Galaxy S3 VS HTC EVO 4G LTE - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey everyone, I currently have the EVO 4g LTE, and really like it. although, I'm wondering if I should switch to the galaxy s3. do you guys think that its worth the switch?

oh, and I have a Samsung smart TV, so I can easily use allshare cast

I have the EVO LTE and can't wait to get this gs3 as soon as they are in stock.

Had an EVO LTE (3 Actually) all of which failed so I had my upgrade reset and am waiting for the SIII.
I assume the BB I bought mine from just had a bad bunch.
Having said that, there were three things that really dissapointed me on the EVO LTE
A) Screen...... Yup...sharp and clear. Lousy contrast, text was bland / gray on the internet and while it was big...it was just flat out to vanilla and boring.
B) WIFI dropping out and freezing up and then not switching to 3G when is should have was a killer as I use my phone for work and need internet connectivity in airports, on the road, etc.
C) The camera quite honestly totally disappointed me. I am a widely published photographer in my spare time so I know what I am doing with a camera as far as optimizing it and this one was never sharp enough and the WB ability sucked unless in bright daylight...that's where it shined.
D) Form factor....large and square corners don't go well with 55 year old arthritic thumbs. I thing the rounded corners of the SIII will be a huge help.
Overall, if I hadn't gotten three defective units that would lock up and the "fake battery pull" wouldn't rest them it was a nice phone....but quite honestly I simply found it underwhelming and boring as ****....even if I could have gotten one that worked correctly for more than three days.

Yeah I'm thinking that I should try it out. I've been with HTC for three years and it would be wise to change to Samsung for a bit

Sprint galaxy s2 reviews?

So who got the phone already and wants to share their experience? Is the screen size from 4.3 to 4.5 a big change? Also is there a notification led?

Just did a launch show for it yesterday (av tech)
Yes led, screen is nice and big, bigger battery (though I'm sure that huge screen drains it faster too), otherwise just a gs2 with cdma and wimax. their models had bugs but I don't know if they were running beta firmware...

I just got mine!
I just swapped my Moto Photon for the SGSII on sprint and it's great. I love the bigger screen and it's super thin. Does anyone know if this will be able to use the same roms and such or will there be a new xda section for the epic touch 4g?
I am thinking about switching my EVO 3d for galaxy s2. Still not sure if it's worth it. Anyone switch from evo 3d to epic 4g touch?
Check out this. I cannot believe Samsung ALREADY released source code for the sprint GS2 on the same day it is being released.
http://phandroid.com/2011/09/16/perfect-timing-samsung-epic-4g-touch-source-code-now-available/
Had it since Friday
So I ditch my HTC EVO for the new Galaxy last Friday. I have been waiting for some time to up grade my phone and was so disappointed by the EVO 3D epic fail HTC you would have done better to just replace the processor with a dual core and gone to a amoled screen and I would have happily upgraded. Then came the photon and I played with it for about a week and while I was for the most part impressed but it had some problems, phone calls silent or making it threw the day with out it freezing and having to reboot it. I decided to pass and am happy I waited for this phone. Great speed super responsive no glitches so far. The screen is amazing.I also love the voice recognition on this phone much crisper and acurate then my EVO. Having said that I do miss some of the HTC sense features and was pretty bummed that the phone does not support the NFC technology when both the model for the ATT and T-Mobile do. Instead you get his thing called sprint wallet. Umm lol I was really looking forward to Google Wallet but looks like the that technology of being able to pay for things using my phone is still years away. I know the iphone 5 is coming but am so comfortable with android I doubt that switching is really a option for me. In the end when you pair this phone with sprints 79.99 plan of unlimited text, data and cell to cell , its hard for me to believe there is a better deal out there for me in my area. (Feel luck that sprint works so well in my area)

Anybody here switch from an EVO or EVO3D?

Currently with Sprint and have an EVO 3D. Really thinking about switching now that Verizon's offering 4GB for $30. Is the Droid RAZR as cool as it seems? Any comparisons to the Evo/Evo 3D? Thanks.
I just made the switch from the Evo 3D (had an Evo 4G before that) for the same reasons. Things I've noted:
Negative first:
- For me at least, the RAZR does have shorter battery life than the 3D. It appears to have some idle issues. Using the "smart" actions helps this, but I'm still not 100% satisfied relative to the Evo3D.
- I somewhat miss Sense on the 3D although I think the RAZR is smoother with less lag
Positives:
- Hardware is very nice. I really like the lighter weight and reduced thickness
- For my area at least, Verizon's network is a huge improvement. 3G is much faster and of course I have very fast 4G now
- Radios are better. Wifi has better range and I think the cell radio is better also. I was using the Verizon PRL hack on my Evo3D previously and it didn't perform as well as the RAZR on Verizon
Overall I'm very happy with the change, although a big part of that is just getting off of Sprint's worthless network. The only real complaint is the battery life issue and not everyone seems to be experiencing it, so YMMV. It's not horrible either. With light/moderate use I can get 10-15 hours. Basically a full day.
I'm also thinking of switching from my 3D to the Razr. With Amazon's $0.01 on new contract deal and the double data promotion, I'm very tempted. My only hesitation is whether or not to wait for the Nexus. Is the Razr worth getting or should I wait for the Nexus?

I switched from the Evo 4G on Sprint to the Razr on Verizon and I agree with everything above. The Evo was great - the Razr is better. But the big difference is how much better the Verizon network is compared to the crappy and unreliable Sprint network. It's just gotten terrible in the last year.

Well you know you're going to get about a dozen opinions on that question.
My reasoning, which is not 100% based on fact, is IMO Motorola has some of the best radios and fringe reception was very important to me. I've also had some so-so experiences with Samsung which turned me off from the Nexus. But getting ICS and less bloatware, more pure Android would be nice. Just depends on what is most important to you. I have a friend that has the Epic 4G Touch on Sprint and is very happy with it (except for Sprints god forsaken network of course).
And I'm really jealous I missed the $.01 deal...

Just be careful to base your decision on more than software availability. ICS will come to every top tier phone, just be patient. Hardware should drive your choice; if you like the h/w, then get the phone, cuz h/w is the bottom line. No os or ota revision can completely eclipse the actual physical capability of the device.

i also swapped from the Evo3D to the RAZR.. it's an awesome improvement. i used to think sense was great but the RAZR's UI is sooo smooth and the screen looks amazing compared to the 3vo.. not to mention the network, it's not even comparible.. i don't know how i lasted so long on sprint lol.. the look and feel of the phone is badass too..
definitely a good switch IMO
Well I still have sprint (just cant get over the unlimited data) and Have the epic 4g touch but I had an Evo 4g, and then a Evo 3d so I think I can chime in on this. Im one of what seems like only a few who loved the Evo 3d which to me the only problem I had with it was the thickness and weight. The Razr is light and thin and smooth but dont think that your going to notice a performance boost from the hardware alone, cause you wont.
Now network performance is another thing up until recently sprint had great reception for me but lately, its horrible and I know towards the end of next year and the next they will have completely changed the network and will have one of if not the best network out. But lets face it we pay our bill every month and lets just say in this instance time is most definetly money.
So to recap
Pros
Thin-Smooth-dual core- Will def see ICS sooner than later-NETWORK
Cons
No ICS currently-almost no development support as of now-camera
Get the phone you'll love it. And if your like me and getting it for .01 its a no brainer. Your practically getting the same phone as the Galaxy Nexus -ICS.
I did the $0.01 Amazon deal and ordered the RAZR today... I'm switching from Sprint and the Evo 4G. I just got so fed up with Sprint's crappy network. I go visit my mom (where I originally bought the Evo), and I have zero reception. I go to visit my dad who lives near a major city, and I have zero reception and have to charge my phone 3-4 times a day because of it unless I put it into airplane mode. Ridiculous. I was a little late placing my order today, so the phone is on back order until December 8. I'll update with my initial reactions in a couple weeks.
EDIT: Oh, and charging it 3-4 times a day because of crappy reception is with an extended battery, too!

You didn't miss it, it's on til the 28th! I got mine for a penny, got it delivered the next day for free, and I couldn't be happier! I switched from Sprint (OG EVO-> EVO 3D-> Photon) because their CS SUCKS. After 6 EVOs (4 for me, and 2 for my fiancée after I upgraded) and nothing offered but crappy refurbished phones and insults, with no way to escalate issues, it was time to go.
I really loved my Photon, but after their CS made my fiancée cry, it was time to go.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE my RAZR! It's like my Photon, but WAY FASTER! I'm only 3 days in, and the first day, I had some worries about battery life after it dropped from 100% to 70% after an hour or 2, but I was patient, and knew that it takes a few days for everything to settle in, and OS, UI & kernels to play well together. Yesterday, I got exactly 11 hours out of it with HEAVY usage.
I'm not a big fan of Blur, but after setting everything up the way I like (LP pro, widgets, and junk), it's amazing! Looking forward to ICS early next year, too!
My opinion may be biased, since instead of hunting down the CS rep that made my lady cry, I dumped them, but either way, I'm happy!

[Q] Trade iPhone 4S in for EVO 4G LTE?

Hey xda. In March I switched to sprint and got an iPhone 4S, but I'm finding Sprint's service on the iPhone to be less than stellar (every single call I make or receive drops or cuts out). I know it's not my area (Houston-Dallas) as my father has Sprint on his EVO 4G and he doesn't have the same problems. I've been through every iPhone on AT&T as well as a Nexus One and an Atrix. I love the iPhone interface, but I'm quickly becoming disgruntled with the issues I'm having and am thinking about going back to Android. Would I be happy with an EVO 4G LTE, should I wait for the Galaxy SIII, or should I just keep my 4S?
absolutely 100% recommend the evo lte. i am still using the original evo 4g and love it. everyone else in my family has the 4s and i have to say it seems pretty limited sometimes compared to somethings i can do with my evo and i almost never have dropped calls accept for in extremely low signal areas which i pretty much no where by me haha.
edit: also i wouldn't bother waiting for the sgs3. its going to have the same processor as the new evo since no quad core currently supports lte and plus htc has much better build quality. so like i said i can't see you being dissapointed in the new evo if you get it. and if you don't like it theres always the 30 day return grace period.

I am basically in your exact situation. I live in the Dallas area and I made the dumb mistake of getting a 4s. Two things made my decision; 1st I had the 3D and support for it was diminishing so I got bored and I had an opportunity to get the 4s new without using my upgrade for about $100. I hate it's speeds, it's connections, interface is okayyy, So many apps are pay that I got free or optioned to support on Android, iMessage never works ect... I deserve every flame I get. I honestly hate the 4s.
I WAS 110% on bored with new Evo but I would like a little more confirmation on LTE. I have owned 3 variations of the Evo (OG, 3D, Shift) and am a big fan but if DFW won't have anything better than 3G for awhile I might hold out. By the time I get a confirmation I am hoping the new iPhone specs are released since it too will be LTE finally and iOS6 is rumored to be a complete redesign. I'm not he greatest fan of iOS, I think Android fits me better but the iPhone 5 is shaping up to peak my interest.
I almost pre-ordered but I think I am going to stick it out awhile and let the phone hit the masses awhile. As far as the GSIII, if you are going back to Android stay HTC, the reviews of both the EVO is edging it out on everything but of course the screen cause no one can really beat Samsung except Apple but every review is saying the Evo is still a very high contender.
From what I hear, the voice quality on the evo lte is same if not better than on the galaxy nexus. I had a chance to play with the GN at a local store recently. All other things aside, the call quality was amazing, clear, vibrant, loud - in fact, with the ear piece on the maximum setting, it was TOO loud! I can't remember the last cell phone I had that had that capability (maybe an old motorola razr).

Galaxy s3?

So I have to ask, what's the hype about the galaxy? I mean why doesn't everyone here have it? XD not trying to start something, but just wondering if its worth getting, best buy told me I have 14 days to decide if I want to keep this phone...
Sent from my EVO using XDA
You actually have 30 days. 14 to return and reverse contract. Anyways I work at a best buy mobile and the Samsung rep came in last week with a gs3 and I have to say its a nice phone. I came from the s2 and really it feels almost about the same. The screen does look more colorful and brighter but sometimes its just to much. Picture quality though did look better on the s3. Took out my evo and we took a couple pictures and u could notice the difference. HTC EVO has faster camera and better video quality imo. One thing I really loved about the s3 was the water lockscreen. Just seeing the ripples through the screen as u unlock it and it loads the homescreen is just beautiful. Other than that though its just like my s2. Build quality is not there but that's just Samsung. Just wondering if Verizon's s3 is going to be different. When we select preorder for the phones, sprints att says marble white/pebble blue. On Verizon it says ceramic white/blue. Wonder if they are using a different type of casing.

My wife wants a evo lte and she won't let me talk her out of it

I'm interested in some feedback on this. I used to love HTC. Had the touch pro, touch pro 2, evo4g and the evo 3d. All fantastic. I wasn't impressed with the evo lte, so I got the s3 on the black Friday deal.
She is certain the evo lte is a great phone that will keep her happy for two years, like the original evo has. It seems everything I've read says otherwise and I'm looking for some first hand experience.
Cost is an issue, but I don't want her locked in a contract with a piece of garbage. She is not a geek and her evo isn't even rooted.
Thanks for any thoughts.

I have had an LTE and there are 4-5 around work and they all love them.. Great battery and fast.
I would buy one all over again!
Couldn't see getting an evo and keeping it for two years without it being rooted. Great phone but not out of the box
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Let me put it this way... Mine is stock, and only rooted to use adblock and T backup. I am in charge of Mobility at a very large company, and I can use any device I wish from any vendor whenever I want. I currently have an iPad, a Nexus 7, an iPhone 5, an HTC "Titan II" Windows phone, and an Evo 4G LTE (all corporate owned, but they pay my bills). My assistant just IM'd me to ask if I wanted him to send over the new One X (the answer is yes of course). My wife owns an SIII.
I'm saying all this to make this point: My daily driver is the EVO, and I expect it will remain so for now, even with the new One X and the S4. I really like it that much. The performance is better than my Nexus 7, I love the kickstand and the expandable RAM, and the camera is very important to me (I'm reading the new X One is so-so in normal light).
So there you have it... from someone that could have anything, I prefer my EVO. Maybe for dumb reasons, but that's my vote.
thanks for all the feedback, feel much better about the whole thing now

I've had mine for almost a year now, and I'm happy with it. I would by another one if I had to do it over again.
It may have some quirks, but what phone doesn't? I had to do the LTE airplane dance in the beginning, but with a few radio updates and better LTE coverage, that has become a thing of the past.

The EVO is a great phone. Was well worth it when I got it but I still don't have hardly any lte in my area so sticking with my 3D until I was upgrade eligible would've been my best bet.
I have had all the phones u listed and now have LTE. By far the best of them all. I am very pleased with mine.

Love my Evo. I would get the One if I wasn't so far from my upgrade but whatever. No complaints here.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
I know the point has been made, but I definitely second that emotion ...I don't know, I think anyone who loves the Original Evo4g, or anyone coming from the original Evo, will fall in love with this phone. It's like it's the same exact phone but with all these great improvements, yet still remaining the same good ole Evo4g...(as opposed to some of the various other attempts at "improving" the original Evo4g ie Evo3d, etc.).
Although, like many here I too am very interested in checking out the One(m7) as I haven't gotten to hold it in hand yet, and it sounds impressive...But somehow, I got the feeling I'll be with this EvoLTE for a long while to come. I've absolutely loved it since day one....BTW..I too could have any phone(Sprint anyways I want, I work with them everyday, and I'm not tied into a contract) but for me this is the one.
No regrets on LTE, love this phone. It will be going to Fiancé here shortly when One Black drops, she has been happy with her HTC shift for a while now, but is slowly going downhill. For me I just have to be on latest. For buying a new phone I can't imagine why someone would choose LTE over One, price difference is negligible.
Sent from Taptalk on EVO LTE soff on some awesome custom Rom!
If you don't have lte, or expect it in the near future I would go with the Evo lte because it has the about to do data and voice at the same time.
The new One, does not have svdo so you can't do them at the same time.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
First off, what kinds of responses did you expect coming into a Evo LTE forum? You're gonna get positive reviews. That said, if she loved her OG Evo not even rooted, she will LOVE this device. The svdo is nice to have, too.
Also, as for not having LTE any time soon,...my area wasn't even on s4grus' radar for soon, and I started getting it last week.
Lastly, the guy who said he hasn't held a One in hand yet, I did today, without being tethered by a cable. It was amazing, the feel in hand was so natural and awesome. Getting it ASAMFP.
Your wife will love this device. My only complaint is the overly aggressive background task killing, and not comfortable to hold (I Dont use a case, but a case does fix that). For some reason, on the LTE, I feel compelled to put my pinky under bottom of device for support and it starts to cramp up. One does not make me do that and fits the hand more naturally.
Today at sprint, I saw a ZTE flash. It's a cheap phone (50$ on contract) and was surprised at it's specs, and impressive display and 12mp camera. A bit thick, but for a cheap phone, I was impressed. It comes with 4.0.3 and is a pretty unmolested AOSP ROM, very nice. If limited on cash, seems like a really nice option to have.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
I have an EVO LTE and a Photon Q LTE. Both fantastic phones, but I would recommend the EVO over the Photon q any day. And as for the comment about getting positive reviews in this forum... Take a gander at the Sidekick 4G forums and ask the same question... or even the Photon q forums. They all either say "wait for the new One" or "buy anything but this for X solid reason." My EVO LTE has some hiccups but is reliable, gets great service (I don't have any issues grabbing the occasional LTE when I travel through michigan), and the battery life is amazing. If you turn data off at night you can easily squeeze 1 to 2 days out of this battery with moderate to heavy use.
Overall I would recommend this phone, if not simply for the fact that it's like an OG EVO, but better. A lot better.
