Used by android. Android needs ram allocated to it to perform.

It also depends on the kernel, rom and apps you use.

its normal...here's mine

So our phone has 512 mb ram.
in CM it is reported as 420mb, means that the 92MB is system reserved. The 130 mb reported is quite high because of your apps, GO launcher Ex already taking up 31mb.....in kernel it usually just affects the distribution of ram (killing apps etc).
Actually is better to go to settings>about phone>scroll down to meminfo, it's more accurate.

GO Launcher is heavy, I think, (and many others too). If you want a different kind of launcher, try SS Launcher. or the Xperia S Launcher.

92MB RAM system only
420MB user
Edit: the same is for all 512MB RAM devices

The Android OS itself needs some RAM for vital phone functions, SMS functions, etc. and the video card (PowerVR SGX 540) needs some dedicated memory. But how much RAM do you really need? Do you multitask 10 apps at a time?

Like was mentioned. The lack of 512 "max" memory is because of the dedicated memory for video, just like any other motherboard with onboard video.

Why?
what good does unused ram do you?
Unused ram is what it is, unused and wasted ram. Google will optimize the OS for our hummingbirds as the Nexus s uses the same SoC, so our phones will be up to date for at least a year. Android is efficient with RAM management so don't worry, you will rarely run out of RAM. Even the original Droid with only 256 mb ram rarely had issues.

[Q] How can I get More RAM?

Just wanted to know if there was a way to increase my Free RAM on this device. Some ROM's I have run have about 150megs free while others have less, the current ROM I running has 200megs free. Other than killing a running app or task, is there a way to free up more? Or is this just how this device works?

I've tried lots of roms and none had more free ram than UR Rom. But it does take more time to set up than other roms because its light, which is great IMO. O wish it had 2gb of ram like the S3. If it did it would be perfect. By the way I hate the s3.

If your running sense and dont mind disabling sense aspects of your rom, you can freeze sense and run another launcher like ADW. When i was running the older viper i did see on average another 100 megs of ram open.
Or you could go aosp and win right there just saying

UR is the rom I running now. I would like to keep sense, I understand that freezing/removing will lighten it up. So until CM is fully functioning, I want to try to make the most of what I have.
I'll probably add swap when I get around to playing with the kernel in the mean time if u have tasker u can set up a profile to bulletproof apps, I was pissed when dolphin closed while watching hulu on the EVO LTE, it has 2x the ram of my og EVO but less avaible for me to use
Tasker profile active when dolphin running in foreground:

[Q] [Suggestion]How to get more free RAM

I am using Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray from last 4 month. I already upgrade my phone ICS, Root it, Install CWM recovery etc.
But my phone is a little bit laggy, work laggy. I know if i got more free RAM, with it my phone's performance increase.
Any idea to increase phone performance with more free RAM.
i attached a screenshot of current RAM usage.
Thanks in Advance.
I don't want to use Custom ROM/Kernel, Unlock my Bootloader

You could use auto memory manager from the playstore
Or use some init.d scripts or use a custom Rom or custom kernel which claims to have more free ram.
p.s: for custom kernel you need to unlock your bootloader.

that 109mb free is already reasonable high free ram.
theres a saying that free ram is wasted ram.
Hmmmm...since you have rooted your phone, i suggest you install System Cleanup.....this apps can remove any bloatware on stock rom and free more ram that have been use by bloatware.....this apps also will show you which apps is safe to remove from your system files.....
I agree with anonymous . Free ram is wasted ram. But some apps (games) Might require certain amount of free ram so you can use app killers (pretty hard on battery, not recommended) or apps like auto memory manager (recommended, but keep the threshold limit reasonable).

I'm running cm10, multitasking with tapatalk, music player, seeismic and opera mobile gave me just around 60mb free ram but no significant lag that i can see. Guess it depends on rom/kernel too for better memory management, and stock or stock based rom is lousy at that. On miui ics based on stock i cant play dead trigger without swap, wont even open the game but on cm9/cm10 i can play smoothly without needing swap.
Actually i need a Lag free phone. More free RAM is not primary reason....
Then use custom rom that aren't based on stock eg cm, pa or aokp. But for that u need to flash custom kernel, and to flash custom kernel u need to unlock bootloader.

RAM Management

As you know, Android integrated a Memory Management Mechanism that allow system to kill some apps to free RAM for those RAM-tiger apps like games and browsers.
That's good, but it's quite annoying sometimes, when I quit a game or browser the home launcher always take several seconds to reload icons and widgets.
I hope Launcher,Contacts,Phone,SMS these frequently-used apps can be LOCKED INTO RAM so it can starts quickly when I need it.
So I'm looking for some app can Lock app into RAM, but I've found nothing I want.
Then I remembered there is a Memory Management function in DX Toolbox might be useful more or less.
There is 4 settings in DX Toolbox:
first is system default setting(can not be changed), and the other 3 are DX Toolbox's 3 different settings:

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
There is only 19+29+24+37+49+43=201mb RAM of the system default setting:
but there is 227+113=340mb RAM in total of my ROM:
So I modified one of the settings like this, 30+30+65+65+70+80=340mb:
Then I just wanna know am I correct.....?
And how should I set these values.....?

Pim My Rom can lock apps in the memory - but I don't think it's that useful because Ray only has 512mb.
The latest CM10 build is very fast - so much so that I don't really think such tweaks are really necessary.
Ultimately the Ray is not a power user phone, I'm amazed what the developers here have managed to do, but it's limited by its hardware and can only be taken so far.
Nothing will work for it since xperia ray only have 400mb ram "why you guys say 512mb? check by your self thats a sony lie sometimes we have only 358mb" the only thing xperia ray users can do for ram is use some apps who can help the only one's i found are:
Ram Manager Pro
Speed booster
Ram booster pro
Those one's are the only hope to get a... decent ram management

[Q] Which app shows real free RAM?

Hello. I own a Xoom 2 MZ616. I wish a widget or a permanent icon in status bar that shows me real RAM available. At the moment i have 3 different sources : Settings ->Apps->Running , LMT Launcher ( along pie ) and Memory Status.
The problem is each of them show me way too different number such : Settings shows me 218MB free, LMT Launcher shows 11MB free and Memory Status indicates 72MB free.
Which one should i consider real one?
Thanks alot.
Consider in settings because it's a system app and also it's knows better your device ram than any third party app

Settings is the worst because it hides a Lotta processes in the calculation. Even the cache won't show up directly.

rather difficult indeed for the applications in accordance with the actual conditions of the memory android, but it's worth a try one by one before deciding to use it for a long time.
If u want to know your free ram, no need to use app just type 'free' in terminal emulator.
