[Q] Need suggestions - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok here's the deal: right at this very moment I'm working on modifying a MIUI ROM, but I want to completely build, from the ground up, a ROM that isn't very big, but offers alot of customization, but satisfies EVERYBODIES needs. I'm currently only developing for the CDMA Evo 3D but I will be working on the MyTouch 4G Slide soon. Keep in mind that as of right now I ONLY WORK ON HTC PHONES and I might start working on the Samsung Stratosphere soon. Leave any suggestions you would like to see below, and I'll see what I can do!

Sprint Epic Touch 4G ROMs

So, for us Sprint users getting the Galaxy S II right away (tomorrow!), which ROMs if any will work on the Sprint version? Are ROMs for the Galaxy S II going to be carrier specific or will most ROMs work on all editions? I imagine we need ones that have the proper WiMaxx drivers, etc.
Is or will there be a way to filter out those ROMs in the development forum? There are so many editions of this phone it seems there should be sub-forums for each.
Maybe someone could start a sticky thread of which ROMs are available for each edition?
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get our own sub-forum for the Epic 4G Touch, as our model is different in multiple ways from the International version.
Edit:

Shouldn't be too long or too hard for the devs. The Source code for the sprint phone was ALSO released by Samsung today per this article.

cant wait till there is some roms for this bad boy...If its good now imagine how it will be with a polished rom. I know my evo3d rocks with aosp roms for sure, only time will tell what they can do with this phone. Lets just hope its not too ttooo long
Me too man, I just picked mine up tonight -- still waiting for it to activate (had problems switching from shady t-mobile). But boyyyyy is it pretty and fun to play with ..
still blazing fast right out the box, with a rom and addons this thing is gonna be breaking records I already know .. i asked longtime homie Deck here on xda what to get and he said the HTC Evo 3D .. I picked that thing up, the whole "3D" scheme was terribly, just gave me a headache .. but the 4g touch is ****ing HUGE ..
what more else could you ask for?

ex evo 4g owner, evo 3d tomorrow

hi guys i got a replacement phone for my broken evo 4g and I'm getting the evo 3d tomorrow. i usually dislike when people do this but now i understand sometimes its nice to be given direction when u really don't know the development somewhere. what are the recommended or most used roms for the 3D. maybe a few sense and a few aosp rom names. i am very curious as to what the top dogs of the evo 3D are!
Sense roms:
Viper's redline (best imo)
Myn's warm 2.3
Virus' eternity
Aosp:
MIUI
Ics from joelz or decks
Kernel:
Chad's
Tiamat
Ziggy
Hope this helps

In addition to the list provided above, some rough methods of being able to gauge popularity/quality are by looking at view/post count on a thread.
Also, skim read through some of the posts in the thread looking for either issues or praise and the quality of the content.
Without being able to read source code, developers who post links to their source should generally be more reliable. Links will usually go to a git/svn/google code/github site for source.
If you're really curious, open up a developers user information section and look at their last 10 posts, and/or last 10 threads they started and that will start to paint a picture of how they spend their time participating in the forum.
I probably take more caution than most before I load software somebody has modified on my device. The above are all great general tips to help anybody who is "new" to a device start to familiarize themselves with the current development scene.
I was very happy to move from the EVO 4G to the EVO 3D. Good luck!
I'm in the same boat, my 3d should be waiting for me when I get home. I've been reading a lot about rooting it this morning, seems a little more involved than the 4g but doable. Then to pick a rom....so many choices, lol

I was just like you guys a few weeks ago, coming from a Evo 4G to a Evo 3D. Hope that you get a 3D without HBOOT 1.5, it's a bit harder to install ROMS and kernels on than you're used to, and you have to void you're warranty and unlock with HTC. Rooting with any other HBOOT is like rooting the Evo 4G, though.
Other than that, there's a lot of similarities between rooting the devices, but I love the Evo 3d a million times more and don't even miss the kickstand.
my $.02 and most is based on you being a seasoned flasher with the 4G.
Pros:
-Much faster and smoother ride overall
-Native 3.0 so you will finally see AND ENJOY all the bells and whistles
-A lot of the really solid 4G devs are either here now exclusive or also doing 3D so you will see some familiar faces
-Really can't go wrong with any rom you chose as they are all very solid in their own rights less the posted quirks that are just to be expected
Cons: (depending on stance)
-Still an EVO so it's not like you get the full "hey I got a new phone!" feeling
-Dev is still in it's infancy stage so not as up to speed as 4G
-HBOOT 1.5 isn't the toughest thing to bypass but does add a few steps to flashing so if you were a flash-a-holic as I was you will definitely slowwww down
-ICS is starting to come along but definitely slower than most phones
Overall you will enjoy the move. 3D you will get over probably about 5 minutes after you turn it on but it's still an Evo so the phone is a beast. The community itself is a little slow but the people here especially the devs are tops in helping out.
Currently I am running OLYPUS ODEX HD V2 and love it. I went from Vipers Redline which I personally experienced a little more solid running but not enough for me to lose the extra features OLYMPUS has.
Well I got lucky I think. The 3d I got has hboot 1.4!

Very Nice! i would stick with a sense 3.0 rom
ive been useing fresh just for the simple fact of stability not much tweaks done
unlike the evo 4g there isnt much of any feature complete aosp roms unless you like miui style
wow thanks a lot to all of you for the replies. i honestly didn't expect much. i feel very welcome here as a new 3D user. i just opened it and i love it! can't wait to root it and try these out. thanks again to all you i really appreciate it.

best ics roms and their differences question.

I was just curious as if someone had a knowledge of the ice roms and their differences, things working or not working, I have and still am reading and researching to find the best or most stable Rom.. any help would be appreciated...
you should specify cdma or gsm
however you also need to consider it's all about perspective
currently im using viper rom for sense 4.0 (cdma)
however i like the senseless rom - SOS M - it's clean, it's fast, it's sense base without the sense bs

That information is in the first post of each rom thread. We are not going to list all the roms and their features for you. That's your job to find out.

Sorry I'm CDMA, have tried a lot of them I also like sos m, I'm curious as if any of the roms mess with signal strength some I've used put up great bars, and some seem to not get past a couple bars not sure weather its my phone or the roms, I have a do read a lot and all of the post, I just thought it be a good idea as a comparing guide that's all.. but I'm hboot 1.4 s-off, with the updated firm wear, I guess I was st asking more of what you guys like and is stable for a good daily driver.. didn't mean to offend anyone.
No I don't think you offended anyone, as there are alot of noobs on xda and after awhile you kind of get sick of the silly questions, that's all. Anyways roms are personal thing, some dudes like blondes, some like redheads(me), every rom has it's advantages and disadvantages , some work better on some peoples phones than others for many different reasons, I find a rom that I like and stay with it. Kernels is where it's at now, that makes a difference, my opinion
sent on my Evil Evo running the so called developers kernel
Yes I have seen the many repetitive questions, and its hard to read threw all of them, I've gotten to the point of were I'm pretty confident about roms witch I tend to change like underwear lol until I find one that works pretty good for what I need, I've started reading all about the kernels and what they do, but not sure if I'm ready to mess with those yet... So being my second phone in the evdo line witch I really miss my EVO 4g, am torn between the galaxy s3 n the new EVO LTE, I heard the Samsung is more developer friendly, but guess I gotta take a spin on them to see, I've noticed there's not a lot of love for the 3d... But thanks for the point in direction....
Just look through all the crap find a couple of good developers follow there work and you good to go

Retiring in the 3VO community

Hey guys/gals. Sorry, I won't be able to progress any further development for the Evo3D CDMA as I have lost the usage of my device.
But, I want for anyone that think they can get my work past where we got it so far then by all means, please do so.
Use any of my work I have posted to as you all see fit.
I would personally suggest to people who have an interest in developing a Rom for this device to download a stock rom and compare it to my Roms. I'f you do decide to use it, just mention it's from my work.
Thanks to all i've worked with in this community. And if I ever get a 3VO again, be sure that I will jump right where I left off
As for me now, I'll be messing with an old Sense 4 port for my Droid Inc.

Call for help to any and all Droid Incredible 4g ROM Devs!!

I would really appreciate some help with a project that I am hoping to start soon. I would REALLY like to get Sense launcher (Rosie) working on a non-HTC phone, specifically the ZTE Force 4g. I am asking for help from Droid Incredible 4g devs, because of the similarity of the platforms.
Both phones are MSM8690, both LTE, both 1GB ram, both are stock ICS 4.0.3.
What I don't know is how well this might go. That's where I need your expertise!
You see, I am sort of an HTC junkie. My last 4 phones were HTC's and I am very used to the Sense UI. There is not a whole lot of development going on for my phone (you can check it out on androidforums.com in the ZTE Force 4G - All Things Root forum).. Basically there is a CM10 port which lacks bluetooth and wifi capability, the stock rom, a rooted debloated stock rom (DroidForce, which is nice btw, and what I plan to use for a base). Also, a JB rom which is so new that pretty much nothing works. The Kernel sources for my phone JUST got released, and many are using the matrix kernel ported from the Avid. I feel that it would be good to add a little variety for ZTE Force users, and if I can bring together a Sense modded ROM for the community it would be nice.
Yes, I know that Sense is not often ported to other platforms due to the difficulty, and this thread will hopefully help me assess the doability of the project.
My first question, for those of you in the know, is what is the kernel version of the first stock rom on Droid Incredible 4g? If it is 3.0.8 then that is another thing that these phones share in common.
My first Sense related question is also about the kernel. Are there dependencies (modules, whatever) in the HTC kernel that are required for sense to work? I have read that there may be but have not seen this confirmed.
Next question would be about the screen resolution. The Force 4g is 480x800 while Incredible 4G is 540x960, both are 4". If this did theoretically make it to the point of testing, will the launcher screens and icons scale automatically, or will each graphic have to be resized? If resized, how complicated would that get?
Aside from the possibility of kernel dependencies, the next most important question is, "What exactly do I need?" This is where I would probably need the most help from you guys. If this is even possible to attempt, I don't know which frameworks I would need to add, what apks and files to rip from the Incredible 4g rom. All of the very detailed stuff which I know some of you guys know, I will need to learn.
I know probably most of you might possibly think that this idea is dumb and just say "Buy an HTC", but because of budgetary constraints I could not get a 4g HTC and use it on my carrier (Boost btw). I have the HTC Evo design 4G and it was on Boost but it's WiMax and we all know that is a dead duck.
So is anyone willing to give me some answers to the questions above? If there is a possibility of this working (any version of Sense would be fine) then I would greatly appreciate some guidance! I'd really rather not go the route of another launcher skinned like sense. That seems lame to me. Plus, I dig a challenge!
Thanks for taking the time to read and I thank you in advance for any responses!
Cheers!
-SimStim
Guess I'll just dive into this on my own..
Wish me luck?
