So far here are the options for VOIP on the YP-G70:
Groove IP + Google Voice- Which is what I've tried so far. Voice quality is kind of poor.
sipdroid or csipsimple + Google Voice + PBXes.com - Apparently this has better voice quality?
Talkatone (Iphone equivalent to Groove IP) currently being ported to Android - Alpha 3
Skype - but I read somewhere you can't use Skype over wifi??? Maybe the person who posted that didn't know what they were talking about???
Any thoughts, opinions, ideas on How to or what software works best would be appreciated.
But what I'm really having a difficult time with is security. Using a wifi phone in a public hotspot has obvious security issues so you need a VPN. But just as important is using Google Voice without a VPN. It's basically the same thing as CarrierIQ - Google is tracking everything you do and also tracking WHERE you log in from. So a VPN is a must. To make matters even more difficult if you do get a VPN you have no idea whether the VPN provider is tracking you or might steal your login info from every site you log into via the VPN.
I've been researching this VPN thing for weeks and still don't have a good solution. So if anyone out there has any advice it would be GREATLY appreciated!!
I use GrooveIP (not much, but works fine). I have secure wifi at home and work, so not concerned about security. Talkatone could be good once fully ported, too many ui issues for me, seems restrictive.
I also use grove ip and found it works pretty well once you get the settings just right. I had to turn up the microphone gain several clicks and checked the echo control option in the debug or trouble shooting menu.
I use csipsimple rather than sipdroid, as I found the former integrates better with the stock rom. Actually, sipdroid doesn't seem to have a dialer and depends on dialer.apk which is just a dud application in stock rom. Pbxes-gv works fine. Voice quality is better than my G2 on Wind. Wifi needs to be on to stay registered. My battery life is several days standby with wifi off, but drops to about 6 hours with it on and about 40 minutes of calls.
With my spa-3102 I have an easy bridge to landline, so you could do it that way instead. This requires pbx server and a decent amount of config to get working, but csipsimple-pbxes-gv is a perfect standalone solution!

Skype works very well on my YP-G70. Since I have subscribed to a Skype online number, I can place/receive calls just like a regular phone.
Going to have to try Skype.
The lag is so bad on Groove IP / Google Voice that I end up talking over the top of the other person all of the time. Plus you can't do MMS on GV. And the GV SMS Android app is pretty limited - shows the data of a text message but not the time. And you can't use Google's video chat - we've got the dual camera's would be nice to use them - or at least try them out.
We'll see if Skype does any better.

You might have a bad internet connection. Google Voice has worked perfectly for me the past few weeks, no lag (once settings for lag were adjusted) and each call is very smooth. Your right about GV having no MMS, which is sad that that doesn't exist. And it shows the date AND time of the texts for me, not too sure why your not able to see that.
And as for the dual cameras... I don't know if you knew this, but from what I've read- The front camera ONLY takes VGA pictures, no video recording possible (so no video chat? I hope I'm wrong).
I've used my GP5 with Skype for video chat, and the girlfriend said the quality was better than my laptop's camera... so I can confirm that the front camera does indeed support video.
The perfect solution if you got a SIP account, is CSipSimple. It's working great whenever you can connect to Wifi. I even used it to call for free when I was abroad.
stock sip for gb
im sure gingerbread supports sip natively its just a matter of copying some files/framework and enabling it from the rom just like in galaxy note with gingerbread of course. the problem seems to be that sgp 5.0 doesnt attract much devs unlike other popular devices im also interested in this feature

It's odd, on my 4.0, the earpiece doesn't work with the latest version of Skype. I cover the proximity sensor and it turns the screen off but continues sending sound through the speakers. I have found if I use several versions older, it works, and if I use a moded version from xda, and enable an option, it works.

Who told you that? I've used it for almost a year on my player. You can't call from within the app, but of course the OP already said that. And the answers here are the same as the other thread (which I answered first). The OP is correct.

I installed Google Voice through the Play store on my YP-G70 and I use it by itself for texting and use it with Talkatone for VOIP calling with no problems at all. I can't figure out how to pair my Bluetooth headset but that is a completely separate issue...

It's most likely your internet connection. GrooveIP mostly lags when an internet connection is slow or not strong, and also call quality depends on that as well. For me I have a very strong connection at home and it never lags and call quality is pretty good. Now at college since wifi is spotty it doesn't lag but call quality is a bit worse.
Remember with Skype to call a mobile/landline number you have to purchase minutes. I bought the $35 a year plan, and it works fine but you still can't text people because it uses your skype credit. Also if you want people to be able to call the player or answer calls through skype you wiill have to buy a "skype number" and that cost an additional $60. I didn't get the number, but I used a workaround. What I did was register for textplus (you can still use a google voice number but still have to have Google Voice installed) and they give you a number for free. Then I went to skype and set my caller id to the textplus/google voice number so that it'll ring the player through textplus/grooveiP and give people a number to call. Problem is you can't pick up using skype and will have to wait to call them back afterwards lol.
To me GrooveIP/ Google voice is the best option for our place. I tried talkatone but the free version's quality is worse than grooveIPs and you have to pay to unlock higher quality. I haven't tried to other one. I hope this helps.

I have the rezound, as well as a Kindle Fire, and I installed Google Voice on them. I read through other threads, and no luck with my problem.
I have used Google Voice on my computer to call and text people, and with my upcoming trip to europe, it would be nice to use that to call people back home.
Problem, I have it installed on two devices, yet on both it doesn't give me the option to call, or even compose any sort of message at all. Any ideas on what I can do? The only options I get are refresh, settings, and search.
For me, when I'm in my inbox (or any other folder) I have a compose button on the bottom left. For calls, can you go into settings, Making calls, and change it to ask for all calls? Then use your dialer to place a call and it should prompt you.

click settings. the second option in the settings menu controls the ability to make calls via google voice. it is however done by dialing a forwarding service and therefore uses your minutes. it is not voip.

I pretty much use Google Voice as my primary mode of voice calling. You don't make a call through the app. Simply go to settings, and tell it to either use GV for every call, or ask it to prompt you at every call whether to call from your phone or to call from GV. Then when you simply dial as normal through the dialer app, it will either just use GV if you told it to, or ask you which to use.
BTW, All GV calling functionality is disabled on wifi tablets. I honestly have no experience with 3G/4G tablets, but on my Wifi Transformers I have to install a SIP client on the tablet and route GV calls to another VOIP service I use.

I'm a bit confused. I thought the only Google Voice calling solution was GrooveIP if you want to send and receive calls properly for your Google Voice phone number. GrooveIP does not use your minutes and is definitely VOIP.
On every device I tried it on, there is a bit of delay with GrooveIP, but the quality is good (good internet connection required, whether its 4G or strong 3G or WiFi.)
Can you please elaborate a bit? Are you just using Google Voice app, but its using your minutes?

When you use the google voice app, it dials into the google voice services which then forwards the call to the number you dialed. You get charged for the minutes during the call as a result. This also breaks free mobile to mobile calling.
GrooveIP is a 3rd party app that lets you connect to GV via VOIP so you don't have that forwarding call.
Use sipdroid with pbxs function. Tie it to Google voice, download Google voice callback, and presto. Have it on an old evo for my 8 year old daughter. She loves texting with Google voice. Makes her feel like a teenager. There is sometimes a slight echo, but completely usable.

This is exactly how I made voice calling possible with my GV number on my wifi tablet.
Reprimand me if this has been addressed already and my stupid ass couldn't find it.
I live in an area with no 3G coverage at all. EDGE will suffice for simple things such as sms/mms, phone calls (obviously), and web browsing with Opera Mini.
At my house, we have wifi and my phone is always connected to it and signal strength is always excellent. Since I live in the woods, I get no more than 2 or 3 bars of cell service at any given time, if I'm lucky. One or two is the norm.
Can I make calls over Wifi? Or sent text/picture messages? Perhaps I simply don't understand how it works, but a large percentage of the time when I try to reply to a text, it fails and I have to send it repeatedly. Or if someone sends me a picture of some sort. Takes forever to download, if it works at all. Making a phone call is an exercise in futility. Perhaps it has to be done a certain way.
I'm running the latest version of ShoStock2 at the moment, but these problems happen with AOKP, CM9, and Phone Bricker, amongst others.
I'm sure there's apps that allow you to do that. First Google result shows Talkatone. Idk if there's other similar ones/better ones, but you can start there.
As for text, I'm sure there's an app for that too
I used textfree on my iPod. Can't recall if I couldn't send or receive pics though.
For calls, to my understanding, naturally. No. I'd say get something like Skype where you can do VoIP and do all your calls from there on WiFi, as for texts and MMS you really shouldn't have any problems. as far as I'm concerned, texts should be fine, and mms should download via wifi if you are connected. But if it continues to be a problem you could always get Textfree or Whatsapp and get your friends in on that. Its platform wide (literally) and is supported on every device i can think of.
Hit thanks if I've helped you.
Hope you figure out this issue!
You could use text free for texts you just couldn't use your own number or Google voice of course for text and calls. But you can't route your actual cell phone calls and texts over wifi. T-Mobile has that capability but not us on at&t.

Voice calls? YES
SMS? YES
MMS? NO
I thought that Google voice was supposed to start supporting MMS, but not sure when. I have been waiting for a while. I use Groove ip as well.
Whats difference between SMS and MMS? A friend and I are 7 days late and our phones are off.
I had viber but got rid of it cause i wasn't using it. (maybe redownload?)
Also my google voice doesn't let me make calls or send messages? (it says I can do international calls - but I turned it off cause it said I needed money in a "google account" sigh...)
I can still use wifi at my house, but thats about it.

erm, maybe you can try viber? It has this feature though(although I've never used it)
Google Voice is free for calls in the US and possibly Canada IIRC. If you set up your Google voice number to not forward calls, and use the GrooveIP app. The Lite version will work fine for wifi only, but if you want to use 3G or find the app useful and want to support the dev while getting extra features, get the paid version.
Can you call numbers too or do you have to have the contacts themselves like skype?
Google voice is NOT a VOIP service, just a call forwarding service. You might want to give this thread a look.
:Edit: I didn't read spunker88's reply thoroughly enough. The thread I mentioned has a lot of information about setting up VOIP as he recommends.

Yes, you can call any US number, landlines or cell phones using GrooveIP which uses your Google Voice account. The app itself is done pretty well, it acts as a dialer and allows you to dial your phone's contacts through it.
Just be aware that this with this setup you'll have a separate phone number and you'll have to leave GrooveIP running while connected to wifi in order to receive calls.
OK, I received the Mate 2 yesterday and am trying a data plan and Google Hangouts w/ dialer. Works well. I paired bluetooth to my car. Now here is the question: Is there any way to get the bluetooth commands to go to Hangouts dialer versus the phone dialer? I was able to speak fine but have to manually dial and hang up. Probably not, but I would like to be pleasantly surprised.

I see the question now. No I don't think you can initiate a call via Bluetooth in hangouts but on mine I can end a call and answer via a button on my steering wheel or also on my plantronics bluetooth headset.

time is money is data. Do you honestly think you had to point that out and that I didn't know the difference?
What I am wondering is why the bluetooth will interface with the regular dialer and not the hangups dialer and if there is a way to point it to the hangups dialer.

I've tried a few things that don't work. Another thing I found out that doesn't work is sending a text from my gwatch. I can respond to texts and hangouts messages from my watch, hangouts is my default texting app, but if I try to send a text, it says it sends but doesn't. Nor does using Google now to send a message. It says no texting app installed. Very confused. Not sure if it's a problem with the phone, the watch, hangouts, Google now. I'll play with it more when I find the time.

If the person on the other end of the call hung up, the call would end.
I've noticed that the proximity sensor doesn't respond in the hangouts dialer like it does in the stock dialer (ie making a call with the phone, finish call, take phone away from ear, screen automatically turns on and shows current call). Hangouts dialer is still pretty new, many minor things can be improved.
Also, the "voice dialer" app that comes stock on the Huawei Ascend Mate2 is only going to work with the stock dialer. I don't know if that is what you are trying to get to work with the hangouts dialer. If you are, it won't work.

The call I made where it didn't hand up was directed to voice mail on their end. Bluetooth "end call" didn't break the connection and it never hung up - It was several minutes later that I noticed it and it showed a connection still.
Yes, I agree that there probably will be improvements made to the hangouts dialer as time goes on. Maybe Googe will do a voice dialer add on. Or maybe a 3rd party voice dialer for hangups will appear.
I also have noticed odd behavior in the hangups app. Sometimes when I dial the person answers and yet it keeps on ringing on my end (called my wife while she was standing next to me).
