Question about restoring to stock rom - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so i want to restore my atrix 4g, taking my moms upgrade and giving my atrix to her.
Currently it is rooted and the bootloader is unlocked, and i'm using cyanogen 7. I did not make a backup of my stock rom.
Is it possible to unroot, re-lock the bootloader and return to stock rom so that the warrenty "appears" to be un-voided?
I've always found android hacking pretty confusing so could someone point me in the right direction?

Which android version and build were you on when you unlocked your phone? I am guessing either ATT 2.3.6 or 2.3.4? Which build? 141, 91, etc.
I am asking because I was on ATT 2.3.6 build that ends on 141 before I unlocked and I was able to go back to factory stock by flashing the same sbf file through rsd lite. Only problem I encountered was the disappearing status bar which is fixed by totally wiping all data and signing up for a new Motoblur account.

Search for the "fruitcakes" thread over in the Dev section and flash whichever one you want. Fruitcakes allow you to flash back to stock firmware.
The bootloader will still be unlocked. Once you unlock, there's no going back, however its been reported that the word "unlock" doesn't show up when you boot the phone after you flash a fruitcake...

No need to flash a fruitcake if you want real stock ROM. Fruitcake will still show unlocked text on boot screen.

[Q] What should I do, locked bootloader not rooted w/4.5.91 installed

I reviewed all the threads but can't resolve the information I need to plan next step!
I want to revert back to stock since I am experiencing battery drain (I believe).
I did not root or unlock before using the OTG (thumbdrive) method for insrtalling the OTA 4.5.91 zip.
After finding out that was ill advised I did not unlock and left unrooted. I have been out of town and can't backtrack throught the threads to determine what is the best course.
Is there a concise thread for my situation?
Thanks in advance
If you want to confirm your status, please adb, su, and "cat /sys/firmware/fuse/ReservedOdm" or just open the file in Root Explorer. If you see something like:
10000000000010001000300004000
Then you should NOT SBF anything from Motorola"
If you want to post your ReservedOdm to look and see if you will be fine to SBF 1.83 again
Probably you are safe if you actually installed Kenth by CDW or moto-fastboot (boot.img and system.img)
But if you actually run the update.zip or any update trought the normal android recovery screen and if you saw the following legend "updating AP20 bootloader" in that case you CAN NOT flash any SBF from Motorola

Yes it is safe to root. I am on 4.5.91 and can't flash back. I un locked rooted and installed CWM. With no issues. Wouldnt use .sbf flashes though.

ok here it is:
10000000000010001000100004000
4= BL "unlock" did you ever unlock you BL with pudding?
0= BL lock
10000000000010001000100004000
1=NO UPDATE BL TO AP20 Ver. , so you applied GB by moto-fastboot process or by CDW
3=YOU HAVE A NEW BL AP20 Ver., so you indeed applied GB OTA by Android Recovery from the sdcard
so in other words the ones we are in "confirmed" brick land if we RSD any MOTOROLA SBF are the ones with "3"
So you seem you indeed apply unlock bootloader (please confirm?) but you never applied GB OTA by Android Recover update.zip, and as you already confirm you applied GB Kenneth version by CDW or moto-fastboot.

Status
1. Locked and rooted phone
2. I ran 1.2.6 sbf with RSD to return to a stock build
3. I unrooted phone
4. I ran OTA 1.8.3
5. I ran the Motorola Build 4.5.91 "not KP's" with Motorola cable from update.zip through USB flash drive
6. "Stopped Here" this is my current state
Unfortunately I did not use KP's version, and I don't know how to check for blown fuses since I haven't rooted and did not flash pudding "stopped after flashing OTA for fear of bricking" . I believe I have read that some have installed pudding from my current state to with a recoverable softbrick and then used fast booted flashing img of 1.8.3.
can anybody verify doing this safely? Sorry if this thread is repetitive but there is much confusion in here and I was gone two days from the forum when this all was taking place.
Much appreciated.
JiminSD I recommend you to root first by preinstall method first so you can check first the "fuses" to make sure how to proceed. To do the root you DO NOT need to be "unlock". If you need help just tell and I can guide you for the root process

Yes, I unlocked with pudding following the instructions here ---> http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader, and yes I did flash KP's 4.5.91 and not the OTA.
Thanks for the clarification. Much appreciated!
So you are in the group of the lucky ones that actually can RSD "full" 1.83 or 1.57
The only thing you will lost the tag "unlocked" at the startup, so to get it back just RSD pudding again
I think you are asking this to return you phone to "stock" to be able to received the official OTA from moto/att right?

I am thinking about it, but I may let some other brave souls try first, as I believe it will cause the issues the current leaked OTA has caused. My phone runs great at the moment on KP's 4.5.91.
Prior to this, I flashed back a couple of times on 4.1.83 and did what you said to get "unlocked" back on my boot screen. I think everyone is more or less worried about what the actual release version of GB might do if you are unlocked already.
I am in same situation as OP. From private discussions and reading different threads it seems that I can go from stock 2.3.4 OTA (no mods) with a locked bootloader to anything if I just use the small unlock/pudding followed by fastboot unlock commands and fastboot install cwm....then fruitcakes or any rom should be good to go. But im waiting for GB to go fully public....just gonna enjoy 2.3.4 for now until everything is all sorted out.

Agree. I think the first things to do when the real OTA is out is actually compare with the leak one, so at least we have an idea how to proceed.
Good Luck!

Sorry but this is NOT TRUE:
"I can go from stock 2.3.4 OTA (no mods) with a locked bootloader to anything "
Anything in this case mean: NEED TO UNLOCK BL, NEED TO APPLIED ANY ROM BY CWM OR MOTO-FASTBOOT WAY
But here it is the CONs: UNTIL TODAY IF YOU APPLIED THE LEAK STOCK GB YOU CAN NOT RSD ANY MOTOROLA SBF, THAT MEAN INCLUDED GB SBF BECAUSE IS NOT OUT THERE YET, SO YOU NEVER WILL GET BACT TO "REAL" STOCK OR BE SURE 100% YOU CAN RECEIVED IN THE FUTURE ANY OTA DIRECTLY FROM MOTO/ATT IS NOT BEEN TESTED YET

Yes, but when you flash pudding, you will get soft bricked (don't worry) you'll have 5 seconds to put your phone is fastboot mode, when done just continue the process and you should be fine. I unlocked on official 2.3.4, and I'm doing good

OP says "i used the official att update", so I'm assuming he's already on Gingerbread. No need to flash a full SBF just to unlock it then, and flashing full SBFs is no longer recommended except as a last resort.
Pudding.sbf is the way to go (just a megabyte), and here's the easiest way to do it:
Automatic bootloader UNLOCK/ROOT for AT&T 1.26/1.57/1.83/4.5.91
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871
OP, this is as safe as it gets. If you are already on GB then you will get a soft brick after the initial unlock attempt but mramirezusa script warns you of this and tells you exactly what to do about it. Just make sure that you have the latest Motorola USB drivers installed before you do any of this.
The script will unlock your phone, install a special ClockworkMod for Atrix 4G, and install su for root access. After this is all done you will want to apply any future updates via ClockworkMod in your phone's Fastboot menu. Don't mess around with SBFs unless you absolutely need to, and definitely do not apply an SBF for an earlier version of the phone's firmware or you will hard brick your phone.
Good luck!

For your 4.1.26 unlocked phone it would be easiest to just do the full 4.5.91 SBF with unlocked bootloader and /preinstall root as another poster suggested: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182526&highlight=sbf+2.3.4

[Q] How to get phone completely back to stock

My phone currently is rooted with CM7 installed, but I've been having some connectivity issues, so I need to send it back to AT&T to get it fixed/replaced.
Is it possible to get it all the way back to stock so that they will still honor my warranty?
What is wrong with you people that refuse to search and read!? Dont just expect us to answer the same questions over and over because you are too lazy to read and too dumb to understand you voided your warranty.
I understand I voided my warranty, and I knew what I was doing when I rooted/unlocked bootloader/installed CM7. I wasn't fully expecting to be able to get it back to stock, but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.
It def wont hurt to search and read since this same question has been asked and answered 17 times. It does hurt to start a new thread about the same old subject.
Just rsd back to stock. If on gingerbread then use fruitcakes from samcripp
Alright, I'm sorry. You can go ahead and lock this then.
EDIT: At Shadow, I have a backup in CWM of stock. The main part I was worried about was the unlocked bootloader, but I guess that's not removable.
From what i've read, you can use rsd to flash the stock sbf and the unlocked text will be removed. There are a few posts here and also a video on youtube about relocking the ATRIX bootloader.

Correct, the unlocked bootloader is going to remain unlocked (although it's possible to get rid of the unlocked message when you boot up) and use fruitcakes from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009 if you're on gingerbread to go back to a stock rom. Just use intall from zip in CWM. If you're not on gingerbread use this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072

So does using the fruitcakes through cwm remove the unlocked? I was under the impression that using fruitcakes was just like flashing any other .zip rom and the "unlocked" would remain.

Back when I flashed older stock versions with RSD, the unlocked would disappear. Yesterday I flashed a fruitcake for the first time, but the unlocked was still there. So something about the sbf files got rid of the unlocked text. This means that installing a fruitcake won't get rid of it, but it's definitely possible. I don't know how though, sorry. You could try flashing a 2.3.4 sbf but that's highly discourage because it causes hard bricks.

[Q] SOLVED - CWM won't boot into recovery

Need some help please.
I have Telstra Atrix with ota gingerbread, unlocked BL, rooted.
I can't get it to boot into cwm recovery.
I installed ROM Manager from market, flashed CWM 2.0.2.0 , selected Reboot into Recovery but it only gets to the triangle. From there I can hold down Vol Up+VolDown and get to Basic Android recovery.
I have deleted the racing car app as suggested in one thread to make room, but no help.
If I power off and boot it from Power+Vol Down it comes up "Failed to boot 2"
Can't find a solution in XDA or Google. Any help appreciated.
See if you can fastboot flash a recovery image
sent from my Atrix via XDA premium
Most likely need to delete "install-recovery.sh" @ /system/etc, if it's there, then try re-installing CWM Recovery, and see if that works.
Thanks fellas.
Turns out I had lost my unlock BL by flashing the Telstra Froyo sbf from the xda Atrix Firmwares Superthread.
Reflashed the pudding and it's unlocked again. Actually romracer explained it better in his thread. I thought you couldn't relock bootloader. CWM recovery works now.

U can't actually relock the boot loader, it "Burns a fuse" inside the unit when u unlock. But flashing an .sbf makes it appear as if it's locked again.

Yeah thanks. Romracer explained it to me. It doesn't seem to be common knowledge at all. So people flashing sbf's of stock roms are effectively losing root. I spent hours trying to figure it out and get info searching and asking questions. Anyway, all good now and I appreciate the assistance.
On another point do you know how I can get the Telstra radio so I can use it with custom roms? My phone use is way better since installing Telstra stock Gingerbread ota. If I flash another rom I'll lose it won't I? It is N_01.100.00R
Edit: thanks to @Msd24200 and @marko! for pointing out that Radio remains unchanged when flashing cm7. Also discovered where to get the zip of this radio if I lose it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15787709&postcount=1

[Q] Atrix 4g At&t bl unlocked, flash 4.5.91 SBF question

Hello to all
I receive an atrix 4g locked to at&t usa. I unlocked with a code, after i unlock the BL.
I install cwm and romracer and flash CM7(2.3.6) rom from sd.
After i flash Darkside(2.3.5) rom. Now i want to return back to stock.
I have some small problems, the soft keys light is very dimm and the wifi signal is very low compared with my previous iphone 4.
The question is: is it safe to flash 4.5.91(2.3.4) stock sbf with rsd?
I know that the other option are fruitcakes but i just want to know if i can flash this vers with rsd.
System version: 4.5.133.mb860.att.en.us
Android version 2.3.5
Baseband: N_01.77.30P
I read many threads about but i'm still in the "fog". I know that the answer is somewere on the forum and sorry for opening another thread.
Thanks a lot for understanding.
While it's not recommended to use RSDlite after unlocking the bootloader, it will work as long as you only use the 4.5.91 GB2.3.4 SBF (signed). I have done it twice but at my own risk of course.
If you need to return to stock you can flash the fruitcakes, which are stock files. This method is definitely recommended over sbf.

Will flashing the SBF via RSD re-lock the bootloader? I need to take my phone in for a warranty swap (hardware issue) and don't want them to know I unlocked the phone.
It will hide the "unlocked" text during boot but it does not actually re-lock the bootloader. But when you think about it, even though they never intended for the end user to unlock the phone (hence the encrypted/locked bootloader), they still put the warning in if/when anyone unlocked the bootloader. It's there for a reason but I doubt they will find out.

So yeah I was impatient and tried to flash it without waiting for a reply. It kept failing and then all I would get on my phone was "Failed to boot 4 Starting RSD Protocol".
I ended up having to re-flash pudding, which was an adventure in itself (upgrading RSD, rebooting computer, trying different USB ports & cables before it would finally take). I think I will just take it in tomorrow even with it saying "Unlocked" and see if they will swap it out. I'm having touch screen issues with intermittent dead spots and ghost touches.
Did you try the stock SBF with the same combination of port and cable as you did when you successfully flashed pudding? I've heard those two factors can cause a bad flash in the past. I've read that a back port on the computer is recommended for sufficient power and using the actual OEM cable the phone came with is highly recommended as well.
Oh well, hope you get it swapped out, the people at the AT&T stores (if that's where you got it) usually don't pay no mind to that anyways.

I do have the same kind of query. I have AT&T Motorola Atrix 4G. I unlocked SIM, unlocked BL, rooted and installed CWM recovery, De-dexed and Webtop over HDMI hacked. I am still on AT&T Stock ROM 2.3.4 / Build # 4.5.91
I am facing random reboot problem while using 3G data service. I want to re-flash Stock 2.3.4 ROM. As per your reply in this thread I can only do this by flashing Fruitcakes as I have unlocked BL ... right? But in this link I am bit confused which file to download and flash amongst 2.3.4 / 2.3.5 att 4.5.133 / ATT 4.5.140 - 2.3.6? Also, after flashing a fruitcake can I still flash a custom ROM later on and at any point of time revert back to stock?
Thanks so much.

If you want to go back to stock, as in the last "Official" build released by Motorola, then you want the 2.3.4 build. And as long as you use the fruitcakes you can go back to a custom rom at any time.

Thanks for your early reply ... Just one thing more I wanna ask that if I flash ATT 4.5.140 - 2.3.6 fruitcake, then can I flash ATT 2.3.4 - 4.5.91 over it? Is the brick warning for going back to stock ATT ROM only after having BL unlocked?
Thanks for your help

Yes, you can flash 2.3.4 fruitcake over a 2.3.6 fruitcake. Just make sure to do the "wipes" (clear data/cache/factory reset/fastboot wipe/etc).
As far as I understand, the fruitcakes will not brick your device, as long as you follow the directions. The risk for bricking applies to using an SBF file and RSDlite.
