I cant video call ? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi all im having a problem with my S3
When ever i try to video call any one i get an error saying it could not connect and do i want to voice call instead, both phones are video enabled & connected to wifi ive tried different wifi spots, one in my house and one in my bro in laws thats just got a S3,he can video call me fine but when i call him i get the error
could it be a network issue (vodafone) or a phone setting ? ive installed tango video calling app and that works just fine but the stock calling app just doesnt work for me ?

Maybe your signal is weak, eg no 3g.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA

would 3G matter when im using wifi?

If I understood you right, you aren't using any app to do video calling, so what you are trying to use is 3G video calling, which uses 3G. You can't use Wifi with that.

ok just tried not using wifi but mobile data,im getting full bars for my reception and i have a H symbol for my mobile data
still wont connect via video calling

is your correspondant also on 3G network?
BOTH of you must be connected to 3G, otherwise it won't work.

yeah both where connected to 3G,i had both phones on my desk and tried to make the call
Im wondering if its a network issue, maybe vodafone blocking it

I am not sure if this applies. but for us, to utilize 3g video calls you need to ask your operator to activate it.

Thanks, i need to contact them today anyway so i'll ask about that

Have you tried Skype?

no not tried skype but i have tried a similar app called "tango" that works just fine, last time i tried skype it just had a horrid green screen they said it was a ICS issue, have they updated it now to work ok with ICS ?

Skype is supposed to work trough any net connection, (as in wifi or 3g). But video call over 3g is different from voip services like Skype.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA

if the video call is made via your network service then you need 3g, if you are making a video calls with third party apps like gtalk, skype etc then you dont need to rely on 3g and can use wifi instead.

still not tried skype because to be honest i dont like the app , you need to be signed in all the time to receive msgs , in the tango app ive got installed i switched from wifi and made a video call using 3G , it worked perfect
so my 3g is working ok just not the stock samsung app ?

hi, this is not entirely correct. Tango is a service app. Just like a voip service. So it relies on internet connection only. 3g video however is a service from your gsm provider. It will only use specific 3g service of your gsm and not wifi.
I must stress SPECIFIC SERVICE here. You may have 3g data enabled but may not have 3g video (or vice versa), also it needs both phones to be capable and enabled.
To check it you may try another Sim which you tested to work with 3g video calls, or try your sim on another device to make the call.

[q] 3g video calling app(over 3g network not on data)

i had been using dell streak for last 4 mnths, but still cldnt find video calling app for dell streak over 3G, i'm concern with 3g video call not data call (like skype or fring).
whilie googling i read somewhere tht android doesnt support this calling facility , but my bro has Samsung Galaxy S which has inbuilt 3G video calling with phone application.
Does anybody knw how can i do 3G video calling through dell streak??
or suggest any remedy over this??
thnx in advance
exactly no comments till now ???
guys we need ur help here !!!!!!!!
Even my previous older phones (Samsung Omnia, Samsung Omnia 2) had this option but it's not possible with the Streak. I've asked the same question a long time ago and nobody replied really, it's just possible if someone ports the (video)call app from the Galaxy S or Galaxy tab or maybe another android phone. android 2.3/gingerbread will support SIP calling but that's a whole different story...
Alternate solutions are QIK, TANGO, FRING but then you still depend on software on both sides and app/service needs to be running on both and need to be in an area that supports data ofcourse...
I use ooVoo. I use it to call to my pc and I've used it tho video call a an evo
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA Premium App
hey, try the new fring or Tango. they both work over 3g
guys, he's talking about carrier supported video calls which isn't available in the US. Fring/tango/oovoo etc use data and go through the apps servers, where as what he's talking about it just counts against your minutes i.e. uses no data.
To the OP, i'd contact your wireless carrier and dell and see what they come up with. I haven't been overseas in a while so never looked it up.
guys, 'm talking abt 3g video calling supported by carrier operator and not abt fring, oovoo which operate on data
In 3G video calling u can do video call to any other person using 3G video call enable phone having 3g video calling facility provided by operator.
You dont need any data interface like gprs, 3g data, hspa or wifi juss need 3g video call enabled in service and a 3g video call enabled phone like samsung galaxy S android, nokia 5800 for symbian.
this video not to specific to any platform, software and can only work on 3g phone to 3g phone
I believe the op is talking about video calls over the cellular network like we were able to do over some older phone or modern home video phone not over the 3G network itself.
It is slightly confusing because he is asking for video over 3G not data when our Data is our 3G and vice versa. They are one in the same. If you do not have a data plan you do not have a 3G plan. You have purely a GSM cellular plan. (or CDMA depending upon your carrier)
I do not think any of the android phone at the moment (other then the Sammy now that you brought it up, but I dont know firsthand) are capable of video calls over the cellular network without using our data. Over wifi yes, but not over the cell network like we used to with the old Nokias and some of the older winmo devices.

i know what his talking about.when u go to make a call it should give two options
voice call
video call
since it has a front facing camera .
in the uk this option was available on many networks but hardly people would use it because it was expensive also u had to be in a place where u have a strong network connection and a phone which supports the feature .
not only samsung, also with GD910 LG phone watch u can videocall
But india right now only my operator bsnl is providing [email protected] paisa/min which us quite cheap as of now
Which I cab use..

Still no solution to the 3G native calls
Hi All devs,
Could you please help us out here. Can somebody port the phone.apk from Galaxy S to Streak so that we can get the same option of video calling over UMTS.
Any help would be much appreciated.
The video calling feature has been removed by Google from Android OS version 4.0 and above. Why? Ask them. You still have it in Samsung devices because it has been added by Samsung, not because the stock Android OS (made by Google) would support it. For your Dell Streak, apparently, they chose to go with the original ROM made by Google. So..that's why. And about how to enable it...I honestly don't know. Still looking for a solution myself.
Ahh, but by that statement video calling via 3G should be an option in the Streak, since the Streak was on Gingerbread at the time the thread was created. It's not. Meaning either Google never had the capability in the first place or Dell had it removed from the stock ROM.
Regardless, it's not an option on the Streak, and to add it I believe would require some reverse engineering. I don't think it would be quite as simple as decompiling framework-res.apk and making changes to XML files, like what I did to get the network location service active on my cheap-a$$ Coby tablet.
IM not a Dev but a noob and I'll try to upload it and give talk link

In sri lanka 3G video calling is provided by some carrier operators. And call charges are same as normal voice calls. My old phone Nokia 3120c had this facility and i used it sometimes. Now im also finding a way to do video calls with my android. I dont know about mobile phone technology, but i think it is not a hardware thing. May be a simple app can do it.
bump, how do I hack and enable a video call option?
using Nexus 4

[Q] Is there any ROM with Video Calling enabled by default the same way in the i9100

I searched everywhere and I am still to come across a ROM with video calling enables as in the i9100 by default without having to use a data plan or loging onto the internet....
If there is please be kind enough to let me know...
I don't understand, video calling always takes data...I've never heard of any instance where you don't need a cellular connection or wifi to video call someone.
If you were talking about how stock TouchWiz I9100 ROMs have video calling enabled natively, without an app, there is one: ShishriROM (see my signature for link). But it doesn't work in the US anyway, because no carrier supports anything but iPhone's FaceTime. In other words, the feature is useless, and to do video calls at all on an Android in the US, you and the person you want to call both need to use an app like Skype or Tango.
Thanks!
I wanted a rom that could make video calls on the cellular network without the use of wifi. And I don't live in the US.
Thanks for all the help!

I belive that is not true at all... Carrier Video Calls are allowed on stock SAMSUMG firmware for Galaxy SII i9100 international version. I can enhure that, becouse I have used video calls on my carrier (ICE, Costa Rica) on ICS 4.0.3 for the past 6 months, until I changed to a Custom ROM...
I wonder if there is any Custom ROM that suports video calls on carrier network (no data plan network or wi-fi). I don't know why in US carrier does not allow this service to be accessed by the suscriptors, that is something of United States... but in other many countries arround the world, video calls on carrier network are allowed and used by the suscriptors just like me.

The reason why we remove it cause AT&T does not offer that only for the iPhone, we all have to use 3rd party apps for video calling (tango, gtalk, etc).
Find a i9100 based Rom on here you like, and just ask the dev to post the stock contacts/dialer and it will have the video call options.
That should make it work unless the dev removed some key files.

I have Tata Docomo and i too had this same kind of problem earlier(almost a year ago). The Edge symbol would only show upload and nothing would work.
In Tata Docomo we have two internet setting:
1.Tata Docomo Internet(default and to connect internet in computer)
2 Dive-in(for wap i think)
The temporary workaround for me was to use Dive-in instead of Tata Docomo Internet whenever that problem occured(mostly at midnight). Using this setting only the stock browser would work and nothing else.
So, you could try Vodafone Live(i think that's what its called) settings and at least your stock browser may work. Though check your balance after using.
Well im using docomo
and i still get this issue
in both oxygen and cm7
i just toggle gprs/edge off
and it works
Ok guys but I didn't notice this problem while using airtel I was using my friends SIM I was astonished it was awesome!! Both speed and connection!! And I am facing this issue recently not before!! And I can't change the SIM cuz I want the same number! Gonna try porting my number!!!

If you are on 2G plan, make sure you check the 2G toggle only. I have seen this error on many of my friends phone, who are using 2G plan but the network settings are 2G/3G both. Vodafone doesnt like this, and that's why they throttle your network connection.

LG P769 Wi-Fi Calling Issue

The Wi-Fi Calling is working but sometimes it will say service disable and sometimes T-Mobile just depends on if it hits a tower or not. My last phone whether connected through just Wi-Fi Calling or on a tower would always say T-Mobile, is this a common characteristic of this phone?

I don't know, I disabled WiFi calling. When it says service disabled are you...
1.) Connected to WiFi?
2.) Are you able to make WiFi calls?
Because if my guess is right, it says service disabled because you aren't on the WiFi, and then when it says T-Mobile WiFi Calling Service or whatever, it's because you're on the WiFi and able to make a call with your signal.

Calls are not possible on wifi as they are carried over the jio network. You can only use one of the two...voice or data at a time
