Hey all,
I'm having a problem with messaging apps not pulling contact photos and occasionally names tied to phone numbers for threads. I originally had this problem with GOSMS, then after toying with it for a while without any luck, I switched back to Handcent and have the same issue.
All contact photos and names pull to the stock messaging app. Handcent and GO both will pull photos that have been manually set, but not those from Twitter/Facebook/ect. Message threads will also occasionally appear as only the phone number until the phone is restarted. The phone is not rooted and occurs both in Sense and GoLauncher.
Kind of a strange issue. I had my fingers crossed that someone else had a similar issue but I couldn't find a related thread-- please link if I missed it. Thanks.
Here you go. Must be rooted for this app to work

Thank you! Is there a certain reason I've got to do the work around for this phone when it worked on the original EVO 4G?
I believe lots of people have been having problems with other messaging programs. I've had the same issues that you've had.

Facebook and google are pissed at each.other so we suffer. Facebook pulls.data from google but doesn't like to share their data, so google and Facebook started blocking.each other in little ways.
Either way we as consumers suffer

At first i thought it was just swype, since that always acts up. Ever since I've had the phone anytime a picture is present in an sms thread, it makes the app go bonkers. It either freezes up, the keyboard flashes at epilepsy inducing speeds or the "soft" menu buttons that pop up flash as well.
I could normally make the problem go away by deleting the picture/media out of the thread manually by selection. Now it does it sometimes without any media being present. Basically if a picture is present, it either refuses to let me type or does so at turtle speeds.
I emailed HTC days after receiving the phone, but the help ticket went down the road of them trying to help me with my frustration of not being able to download .mpo files through the native gmail app, only preview.
I also took it to the sprint store where of course the phone magically started functioning properly when I tried recreating the problem for the tech (yay?), it only took a few tries to recreate the glitch, where she just did a wipe of the phone (don't remember if she did it through the recovery mode or "regular" wipe). But I shouldn't have to wipe my phone every time the stock messaging app starts acting up.
Ill try to get video of it happening tomorrow, it's 3:30am right now... Kinda late to be borrowing anyones phone for such things
Tl:dr stock messaging app acts wonky when media is present in thread
Is anyone else having this issue?
I think no one here uses stock sms app anymore. Gosms and Handcent are great replacements. Plus on gosms you can text from anyscreen, if your in the browser, your sms will pop up and you can reply from their without switching apps. Its very useful, give it a try.
I Haz 3D!
I use the stock SMS app. I like having the integration the stock SMS app has with the home screen and address book. Anyway I haven't had any of those issues the OP is having with the stock sms app. If it happens again try clearing the data for the sms app, that won't clear out your text messages.
Just tried it, data was only about 864kb anyway, problem persists. I dont have a ton of threads/messages in there clogging it up.
And I know about chomp and handcent, ive used them both. I honestly do like a lot of stock apps though, it's not from ignorance... I had a cm7 evo 4g.

I use stock without issue as well. I prefer it now over those apps. For popups I just use SMS Pop-up from the market. Problem solved.
Are We Not Phones?
We Are D3VO!
Are we not phones?!
3.DeE.V.O.!!
i too use the stock app. No issues at all here.
Im wondering if I should temp root and backup all my crap. Dont feel like individually downloading all these apps again if I take it to the store and all they do is wipe it again... If it comes to that and the issue persists, hopefully they swap it out.
My just puts all kinds of weird times on the messages like it'll be 1pm but the time stamp will be 6

Same here. And I'm not roaming. And also if I reply within the same minute the text came in my text goes above theirs in the thread, so it looks like I'm replying before they even send the text which obviously isn't the case... But regardless, I do love the stock app.
Anyone know why?
I just downloaded it yesterday.. I just checked the market you rite not there

That's strange...
It is still in the market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms&hl=en
But it says it is incompatible with the Evo 4G and 3D. IDK about other phones. Maybe this was a mistake on their part?
Hopefully its some sort of maintenance or maybe some other big application purchased them. there should be word on it at some point
I know version 4.0 was supposed to come out soon.
Maybe they're renaming the app?
Just found this out too. Just flashed a new ROM and it wasn't listed. All the font/language packs are there, just not the app. Got an SGS2. I see it's in a couple other markets, but not the Android Market. Going to give Go SMS a whirl. Saw a few threads asking which is better and overwhelming response was Go SMS.
I noticed this earlier this evening... Hows Go SMS workin out for ya?
ive been using go sms for about a month and like it better than handcent, seems faster to me.
Think Ill give it a go and see how i like it...
You can always grab it from the dev's website.

Ive used Go SMS since 3vo came out and i love it... when it was unlocked, i have been flashing every week and love how GOSMS has an SMS backup feature
My biggest problem is when Im in the Gallery and want to attach a picture to a text, when I hit share, it rarely allows me to go to the stock messaging app. I vaguely remember that I could do that every time with Handcent... Does Go SMS show up when you click share on a picture?

GOsms is a lot better, I used to use handcent until I was shown GOsms, it's a lot better in my opinion.
I prefer Handcent because of the privacy features. I haven't found another app that offers the breadth of their privacy services.
Maybe it was removed due to some of the voicemail issues they were having. A friend of mine used to always complain that people would bring their phones in complaining about visual voicemail and it was always due to the Handcent app.
This is the email I got back from them this morning
"sorry, this is a temp issue ,we are contacting google ,it may fix in 3 days, now ,you can download from www.handcent.com temp, hope we can get response from google ASAP"

I've been using GO SMS & Launcher for over 6months. 1st on my EVO now on 3D. I love it.
Eh, I tried both, I still love hand cent much more.
I have handcent
I couldn't find Handcent on the market either so I used a backup I had on my SD card with Titanium Backup and it works perfectly...
I recommended the EVO 3d to a colleague at work and he is now having issues opening text messages from his other half he has over 6123 on the device from here and when you try to open the thread it just says "loading" constantly
is this due to him having to many messsages from her?
HELP PLEASE HE WAS AN iSpac CONVERT AND NOW HE IS THREATING OVER GOING BACK!!

over 6000 messages with one person? Yeah, I'd bet that was the problem...
Try having him download another SMS app such as handcent or gosms and see if they can open the thread.
Thanks Freeza!! resolved the issue (is it only the HTC messaging app that struggles like this?) i personally used GOsms on my DHD before moving over to my EVO3D

After a certain amount of texts the stock messaging app for every ROM loads forever or crashes when trying to open. I use Handcent and it always works. 10000+ texts.
私のEVO 3Dから送信される。
I'm the exact opposite. I have over 5000 messages with one person and stock messaging app is fine for me. It's my 3rd party messaging app thats breaking. Good luck though!

I had the same issue, kind of. I couldn't send a specific person any texts. The word "Loading" would pop up and nothing else would happen. I had to delete the contact and create it all over again.
For good sake, delete some messages. I mean, what, are they legal briefs? I used to always beck up Mt messages before flashing a new ROM. I finally realized, who the hell needs to keep texts (unless they're legal based). I don't bother anymore. But I realize that's nit the best solution for someone new to Android who things o'er may be better

SMS Backup & Restore app followed by Message Cleanup app.
Copy your restore file to your computer and relive those great moments on a large screen.
Hi Everyone,
Finally switched my my original HTC EVO to Samsung Galaxy S3 on sprint. Have been really disappointed so far and hoping you can help. I have always used SMS Backup+ by Jan Berkel from the Play store when restoring text messaging back to the EVO, whether I broke or lost a unit. I restored the 13K in messages to my new S3 and I have had continuous problems with the messaging app. It either doesnt load at all, take 10-15 seconds to send each message, or provides a popup stating that sms need to be forced closed. I restored my wifes 12K in SMS to her new HTC EVO 4G LTE and it has worked flawlessly. Any ideas as to the cause?
Also, I could not sync my phone to any of my pc's at home as it would not load drivers. After spending 20 minutes with Samsung Advanced tech support their only advice was to do a factory reset, wth??? The factory reset, as suggested by other posts, fixed the syncing/USB driver issues. It also fixed the SMS issues but I am wondering if that is because I just have restored my old messages yet.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Well, there's no reason to have 12000 messages on a phone, but if you insist...
What about other messaging apps? Could be Samsung's just doesn't handle huge threads very well.

Yea I guess I don't need them all, just bothersome that a 2.5 year old phone with a slower processor handles them without ease and that my wifes had no problem with the restore.
Do you think the factory reset might have fixed it all, should I try to restore my texts and see?
Honestly I use mybackup pro that one lets me back up texts up to 12k is my highest that I had just to see if it could do it. it backs up SMS, MMS or both. It does a good job for me. I've used it continually since I had a problem with SMS backup+. Try it out.

I bet it has something to do with differences within the HTC and Samsung messaging apps.

Samsung and HTC are very different when it comes to software so it could be that your EVO messages simply aren't compatible with samsung but why would you even want them on your phone?? just put them on your PC and if you ever need the texts you'll have them there. I think this belongs in the questions forum so watch out cuz your in big trouble!
This belongs in Q&A not A&D close this thread and move

I've been using the default messaging app with my v60 and I actually love it. Up until a few days ago rcs was working perfectly with it and then it just stopped working. For some reason RCS has never worked in the stock app for my wife and I ever since we switched to TMobile. It works in Google messages, but never the stock app. And after today's announcement that T-Mobile was rolling out universal profile, I tried it again and it still doesn't work

That is strange. Although, I'm having a weird problem where mms doesn't even work at all on the stock app, but it works fine on Google messages or any other 3rd party apps. Which sucks because I like the stock app but I can't use it since I can't send or receive pics or group messages. T-Mobile literally had to open a trouble ticket in my account and are trying to figure it out

Maybe it has something to do with TMobile agreement with Google regarding RCS.

I would have thought that could be it, and maybe it is, but I've had the phone for well over a month and it hasn't worked from day one. Supposedly T-Mobile is going to contact me on Tuesday after the "engineer's look at the provisioning" on my account
Aaaaaand just like that, RCS is working again for me in stock messaging app wtf?
