ICS update is Here, which brings full native USB controller support. This means you can play games like GTA and Max Payne like they should be played, just like a console.

Is there a way to use a PS3 controller on the Sony Xperia Swithout root and without Sony's Live Dock?
I've got a PS3 controller with a cable, but I can't connect it via USB On The Go. It gives me a power consumption error.

Nope, won't work.
Added CSPortable to list. Works great with pad and HDMI, proper call of duty FPS type shooter with online multiplayer and it's free. Unofficial pc counter strike port/based by people from the Russian pda forums. I rate this game high so give it a try plus only takes up 40mb of storage
Edit : forgot to say that to enable sticks and buttons you will have to map them in the in-game controller settings first and disable gui to take on-screen controls away.

On certain games like max Payne, gta, shadowgun etc they will automatically hide but some don't and will have to change in settings. As for RR2 it has no support but if have root purchase the sixaxis app and that will allow you to map the pad to onscreen presses, so the pad will act like you touching the onscreen controls (this method applys to nearly all android games so is worth rooting just for this app). Hope this helps

There's a whole sixaxis app thread in the main xda general apps section which contains helpful info and also pre made profiles for games to make it easier plus the developer of the app has a web site with full instructions. But I must say that native pad supported games work a lot better as the games where made for controllers.

They should do. If I was you I would use Robert broglia's emulators on market as they are so much better. NES.emu, Snes9x (find it free on his web site, link on the market under description in the other emus or link is here), MD.emu (also now has Sega CD built in), 2600.emu

UPDATE WILL BE AVAILABLE SHORTLY (LIKE WITHIN THE NEXT HOUR)
Sir_earl (Sixaxis App Developer) has just released an update to his popular app Sixaxis Controller. The update brings "Native Gamepad" support over Bluetooth with the PS3 Sixaxis/Dualshock controller. This means a USB OTG setup is no longer needed to enjoy games with gamepad support such as Shadowgun and GTA III.
Gamepad Mode can be enabled by doing the following steps:
1. Purchase Sixaxis Controller from the Google Android Market. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller&hl=en
2. Configure the app to allow it to connect to your Touchpad by using the Sixaxispairtool from the developers Website. http://www.dancingpixelstudios.com/sixaxiscontroller/tool.html (This is only needed once)
3. Sync the sixaxis controller by pressing "Start" in the sixaxis controller app and pressing the Power button on the Controller.
4. If you are on ICS, press the Action button on the top right to go to the preferences Menu.
5. Select Gamepad on the top and enable it on the next screen.
6. Modify the button mappings to your liking. (Optional)
Games like Shadowgun and Riptide GP need the controls mapped in their respective settings menu.
.GTA III is ready out out of the box. Enjoy guys! Now get to emailing your favorite game developers and tell them to add native gamepad support!
List of games with full or partial gamepad support.
(Full) Shadowgun.
(Full) GTA III
(Full) Riptide GP
(Partial) Shine Runners (Can't control Menus)
(Partial) Cordy (Menus)
(Partial) Sleepy Jack (Menus)
(Partial) Reckless Racing and Reckless Getaway (Menus)
(Partial) Muffin Knight (LOLWUT)
BTW Guys this will only work on Android 3.1+. So that means this is a no go on CM7.
CM7 didn't have native support. That is where sixaxis App will help you to pair PS3 controller with touchpad. So 3.1+ is not a mandatory requirement.

By native support the OP means making Android regard the sixaxis as a normal gamepad and not as a hw keyboard.
I've been bouncing around everywhere trying to creak this nut. Figured here would be a good place to ask. Playing sky gamblers, it recognizes the gamepad and allows mapping of buttons, however some are still tied to back and menu buttons. Re mapping dosn't seem to solve this. Does anyone know of a workaround? Using galaxy note 3 and sixaxis software with ps3 controller.
Fixed: ended up re mapping controls to read as l3 and r3...works great...though if I bump sticks I fire mg or flare...lol
I can't get this to work with Milaq or Invisiblek's CM11 ROMs.
I followed the process using my phone, running CM11 and it worked flawlessly, but on the touchpad the controller just keeps blinking and never connects. Any suggestions?
Hey guys!
This is a tutorial on how/ where to download emulators, ROMs and map controllers for PSX, SNES and N64.

emus
If you want a good site for emu go to roms4droid.com many emus a bunch that are free & roms galore. Plus the community is great. Never had an issue with any of them. though i have only tried the free ones.
Emulators that I use that all work great:
Fpse (ps1)
Gameboid (gba)
N64oid (n64)
Nesoid (nes)
Snes A.D. (snes)
Most of these can be found on roms4droid.com
You need a bios file for Gameboid and Fpse which are also available at roms4droid.

I couldnt get FPSE to run for me. FCs on me everytime Played this religiously on my Atrix 2...
I pretty much use only the "Oid" emulators. I've tried a couple of different SNES ones, but SNESoid is the best. Just be sure to turn on "Core C" option or whatever it is. That will allow games like Actraiser and Mario RPG to run correctly.
I had problems with FPSE also, but it was the BIOS I was using. For some reason the copy of 1001 I had wasn't right. Someone here linked me to the copy on roms4droid and it has worked ever since. FPSE isn't without its shortcomings though... but it's the best thing available for PS1.
good thread idea... I was actually going to post the walkthroughs that I wrote up a while back.
I use N64Oid, and FPse mainly, and i forgot what NES I used to use (its not isntalled anymore). My favorite part of everything was using my PS3 controller, since it worked seemlessly with FPse, and worked very well with N64Oid.
Once again, NFC works its magic.

When I tap my phone to the controller:
1. SixAxisController app/server is launched
2. Input method prompts so that you can choose SixAxisController
3. a custom Emulators Selection menu appears, allowing you to choose FPse, N64oid, or my NES emulator. (created in Tasker)
all with a single tap Tap it again, and it closes all services, puts the input back to SwiftKey, and returns home. I <3 NFC.

FPse can be a pain in the ass.
1) open FPse, agree to save BIOS, then load the BIOS through the file browser.
2) hit back to not load an ISO, keep going back until you get to a menu.
3) choose Audio, then check SPU sync.
4) go back, choose Misc, then select "Save config as default" (something like that).
5) go back until you get the menu option to quit, then quit the app.
6) start FPse, hopefully it should ask you for an ISO, not the BIOS. try loading your FF7 ROM. It will read bin/cue just fine.
Bump, need to read up on this

TOUCH PROFIL Tutorial
Here's a simple way to create TOUCH PROFIL for Ur game do u want :good:
I hope you can understand my writing this
-> take ur game screenshot for define whrere the touch button are. (i.e. Inotia 4 for this tutorial)
-> create a new touch profile using the Sixaxis Controller app, Press Menu > Preferences > Touch Emulation > Edit Touch Profiles
-> Double tap anywhere then will show popup the touch profile menu.
-> Tap 'Change Background then select the screenshot where it save. rotate the background if that wrong.
-> first i begin to make analog touch. Press Menu > Add Button then locate the 'Analog_Left' here.
U can make analog buttons bigger to cover more touch area. tap the analog button that u created once, then drag the 'Green' ring that popsup around it outward.
To bring up a buttons properties (like sensitivity), tap on the button then Press Menu, see 'Button Properties'.
-> once completed, follow this way to make the other buttons. (this's my personal reference).
-> make sure U save Ur touch profile after U make any changes. To save the profile, double tap anywhere and then tap 'Save Profile'. i name it the same as the game for(i.e. inotia). FINISH !!!
-> back to the main screen of Sixaxis. Before U play game, pair the PS3 gamepad to Ur phone. then U should see 'Active Touch Profile'. Tap the box 'None' and change it to the touch profile U just created (inotia)
LETS PLAY.......
-> U can create a touch profile for many any game that uses touch screen controls. just take screenshot on Ur game do U want create, then follow my tutorial above
-> The touch profiles that U create and save are located at '/sdcard/data/com.dancingpixelstudios.sixaxiscontroller/profiles/'. touch profiles should have extension *.map (i.e. inotia.map)

dont have any report yet?

many ppls have experienced that.
try to repeat carefully, step-by-step.
connect ur gamepad to ur comp, see the bluetooth address, its already match or not.
next step, when u press "start" on sixaxis app, DONT press PS button (power) until show "driver starting....".
press ps button when its show "Touch emulation (type A) bla bla bla bla....".
its worked on almost every phone i had test on my friend's device (galaxy tab 7+, Xperia X8, iconia tab).
i already tested when i want connect my gamepad, i pressed ps button and "start" on the app at the same time, it not work.
take note, i realize that chance of fake/imitation PS3 controller to be working is 50%.
if u lucky, u can have cheap sixaxis pad worked on ur phone.

Hello, i bought new PS3 Dualshock for my Xperia Mini PRO, and it works perfect with GTA Vice City and GTA III, but i want play Dead trigger too, but in my sixaxis controller app isn´t gamepad function, so i can´t edit key mappings in game In Deatrigger is working only left joystick and with RIGHT joystick i can´t turn up and down, only left
Please help Thanks
changed build.prop device name to softwin looks like it did the trick, downloading asphault now, will report it it plays or not. has opened up pretty much my whole library of games and apps doing this tweak. you need a rooted device (running .510 right now).

Bc asphault 8 wasn't listed as compatible on the play store using the xperia ultras device name.
It plays fine btw. so does gangstar Vegas
i havent been in the gaming scene on android, what are some other good recommendations to try out on ZU?
What DPI is the ZU running at?
I'm thinking that 190 would be a good DPI to run at

Here's some good recommendations for you:
AirAttack HD
Anomaly Korea
Asphalt 8
Dead Space
Dead Trigger
Dungeon Hunter 4
Real Racing 3
Samurai II Vengeance
ShadowGun
All of the above titles can be either downloaded/purchased from Play store, except for Asphalt 8 (Which is not compatible with Z Ultra at the moment)
You don't really need to change build.prop device name in order to get Asphalt 8 - if you have a rooted phone.
I'm just getting Asphalt 8 to try it out, will definitely purchase it legally from Play store once it's available for Z Ultra.
If you have a dualshock3 controller & your phone is rooted, then you can purchase Sixaxis Controller app to map the buttons & use the dualshock3 controller instead.
I prefer to use dualshock3 controller because it's a hundred times easier to control, rather than using the touch screen input.
Hope the above info helps.

wrong. 320 default
you can scale it down to as much as you link but 190 is PRETYYYY tiny. I've gone as low as 240 but the UI started getting misaligned- 265 is ideal.

There are a lot of devices not supported in the playstore for this game.. But the good news is you don't need to change anything,.. just follow this video tutorial on how to download and install... as stated above, 'buy' it properly when the playstore support tree is updated with the ZU

*cough* You don't need the Sixaxis Controller app on Sony phones. They support the PS3 controller natively. You only need an OTG cable (USB On-The-Go) - which is cheap, and then you just plug the controller to the phone, and once it's connected and synced, you can unplug it and use it.
This only works for games that supports controllers, so if you need to map the buttons, you'll need the Sixaxis app. When i think about it, just ignore the whole first part of this post. I could edit it, but i've written it and i'm not throwing it away, god damn it

Yes, the Z Ultra natively supports the dualshock3 controller.
All you need to do is to connect the controller to your phone via a USB OTG adapter.
After that, you can unplug the cables & the dualshock3 controller will work wireless. You can control the phone UI using the dualshock3 controller & it also works for certain android games that supports controller input.
However, there's a misconception among people thinking that all android games will work that way.
Unfortunately, that's not the case. Majority of the android games out there are designed with touch screen input in mind - meaning that they don't support any controller input at all.
The moment you load a game that does not support controller input, you will find that you can't use the dualshock3 at all. Although it is still connected to your phone via bluetooth connection but you can't use it inside the game.
That's why you need the Sixaxis Controller app to map the game's touch buttons to your dualshock3 controller, in order to use it inside the game.
Hope the above info clear things up.
While we're at it, if you use SixAxis Controller and you don't want to spend time mapping the controls, then just go to SixAxis Of Power or this thread. But it's pretty easy to make them yourself, so if you have some questions then just ask.

I'm not sure how much research you've done on this already, so I'll cover the basics.
You will need to use either a USB OTG to connect the controller with a cable, or be rooted and use the SixAxis app to connect using the PS3 Bluetooth system.
The last time I used the SixAxis app, it wasn't compatible with Android 5.0. Check this out first before purchasing.

The other guy is right, get an OTG cable if you aren't rooted, or you can go wireless and use the SixAxis app. I use the SixAxis app(I'm rooted) and it works flawlessly on 5.0.1. If you go to Gamepad Settings and pick that you want the PS3 controller to be read as a gamepad, it even works natively with the shield tablet, the buttons are mapped on the controller as they are with the shield controller, and when you launch games, it acts like you have a shield controller setup! You can even do the hold-start-to-open-button-mapping with the PS3 controller!
Thanks you very much! Can you confirm me that all games are compatible? Or there is one that have any problem...?

All games that are compatible with the shield controller is compatible, because like I said, when you connect the PS3 controller, the system acts like you just connected an nvidia shield controller. For games that don't have gamepad compatibility, you can hold the start button to bring up an on screen button mapper and place buttons and joysticks in the locations you want.
Excelent! I will buy it

For NVidia Game Mapper, the game you are trying to set up controller maps for must at least have some sort of native controller code implemented.
For example, there are some pinball games that I tried to create a game map for using the Game Mapper. The button assignments would not work. At all.
In some ways, the NVidia Controller is limited by the Nvidia Gamepad Software. Which is a real shame, because the Shield Controller is a great piece of hardware.
If you are using SixAxis, you can set the app to treat all connected PS3 controllers as "Native Controllers".
You can also set up both a touch profile and use the native controller features already included in some games (this is referred to as "hybrid controller mode"). For example, Zen Pinball HD has basic native controller support implemented. But it doesn't have analog plunge for the ball launch. You can set up just the Right Analog Stick as a touch profile, and use the native features to control everything else.

...I provided a "long, drawn out" answer. For someone not used to SixAxis and the powerful options it offers for game mapping (hybrid mode/native controller mode) it is long, drawn out info like this that will allow folks to get the most out of the app.
I also don't feel I repeated your information. I added specific information relating to SixAxis features that your two posts didn't contain.
Sorry to bother you guys but I'm looking for a way to use a gamepad without spending 70 euros on Nvidia's right now. So to see if I got what you said before right, if I'm rooted and install SixAxis I can use a PS3 controller as if it were an Nvidia controller with the device?
Just to clarify your understanding... you DO NOT have to root the device. You only need to root it if you want to use it wirelessly. You can use a USB OTG(which is a few $/€ on amazon) without rooting your device and plug it in directly.

I have an OTG cable and I tried plugging it in this way, it works but the mapping isn't very good, for example Mimpy which is also supposed to be Tegra optimized doesn't work, I can go back and forth with the left joystick (or the arrows) but I can't use the other side of the gamepad to jump as I should. If I connect it wirelessly and use SixAxis does the mapping resemble Nvidia's own gamepad or will I still have the same issues?
