I've seen something posted on this issue before, but I am hoping to bring more attention to it since this is a significant bug. When using the camera with the auto-flash setting, the camera will not flash in low light when using the hardware button. Specifically when you half press first and then full press. If you press the hardware button all the way down really fast, the flash will fire. Also, pressing the on screen button causes the flash to fire as well.

Not sure what the point of re-posting the issue is?
I noticed since you mentioned it. I didn't get a flash when i half press the camera button. But my question is who cares? Just press the damn camera button all the way! How is this even considered a "significant bug"?

Not a bug it locks focus and exposure when holding the half press. If u want it to use flash don't hold the half press for to long

I understand what you mean, but that's not how a regular camera works with a dual stage button.
Also, this reasoning doesn't really make sense because if you have the flash mode set to always on, it still flashes from a half-press to full-press.
We dont have a regular camera, we have a phone.

I was bummed when I realized this as well. I don't know why they couldn't just make the led light up on half press. That would help focus as well. They screwed up on the camera key in my opinion.

I noticed this too last night, had to turn flash to on. Didn't try on screen shutter button... Makes sense for it to not change the flash after locking exposure on the half press, so the real issue is the half press should trigger the flash as previously posted...

Yeah, this is a tough one for me. I understand locking the exposure, but a regular camera determines if the the flash is needed on half press and adjusts the exposure accordingly. Also, what a regular camera displays on screen before shooting doesn't reflect the actual exposure settings when the camera takes the shot. I suppose the Evo may not be smart enough to determine the exposure before a short burst of the flash fires. Also, there's the zero shutter lag feature that they don't want to slow down.
I'm curious if making half-press turn on the flash could possibly improve flash photos since it could take a little more time to adjust exposure. Flash photos on this phone don't seem to be adjusting to the correct exposure and focus a lot of the time anyway.

Looks like HTC improved some things with the camera but my major complaint is still there. Even with every possible enhancement and option (including image review) turned off, there is still a 0.5 to 1.0 second lag when taking a picture in bright lighting even after everything is already focused with a half press of the shutter. I think it is improved a little, but still a far cry from what it should be. C'mon HTC: if a weak iPhone can take a picture instantly, surely you can do better than this!
Mike
I don't seem to have this shutter lag. The phone snaps the picture pretty instantly after I press the button.
Yeah, I'd say do a full wipe & reflash. 0 shutter lag here. I can't even get the image to speed blur while in motion.
This is with the latest 2.3.4 update.

For my fastest shots, I use the onscreen button, the camera button has a delay. Auto focus is off.
Yes, rooted with Revolutionary & using Haus' Stock Deodexed 2.08.651.2.
Just updated my wife's phone via the OTA. Hers has never been rooted and will likely never be rooted so I just took the OTA. Her's is exactly like mine. There's at least a half second delay on every shot. I've tried the dedicated camera button and the on screen button. Regardless of the settings or the button pressed, the camera doesn't take the picture until about a half second after you press the button.
Edit: I've never seen one of these phones not have horrendous shutter lag so if you think you have close to no lag, could you please post a short video showing this? I simply can't believe it until I see it.
Mike
I don't have another camera sorry. Sold it back when I had my EVO 4G.
I'm surprised you have this problem.
Try turning up the Exposure & ISO to 800 as well. This also speeds up the shutter on cameras. Will it be instant, I'm not sure but it'll definitely be faster.
Let me know if that works.

On a side note regarding the camera, what happened to the shutter sound on/off option? Now it's on by default and hitting menu in the camera app doesn't show it, am I crazy or is it gone?

Nothing changes it. Already tried ISO 800, shooting in direct sunlight, and every other trick I could think of. Minimum shutter lag is about a half second. Only thing I can figure is that some people call a half second "instant". It's far from it. Went to the Rays game tonight. Indoor lighting was bright as daylight: no flash needed. All pics were good at least and not blurry due to the fast shutter. But between my rooted Evo 3D and my wife's totally stock one, we missed almost every shot even when taking casual shots. And when you hand someone the camera to take a group shot, they press the shutter halfway to focus and then press the button the rest of the way and it NEVER works. Everyone always starts putting the camera down and the actual picture is taken after their hands are dropping because they've already pressed the button and nothing happened until a half second later. Again, this is with all auto stuff turned off, flash off, auto focus off, etc. Unless you are taking a picture of a rock or something else that isn't ever going to move, this camera is totally useless.
Mike
Have you tried wiping the SD card? Or used something other than the stock one?

No wipey wipey, but... my wife and I both use a SanDisk 32MB and my friend and his wife use the stock SD card. No difference. Half second delay on every shot, occasionally longer. I wouldn't think the SD card or it's speed would come into play for actually taking the shot: only afterward in storing it.

This will save your power button. This app uses motion detected by your proximity sensor to turn your phone on.
Just installed it and it works awesome. Works so good you can just hold your phone and wiggle your thumb in front of the sensor and it turns on. All with the same hand
Here is the link to it in the market. Enjoy

Hmm... I'm giving this a try now. I'm worried how it will function in my pocket. Also, I'm more comfortable using my phone in my right hand.and reaching the sensor with the right hand isn't totally comfortable. But, I'll play with it and see how I like it. Cool app anyways. So thanks!

Been testing this for a while now. Doesn't use any battery so that's awesome.
I had to use this on my O.G. Evo because i had worn out the power button from flashing too much. Seems like it worked ok but at times it would lock up where I couldnt get it to turn the phone on to save my life. Ofcurse I'm sure they've gone thru plenty of updates since then.

That's what I use but it doesn't have the option to turn the screen on by tapping the sensor. I might have to check this other one out.
Why do I need to "save" my power button? That doesn't make sense, lol. As long as you're not bashing the power button to turn it on you're fine..
Tried out all ways to reliably trigger the prox sensor with one hand.
Finally fingered it out Holding the phone in my left hand, I can use my forefinger to double tap the edge of the phone just over the prox switch.
I don't have any real use for this....but it is pretty cool!
A pretty slick maneuver I found was to quick draw from my holster, then hold the phone towards the bottom, then do a quick double swipe over your sleeve then your unlocking thumb is in the right place!

Wouldn't the difference be that you have to just lightly tap the proximity sensor while you have to actually press down on the power button? I don't foresee any paint rubbing off around the sensor.

The camera on my galaxy note seems is very slow at taking pictures especially when I use flash. the problem is that after the flash goes off it takes couple of second for the shutter to take place and for the picture to save. I tried saving the pics on the phone or the sd card but it makes no difference. I also tried to disable the power setting and even reset the camera settings but no luck. I never had this issue on my old infuse. Any suggestions?
I also find the camera to be freakishly slow.

I haven't tried to turn off google + yet but it seems to me like the problem has to do with the flash because it takes pictures faster without the flash. I was just panicking that I had a defective phone since my google searches haven't turned up any results about the camera being slow for other users.
I am very surprised that the camera has this issue at all since my old infuse did not have that problem. Also my phone lags sometimes after i unlock the screen which is a problem that other people seem to have.

I agree. I also turned off blink detection and the Google+ auto upload and it seemed to speed it up a bit. I am thinking the camera lag seems more evident on this phone because of the visual effect of the shutter. On other phones the frame just freezes then it saves without a shutter effect. I wish there was a way to turn that off

I got ICS Camera+ also, but one thing was a back-breaker for me: video is taken as 3gp? WTeff is with that?
i think the issue is the shutter "effect" as someone mentioned. if you take a picture, as soon as the image freezes on screen, that's the shot that was taken. try it... i put a cup in front of me and click the button, and before the camera did the shutter closing effect, i moved the cup. the picture that was taken was at the right time. it just sucks if you are trying to get a couple of shots together... waiting for that silly animation...
also Camera ICS works on the stock ROM, but doesnt let you touch a point on the screen to focus... which is really nice about the stock camera app, if you ask me.
I use Fast Burst camera app. Takes a picture in a split second. No waiting.

I'm looking to try out a Note. But want to know if there is a feature in some kernel or flashable zip of some kind to achieve this. I searched around but got mixed results so I'm not certain. thank you in advance.
I remember having that option on my Vivid. However, I do believe that is an HTC/Sense option. Someone correct me?

It doesn't really need to be 'swept' to wake. all I want is something that I can touch (or hold) on the front screen or bottoms to wake this thing up. anything? if not, I think what I'll do is go for the international version which, its middle button wakes the note up.
thanks!
you can flash a cm based rom and set device to stay awake while charging. you can also set to wake with volume keys. unless you mount phone with both sides blocked. i personaly set to stay awake and have modified my sunglass holder to hold phone. sits just above rear view mirror and works great even though power button is down and cant be pressed. if you want to stay with touchwiz screen times out at 10 minutes and no option to stay awake. however if you have sqlite editor you can change the database to stay awake but i have had issues with this not wanting to stick after reboot.

no. it will only wake if it senses a proximity change
so if you use lightlock and just cover the sensor, nothing will happen. if you cover the sensor for a set period that you choose and then remove your hand, then your device will wake.
you should try it out. it makes using your phone feel futuristic. impresses a lot of people especially when you show somebody with an iphone lol
