[Q] Looking for a contacts replacement app - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I like the looks of the AOKP contacts app on my rom, but I have a ton of contacts I hardly ever call. What I'm looking for is a replacement apk that has an option to show/hide groups. I have all my contacts grouped by friends/family/females/co-workers. Too much scrolling currently with 20+ family members and 10 co-workers who I might never call, but don't want to not have their numbers in my phone just in case I ever need to. I was hoping Google had added this feature to the peoples app in ICS, but apparently not

[Q] Ringtone for non-contacts?

I switch ROMs a lot. And the way I want my ringtones set up, currently takes a lot of effort.
I have about 50 contacts. I usually set 5-10 of them with a specific ringtone.
But what I would REALLY like, is there to be a generic ringtone for "all CONTACTS" and then another ringtone (Default) for NON-CONTACTS.
So if my phone rings with the default ringtone, in theory, is someone I don't know or has never called me before. But I don't want to filter out all unknown callers, because sometimes I do still need to answer it for a noncontact.
I'd just like to know when I hear the phone ring.
Now in the past, I've gone through the effort of setting a ringtone for each individual contact, but when you reflash your phone at least once a month, this feels like it's more effort than it should be.
I feel like it should only take a simple app or mod that'll go
IF CONTACT IN DATEBASE: Ringtone A
IF CONTACT NOT IN DATABASE: Ringtone B
Is that really so much to ask?
But my efforts to search the market don't leave me with anything like this in app form.
I've also tried contact groups. But that requires you to have duplicate contact entries. The ones loaded into the phone memory and the ones sync'd from your google account. Which is pretty much just as much work if not more.
Because;
I could simply export them to a card file, import them to phone memory and set the groups in a bout 5 minutes. But then if I don't want to see all the names twice (which I don't), I have to go into each contact and select "join contact"
Which is about as bad as setting a ringtone per contact.
Perhaps I'm a little too OCD. But I'm OCD and also an obsessed geek who watches too much Stargate SG-1 / SGA, and I take the Gate = Phone analogy a little too far.
So my ringtones are this:
Noncontact: [SFX] Unscheduled Off-World Activation.] What have we got? [We're not sure ma'am, we're not receiving and IDC] Defense teams standby! Lower the shield! [SFX]
Generic Contact: [SFX] Off-World Activation. Receiving IDC. [Lower shield/open iris] [SFX]
Specific Contact: [SFX] Off-World Activation! Receiving [X-Person's] IDC! [Lower shield/open iris] [SFX]
etc etc etc.
PS. I have an Epic 4G (keyboard) on Sprint. Currently running latest official stock build, however I just came off of ACS ICS 5.5
and am considering reflashing that or going back to FrozenSyndacite 1.2
I have wanted this ability since custom ringtones have existed and I have yet to find a phone application that has a ringtone for "unknown caller". All I can advise is ask the developer of your favourite 3rd party phone app to add it. I filed bug reports with Google during cupcake and donut and they were never addressed.
Cheers!

[Q] SMS Popup

I have been using "SMS popup" on my android phones for years now. Never had a problem until I installed it on this new Rezound. The SMS popup comes up when a new text comes in, it just doesnt pull up the person's profile photo as it's supposed to. It's got to be an HTC/Sense issue. I've used SMS popup on AOSP, Samsung Touchwiz, and Team Hacksung's ICS port for the Galaxy S; all of which funtioned properly.
I know I can get handcent but I really like the way this HTC messaging app looks (and its ad-free, unlike handcent). And SMS popup is such a simple way to accomplish the popup on incoming texts and still allow me to use the manufacturer's messaging app.
Has anybody else run into this problem or have any suggestions?
Thanks!
Do you have your contacts linked? Maybe it doesn't know which one to grab...
Alternatively go with Go SMS which is free and does pop up.

Some contacts are linked, some arent. Either way, neither contact photos shows up.
The way my contacts are set up is, I have a google gmail contacts. None of those have any photos in them. Then I also let facebook sync my friends list to my contact list. Some facebook friends also have a google gmail contact equivalent. Those are the ones that are linked.
This is the same way I've always done my contacts on all my other android phones and it's never been a problem. This HTC phone is the first time I've ran across this problem. It's like the SMS popup is calling for a contact photo, but the HTC version of the contact app is calling it by a different name.
Weird, SMS popup works just fine for me pulling up the contact pic using sense etc (innefilibis ROM if that matters)
By the way, I used Handcent for years (with the ads blocked) but this is the first phone I like the stock SMS so much (with red theme bubbles) I didn't even bother installing it.

Which Text Messaging App Do You Use?

So I reset my phone back to factory recently, and it has broken some of my habits. When I first got my LG G3 in July I choose the LG Messaging app as default and never looked back. After this reset, the Verizon Messaging app was the default, and I've been using it for a few days. So now I'm trying to decide which is better. I liked the UI of the Messaging app better than the Verizon Messaging app, but the Verizon one seems to have more features. It just feels like the UI isn't optimized for the LG G3 screen though. Some buttons are taking up a ridiculous amount of screen real estate.
At one point on an older phone I even used Hangouts for messaging, but it was screwy with Group MMS and I dropped it. They may have worked that out since...
Anyway, wanted to get an idea of what the majority of LG G3 users are using. Thanks!
I use the verizon message+ app for 2 reasons, first, it has a windows client so i can text from my computer which i love, and second, it has a really good pop up notification feature built in, both of those in the same app made me switch from google hangouts. plus, it syncs so when i switch roms i dont worry about losing any (or at least not many) texts. i have had issues with it not sending mms messages, but i havent tried that on Vanir (i just switched from JasmineROM because i was given info about knock code and quick remote apps.)
I use the Verizon App because it allows me to text from the Computer, syncs to my Tablet and lets me text from there as well, and I like that I don't worry about losing any Texts when I switch Roms. Plus, it has a pretty decent feature-set.
I have always used Textra. It doesn't have the PC to text option, but most of my friends have iPhones and the group messaging works perfect, and the option of removing the message text from the quick reply popup (since I have kids that can read). I have never used the message+ one, so I cannot comment on that.

Handcent SMS
http://www.handcent.com/ or https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.handcent.nextsms&hl=en
I have been using this app for several years. IMO it seems to be the best messaging app for my needs. Way too many features to list. Is customizing your sms app your thing? Well they have got that covered.
Myself, I have got to be able to customize my app the way I want it in every aspect. Handcent allows you to customize it better than ANY SMS app that I have tried and I have tried all the major ones out there and many not so major. Each contact can be customized to your your needs.
ie: message background for all or each separate contact, fonts (style, color, size) and can even customize the quick reply box as well with differ fonts colors and sizes. Basically, you can customize every single aspect of this app.
It has backup / restore options for your messages and your settings and group messaging. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface on what all you can do with this app. I hope this helps shed some light on the Handcent app for ya.
Starting using Google Messenger after the recent update. A lot more efficient that Hangouts for me and with gif support it's perfect for me.
I use mysms. Pretty cool because it enables texting via a laptop or tablet but the SMS app for the phone is really nice too... Pretty similar in appearance to cm12 messaging app
I use textra sms tons of features but i use it especially for the quick reply option
Currently Chomp; came from Handcent.
Google messenger and I love it
Switched to Evolve SMS, so far so good!
Google messenger and hangouts

Dialer that shows company/organization on incoming call

Hello,
I have some many Bob's & Franks etc in my phone book when they call i have no idea who it is, is there a dialer app that displays the company info?
Each of my contacts have the company info saved in their google contact info, i just need it to display on the incoming call screen.
THank you,
Bump
Did you ever find one? I'd love to find something that will work without trying 20 different products and getting malware...
I have the same issue...
Same issue
I know it may seem like a pain but for myself I almost never know the last name of anyone so when I store contacts it's usually "Bob NAPA Rep" or "Frank OCC" but you could leave their last names and just add initials or titles on the same line to have it displayed when they call. Doing this on your phone would take forever too so you could log into your Google account and do it from a laptop or pc and it would be much easier and faster.

Well aren't you in luck if you check this sooner than before. Looking thru Android Central forms there's an app mentioned called Call Notes Pro. There's a free version but you have to get the pro version to get three feature you want but if you go today it's half price. $1.49. the sale ends tomorrow. It's rated 4.9 stars which is unheard of. Best of luck.

Thanks app works. Can show any info from address book and even can add notes.

I use "Smart Notify - Dialer, SMS & Notifications" by Milan Vyšata
There is a free version which is very good (although I'd encourage you to support the developer).
It seems this app also work great as both dialer and show company info.

this does make my help so easier...... I fail to understand why google can't have this company name feature in the incoming Call Screen.

How to show contacts with phone numbers ONLY?

I tried searching the net, but everything I can find relates to MM or earlier. I definitely fixed this issue when I first got this phone, so that only people with numbers were shown in my contacts list. Now I upgraded to Nougat just a few hours ago, and now I can't figure out how to do that again. That option doesn't seem to exist anymore! Am I missing something?? Or did they remove this option from the stock Contacts and Phone apps?
This is absurd. Pulling up Contacts shows a huge list of everyone I've ever interacted with over email, which is beyond stupid, imo. If I need to reach some person via email whom I don't text/call, then that's what the Gmail app is there for. What's the point of this mess? Sorry about the mini rant.
Same Problem
Same Phone, Same Problem, Same Question?!
I'm convinced now that, yes, Google really did think that a dysfunctional Contacts app is what the people want. So, the only solution here is to switch to third party apps. Oh well, not a big deal I guess.
I found a work around, create a new label in contacts and all the contacts with numbers to that label. Then you can customise the view on your phone to display only that label. If you ever add any contacts in the future with a phone number just ensure you add them to that label which you can do via your phone.
