[Q] Confirming before updating - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. So i am on the Omega ROM v5.1 and wanted to confirm in regards to updating the same ROM or flashing a new ROM. After researching the site, I was able to get the information that:
1. Updating same ROM: All that is needed before installing via recovery is a cache wipe and a dalvik cache wipe right? For example updating to Omega v5.1 to v5.2.
2. Flashing different / new rom: You need to wipe cache and dalvik cache AND do a factory reset / data wipe.
Please let me know if I am correct in both 1. and 2. situations. Thank in advance for all your input!!

yes you are right that is what iv always done unless del recommends a full wipe . updating on omega you should be ok just wiping dalvik cache and battery stats iv always done it like that unless changing roms then wipdata factory reset is used as well good luck

If I wan't to have a really clean system I install new stock rom and make the factory reset by code. Everything is cleared after this

do a factory reset, clean cache partition, clean dalvik cache, format cache data system and sd card in cwm recovery. but do a backup first with titanium backup.
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe Dalvik-cache
done!
You will also need to flash a stock Kernel if you are using a custom one.
Also if it is for warranty purposes make sure you flash a stock firmware too. They can all be found with a quick search.

Yiiikes

Omg omg omg.. pleeeease someone help me.. I tired flashing a rom (phone already rooted and using cwm 5) for the fifth time and it's now stuck in startup on android (in white letters). I wiped system cache dalvik but nothing... what else could I try?
Which ROM are you using?
Try flashing again, and remember to read the instructions very carefully.
Wipe data/factory reset, wipe the cache (although that should be done when you factory reset) and the dalvik cache.
If it still fails, restore your previous backup (you did make one right? It's, like, almost necessary to backup your current ROM with CWM before doing anything, even if it's just wiping the dalvik cache. It's ESPECIALLY necessary to do one before flashing a ROM).
If all else fails, flash a new firmware using ODIN.
Thanks for the quick reply but I managed to fix it already.. I am awesome *big smiles*
You are awesome. Great job.

[Q] Rom flashing

can i flash the new version of a rom that im using without wipe the phone? im currently using neutrino 2.6 and i'd like to update it to the 2.7 without having to wipe the phone. can i do it without damaging the phone?
Wipe Cache and Dalvic Cache and you should be fine. The only time a factory reset is required is when you are changing ROMs or after a big update.
If you haven't done any more roms, thats fine. If you have switched/updated roms 3-4 times, it would be a good idea to wipe everything.

I think i flashed Omega right because it's no Wipe????

Hey guys, i have flashed for the first time EVER a custom rom on my S3 Omega V13.1,i was on stock rom BLG8,and i wiped only dalvik cache and cache partition and preloaded cache before install with aroma which cool.
The thing is i've noticed no lags i tried calls,Wifi all the things works perfectly all my apps and games stood the way they were i havent lost anything of my data.iS THIS NORMAL since i flashed this custom rom over a stock one??
Ps: i'm rooted and i'm on SiyahKernel 1.5.2
Problems equal wipe no problems equal wipe not needed .
jje
Thanks man!!
It's normal, cause you didn't wipe data / factory reset in recovery. Although you don't notice any problems wiping data is recommended if you come from another rom than Omega

Flashing a custom rom question

Hi yesterday I flashed the stock 4.1.2 update to my rooted s3 and I had expected to lose all my data and apps so I backed everything up with titanium ready to restore it after the update, surprisingly I didn't lose anything after flashing.
I was just wondering if I was to flash cyanogenmod 4.1.2 would I lose all data and apps this time?
Thanks

No - all your data/apps will stay unless you do a full wipe/factory reset in recovery.

The data will remain, but it is a granted prerequisite to flashing that one must do a factory reset before flashing a new rom. Note: this applies only for a new rom altogether, not updates to the same one!

If I helped you, please hit the thanks button!
You won't lose your apps/data unless you do a wipedata/factory reset . Also some roms pre-request a full wipe in order to the rom to boot .
Wipe may be asked for by the rom maker to avoid conflicts and stop users posting my app stopped this rom working .
Rom may be a wipe rom but not usually .
Personally i never full wipe unless problems but do wipe cache dalvik and system only before any instal .

So technically should I be able to flash cyanogenmod without doing anything but wipe cache and davlik cache?
Thanks again for the help

yes, you should be able to.
if you encounter any problems then a full wipe is recommended.
I'd back up your apps/data just in case.
