It's a bit of an OT, but related to XDA, because so far, it seems the best sound comes from a Galaxy S with custom kernel for voodoo due to the Wolfson DAC inside. Someone then said, all Tegra Chipsets come with a Wolfson (?) but all info I could find was related to a Wolfson Power Management Chip, not a DAC. Also, I wonder what kind of output impendace matching phones have, as I got some slightly difficult to drive in-ears, requiring a very low OI.
Since there are competent people here dealing with specific hardware and probably able to give more than a "My phone sounds whoopey!" answer, I thought I'd ask here ... also with the idea of a pointer to a possible custom rom?

I don't think there's better than the phones with the Wolfson DACs on the market. I know there's stuff like the HTC Rezound being touted as a music phone but we both know this doesn't really target real music amateurs rather than people wanting some boom boom (yeah, Beats buds...). Doesn't mean it doesn't have good stuff in it though.

Right ... I'm not talking about those HTC Boomphones for schoolyard kids. The Galaxy S already had it fairly right with the Wolfson DAC ... for whatever reason, they didn't use its amping capability, which all sounds massively better than whatever other amp is in there ... bizarre. Why put in great hardware and then not use it. Later it sadly vanished for the known crappy Yamaha chip.....
Maybe if enough people scream, HTC will hear us ... after all, they NEED reasons people would have to buy a new phone. There's one. Go produce it, HTC.

I don't know, as I said I don't think there's any better phone for music than those with Wolfson DACs currently on the market. *shrugs*
Well I followed that idea ... and won an auction for an LG Optimus 2x yesterday ... I'll see next week, how the Wolfson in there behaves. if I understood right, in many cases, you just have to root the phone and the voodoo app will insmod the wolfson kernel modules? That'd be a bit easier for a start than to use a cusom mod.
Wolfson in Galaxy R

Samsung Galaxy R also have wolfson DAC.

No the tegra One X has Crappy Realtek stuff from what i read, The Qualcomm ones have Ok built-in ones. but nothing special.
Well im on verizon and in DESPERATE need upgrade from my tbolt. I am really interested in the one x but verizon isnt going to offer it. In fact the only thing that seems worth it on verizon is the s3. Ive looked for revies but can find any that compares the Samsungs audio and htc beats audio. Can anyone tell me what they think is better for sound?
As far as camera goes, it looks like the one x has better/more features with its camera. Please correct me if im wrong.
the s3 will have the wolfson dac audio chip, supercurio a member here will work wonders for the audio.
check out voodoo sound on the sgs forums
There isn't much difference in the cameras overall to be honest (I have a One X, and also had hands-on the S3). In good lighting conditions the S3 takes slightly better shots, in lower light the One X does. S3 does better video.
In relation to audio - I didn't have enough time to properly A/B the S3, but the (international) One X SQ is very average.
we all know Int'l version is a wolfson dac. What about the US version? same as htc one s/x? i hope they disable the S4 built in dac and put in a wolfson one. I will be disappointed if they gimp the US version again(quad-core,cpu, now audio)
I'm also hoping for the Wolfson DAC. I wouldn't be surprised though if again we are left out.

The US version isn't gimped because it has the dual core S4. It's a beast, very energy efficient, and has an LTE radio. More cores doesn't equal better performance. We also get 2gb of instead of 1. Sounds to me like the International version was gimped.
Like you, I hope for the Wolfson DAC, but my One X sounds great and is crystal clear, so no worries other than hoping Samsung used proper shielding inside this thing. The interference on the Note was horrendous!

Been thinking about this myself. We got two weeks... then I can hold mine
Yeah this is my main concern too. But it wasn't until I was looking at the teardown of the GSIII that I realized that the 'wolfson DAC' was a separate chip, not a thing on the exynos SOC like the mali etc. It seems like this release is a 'details & polish' generation so I'm still hoping.

I heard the sound quality for the One S (same chip) is pretty good, but I'm still hoping they included the Wolfson chip
I don't know how accurate this site is but according to it, it looks like some of the LTE Galaxy S III versions will come with Wolfson WM1811

Did you happen to read the below quote from that link?
" Winner – Tegra 3: Not many apps are optimized for quad-core, but several benchmarks are."
Let me guess, benchmarks are everything right? I have the S4 One X now and this thing is blazing fast. Actually, in real world performance the S4 outperforms the Tegra 3 version. Processors are way ahead of app development anyway. I'm my opinion, the only thing the quad core has over the S4 is a better gpu. I don't really game with my phone so that doesn't bother me at all, but you can give me more ram any day.

Supercurio commented specifically on that site to say they are untrustworthy, I'd take their news with a grain of salt.
Hi guys!
My old HTC Desire get broken and now i've got a Samsung Galaxy ACE that is terrible... i need a new device...
i don't have a budget but i like to save my money... i use my device for surfing the web (flash plugin is not important), apps zapping, gaming and modding if necessary to improve performance... photo/video aren't my priority but if i had a good camera i think i would use my phone to take many photos
the Samsung Galaxy S3 is not in list because i don't like this device, i hate touchwiz UI, the design and the bad plastic case of samsung
Here in Italy the price for every device is:
-Galaxy Nexus, 339€
-HTC One S, 399€
-Xperia S, 399€ or a bit less
-HTC One X, 480€
the fact is that i like the feature of one device and another feature of another device...
-Galaxy Nexus, i like the fact that is google experience (ever updated), jelly bean, and clean UI. i hate the not so good camera (releted to other devices), the only 16GB storage, the plastic case, the bad speaker and the old SoC (Dual-Core Cortex A9 with an "old" GPU)
-HTC One S, i like so much the design and the metallic case, the fantastic SoC (Snapdragon S4) and the Sense UI... i don't like the qHD resolution, the 8mpx photocamera (compared to the sony one) and only 16gb storage
-Xperia S, i love the design (it is very beautiful and original), and the fantastic Camera. but i don't like the old Snapdragon S3 and its power consumation
-HTC One X, like so much the display and the design... but i don't trust in Tegra 3 (i don't need a quad core with an old kernel and low optimization, built with an old technology 45nm)
which device do you buy if were in my place?
As an attempt to clear up these forums, I'm asking that all threads like this be posted into the **Device Suggestions Thread**.
Thanks.

Well if you care about the latest Android releases and don't care about high specs then i would suggest you to wait for 2 months because next Nexus is just around the corner.
But if you love the great music support + awesome camera + high specs then get HTC One X.
I would go with the One X if you need a new device now. Otherwise, wait for the next Nexus.
I would go Nexus if you want to have the latest and greatest software.
Does anyone know if the US variant of the Note 2 sports the Wolfson Audio Chip? I know the international model has it bit I also know that the international S3 model had it and the US variants did not... I previously owned the S3 and sold it for the Note 2 and the Note 2 sound does seem better (ring tones and notifications sound like He or something lol)... I'm no audiophile by any means and wanted to hear from all the audiophiles out there!!! So chime in let's here it!!!

All versions of Galaxy Note II are mostly hardware-identical, unlike International vs. US Galaxy S III. And yes, they all have the Wolfson DAC.
I came from a Galaxy Nexus and to my ears the Note II does sound considerably better. The GNex had a noticeable hump in the midbass which had to be EQ'd out and it definitely didn't sound quite as clear. The high end in particular seems to have more detail on the Note II than on the GNex. The GSM Arena review of the Note II demonstrates a nearly ruler-flat frequency response from 20hz to 20khz, which is pretty amazing for a phone's audio output. Too bad about the Android hiss but there's nothing that can be done about that until Google rewrites the Android media framework.
