new evo user impression so far - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

so i had an htc hero for 2.5 years, and made the decision to finally upgrade.
this is just my 2 cents so far (quick review)
i like the phone. there are a few things about it that just seem funky though, and i know some of you are working on fixes.
i dislike:
-the on-screen menu button. should be re-mapped to the recent apps button, and long pressing the recent apps button should open up the app switcher. the app switcher itself is annoying. i don't like scrolling through cards. i miss a bunch of icons popping up and me picking which app i was using that way.
-the multi-tasking issues (gr)

Wait upgraded... From.... Hero.... Congrats .. And Idk why everyone wants buttons re mapped I guess some features are used more my some people then myself. I n the multi tasking I'd annoying we all agree with that lol.

i know right? i was used to it and it worked for me. i even develop themes lol. but i used a droid2 to test them on. i liked the hero.
to be honest, i miss the trackball. SO MUCH easier to edit text with. like, seriously.

I think it is great you got much use out of the Hero. I am glad to see that when other people use/try out every new phone that comes out. Not throwing stones but not me. Takes me too long to learn all the ins and outs of a new phone.

I agree, and I was one of those. I spent two days with the new evo from the OG EVO, and I almost forgot about the things that I was so used to. There are so many pluses to ICS. Maybe it's the beautiful screen that distracted me like a swinging pendulum hypnosis, or the FAST camera. Huge step up from EVO 4G. If I was coming from the Hero, I would have jizzed!

Well...... Welcome to the EVO 4g LTE
As for the stuff you dislike, you can flash a rom to get rid of the on screen menu button and make one of the capacitive buttons the menu button. I think you can get an app to make the multitasking look different... I remember something like this when using gingerbread.
I don't have any multitasking issued but I do have a bit of lag when switching tasks or just lag in general.... If that is what you meant.

pkmn rom is the heavy weight champ. unlike most, I like the multitasking button but i hated the three dot menu. The pkmn rom let's u remap buttons with long press options so I have menu set up for long press home and toggle off the three dot menu - it's perfect. You can also change the multitasking to the stock Android look. it's the perfect rom - yall should check it out

where can I find said ROM? I didn't see it in the dev section. I'll google it

Best sprint phone?

Hey fellow photon owners, looks like im the first to post on the photon boards hahahah jk....but seriously I traded in my evo 3d for this thing and couldn't be more happy. Its faster, has better reception, looks cooler, and just feels like an overall better phone.
Here's to hoping development for this phone takes off!!! Cheers!!
Edit : I guess in the midst of me posting 3 other threads have been created lol so I take back being the first to post
Sent from my MB855 using XDA Premium App
Yea, I'm really liking it as well. I returned the EVO 3D because I was having signal strength issues and this seems to be MUCH better. The EVO 3D would get 0-1 bar in my office while the Photon is picking up 3-4. So hopefully I'll see an improvement in the battery life since it won't constantly be searching for a signal.
I haven't had a chance to watch any Netflix or HBO Go movies yet so I hope those stream well. I've played a few games which played well. I do like the Motorola text messaging app.
So far, so good
All we need now is for a dev to jump on board and see exactly how locked down this phones bootloader really is
Sent from my MB855 using XDA Premium App
I'm thinking if this device can become a popular upgrade for those coming from an ogEVO, then the development will come as well. If so, this device will get rooted one way or another.
All going to depend on how popular this is. Only thing I can see slowing it down are the peeps holding out for the Within.

It will have a Menu at the top of the screen that gives one option at a time...basically it cycles to the next option when you press volume down key.
So with phone powered off...hold vol down + power, continue to hold til you see the splash screen for Moto, and White text at very top middle. Will say Fastboot. From there, you can cycle thru the other options using Down Vol, Up Vol will select current action.

I'm one of those peeps. I decided to wait for the Within to come out so I could compare side-by-side with the Photon and the E3D to decide which of the three phones are closest to what I really want. I would love the Photon but am worried about the Pentile display. I would love the Within but am not happy about 800x480 screen resolution and like the Photon's world phone/business features. Love HTC as a maker and prefer Sense to Blur/TouchWIZ but don't like the 3D screen - you may be able to turn it off but it is not as good a screen as it would be if 2D. The layer that makes it 3D-capable affects 2D viewing too.

On the evo 3d only thing 3d which is a option is pictures & video's. So if you want the 3d but worried about it on its only a option. On certain rom's if your rooted, I guess there a option for 3d homescreen, that's only certain rom's though & again just a option.

Oh and I am LOVING this phone. I did a factory reset and it is even faster than before!! The battery life will straighten itself out in a few days as my Evo 4G and Vibrant(2.3.3 dev rom) did. Seems that the OS wants to run like crazy for the first few days then it settles once all the caches and optimization's are done. But big screen Wiimote gaming last night was awesome!! just have to setup all the buttons.

Sense 3.0 Carousel?

Hey
Don't suppose there is a way to remove that annoying spinny thing the Sense Launcher keeps doing? I've used my Sister's Sensation XE a fair bit and it is NOWHERE near as sensitive as it is on the EVO 3D. I've tried several different ROMs too (more or less every single one) and it is still ultra sensitive. There appears to be a severe problem with the EVO 3D in how easy it is to get that annoying carousel thing to start, and the Sensation is 1000x better in this regard. I have tried adjusting the way I scroll, but even still, it is annoyingly common and rather ridiculous and pointless. Now, after a couple months of this, I've finally had enough.
Is there any way to get rid of this nonsense or permanently disable it? Don't see any other purpose of it other than to annoy the hell out of everyone.
Thank you.

Meh, close enough. Short story, even shorter... You can't get rid of it.
Well I hope they get rid of it on the next update or, at least, lower the sensitivity significantly for our devices.

I don't mind an option to scroll through more than one screen with a quicker swipe, but the caroussel is a) too fast to stop it at the screen you want, b) takes you back to the exact same screen you initiated the caroussel on and c) it's way too sensitive.
Oh and the pinch or double home-button tap is a better option to select the screen you want w/o navigating through the others.
Long story short: I hope they improve it or make it at least optional.
On some custom Roms they have the option to disable it. But of course you have to be rooted. Or maybe try a launcher?

Microsift's Smoked by Windows Phone seems to pick on the uneducated

So I saw the story this morning about someone being cheated out of the Smoked by Windows Phone challenge and what not... First time I heard about this marketing campaign actually so I looked at Microsoft's page for it which is lined with YouTube videos showing how it's faster than any other phone...
The first 2 videos (all i've looked at so far) are "let's see who can take a picture and upload it to facebook the fastest." Of course WP7 wins every time, but what I'm shocked at is their balls to make a dedicated camera button the selling point as if it's a new thing. "If I hold this dedicated camera button on the side, it opens the camera..." Yeah, I can do that too. Then he points out 1 button upload to Fb - swipe left to right on camera to show preview, tap to upload. Yeah, for us, tap preview, tap image to open share option. And everyone seems to be mesmerized by this crap they don't realize they already have! (ok, not everyone has the dedicated camera button)
You could argue that most people don't know how to use Android. Well... same could be said for any new device... They're just picking on those that don't know.
If you want to see for yourself...

Try holding it down -- phone should give you some haptic feedback and then open the camera.
Of course, on the 3D, you can just drag the camera icon into your unlock ring and achieve the same thing.
I just tried myself. Pressed the power button, dragged the camera icon into the unlock ring, snapped a pic, pressed the "Share" icon that appears during the short after-shot preview, and had I wanted to, I could've hit the Facebook option (I didn't ... who wants to see a pic of my monitor??). It took roughly 4 or 5 seconds, less if I were younger and could move faster

I did see that. I didn't wanna turn it into a discussion about that whole thing. I was amazed at how they're trying to spin their whole camera thing. Watching some more, yeah... there are some other things they're more efficient with. But it's still an ugly and uninteresting OS.

Yeah, if even that long. The funny thing is that the change is so simple (go find runandhides thread, he shows how he did it) that anyone that knows how to decompile/recompile an all can do it. Let alone HTC, it shouldn't have taken them this long.

No I must agree. You may be mistaken about what is broken with multitasking on our phones. The One X fix removes the black menu bar at bottom of screen in some apps & moves recent apps to a long press of the button. Our multitasking problem is Sense not storing the state of apps once we switch from one to another so that when we do switch or multitask back to original opened app it has to completely restart. This fix does nothing to help that and I don't see HTC releasing one anytime soon seeing as that is how they intended it to work, so from their pov it is working properly.

The discussion regarding multitasking is HTC's "memory optimization". That means the HOX boots with more ram available, not multitasking being what it should be - multitasking.
I really like this phone. I can deal with a moderate task killer. I don't use the phone like I do a computer. All I ask for is a level of multitasking where I can browse the web, change an album or two, send a message, and return to browsing the web - seamlessly. There is clearly enough ram, let us use it.

Unfortunately HTC's current next generation smart phone's have been a big flop. I'm sure this update will make the current user base happy, but it will definitely not attract new users. HTC has been to slow with its updates to fix current problems and unfortunately it took me to install CM10 to finally use multitasking the way it was meant to be. Htc better fix their problems quickly or they'll be the next Nokia.

I knew I wasn't going crazy. My ram percentage was always under 25 percent. Something was very off about that. That's the same percentage my Evo 4g gave off with the same apps installed. Sometimes my Evo 4g was better. Smh. Multitasking won't be updated by HTC until October I bet

I don't think you'll find an app since such a thing had to do with kernel capabilities. Unless it supports the feature, you can't set the option. If you're lucky and you ask nicely, a dev might listen and build it in. Of course it's entirely their decision.
