I had killed apps ammount of free RAM decereased ? So at that point, I uninstalled task killer to check will I notice any change in performance, and there was NONE I could notice, together with same battery duration.
So, so far I vote for no task killers.

Yeah I know we have custom ROMs. I was referring to the official update from SE. I know we will get the UXP update sometime in the future but, not sure if they will go as far as releasing a 2.2 update for the X10?
I don't use it anymore since on 2.1, when using it on 2.1 there's a lot of glitches and it DOES do more harm than good. I get better overall performance without it.

Yes but, according to Android developers, 2.1 automatically closes these idle programs to prevent that. They claim that android is capable of handling this and that any task manger apps are useless.
Read this article http://androinica.com/2010/05/07/go...-imply-task-killermanager-apps-are-pointless/
Since upgrade to 2.1, I installed Task Killer. It cleaned my memory to have available mem from 80MB to 150MB. However, it got some weired behaviour such as
- X10 got lag for a moment when the screen is just back on.
- when the screen is just back on, Wifi cannot reconnect. I have to disable and enable it again.
So I read to post of Android multitasking and I try it by disable AutoKill but keep the widget on the sceen to see the available mem.
My mem keep available around 70-80MB and X10 performance is increase. No more lag or have to re-enable wifi after screen is back on.
I already remove Taskkiller but installed Watchdog instead. Because there are some bad coding software out there which comsume the battery and CPU even you've exited. In such a case, I have to kill those apps manually.
------------------------------------
X10i Generic Android 2.1, rooted, JIT enable.
You want the memory to be as full as possible!!! This means that those often used tasks are there, waiting. This is not Windows! Stop forcing Android to reload everything from scratch! No wonder things are lagging for you.
I've done many experiment about it.
Here's few conclusion, everything you guys claims are all true.
Android is nix base, fulfilling ram mean more cache, more speed.
However, more process mean more CPU usage in some service.
Some softwares are not properly coded, it, unfortunately, doesn't release the resource when it exits
And it's also true that force killing it, will eat more battery because without properly closing, it will eventually open up again
I suggest, instead of killing a task using ATK.
try this one.
http://andrs.w3pla.net/autokiller
It teaches android how to deal with the memory, so it's android who do your dirty job.
Hmm.... I take a look at at autokiller. I think it's better to let Android handle the mem for me. What I'm looking for is an apps that monitor backgound processes/apps that consumes CPU and memory which they should not.
Once identify those apps, I need to kill them individually.
Watchdog paid version suits me well on this purpose. I can put those apps in the blacklist. If they consumes more CPU in the background process, Watchdog will kill them automatically.
I may consider autokiller when I have of low memory warning from my X10 which is currently I have not.

I'm using minfreemanager from market with aggressive option, what gives me ~70MB free RAM by the Android's native taskkiller. It's the best choice as of the 2.1 have a lot services running in backround and nobody should harm them.

[HELP!] Wolf_GB_2.3_TW_V4 Killing my apps!

Hi, I am using Wolf's ROM v4.0.3 with UV Kernel and I noticed that my phone always maintains around ~56MB of free RAM. However, it also kills all my running apps the moment they go into the background, which causes a lot of problems.
E.g. I've opened a page using Opera Mini and i use task manager to switch temporarily to the music player. When I switch back to opera mini, the app's reloads from scratch (shows the loading screen) and shows the Welcome page instead of the page I was previously accessing.
This situation is very unpleasant and makes me want to thrash the phone. All the OC, UV and butter smooth UI is of no use if the android system starts killing my open apps on its own discrection. I never faced such a scenario with my 2.1 stock ROM running minfreemanager and even the stock 2.3.3 ROM didn't raise such issues (though it wasn't as fast, either). I need a solution to this issue. Please advise.

I don't have minfree or any other autokiller apps installed right now but the problem persists. I have tried disabling the "screen off" profile in CPU Master, doesn't make a difference. The only way to keep an app running is to keep it in the foreground.

Its a tweak in Wolf's ROM in built. Thats the reason we get a good and smooth ROM
I guess the best way to fix this problem will be to switch to stock ROM.
Also you can perhaps report this to Wolf... He must have a solution...

Processes running rampant

I don't know what the deal is but this is continually happening to me and across different roms. I am using the built in "Task Manager" feature of touchwiz to monitor what processes are using my cpu. I am finding that some things are sitting there using between 15-45% cpu at all times even when in the background. For example:
Today right before my lunch I checked the task manager, I stared at it for 2 minutes to make sure there was no cpu activity, when I saw that everything looked to me normal I clocked out for my lunch and left work. By the time I was done eating (my phone had been in my pocket the entire time by the way) I checked my phone to see what time it was and noticed that I had lost about 12% battery life in 30 minutes. I immediately opened task manager and found that Browser was in the red and running at a constant 45% cpu usage. I immediately exited the browser. I find that this is happening with other apps as well.
What could be causing this? And more importantly will ICS fix it?
Interesting. Browsers are always killing it for me.
For example I use Dolphin Browser. The ad-dons like Google services and tab switcher kill battery like a mother and also put a ton of CPU stress on the processor.
Only thing I can say is make sure to close out all apps because apps running in a background may run rampant.
Yeah that shouldn't be happening.
I do hope a feature is implemented into android to have a 'do not run list' unless opened by user.

What I've resorted to is closing all web pages when im done and backing out of apps that I know have started to run out of control sometimes. There has to be an easier way though.
What about times like today when im researching something and have to run out for lunch and just throw my phone in my pocket with 8 browser windows open? I have to go back and find all the pages because I had to close them all out in fear that my battery would drain?
There has to be a better way. I switched to android bevaseu of the horrible memory management apple has. I would hate to leave android beacuse it couldnt control backgournd processes and let my battery be destroyed.
Memory management is good on these phones. Bad memory management causes slow downs.
What you're looking for is app management. I know some may jump on the me for saying anything about a task manager, but you might want to try one out.
Though I'd only recommend using it for the programs you're having issues with. Set it to 'only' kill the problem apps. Not any other apps or system processes.
What browser are you using? If it's happened across multiple roms, it may be an issue with that browser. Better to treat the problem (the app) than the symptom (battery getting drained)

There's not any apps like that, at least yet. Task killers kill whether the app is using alot of cpu or not.

[Q] Galaxy player 4.0 randomly has crash and reboots after heavy usage.

The way my GP 4.0 works is odd...It's as if after every reboot, the player has a certain amount of fuel (and no I'm not referring to the battery). After usage, that fuel gets burned down and the player starts running sluggishly and eventually either freezes up and forces me to do a forced shut down or it reboots itself. I usually can't keep the thing on without a reboot for longer than 3 days. It's not a major issue, but it makes playing games rough because sometimes in the middle of a game, the player just freezes up and reboots. The battery typically never goes beyond 100 degrees F, unless I'm in a hot car or something.
Anyone else got this problem? Any suggestions? I've heard of something called Lagfix that does something like trimming or something of the sort...Yeah, noob here. Would that fix me up? Running gingerbread 2.3.5 stock rom and kernel.

Are you using a custom rom? You shouldn't have 70mb all the time. You should have at least 162mb when it just starts booting up, and then 100mb- 120mb when using it. ADW Launcher is kinda heavy on memory. Try Holo Launcher or one that doesn't use a ton of ram. I remember on mine it was Go Launcher using too much ram, and it was causing it to stutter. Also I suggest uninstall (or just doing a complete restore) some of the apps. Our players suck with managing ram imo lol.

Stock rom and stock kernel. Would custom ones be better?
I do get the around 160 mb of ram when booting up. Actually, I do have around 90 mb of ram available after the boot up. Well, the thing is, is that adwlauncher has almost made it all better. It just runs so much smoother than touchwiz and i like it a lot. However, I can try another I suppose. Well that sucks. Should I start using a task killer and having it auto kill or something? I mean I don't really wanna uninstall youtube, or ebay, but I guess I could uninstall some other stuff.
Okay, so last night I uninstalled some apps that according to advanced task killer were running in the background. I've also uninstalled Lookout just to free up some more ram. now I get about 90-100 mb of ram when idle, and things are working all right for now. I'll report how it performs after a day or two...It's just a shame that the galaxy player has so little ram that I'm forced to uninstall some apps that won't even give me the option to stop them from running the background.

Custom Kernels, and roms help the player a lot imo. I would at least flash a custom kernel, because it boots the total ram from 342 to 352mb. Yeah I think that since you have a lot of apps installed it is bogging down the player. Uninstall the apps you don't need, or rarely use. I know I wished samsung would have properly upgraded our players. Instead we got the 3.6, and 4.2 which do some things better, but other things worse. They made the 5.8 but to me it's not worth the money.

Okay so unfortunately, I just got another crash/reboot. I was playing Draw something with my sister when suddenly it began to hang for about 4 seconds and then just reboot. This is the normal crash I used to get, and always get after about 3 days of having the thing on and using it. I had plenty of open ram when this happened. before I opened draw something, I had about 100 mb of ram.
Uninstalling apps has cut down on the amount of lag and hangs I get, but I still get this stupid reboot deal after a while...Is there any way to make this stop? I mean I could just do a factory reset, but I almost don't even think it's worth having to redo everything just to fix rebooting once every 2 or 3 days.

If your galaxy player is rooted I would try installing a custom kernel and see what happens. Because 1) It gives you the ability to overclock to 1.2 ghz (If you buy tegrak or set cpu you can overclock to 1.3 or even 1.5ghz). This helps with lag and memory issues from my experience, and 2) You can make a backup of your files on your device using ClockWorkMod, so you don't have to redo everything if factory resetting doesn't work.
But most likely I think you are going to have to just do a factory reset. Usually that fixes the memory problem since it resets everything on the player. But be warned flashing kernels and roms does void your warranty and can mess up your player if not done right. However, there's tons of tutorials on how to do it. If you like it stock, , iJimaniac has made a custom rom called R.E.D.D it uses the stock kernel with a modified version of the stock rom.
Also do you mind taking a screenshot or picture of your taskmanger and apps?

It is indeed rooted. However, can't I already overclock to 1.2 ghz? I mean I have tegrak and it lets me overclock to that already. I don't even mind the CPU speed now, it's just the random reboots I get that bother me. And if it needs to be said, I really cannot remember if my player has always done this...
So unless flashing a kernel or rom is actually gonna make my player run smoother (I've heard that stock stuff runs smoothest because it's made for that specific device), I don't really see a need to do it. I'm perfectly fine with the way it is stock...Just not fine with the occasional bits of lag I get (temple run is basically not playable on my player, because even the slightest hang will screw you up) and the stupid reboots.
Sure. You want a screenshot of advanced task killer open (showing all the apps that are currently running)? As for apps, how do you want me to get a picture of all those? It'd take several pictures because I'd have to scroll through the apps list and take multiple pictures.

Yes about the pictures, but like I said the kernel does give you more ram so it should help. But According to iJimaniac that his rom has less bugs than stock lol.
Go and read his rom thread to get an idea http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2123715

Some pictures...Sorry about the superuser permission box. But hey, it's a free app so whatever. If you need to know what's underneath it in any of the pictures, let me know and I'll find out and tell you.
