[Q] Is my CPU/RAM/phone dead? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, you'll have to excuse me for the wall of text, but it is necessary to fully describe my ordeal.
I bought an used atrix about 4 months ago from ebay (and i'm now deeply regretting it, too many issues). When I first received the phone I was unable to hear callers, even though they could hear me (badly, but could). I resolved that the easiest way possible: I bought a headset. Even with that issue and since it was impractical for me to return the phone because I'm in a different country (customs alone were over $100) I continued to use it. I flashed CM7 and ATT N_.37, flashed TWRP 2.1 and I enjoyed my phone for a couple months (even with the audio issue). Then one day, I went to bed with my phone on a full charge and in the morning I found it turned off. I tried to turn it back on and nothing happened. I thought maybe the battery had been drained by something, because I had left 3G data enabled. I tried to charge it and nothing happened, except the phone started to get really really hot in the lower part so I decided to disconnect it. I tried again a couple hours later and same thing happened. Next day I hit the power button and was able to enter android recovery. I wiped and factory reset, reinstalled cm7, gapps and radio and phone turned on and showed around 60% charge and it seemed fine and then all of a sudden the led started glowing light blue. Then the phone shut down and started to boot loop. I took off the battery, let it rest a while and then when I turned it back on everything worked fine (still, minus audio). That was two weeks ago. Today, it started to do the something similar but worse. Blue led flashing and boot loop are there but if I enter recovery I can't find anything in the sdcard, and if I place a microsd in the slot it isnt recognized. Also, led is flashing blue even while in recovery so I doubt it is a CM7 issue.
tl;dr My phone is dead. Can it be fixed or do I now own a $250 paperweight?

Try to flash your phone with your stock firmware using rsd lite

WARNING! : flash it with YOUR stock sbf !!!

isn't that dangerous? from what i understand with this post it seems as if it isn't advisable to use an sbf on an unlocked bootloader.

Only if you're downgrading. It can work if you do it properly, but it's not recommended. Fruitcakes are the more foolproof way to go.

well i chickened out of the .sbf flash and just tried the moto-fastboot stock restore available elsewhere. while everything seemed to flash correctly i am still bootlooping/shut down. also, light blue led still there and sometimes i get stuck on bootscreen and can't even enter recovery. guess ill have to take it to a shop and see if something can be done. else S>atrix 4g for parts.

thanks for your help and greetings from Colombia (and sorry for my bad english)

Flash the latest sbf for your phone. I've done several with no problems. Yes, you do lose the unlocked bootloader though.
This will return you to stock. I used the same files.

I also have been through several phones with this issue. Although you can flash the sbf with no troubles, that is really only good for sending it into warranty. From my experience, this is a hardware issue, and flashing the stock sbf doesn't solve the problem. If you do not have warranty, a repair shop is your best bet.
Good luck.

Hi,
Yes you can go back to your stock rom. Another yes, you will lose all your files and your bl unlock too. You have to start everithing from the begining. this is a safe method if you flash your own rom.

[Q] Return AT&T Atrix to factory, locked condition?

Hi guys, posting for my wife here. She has an Atrix, running Cherry Pi 0.7 currently (unlocked bootloader, romracer recovery, etc). The touchscreen is completely borked, doing all kinds of weird things. I know it's a hardware issue, i have tried flashing 3 different roms, 4 different keyboards, and multiple wipe/reinstalls of roms. Always does the same stuff with the touchscreen - not responding to input, random multiple presses of qqqqqqqq when trying to type, soft buttons not working, etc.
i want to return the phone to complete stock so i can send it in to Motorola to be either repaired or exchanged. I cannot find any insrructions for this for an AT&T Atrix. How can i get back to stock os, factory recovery, and locked bootloader like when it was new? I tried search, but cant find exactly what im looking for. Can someone help me out, please? Thanks.
its been said before that once you're unlocked, you're always unlocked. Flash a fruitcake for a stock setting.

If you haven't updated to OTA 2.3.4, you can SBF flash 2.2.2 and it will restore your phone to default.
Note: It will remain unlocked, but it won't show the "Unlocked" text during boot.
This way you might get lucky and they fix it without noticing that it's unlocked.
Good luck.

Not pudding, I meant SBF flash full stock 2.2.2 rom.
BUT YOU CAN ONLY DO IT IF YOU HAVEN"T UPGRADED TO OFFICIAL OTA 2.3.4!

guess that's a little moot in this case since he's sending it back to motorola anyways lol
The other suggestion is to sbf flash the 2.3.4 sbf, still may risk hard bricking since it's not really confirmed if it's safe since most of the hard bricks have from sbfing backwards.

Lol hes returning back to Moto anyways ha ha! I'll try it out, I fastbooted to Gingerbread (via Kenn) So I never did the OTA.... so I guess I am safe.
Per this post, you can tell if you've flashed OTA 2.3.4. If it has been flashed already, then DO NOT downgrade to a official 2.2.2 build.

Its safe. I have done it. U can sbf the 2.3.4 (4.5.91) over 2.3.4 (4.5.91) even after ota. I used the pudding sbf and did not brick my phone. Even still, same rules apply, your risk.

Yeah but doesn't using the pudding 2.3.4 (4.5.91) still makes you have the "Unlocked" thing on the boot setting? which is what the OP wants to avoid so if he takes it to like AT&T if they see it and see Unlocked they will void the warranty, I am pretty sure the retail story wont extract his phone to see if the fuse it sparked and unlocked.
Thanks for the replies, guys. I basically need to get back to 2.3.4 with no "unlocked" logo on boot. I'm pretty sure they won't go and check bootloader status for touchscreen issues (I hope).
If I sbf the factory 4.5.91 will it remove the unlock logo and restore webtop, etc?
If I flash the fruitcake version, does that get rid of the unlock logo?
I guess that's my main concern so I can return for repair, just getting it back to appear normal. Thanks again.

I am not sure about the sbf, but I can tell you for sure fruitcake will not get rid of the unlock logo, flashing a fruitcake is only a stock ROM.

No. Only if you haven't upgraded via ota update. If you did, then there is no way of removing "unlocked" yet.

Just a thought... did you ever back up your PDS partition?
Touchscreen issues sometimes are due to pds issues. If you have made a backup, wouldn't be a bad idea to try restoring it to see if that fixes your issue.
If you didn't back it up, take a look at this thread with a pds file that helped others.

Probably a long shot but, I used to have very similar issues with other phones in the past when I've had a screen protector on for awhile and it gets scratched up. Maybe try remove the screen protector if there is one and see what happens.
If it is going back for repair. why not intentionally hard brick it? The first thing they will do is the full blown factory flash, erasing all evidence.
If you do this, make certain you give them a story that somehow describes both the actual problem and the bricked condition (else they might think the un-bricking fixed it and not catch the other issue.
EDIT: Maybe not all evidence, the fuse that was blown when you unlocked a 2.3.4 might be a real hardware type fuse and never be cleared. Don't know.
My device is doing this exact same thing and I'm in the same position you are in. I never backed up the PDS partition, but a backup using the image in the linked thread did not solve the problem. Nor did flashing multiple new ROMs.
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem. It problem seems to go away if you lock the screen a few times, but then later reapers.
Sorry to hijack this thread, but does anyone know if replacing the digitizer will fix this problem? Since I'm in New Zealand this would be an economic solution as shipping to and from the US is pricey.

Ok, I have the same issue as you, I was able to fix the "unlocked" logo ( I havn't taken it back to AT&T yet for warranty, but I will update when I do). So this is what I did, when I upgraded to 4.5.91 I fastbooted it instead of OTA or flashing it, I also unlocked my bootloader by using pudding. Assuming if you did the same, then will be able to flash the official 4.5.91 via SBF ( I wasnt going to try 1.8.3 because I didn't want to risk the brick). I got the 4.5.91 sbf from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125944 ... My phone is still rooted, but the "unlocked" logo is now gone and I flashed fruitcakes so It looks completly stocked now! I hope this helps, I dont think you will fool motorola if you send it in for repairs, but I am pretty sure you can get by with that if you have to return it to the store for warranty reasons! Good luck : )

I just saw this. I ended up using the stock 2.3.4 sbf, and then doing a factory reset in the privacy menu. Now has all the stock info in the "about phone" section. I'll let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the suggestions.
Just got back from AT&T! they said it was a software issue! They gave me the warranty and gave me a refurbished Atrix with 1.8.3, stock froyo on it! I'll stay OTA until CM7 comes out of pre-beta then see how to root it after OTA : )

[Q] Atrix 4G won't start up or install from recovery

After countless hours of research, I decided to unlock my bootloader and to root my Motorola Atrix 4G. With success, I was happy to have everything working and installed the Darkside Custom Rom. I let a friend borrow my phone, and they saw the AT&T system update and they decided to install it. They bring back the phone and the system update has finished and was installing. The phone powers off and starts to install the update. 10% into the install, it stops, and I got the little green droid man with the /!\ behind him. I take out my battery, place it back in after 30seconds. It powers on, boots up, powers off and tries to load the update again. I restart it, but this time quickly going into RomManager and starting it up in Recovery Mode. I go to restore the phone using the file I backed up from the TitaniumBackUp app, everything backs up except the system. I plug my phone into my laptop, and everything is in the folder. I performed a system/factory reset, downloaded the last Gingerbread update, but nothing helps. Anything I try to load it says "Installation aborted". No matter if it's the original update or a ROM I download. Looking up other forums, I notice others that have downloaded the Darkside ROM have had the same; if not similar issues. I apologize for the length of this message, but I wanted to put in as much detail as I could so you know exactly what the issue is. I look forward to hearing from someone, and thank you in advance!!!
You probably need to sbf it back to a stock ROM and start over. I had a similar problem when I first got my Atrix and the AT&T update first came out. I had already rooted it and didn't unlock the bootloader yet. It tried to update and bricked the phone. Got AT&T to give me another though as I had just got the thing.

Thanks a ton! How would I go about doing that?
You need to download motorola RSD app to you computer. Search XDA for stock firmwares and download one. You will then need to use the button combo to get in to RSD. Connect the phone to your computer and make sure it recognizes. I had an issue where one of my laptops would not recognize the phone for anything. I had to use a different laptop. Once it's done you should be back to stock. The bootloader should be unlocked still. Just root and flash your ROM of choice.

[Q] Stuck in boot cycle...not a wcdma problem

I Have restorted to being the noob that signs up to ask a question...The other day I was driving (pre-root) and I look down to notice my phone had power cycled on its own. I thought it would come back one, boy I was wrong....
It spiralled into endless boot cycle. It would at first reboot get to the 4g screen and then back to the htc...over and over. I was able to get into Hboot, and atempt to do a factory reset that didnt help because it became a endless reboot that way as well.
Now before any of you say "why dont you warranty replace the phone" Im a VZW agent, alas we dont have a warranty on our phones when it comes to our concessions lines...
Now, at that point I said enough is enough and I delved into the world of rooting. I self taught everything within a few hours. I had my phone unlocked and ready to go. I picked Ineffabile (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1420513) to use as a rom, I followed the procedure to a T it installed correctly, but then when it came back on everything seemed to work fine...for about 5 minutes and then it happened agian a power cycle all over again. and again...and again. It now comes on works for about 5mins and then reboots.
Im at a complete loss at this point I have gone back into the SD card and deleted the ph98 file etc.... I just dont know what to do. I need this phone to work.
Any help is appreciated Thank you so much!
I know you said it's not the wcdma problem but will your phone stay booted with the back cover off?
Else I'd ruu back to stock. Could try the different radios and see if it helps.
If you want to try the older radios and are on the OTA you'll have to hexedit you mainver. There's a guide if you look.
older radios? Im still new to this so I applogize...
A couple weeks ago there was an OTA (over the air update) that updated the radios - what controls the calls part of your phone and can affect reception and other stuff, I don't know everything it does. So if you wanted to try the older ones there's a thread somewhere, I think by con247, that has the older ones.
Here's a couple guides to help you get familiar with rooting stuff:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/129648-quick-intro-rooting-those-new-rooting.html
You can try flashing the kernel again. Sometimes bootlooping is a kernel issue, although it doesn't seem to be the cause of your situation.
How about insurance? Do you have that? Can you still get it?

I dont have insurance =/ and cant get it either. Im trying to find the radios, and what kernal should I be flashing? because I cannot find the one that should match the rom im using.
What I dont understand is why the phone powers on, works for a few moments like nothing is wrong what so ever. Then freezes and reboots.
Oh, there's a new way of packing a ROM with a script that then installs the kernel so I guess it's all together now on Ineffabilis. Here's a link to the MikMik forum where they still have the stock rooted kernel as a separate download:
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...-Beats-Tweaks-2-01-605-11&p=164906#post164906
Just take off the part of the name before PH98IMG.zip, put it on your external sd card. Do a battery pull, then reboot into bootloader by holding volume down + power. It will flash it and I think reboot. Then delete the PHzip file after that.
Don't know if it will help...
Oh... when you flashed Ineffabilis, did you restore any data from a backup? If yes, try flashing again and not restoring any data, just set up everything again manually. Also, if you restored any data from another phone's backup that could have caused problems. Basically you don't want to restore data from a different ROM.

[Q] rezound boot loop/ *#*# not working

So i would like to apologize first off by saying i am a complete and total noob in every sense of the word. This is the first time trying to root any phone. ok so heres the deal, the phone powers up... FINALLY... and will load to the homescreen but reboots the device. I used the BAMF ICS rom and put in a PGIMGnewfirmwarepeople.zip... ive tried to do the *#*# but as soon as i bring it up i can only get maybe the * or at best the *# but then it reboots itself. I mess with cars on a daily basis but unlike a car part i cant bang or heat up the phone to get the desired result. i attempted to do this since i saw the video on the rezound redifined 4.0.3 ICS with nova launcher.. it was a video by driodzero?
i have no idea where to go from here... i would greatly appreciate any help anyone can provide
If it is indeed a network bootloop, try booting with the backpate removed. As long as the network signal isn't overly strong it should be able to get you in.
i think that was one of the things i did... i tried to let it boot with the back off, then with the back off and SIM card out... but to no avail. is there a way to somehow cmd prompt the *#*# in order to switch the problem... i dont know if this helps but it is S-ON
No SIM means no signal, which means no network bootloop. Must be another cause. Looking at the Bamf ICS thread, did you upgrade your firmware to ICS properly first. Hmm.
i will go back and look.. the problem is it will not let be go back and down grade img file...

Yeah, S-off is suggested eventually since it allows you to downgrade from the leaks. Risk of perma-brick in certain situations, like flashing a bad download of radios. But it helps more than hurts to have that freedom.
On S-on you also need to make sure the boot.img gets flashed seperate in the bootloader for a given ROM.
thanx i will try the wire trick to get it to S-OFF but right now i cant even get the phone to power up to the home screen
You can check the hboot/radio version in the bootloader to confirm firmware version. See what it says there.
Would attempt a clean reinstall of the ROM if it is indeed on ICS (hboot 2.21 or 2.25) firmware proper.
Then make sure to wipe system, davik-cache and cache, flash ROM twice, the patch Joelz has, and flash the boot.img as a PH98IMG.zip in bootloader. Then boot the ROM up.
i would definitely try that except i can not get it to power on, nor can i get it to charge... i think its bricked, since ive even gone to the standard battery as well as using different chargers. i greatly appreciate your insight

Rezound on Amon Ra-Sensless Chaos 2 not even turning on

I have searched the forums for a few hours and have not found a problem close to mine. here's the story:
phone was charged to just about 100% when this happened.
HTC Rezound, with Amon Ra recovery, unlocked, rooted, S-ON flashed with Sensless Chaos Red 2.0 and it was working fine.
So I wanted to flash a different kernel. This is where I may have made a mistake. Flashed Rezound Cubed ICS Kernel 2.3.9 and rebooted, it worked but WIFI didnt and the governors weren't available so obviously the kernel wasnt fully installed. Rebooted to fastboot, used fastboot to flash the boot.img for the kernel. This also seemed to work. Phone restarted, went into ROM no problem. Was messing with governors and the phone just shut off. Now it will not turn on, will not charge, won't do squat. Can't get adb to recognize it, nothing. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRICATED and all replies will be thanked!
First, take the battery out. Let it sit for about 10 minutes.
Put the battery back in and press the volume down and power button until you see the hboot screen. If you get there then go to recovery, wipe and reflash your ROM.

did that. let it sit forever. tried to get to hboot. nothing. tried different battery in my phone, no luck.tried different charger. nope. tried my battery in a different phone and it worked fine. took to verizon and they are swapping. new one in the mail. lets hope they don't find out about the whole unlocking, tampering, rooting, flashing business lol.
Thats very odd especially since your s-on and its nearly impossible to brick your phone. Here are some links to 2 ways to unbrick your phone, I have never bricked before and so i have never tried them however. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1833530&highlight=unbrick
and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711408 I hope these help. From what i know about S-ON it protects the essential partitions and files that allow the phone to boot such as the bootloader, radios, etc. so that the system doesnt become corrupted and fail to boot. So the only way i can think of your phone bricking is something in the hardware could have died for some odd reason. If you cant get it unbricked your gonna have to take it to verizon to get a replacement.
