[Q] Soft Brick > How to revert to stock? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm looking for a little help here. I've been out of the loop when it comes to my phone for a little bit now. Because of this I've decided to come check out whats new and since I've been getting frustrated with my gps, and a few other things not working properly.
I was using miui 109160 which was based off android 2.3.5 and decided I would upgrade to ICS more specifically CM9 (nightly). I remember from when I installed miui many, many months ago, after you did all the steps you could either go to miui or cm. Also after you had the base install, any upgrades could be done with a straight flash. Because of that I thought I might get lucky and be able to upgrade with a simple flash, but no such luck. During the install the phone rebooted and was stuck on the splash vibrant screen. I tried pulling the battery and rebooting into recovery by the volume buttons (no luck there). I figure my last hope is download mode & odin, which luckily I could get into download mode. I have some old instructions on how to odin back to stock using Eugene's method (with his froyo that does not brick rom then going to true stock 2.1) but during this process odin does not go farther than the first step (modem). I have used this solution to revert back to stock at least 5 times and cannot figure out why it is not working now. I have included this process below in case anyone has had experience with this happening.
Could someone please direct me to the best way of getting back to stock via download mode? I found a couple partial instructions/tips which I was going to try but before I did I read another thread about a soft bricked phone which turned into a hard brick and don't want to chance it since I'm already half way there
Thanks in advance for any help/advice you guys can give!
ODIN Process:
Code:
Added!!
Odin v.2 engine (ID:3)..
File analysis..
Get PIT for mapping..
Firmware update start..
cache.rfs
modem.bin
Once it gets to modem it doesn't do anything more, it just stops.

Try just using the JFD files:
Extract the PIT from this rar: http://files.androidspin.com/downlo...in/samsung/vibrant/&file=s1_odin_20100512.rar
Here's the tar:
http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=androidspin/samsung/vibrant/&file=T959UVJFD.tar
Source: http://androidspin.com/2010/08/09/how-to-restore-or-recover-your-samsung-vibrant/

Sounds like you didnt hit repartition. Load the above JFD and check repartition.

I've been trying this all night. It makes it 2 the second step now (FACTORYFS) and distance of the progress bar varies. But at some point it will stop and the phone's screen will go all green, white, or something like the picture below. Also I have tried with repartition and no repartition, same results.

Maybe try this:

Also what bootloaders are you on? Id say Froyo cause it looks like the "Rainbows" on your screen.
Bootloaders CAN brick the device do be carefull - you may want to upgrade to the Gingerbread bootloaders.

Thats not the bootloader screen, when using oden it goes from the download screen (yellow triangle/digging android) to this. When it happens odin just stops and sits so it doesnt finish the stock install

Thanks!!! After odin froze on me this thing was beyond gone! heimdall brought it back without a problem. Thanks a lot!!!

Good to hear. After I built and used that KB5 1-Click I find I don't use Odin anymore.

So I tried both of these methods and nothing seems to work.
When I get tried the Heimdall One-Click 1.3.1 method, it installs and everything is good and then it goes into Android system recovery. Here is the log

Try a different USB Port on your computer, I have been stuck at the modem.bin a few times but only with a certain USB port. It always works if I use regular USB port and not the faster port on my PC, worth a try.

Similiar Problem
Hey guys,
Noob here so relax and please help me out. Okay, I attempted to flash Voodoo Lagfix to my Samsung Vibrant T959 with 2.1. Somehow, it ended up saying conversion successful and now only shows the repetitive samsung/vibrant screen. Got it into dl mode, using Odin3,used stock tar and pit. It keeps getting stuck at the "cache.rfs" part. No luck in reconnecting after taking the battery out. Help me out. I have tried downloading the stock rom again but I am unable for some odd reason (it keeps stopping at 26.1mb). Anywho, please helppppp

No luck in reconnecting? Just to clarify, does that mean your phone is getting no power at all or it won't connect to your pc anymore? If the phone still turns on, what does your screen look like now?

I am assuming when you flashed back you forgot to flash a stock kernel at the same time. try using odin to get back to stock and you should be fine

Was gonna ask the same thing.
If you can you should be able to to use ODIN to get back to stock.
Sounds like you forgot to flash a 2.1 kernel before you rebooted.
yaddayaddayadddaaaaa
Surprised no one has said "OMG! WRONG SECTION! I'M NOT GONNA HELP YOU!"
But yea, flash a kernel if you can can. Check the Bionix website for them. Also, in the future, make sure you READ everything pertaining to a rom you flash. If you had, you would have known you needed to flash a 2.1 kernel if you wanted to revert.
Odin 1.3
Yeah I've done the same thing before. When you downgrade from 2.2 you must flash a 2.1 kernal first. Best thing to do is re-flash back to stock with Odin. Make sure you use Odin version 1.3 and not version 1. Search the dev forum for how to flash with Odin. The Vibrant is very hard to brick permanently so you should be able to recover from this soft brick.

I had the same problem just two days ago and I thought I ruined my phone. Follow the instructions in this post
it saved my phone. Do not format your phone with cwm. Bad things happen.

use Odin to restore your rom!
I think the easiest thing to do is flash any of the ROM that have Kernels in them, I have only had to use odin once, and that was just to try it out. I always keep stuff on my card, But i guess if you didnt going back to stock through odin would be the next best thing.

Depends on what you flash, but even if its stock with no root, root is very easy on the phone, just do whatever worked for you the first time.

[Q] noob with bricked vibrant - no download mode

I'm searching for this original ROM and most of the links don't work anymore. I found a file with a .md5 extension but odin wouldn't recognize it and i changed the file extension to .pit. Tried to flash that in odin (might have been an old version) and now I'm bricked. Now I'm unable to get into recovery mode or download mode. Seriously feeling stupid now. Please help.
will it boot up at all?
You need one of these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Download-Mo...690605?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item35b2e6182d
Then you need to flash the correct files and NOT experiment!
It is not. It goes to the (Phone)...!...(PC) screen. This will just turn on and off again if I try to enter recovery or download mode. I definitely bit off more than I can chew. From what I've been seeing the jig may not even work.
Try this, straight from my guide...

If you are getting a "Phone.. ! ..Computer" image (seen above) when booting phone, yes, you are bricked but it is reversible! Just follow these steps...
Make sure you have ODIN OPEN with admin privileges!
1.) Take off your back cover, remove your sim & mirco sd card.
2.) Remove your battery.
Make sure you have the USB plugged into your PC but NOT your phone!
3.) Hold the volume buttons.
4.) Put the battery in.
5.) Put the USB in.
You don't necessarily need the download mode image to be present. As long as you are getting the COM ID to light up yellow in ODIN, just flash back to stock like normal.

Ok, I want to try this but I need to know I'm flashing the right file. I've read that I'm supposed to use hashtab to determine this, but I have no clue what it is telling me. If anyone has a working link to something reliable, that'd be awesome.
Sure, give me one minute an i'll get it for you...

Also, hashtab tells you a file's "md5" or the file's fingerprint. This way you can compare the md5 of the downloaded file with the md5 I've given you. In short Hashtab allows you to double check if the files are clean or corrupted.

I just bought one of these JIGS. It seems cheap enough and will come in handy, cant wait for it to come in as the Vibrant is my sons (My old one) and I tried Flashing the Gingerbread Bootloaders to Upgrade his ROM and I Bricked it!! LMAO
Hi I think I soft bricked my Vibrant also. I was trying to restore the stock firmware using Odin. I know I've used the right firmware because I double and triple checked the hash for both the bit and PDA files. I flash these two and whe it restarts it gets stuck after the Vibrant logo and a battery charging screen if my phone is connected. Any advice? I've tried Eugunenes no brick mod, one click unbrick, and the AIO toolbox.

Problem with Samsung Vibrant, no download no recovery mode
Hi,
While I was trying to flash my Samsung vibrant with "aokp_vibrantmtd_unofficial_2013-04-18" in recovery mode, it rebooted by itself without flashing and stuck after the bootloader image and shows a red android robot with Powered by Mackay Kernel below. I try to reboot it into download or recovery mode with all the possible combinations, I get no answer.
Please, can someone help me?

Links for Factory Kernals not woking?

Hey guys,
I'm trying to flash the S2 back to UK Factory kernal as I want to take it back for a warranty claim.
I've unrooted the phone so far, but bnow want to restore the phone with a stock/factory kernal, however the links for the factory kernals in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 don't work. I keep getting messages that the files have been removed due to copyright violati ions etc...
Can somebody please help?
Cheers
Try here, if not Samfirmware, if not you'll have to flash an entire stock rom (which is what I'd probably do regardless if I was returning a phone for a warranty claim).
Thanks for the links MistahBungle, but what do you mean by 'flash an entire stock rom'. Is it not sufficient to just flash with a kernal from the links?
How difficult is it to do the entire stock rom? I'd rather be safe than sorry, if flashing the entire stock rom keeps the warranty inatct...
cheers
here you go stock rom ,kernek and modems
I mean, instead of flashing just the kernel, flashing the entire rom package (which also obviously contains the kernel). You don't absolutely have to do this, it's just what I'd do (just my personal preference).
It's no more difficult to flash a whole rom, just the download will take longer as it's a couple of hundred MB Vs a few MB for a kernel.
Do whatever you're comfortable with ;-)

:S connected phone in dowload mode and ran Odin, downloaded firmware file from site that apk_xiz suggested (downloaded one that had XX in the region, as that should be the one for UK?)
Loaded tar.nd5 file in pda on odin and hit start and the the phone just stays in downloading and nothing happens now?? Odin says all hread completed suceed 0 and failed 0?
Can somebody please shed some light
Check Windoze Task Manager & kill Kies/related processes if they're running. If they're not, go thru as many of the following steps as you need to:-
*Must run Odin as administrator in Windoze.
*Try different USB ports; you must be using a 'powered' or mainboard port.
*Try different USB cables (particularly the cable that came with the phone if you're not using it now)
*Try different versions of Odin (search on here/Google)
*Uninstall Kies, reboot, redownload & reinstall it, reboot, try the flash again. Also run Windoze Update.
And if all this fails, try a different PC. And if it doesn't work first go on the 2nd PC, go thru the above steps on that PC.

Thank you so much guys, think Its going back to stock now, still downloading as I type...
I've noticed though that the bianry counter states 3 downloads :S I take it I need to buy a 'JIG' tool to reset this counter back to '0'?
Or can I just do a factory erase/reset by holding up menu and power then selecting restore/erase option, would that reset the counter too?
Yep, buy a jig on eBay (costs a couple of bucks), provided you're not running the 'new' bootloader, the jig will reset your flash counter.
If you find the jig doesn't work, you have two options; flash the 'old' bootloader, or use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter.
But don't worry about that now, get your phone working, buy a jig (even if it doesn't reset your flash counter, could come in handy if you can't get into download mode someday for whatever reason) & see how it goes.
no you won't have to buy any zig to reset your binary count just root your phone and download triangle away and you are good to go .
enjoy
Okay, phone is working again with stock firmware...
Now, I already had a battery temprature problem with the phone, it didn't restart without plugging in with a charger when you would power it down... But now after restore, it keeps telling me that charging has been paused due to high voltage and the battery icon keeps flashing in the top right corner on the screen?? Should I just leave this one for the warranty then?
Seriously, you've messed with it enough, haven't you ? ;-P Send it in for warranty, add that problem to the list of other stuff you tell them about.

As Apk_Xiz, said, you're going to have to use Triangle Away to reset the flash counter if you've flashed an ICS stock firmware. Go to that thread he linked to if that's the case, read the instructions & go for it. But if you've flashed a Gingerbread stock rom, yeah, wait for the jig & reset it then send it off.

[Q] Defective NAND after 50% - any uses for it?

I have a Galaxy S3 16GB, and it seems I have been hit by the sudden death bug.
Phone got into a bootloop after 6 months of usage.
I did a KIES Firmwar recovery, and it failed at 60%.
I assume the NAND is defective there and cannot be written.
I just now tried to flash the 4.1.2 stock ROM through odin, and it fails again after flashing ca. 50% of system.img
Any idea of how this could be still remedied somehow?
eg. repartitioning to only use 8GB?

Kies stops after 60%, and Odin also stops after flashing 50% of system.img!!
It seems as if both cannot write past a defective NAND sector!!

I just now tried to flash the 4.1.2 stock ROM through odin, and it fails again after flashing ca. 50% of system.img
Any idea of how this could be still remedied somehow?
eg. repartitioning to only use 8GB?

Hey.. that happened to me on Thursday... I was updating my S3 to XXEMC2 and halfway through it failed while writing system.img After almost crapping my pants, I unplugged it, used a different version of Odin, got back to download mode and it flashed fine...

How??
Kies stops after 60%, and Odin also stops after flashing 50% of system.img!!
It seems as if both cannot write past a defective NAND sector!!

First, stay calm. When you write things like "How brah???!!! IT NOT WORKING!!!!!" it just feels like you're attacking me verbally. Which I most certainly hope you're not.
Now. Check these few steps, then report back:
Do you have all necessary drivers installed?
Is your device fully charged?
Are you using USB 2.0 or 3.0?
What operating system are you using?
When flashing via Odin: Is Kies completely shut down? (No processes must be running!)
Are you flashing a ROM which is designed for your device?
What version of Android were you using before this happened?
Do you have a custom recovery installed?
Answer these questions before you start speculating.

Yeah, Kies isn't exactly the most... precise of flashing tools. Let's put it that way

I only use KIES for backups... I can never update through it (it says my device cannot be updated with kies)... What scared me was that I was flashing with odin when it froze... that's why I almost crapped my pants...

No need. It's happened so often to me..
Sammys are pretty much un-brickable. I've seen one entire person in the XDA-forums that has managed to brick his device and that, that got me scared.
But.. nah. I've pulled the battery in the middle of a flash via Odin and recovery, I've pulled out the USB cable while flashing and nothing has ever happened.
But what I guess this guy's doing wrong is either using USB 3.0, or Kies is open in the background, where it shouldn't be. In fact, it shouldn't be anywhere on the hard drive :laugh:

Thanx for your answer.
Sure I do not want to attack you
And I am quit calm, as I have a seconds S3, that I am using right now.
It would be just a waste if the first one could not be revived.
so here the answers:
1) Yes, all drivers installed (just rooted my seconds s3 with the same odin install und computer)
2) fully charged
3) USB2
4) WinXP
5) yes, no process is left (killed kies and kiestray before)
6) yes (GT-I9300)
7) 4.1.1
8) not any more. Kies FW recovery has overwritten it with stock recovery

No worries, I'm always glad to help
Wait.. Are you German? (The 'und' gave it away.)
But in the meantime:
Ok. Looking at what you've written, try going into recovery (Stock will do, I guess) and try wiping the entire device. Cache, Data, everything it allows you to wipe.
Once you've done that, go to your computer and hit WIN+R, so that a window like this turns up:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Then you can type the command that is in the picture
Hit enter and go to 'startup' and 'services'. Once there, un-check EVERYTHING that has to do with Kies. (I mean, it's ok if you want to use it for something, but it really doesn't have to start with the computer and just make everything slower than XP already is, right?)
Then restart your computer and try flashing the device again, but this time with this version of Odin.
Once you've done all that, report back and I'll report later on (It's like 01:16 and I've got school in about 7 hours :x)
I hope I could help you and I hope this gets your device up and running again!
Indeed ... I am austrian.
Regarding wiping.
Not possible, recovery just shows "Fimware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again",
This message comes up with normal bootup, and also on recovery.
Download mode works.
I will try later on a different computer where no Samsung SW was ever installed.
But keep in mind, that
1) it flashes for a few minutes, before it allways stops at the same location (on this particular phone).
2) When the problem occured it could not mount /cache in recovery -> this was the reason why I tried to format the flash via Kies
3) This particular install of Odin has no problems with the second S3 phone!
Will report back after I tried Odin on another computer.
I am 99% sure that it will stop at exactly the same spot again
Perhaps redownload the ROM you are trying to flash? It might be a corrupt download...

Here is the confirmation.
I tried it on a completely virigin (no Samsung SW ever installed) WinXP PC.
I used your Odin archive: Odin3_v3.07_SGSIII.zip
with this official ROM:
I9300XXEMA2_I9300ATOELL1_ATO.zip
PC did not recognize the Phone, so I installed the Samsung USB drivers from the Odin thread here on XDA.
Started the flash process, and it blocks at EXACTLY the same place. (after having a bit more than 50% flashed ....

So we are back at square one ... anything that can be done if flash has a faulty cell?
yes. the motherboard can be replaced. that's the only possible solution

No, they will not.
As the device was rooted.
This is completely unrelated to the HW fault ... but enough for them to refuse to fix it.
no, not necessarily. worth a shot

Definitely!
This is why I had multiple shots with Samsung, the reseller and a consumer advocacy group.
Result was negative
again, not necessarily. it depends on where you live, but there were a couple of people with a similar problem and samsung replaced the mobo for free with a triggered counter.

Well ... I tried everything.
Consumer advocates told me that the only thing I could do was sue them ...
that I did not want to do as the risk would be very high for me as well ...

I717 revert to att stock from custom rom

I want to revert an ATT i717 rooted, with CWM ver.6, custom KK rom back to ATT stock rom (I did try KIES but it didn't recognize phone as I understand due to rom being custom.) I don't have a back up of the original stock rom. All download links I have come across are dead. Need help to locate working DL links.
2-Wifey has the same exact phone rooted with CWM ver. 6 with stock JB rom. I am wondering if I take a back up of that and flash it to my phone if that will be ok or if that's a chance for a brick?

You have posted in the development forum. Try Q&A.
Also if you can't find Odin file here, try to search google. You may find an active somewhere else. Other than that, you can wait. if I ever get off work I could probably scrounge up a copy to my dropbox.
Let me know if you find. Sorry, I won't have time until tomorrow afternoon . In middle of a work marathon on 2 jobs.

here's a link to stock jb:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8CfFE5fSiMQS1NuZVZmUnRNYVU/view?usp=sharing
it includes the rom, cwm recovery, supersu, odin, kernel, and modem.
odin the rom first, then the recovery.
copy supersu to the phone and install thru cwm.
you'll need to update binaries.
also included is the current cwm recovery i use to install kit kat roms.

Finally d/l at work, odined the rom and encountered "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue, Please select recovery mode in kies and try again"
Phone cannot enter recov. mode nor download mode. I tried kies and 2 issues came up 1 my phone has no serial number, I entered wife's S/No. (same exact phone, both made in Korea) but the second problem is that kies wants me to turn off phone, and enter d/l mode which isn't coming up.
I tried my JIG thingy but same screen comes up.
How do I fix this?
ATTN: MOD
If need be please move thread as appropriate.

Could be, really don't know for sure. Note has this screen. Anything I attempt it's resulting in the following screen below. DL mode, hit volume up and bam, same screen. Recovery, same deal, try to boot normally = same. Even a jig gets the DL mode first screen and then bam! Is there any way to fix this or Is the phone at the point of jtag repair, or worse a brick?
