[Q] Force install tablet apps for use on Lapdock - Motorola Droid RAZR

I have a RAZR Maxx on ICS and an Atrix Lapdock. The lapdock with webtop 3.0 works great and you can force the tablet UI to be used (navigation bar on the bottom, etc. etc.). However, when you open apps it still uses the phone version of the apps, which is somewhat annoying for certain apps.
For example, the gmail app. On a tablet, it has a neat interface for a larger screen with a split screen. On a phone, it's just one screen and looks a bit ridiculous when scaled up to a 10" screen.
Anyways, my question is if it's possible to force the tablet versions of the apps to either be used or installed (i'm not sure if the tablet versions of the apps are included when installed or if a different app is installed.) Perhaps the .apks could be extracted, slightly modded, and reinstalled under a slightly different name to use when on the lapdock.
I'm going to guess that anyone who uses the lapdock in ICS with any frequency would love to see a way to do this. And, to be honest, it'd just be nice to do this for a few apps, not every single app I have installed.
So, what do you think? Can it be done?

+1 for this

To respond to my own question....
It seems like the applications that dont have a nice webtop mode are the preinstalled system apps. You can enable the webtop mode by replacing the .apks for the system apps inside the /system/app folder with an .apk from a tablet. Not sure how well it will work after an update. For instance, I grabbed the gmail and talk .apks from my nook tablet and replaced the .apks on my phone...voila webtop gives the tablet view and the phone view is still good.

Hi. Sorry I can't give any help on your question, but could you please tell me how you got Maxx to work with the Atrix Lapdock? I have tried my Maxx with an Bionic and Atrix lapdock and the resolution is terrible. Things are stretched horizontally and the viewable portion of the screen is in letterbox. Almost 2/3's of my lapdock screen is wasted.
I really prefer the old version of webtop and do not like webtop 3.0 at all. Mostly because of the terrible resolution and small screen size.
Any help you could give would be appreciated. Thanks.

For most apps, there is a tablet version you can force inside webtop 3.0 by changing from phone version to webtop version with the little "maximize" looking arrow in the bottom right. You'll probably have to do it manually the first time for each app. (you'll see what I mean). As for the launcher, I setup my system so that I use apex when I'm normally using my phone and nova for when I'm using my lapdock. I simply change the default launcher back and forth when using one or the other. I setup nova to have a ton of icons in the dock (kinda ends up looking like MacOS with the program shortcuts on the bottom) and much more rows and columns on the desktop. I leave an easily accessible shortcut to apex on one screen for when I take my phone out of the webtop. I've thought about messing with the webtop init.d scripts or something to automatically change between launchers or trying to figure out how to have a launcher change some settings automatically. In general, it'd be nice to have a certain number of settings automatically change when bringing up webtop 3.0 in general.
Anyways....it all works pretty well once you get the tablet/webtop versions of everything going.
Good luck!

Thank you! Nova not in market, I will find it somewhere. Tried Halo launcher. Nope, better resolution but still letterbox. Does Nova fill the entire screen? Or will it still be letterbox? Thanks again!

Swiftkey X free on Amazon today.

This is not the tablet version..It's the phone version.
I don't have the nook color with me at the moment. Has anyone tried this on the Nook yet?
I tried to use the beta version on it and I had some issue with displaying the keyboard itself on it back then.
I would try it if I had it with me.. but I won't be able to try it for like 12 hrs from now.
Anyone?
Other than the keyboard being truncated in landscape, which may be a feature of my density being set at 200 I love it.
The tablet version also has this problem. Good thing I was still able to return it when I bought it a couple of days ago.

eh? The tablet version has no such problems. The phone version for some reason the keyboard is small in landscape, but not all of the time... it's wonky.
But the tablet version? No such issue. However I'm running the stock CM7 DPI, could be if you're tweaking that.

If by truncated you mean the numpad in the middle is missing, then yeah. mine does that too at stock dpi.
So i'll take this as not perfectly working on Nook color. for the phone version at least.
So what would people recommend? I've come to like this keyboard on my phone. Is it worth buying the tablet version for the NC? Or just use the phone version?

Jus the use the phone version for now. I have both and the phone version is works as it should. The the tablet version isn't optimized for 7" screens. The the number pad doesn't appear in landscape mode, the space key is unresponsive at the edges and there is no padding options to raise the height of the keyboard to a more comfortable portion of the screen.
My suggestion is to use SwiftKey x and thumb keyboard. There is a awesome paid app called km launcher that will automatically switch keyboards when changing from landscape to portrait and back. The only reason I didn't return SwiftKey tablet x was because it was on sale an I will eventually update to another tablet in the future.
Additional tip: select the arrow keys option in SwiftKey x to raise the keyboard a bit. I hate have to hold my nook at the bottom edges just to type on the keyboard. There is so much screen, and why no give me the option to place the keyboard where I see fit?
Latest Update
The latest Swiftkey X update seems to have helped the landscape problem.
Any tips for getting Swiftkey Tablet setup properly on a manual-nootered Nook Color? On the 2nd step when it wants me to pick a default keyboard, it just bounces me to the desktop and won't continue. I read something about copying the apk file to /system/apps, but I cannot find the apk (I'm guessing setup gets rid of it). Paid full pop for it on the Android Market, so I'd really like to get it working.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer,
Edit: OK, I resolved it. Couldn't see the .apk because I wasn't in r/w mode when browsing the folders - I was using Alpha file manager. When I switched to Root explorer and mounted r/w, then I could see it, copy it from /data/apps to /system.apps, re-install it, and get it setup after a reboot. Hope this helps someone else. Yeah, I know it's posted in myriad places, but what the heck?

[Q] Android optimization

I recently installed CM7 on my touchpad, and I had a few questions for those using android. I have an android phone so I'm pretty familiar, but many applications are not optimized for tablets, landscape or just the resolution. What are some tips or suggestions you all have.
1. Laucher : using go right now, but I'm not liking it too much. Most launchers don't play well with the horizontal orientation, or the bottom taskbar.
2. Phone calling: I would love to be able to make calls though google voice or something. I like gmail calling on my computer, but I'm not sure that will work. I have skype but would like something free. I use ooma at home but their app is expensive and has bad reviews.
3. Weather: I already have enough trouble finding a weather app for my phone, but most don't seem to work in landscape.
4. Market : there seems to be a lot of incompatible apps, even amazon mobile. I tried the market fix but no luck.
5. Keyboard : I'm using SwiftKey x tablet right now and love it, but woud like to hear other people's suggestions.
Thanks,
-Keith
Thumb keyboard is outstanding. Was free app of day from Amazon a while back

Launcher - I have tried them all and I always come back to the stock ADW that comes with CM7 because it is the most configurable and generally works well in landscape mode. I also use the ICS theme to get the buttons and status bar more to my liking.
Phone Calling - CM7 is still in Alpha so some stuff still does not work.
Weather - Don't know what you are looking for in a Weather app or widget but I use the 3D Digital Weather Clock for local weather (tap on the Sun/Moon to get the 5 day forecast). There are a ton of things out there.
Market - I guess I haven't had a problem with anything that I have needed or wanted. You could try programs like LCD Resolution or LCD Density and change it to 200 to see if more stuff shows up in the market for you.
Keyboard - Thumb is great.
market 3.3.11 works just fine for me

webtop theme switcher?

does anyone know a way to switch themes in webtop? i tried using the xfce appearance thing but it doesn't switch. you can easily replace the default theme at webtop-theme but that's no good if you're developing a theme.
is it possible if you install an entire desktop environment like gnome or xface?
Dammit, all this time tinkering with webtop and I never noticed the themes didn't work.
Time to do some research

im had a glitch just now.. i plugged in my phone and noticed icons in the webtop popup menus.. so i opened the xfce4 appearance dialog and switched icon themes, and it worked! so next i tried switching themes.. it flickered and went dead, then relanched webtop with the webtop icons + theme.
so, obviously, yes, you can switch themes. no, webtop doesn't like it when you try. why? i duno. for now, replacing the gtk in the webtop-theme folder works fine and i highly HIGHLY recommend you do so. the default webtop theme is all images. find a gtk/metacity that uses a gtk engine other than pixmap
also, i recommend using setcpu to overclock to a minimum of 1300 when charging, and undervolt -75. webtop performs fairly well this way. minimum lag.
and i found an extension called hide caption titlebar plus for firefox that allows you to have the tabs in title bar effect like windows.. saves a good 22-26px vertical real estate =D
(surely everyone already knows this.. i'm thinking aloud.. with my fingers.. or something =p )
if you install gnome-desktop-environment you can use gnome-appearance-properties to swtich icons, metacity, cursors, and wallpapers.. (install gnome-screensaver followed by gnome-desktop-environment then add "gnome-session" to your osh/usr/local/bin/start-oshwt-2.sh .. if Appearance doesn't appear in System>Properties just create it with alacarte)
however all the controls themes look like the default webtop-theme and when you try to switch anyway bad things can happen.. i just applied the "simple" theme and everything crashed. i couldn't even boot into webtop until i removed all the themes but webtop-theme from the themes folder forcing it to fall back to default.
in gnome you can also access the touch pad controls from system>preferences and adjust touch pad speed.
so far i've had no problems with gnome. everything is running fast as ever and it feels more like ubuntu. ditch xfce4 and run gnome. the keyring wasn't working with xfce4 either = bad bad bad
edit: note that you can still simply replace the webtop-theme gtk with a theme of your choosing.. i highly recommend installing murrine and using mire v2 gtk. it's fast and dark, so the mobile view and such looks good. until i can modify the icons present on the mobile view app you really need to stick with dark controls

scrolling app tray

Just wondering if there was a way to make the full list of apps scrolls up and down like the DROID x. Without an entire rom.
Also looking for a launcher that will only mess with the dock. I want to have 5 dock icons. I tried launcher pro but it won't allow me to place favorite contacts BC it messes with the screens.
I think they work together but worth asking

EclipseROM dot com. His ROM is based off of the newest 2.3.6 work bloat removed and works great on CDMA phones.

I've had a flirt with ADWLauncher EX and it seems to do all that you're asking (app scrolling however you want it and 5 Dock Icons). It does do more as well but just set the options you want!

[Q] Launcher bar no rotate w/custom launchers

I've tried Go Launcher EX and ADW EX launchers on the Flyer and neither will rotate the launcher bar to the bottom of screen when in landscape mode. Searched all the settings and can't see anything that would prevent this. Figure since the Sense launcher can do it the others should as well.
Does anyone know if this is possible and if so point me to the right setting?
I had this same issue with ADW EX which I don't get because the first picture it has on the market shows it running on a honeycomb tablet in landscape mode with the dock on the bottom. Its supposed to be tablet friendly but it actually didn't work for crap in my opinon! my wallpaper was all messed up and off center too!
Anyway google "Go Launcher HD". Its not on the market, at least last I checked it wasn't but I came accross it googling "honeycomb Launchers". Its a beta and needs a lot of work, but its specifically designed for honeycomb!
I have SPB Shell for my phone and could just install that but unsure about how the specs on the flyer would handle it.
Ended up installing VTL Launcher instead and it works as it should. Has a decent amount of options and I like the scrolling dock bar options for each side. Downside is it has no widgets but I just use others from the market for what I need.

This in particular, and the OP's issue in general, may be due to the software not completely supporting our particular hardware. Every tablet handles apps differently. I recommend contacting the developer, and letting them know the issue, and see what they say. Be sure to specify Flyer (or View, if that is the case) and Honeycomb.
