Anyone have a good compilation of Galaxy player info.? I'm wondering about a few things.
1: How well does it root?
2: Can it go to ICS?
3: Any particular cons to the model?
4: How good is the screen, 4.0 vs. 5.0
5: Can it be soft rooted a la B&N Nook.
Regards,
Mike

I managed to root it very easily using SuperOneClick. However I was running stock 2.2.2, but it appears there are a few issues rooting 2.3.6 roms
Yes it can go to ICS and there are many CM9 and AOKP based roms in the dev section
The only real cons I can see are no official ICS from samsung and as the galaxy players are not too popular, there is less dev work for them compared to other devices
I think the screen on the 4.0 is slightly better as it has the same resolution, but a smaller screen so more dpi. It is also a SuperClear LCD vs a TFT screen on the 5.0
I'm not too sure what soft rooting is (just googled it quickly), but full root is available
I suggest you visit this thread for more info.

Thanks for the info., I'm surprised the Galaxy isn't a more popular device.
Have any other potentials suggestions for a 5 inch Android device?
Regards,
Mike
the sgp 5.0 has more devs working on it than the 4.0.
but I don't get the point of choosing the 5.0 over the 4.0 or a real smartphone like for instance the galaxy ace, except the bigger screen.
-pixel density is lower
-yamaha DAC
The reason why I choose the SGP 4.0 over a new smartphone (200€ were my max budget), was the Wolfson DAC. Music quality is very good.
Of course you should use high quality mp3 or flac and good ear/head phones.
I have HTC with 4 inch screen and this player with 5.0 and like much more bigger screen..i use player more then htc...htc is just for making calls and sms and to make mobile hotspot if in that place there is no wifi.
800x480 on 5 inch is still better resolution then any 10.1 android tablet on the market

I'm actually wanting to use it as a nice little tablet for browsing ect. Yeah the DAC would be nice, but it's not that important for my application. I'm assuming the Yamaha DAC is decent. Are there any measurements or reviews showing the difference in quality between the Yammy and Wolfson?
Can an Android cellphone be used without SIM if unlocked?

For #5: Maybe soft root is the wrong term. For Nook, it's possible to install the ROM onto the SDCard as opposed to the internal memory, making it possible to dual boot and not overwrite the internal ROM. I think there's still some level of root CWM needs to be installed.
Here is info on MultiBoot

1: How well does it root?
I got mine rooted using an older version of super oneclick on the stock rom which is 2.3.5
2: Can it go to ICS?
I prefer not to. Way to many bugs if you are going to put on a different rom.
3: Any particular cons to the model?
I have the 5 inch and the only con I have with it is that you really can't use your external sd card to put apps on it.
4: How good is the screen, 4.0 vs. 5.0
I like the 5 inch screen. It is very clear and very bright.
5: Can it be soft rooted a la B&N Nook.
This question is unclear to me. Rooting is software based. All what you are doing is making yourself an administrator. Allmost like changing a standard account on a Windows pc to an administrator.
I would recommend installing GenericGinger ROM and Entropy512's (I believe that's how you spell his name) kernal. Quicker charge rate and overclocks the cpu to 1.2 GHz. You would destroy the retarted Apple devices to the grave they deserve.

Whats the chance of getting CM7 on the SGS2?
Is the SGS a fully supported CM7 phone?
I'm a HTC man myself (DHD atm), but the SGS2 is looking mildly tempting due to the AMOLED screen, loud speaker and great .mkv playback capabilities as I watch quite a bit of video.
I am leaning more towards the Sensation due to the 16:9 qHD screen and the fact I've never been let down by a HTC device yet.
But I've really got used to CM7. Whilst I'm sure the Sensation will get CM7 on it... at some point, I reckon the SGS2 will get it first.
It's a big hmmmmmmmm from me atm
Very doubtfull you will see any custom roms on HTC now mate because there locking bootloaders
The device hasn't even been rooted yet but I'd say it's only a matter of time. If it's a deciding factor for you then hang fire but I'm actually quite liking touchwiz 4 and that's something I never thought I'd say.

Samsung is very good about releasing source, just check http://opensource.samsung.com they will post the source within a few weeks I'm sure.
sorry to ask this noob question, but why do you need cm7 on this phone? is it laggy? lacking features ?

Because this forum is for developers and development of ROMs, otherwise why would you be on this forum
some people want root regardless as they like to tinker.
also enables useful features like
titanium backup / Clock recovery so you can easily backup/clone your phone state
overclock (speed) / undervolt (battery)
CIFs for mounting windows shares or presenting itself as a windows share (very useful esp over wifi, look ma no cables)
get rid of touchwiz and other preinstalled stuff (I haven't used touchwiz 4 but I like stock android and I'm a speed freak)
I never rooted/custom ROMed my nexus one (as I love stock android) but it was the first thing I did to my galaxy tab and will be the first on my list with any non stock android phone

There's a chance it might get cm7 but it'll require a lot of work, the current sgs has cm7 but its still in alpha stage since samsung doesn't release the source for its proprietary drivers, everything has to be made from scratch(ie. time consuming). I don't think anyone whose working on cm7 for the sgs wants to do this again.

all upcoming HTC devices will have locked bootloader, plus i strongly doubt we're going to see CM7 on SGS2 since Samsung doesnt release (or at least not so far) the source code of the drivers.
wait, does this mean no custom ROMs for SGS2 or rather they will just be less drastic modifications?
for example I don't think the galaxy tab custom ROMs use written from scratch drivers.
sorry new to custom roms.
There will be plenty of custom ROMS. Just not AOSP rom anytime soon.
Basically with AOSP you will loose a lot which includes all the multimedia capabilities ( ability to play many containers and codecs natively with hardware acceleration ), hardware GPU acceleration in browser, probably MHL link and HD recording.
There are very few people who will be ready to give up all this to get AOSP rom for this phone.

Man,never been a big fan of CM Roms, have moved to MIUI Froyo Rom{now with Formels MIUI Android 2.3 Rom},,tried CM many times but battery drain & other force close issues were in plenty.MIUI works best with my Nexus 1,,extremely fast, smooth, less battery drain ROM.
As far as Sensation goes,i hope it will be rooted, also it will be by June end when both SGS 2 & Senation will be launched in my region,so will have clear idea as to which one is getting more devs support{as xda support is what is most important for me rather than the phone itself}.
Have such a great time with N1.

Not only Cyanogen, there are various different devs with their custom roms, but CM is used in most of the droids.
Samsung Galaxy S has a pathetic lag issue/faulty gps issue.
Even after so many lagfixes & workaround{in various roms},it still is very fragile.
Therefore you will definitely see people asking about SGS 2 lag issue or any GPS issue{hopefully GPS is great here in SGS 2 by default compare to quite pathetic in SGS}

As I said, I'm a HTC fan, but one thing I am not is a Sense fan! I can only presume that will extend to TW, although I have never tried it. I also like to run my phone at 190dpi instead of the standard 240dpi that most phones run at. And with Sense at least, when you change to anything other than 240dpi, it does not like it one bit!

I agree with you, having the Voodoo mod available for the 4.0 is a huge plus.
So far there's a lot of resource for the 4.0 where as the 4.2, I was not even able to root it, all the 4.0 methods won't work on the 4.2. It's going to take a while for solutions to pop up for the 4.2.
I bought the 4.0 for $149 at Bestbuy today and the 4.2 is on sale for $179 this week so I was thinking I would get them both and then return one of them. Best Buy recently changed their return policy to 30 days (used to be 14 days) which is helpful.
The features I like about the 4.2 are the front speaker, larger batteries and the less of the chrome trim like on the 4.0. Also it has the newer version of the touchwiz which is much nicer than the one on the 4.0.
Do you have any opinion on which stable custom rom will give me the newer version of tourchwiz like on the 4.2? I really can't stand the lock screen on the 4.0.
Thanks again for everything.
If you don't mind battery life you have CM7 and if you want a custom stock rom try klin's klassic. Also the gpu on the 4.0 is better as well as the Web browsing.
Sent from my YP-G1 using xda premium
I read about the Klassic Rom and also the CM7 but decided to wait because of the issues users reporting with them.
I need a stable mp3 player with good battery life which the 4.0 is out of the box but just wish it had the newer version of Touchwiz like the one on the 4.2.
I wish there is a rom out there with just that and no other tweeks.
I think I will pick up a 4.2 tomorrow and give it another go to see which one I like more.
Would you mind posting after you compare the two? I've been looking for a media player to replace my wife's aging Archos 605 wifi. The Galaxy player series looks nice but I wanted something mod-able which the 4.2 doesn't look like it's it.
I've really been trying to decide between the 5.0 and the 4.0 so I can run a custom rom.

I just picked up a 4.2 today, I think I will keep it and wait till the talented moder's here to come up with something nice for it. The most important thing that I decided today was that I can live with it the way it is out of the box so any enhancements that becomes available later is just gravy.
Compared to the 4.0 it feels a lot more "current", which I know is a highly subjective opinion but the 4.0 with the rounded corners and thick chrome border/bezel it reminds me of the old iphone which I hated.
Also the 4.2 run 2.3.6 vs the 4.0 running 2.3.5. The 4.2 has a newer version of Touchwiz which is much better than the one on the 4.0.
The media player on the 4.2 is also a newer version with some DSP features not found on the 4.0.
The 5.0 runs 2.3.5 so it should be pretty similar to the 4.0 since they came out at the same time.
I personally think 4.2 is the best overall size for my application which is an mp3 player for while I'm driving. I checked out the 5.0 at the store today and there is no way I can use it one-handed which is a deal breaker. Also, I already own a tablet so I really don't need the extra screen size on the 5.0 in a mp3 player.
If you live close by a Best Buy you should just go and play with all of them.
Cheers.

yea, that's kind of the feeling i was getting. the player would be for the wife, and i really don't think in the long run she cares about root, or ICS or etc. she just wants something that works, that she can plug into her car stereo and play mp3's. the 4.2 is newer with a better battery and newer OS so i'll probably go that route.
thanks for the insight.
i got the 4.2 and so far i am loving it. i am upset about the no root solution yet but hopefully soon. but for now i am having 1 problem. acording to samsung, the front facing camera is unable to be used for video. which is true in every app except skype. so theres a problem with that. however when it gets a root, i bet it can be fixed.

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a valid and portable media device for running or to plug it into my cars radio aux.
So it seems there's lot of nice stuff going on with the 4.0 version but almost nothing for 3.6 and 4.2 or am I wrong?
I checked the development section but I was a lil surprised.
So I just wanted to ask are there any ICS or CM things going on?
Does it make sense to move forward to a 4.2 or to grab a 4.0 where it seems that there is much more going on?
Are you guys able to give me a valid answer regarding the build in audiochip?
Thx in advance!
Flow
Well, as far as development, yes, the 4.0 and 5.0 have alot more going for them, since they have been around longer, and everyone that would buy an android pmp bought them, so no one was left to buy the 3.6 or 4.2, lol! As far as hardware, there is really not much difference. The 4.0 has an exynos clocked at 1ghz, the 4.2 have a omap clocked at 1ghz. The 4.0's exynos is actually slightly superior, but they are close to the same. Concerning sound chip, the 4.0 has a wolfson WM8994 and the 4.2 has a WOLFSON WM1811. I am no audiophile, so the 4.0 sounds great to me, never heard a 4.2 though. More info on all galaxy players here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457

I would definately go with the 4.0. The only advantage the 4.2 has over the 4.0 is aesthetics, whic for me doesn't justify the lowe-power sgx35 (as opposed to the 40 the 4.0 has), a lower-res camera (2.0 vs. 3.2), and the support the 4.0 has (me and team supernova), not to mention the excellent DAC we have.
Even if you are audiophile, SoundAlive's complete form is in 4.0 and 5.0 froyo. Gingerbread one doesn't have SoundAlive (Samsung says that they do but it's worse than equalizers in market.)
4.2 has half alive SoundAlive
At first thx a lot for that detailed information!
How to define an audiophile???
Music is very important to me and I prefer to buy quality, if the sound is crappy then it was too cheap.
But even $100+ in ear headphones make no sense to me!
I was focusing on an ipod touch 5G but 4xx Bugs just to have 64GB of Music... and to be punished with itunes. NOPE!!!
So I definitely plan to buy one of the mentioned devices and to add 64 GB with a SD card.
This guy here wrote something regarding the good wolfson audiochip and the terrasilent kernel:
amazon.de/review/R1UR1YBD071LJ/ref=cm_cr_pr_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B005BN4X5Y&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=#wasThisHelpful
So is it possible to add a rooted ICS and the mentioned Kernel to 4.0?
Or did this already happen?
Sorry for that low-profile question but until now I dont get the connection between kernel and OS
@ Han
I didnt get your sgx35 comment- is it a low performer a low consumer?
Did you want to say the CPU of the 4.0 is better than the one inside the 4.2? Did you mean 40 hours of playback?
Aesthetics is really an own point but I agree with you.
Is anyone of able to give a feedback regarding batteries with higher capacity?
Kind Regards from Germany!

I also installed PowerAMP and Voodoo Sound.
The GUI seems to be a little laggy and the brwoser freezes pretty often.

I also want to use a 64GB SDXC, any hints on the formating?

I also installed PowerAMP and Voodoo Sound.
The GUI seems to be a little laggy and the brwoser freezes pretty often.
Did I do something wrong or how can I speed it up? Settings?
W-LAN works and the cam, too.
I also want to use a 64GB SDXC, any hints on the formating?
Kind regards

One thing that you can do is convert the file system to ext4. The stock file system is rfs. I forgot the thread but you need to make a backup and change the rfs to ext4 and change the md5 around. SDXC should work just as an SDHC. No formatting required. I did the ext4 mod to my 5.0 and my quadrent score is now just below 1900

Thx in advance.
I put the SDXC in the 4.0 and just formatted it within the the device.
Windows as well as the degvice itself says 59GB (what I expect to be right).
So the ext4 format only increases speed or does it also help for somethign else (file size)?
Are you talking bout the internal format or the SD?

Hi guys,
I'm looking for a valid and portable media device for running or to plug it into my cars radio aux.

The 5.0 has the most custom ROMs, if that's what you're looking for.

fyi, as you can read I already boight a 4.0 or do you mean I can use the same ROMs?
Honestly, I've been using 4.2 for few months now and it's pretty good, but yeah the camera is sorta crap.
It's same price as 4.2 for bigger screen and more battery, but I guess less camera and some other stuff.
Speakers IMHO are great, and yes I use PowerAMP so all my music sounds amazing regardless or Soundalive jibberjabber
It's a good device, and I'm thankful that it's rootable now. I might just buy a 4.0 considering how much more support there is for it.

Most of the custom roms for the 4.0 don't support the camara so you're still better of than me!
the two best ones not based on CM do lol. icy fusion and ethereal

Hello community. In a new galaxy player. 3.6 owner. My other devices are the Verizon fascinate and Verizon galaxy s3. I would post this in q and a. But it seems xda skipped it.
I realize this forum is for. 4 and 5. But what are the differences and similarities between these devices? Is there any ability to cross roms or kernels? Is there development for 3.6?

well the 3.6 and 4.2 do "live" in this section as they are considered the "second gen" of the 4.0 and 5.0, so your in the RIGHT spot but no the 3.6 is the crappy defective "runt of the litter" and virtually no DEVS have one, this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31823330 is ALL there is.

That's a bummer. Got it for my mom for Xmas. Was hoping to speed it up with Aosp (she has never owned a smart device) and would not know the difference. Just wanted to butter it before wrapping.
Also would be nice to have long press volume skip.
Thanks for the response. I was a little lost and confused when Google didn't find any development results.

I make it a thing, when I have to replace something (like my SGP 4.0, because my microSD slot is failing) to look for devices in my price range and then come here to xda to see what the DEV scene is like and if it's strong enough to go for it, thats how I ended up with getting Tab 2 7" to replace my SGP 4.0, it has many ROMs of all Flavors ICS, 4.1 JB, CM10.1 nightlies just started this week just a good strong and fast little device, and since it has a 4,000 mah battery I can go 3x longer between charges.
The only thing that exists for the 3.6 is root on the stock rom. If you are using a 3.6 with a physical home button then use the eu rom, otherwise (capacitive home button) use the us root.

I am looking for a device mainly as a VOIP device. I can get a Galaxy samsung S for around 70-100 around here average from craigslist but was also considering a player 4.0 or 5.0 - problem is the 4.0s go for a little bit more (right now I have a guy willing sell me his mint one for $85). However, I've seen the 5.0 for around 120-150 refurbished or like new used and really like 5" screen. What would you guys do?

No one?!
Do you also want to use it in long trips or for GPS? If then the extra battery capacity from the galaxy player 5 suits the needs. Because honestly all of the following works perfectly well for a VOIP. Also if you are looking for development support from XDA you might consider the galaxy s. I would personally get the galaxy s because of the better custom roms and the capability of using a backup battery, which a player 5 cannot do

The Galaxy Player 4.0 is based on the Galaxy S1 so I'd go with the S1 because there are way more devs for it. Spec vs Spec the only thing in favor of the GP 4.0 is that it has duel stereo speakers and that's about it lol. The S1 has a much better screen and better camera. Now the 5.0 is a little different. It has of course the Screen Size, LED Flash, and a much bigger battery. Also it has a bit more devs, however it's screen is actually worse than the 4.0's and it uses a Yamaha DAC so it's sound quality isn't as nice as the GP4.0/S1 (whom use the same DAC). So like I said go for the S1 and be careful shopping on craiglist.
5.0 is worth it with reservations - old rom and no updates

hi
I've already bought a 5.0 from new and overall I'm reasonably impressed. It's a good vivid player with all the flexibility of Android to boot and a microSD card slot!.
I decided to purchase a separate music device rather than run my phone that way to avoid running my battery down...
However I would warn you that for the UK version that I bought, it seems to be stuck running Android 2.2.2 with no sign of an update any time this century. It's starting to be restrictive with regards to apps. Furthermore although some will tell you "just root it and update the rom"...I've yet to see a simple (for a noob) rooting process and set of roots that would at least match the stability of the stock version for the 5.0/4.0.
I've searched the fora and there's a lot of info to digest....
Did you try superoneclick?

Just some food for thought. I noticed that the Galaxy Player line is no longer available to buy, brand new, from Amazon (only third party sellers) and that Best Buy shows any of the players as "not available for shipping". I was curious what was going on and begin to find that it is possible the Galaxy Player line is being entirely discontinued. I hated to hear this, but think it is important to keep in mind as Dev support could become continuously smaller - it isn't large by any means at the moment.
If you are okay with the possibility of no support outside of forums, I would say to go for it. They are great devices as media players and even a type of 'wifi only' phone. Good luck with your decision!

Good choice you should be careful buying a used galaxy though. They are notorious for the power button breaking. There's a workaround however by installing an app where you can turn it on with a volume button.

They are still available on Amazon UK:

I looked up kies mini and it seems they are device specific, I've installed kies regular and it says I'm on the latest firmware already.
I know I could try updating to 2.3 with Odin, and from what I understand that would be to the stock 2.3.5 that the US 5.0 Wi-Fi comes with. This is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYjIyVXRGM
I just don't know if it might break something, is there a big improvement to updating to gingerbread? Like how is the performance?

uninstall Kies regular and try Kies mini. mini upgrades basically all the galaxy s products so it's safe to assume that it would work on the gp. plus it was mentioned by Samsung themselves in order to upgrade the galaxy players.
gingerbread is not exactly a huge improvement in terms of performance, but it gets way better app compatibility. for example you don't need to root your gp if you want to use the power button alternative if the button ever breaks. and it's a more appealing to the buyer's eyes.
um... that's all the differences I know of

I've just given it a go and kies mini isn't recognizing the device, if I connect it in mass storage mode it tells me to reconnect in kies mode, when I do that it just sits there completely unaware I have even plugged it in, while the computer makes the 'connect' sound followed shortly afterwards by the 'disconnect' sound.
Thanks for your help anyway

I ended up getting a mint Droid X for $45 after flashing ICS I was really satisfied with it as it seemed just as fast as my old G2x (that I killed trying to fix - so many probs and bad battery life)... however while battery life was decent 6 hours screen time, I decided to try a GB rom and its at 49% after 10 hours of almost continuous usage.... the phone, while not as powerful as the latest dual cores or even the galaxy S is very smooth and fits my needs... highly recommend anyone who is in my shoes to check out used phones to use as a VOIP cuz there's really good devices/deals out there!

In the menu of kies mini was an option to reinstall drivers I tried that but after leaving it for 20min at least it was still at 0% so I canceled it. Are the drivers on the Samsung website different? When I look at the support section for the YP-G70 it doesn't give any drivers.

If you want stable look for custom roms that are based off of stock, like Chip v1.5. These ones provide mostly, if not, all the features that are available for the default rom and provide extra features. Check this out for more details. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457
