Just got my Prime and updated to .28 then rooted it ,unlocked the bootloader,installed CWM and finally installed TWRP. Booted into TWRP and made a backup. Now I want to install a ROM once I do that and I want to restore to the backup of the orig. with unlocked bootloader can I do that (use that backup) or will I brick it by using this backup...

You can absolutely use twrp to restore a backup you have made with it. If I understand correctly you want to flash a new rom to play around with it, but ultimately go back to where you are at right now. Yes, you can do that.

Hey guys I actually did this exact same thing and after restoring my backup my apps aren't installing. About half of my apps are there but the other just aren't there. What would the reason be that's causing this

I would be a little hesitant to use TWRP at this point. Some users, including myself, have been experiencing soft bricks when restoring. The problem seems to be that the kernel is not properly restored for some users using TWRP. If you really feel compelled to use this, I would have a kernel.zip on your sdcard (like one of motley's) so you can boot your restored rom. Otherwise you are going to have to restore using fastboot. Personally, I would rather use CWM until they have figured why some people are having this problem.
Interesting, was unaware of the twrp issue. The latest crm is unable to create backups. Guess i could use an older version of crm.

If you check the TWRP thread in the dev section there are people complaining about this. I hope they sort it out soon because it has some really cool features.

There's the million dollar question! First I would decide if you want a stock or non-stock rom. If you want the ASUS experience, I would try Virtuous. Diamondback makes solid roms. If not, your choices are basically AOKP, CM9, team Eos or Gummy. I have used them all a lot and prefer CM9. I am using Makelegs' CM9 Skankwich kang and think it is really solid. I will be sticking with it for a while, which is something I have found difficult to do! AOKP is really good rom too, but you will have to look on Rootzwiki for that.
A lot of it comes down to personal preference. If you have the patience I would give them all a go and see which works best for you. Flashing is generally very safe as long as you have a backup and a rom on your sdcard. I have had a load of fun messing with all the different roms.

Hi, I'm currently using the latest ClockworkMod as my recovery. I've never had any problem with it (had it on my og evo as well), but I'm hearing a lot of great things about twrp recovery, so I'd like to make the switch. I'm all clear on most of the process, but is it correct that I'll need to make new nandroid backups? If so, should I delete my cwm nands? How would I go about doing that? And am I correct that I'd need to revert to my stock (first) nandroid, flash the new recovery from there, make a new twrp nandroid, and then go back to cm7? If u want to go back to cwm to restore an old nandroid just dl rom manager from market and reflash cwm it will flash over Twrp and then u can use your cwm nandroids.

As you guys know, we can't flash boot images directly from Recovery. This makes restoring nandroid backups more difficult.
Well, not anymore. This flashable allows you to restore the boot image from a nandroid backup directly from recovery. For those of you who are experts, this duplicates the functionality of "fastboot boot recovery.img" in a self-contained zip.
To Use:
1) Flash the attached zip file
2) Press Volume UP when prompted at HBOOT
3) Reboot the Device (it will probably ask you to press power to do so)
NOTE: If the device doesn't reboot on its own, reboot "normally" not into recovery. It will take you to recovery automatically. If you go into recovery via the HBOOT menus, you still won't be allowed to restore boot images.
4) Restore your nandroid and with its boot image. It will flash this time
5) Done.
How it works:
1. Dumps your recovery image
2. Zips it into a viable PH98IMG.zip and drops it on your SD card
3. Downgrades your main version
4. Reboots to HBOOT so you can flash it
5. You then boot into unprotected recovery.

Worked perfectly ! wow, nice job just like using my OG droid now with backups I had quit making them since I always had to remember what kernel for the rom etc.. tried the endeavor leak and afterwards flashed my backup without a hitch

yep. It just allows Recovery to flash the boot image, but it is temporary.

Yeah but it offers no benefit or extra ease. The way we install custom roms right now is the ideal way.
con247 thank you so much for this. I fastboot flash everything from the computer. But two guys that I help out on gtalk on a regular basis had a bunch of trouble with the PH98 process, but aren't able to use fastboot on their computers while at work.
Both guys have been using this rom very heavily going back and fourth between ICS and gingerbread, and both have confirmed this is very easy for noobs compared to the fear they have of ADB, fastboot.exe, and the cmd line.

I used this quite a bit the other night , after I ran the RUU before I found out restoring old backups was a bad idea LOL. Still worked flawlessly though , so this tool has been invaluable to me ! I started making backups again
I can't restore any backups. I'm using the latest amonra. It just says oops check recovery log. I tried doing it regular and with this but they both failed and I had to use the ruu to recover each time. I don't understand what the problem is.

It might be related to using the Amon Ra 3.14 and trying to backup android secure. Dres, just released a fix because the Devblock location changed so it borked making or restoring backups that contained android secure. Sorry , if this wasn't helpful , but I realized my backups worked because I never backup android secure. Just figure it might save you a lot of debugging when its probably on the recovery this time not the app.

You could have also gotten a bad download. This script shouldn't be affected by the new firmware.
Thanks guys but I figured it out. I left a space when renaming the folder containing my backup. So once took out the space I was able to restore.

From what I've heard you should never update CWM. Also are you backing up in recovery? or Using (God forbid) Rom Manager
CWM is easy to install.
There are two methods that I know of.
The first being using ROM manager though it could (ironically) break it and your device end up in a soft brick.
The second is to manually push it using adb, but first you must download the CWM for our phone (i777) from the clockwork mod website.

Don't tell him to use rom manager.
CWM is part of the kernel on our phones, so you would have to find a kernel with the version of CWM you want to install and flash that to update it.
Are you sure you have enough free space on your SD card to do a backup?
I am using recovery, not rom manager. If I shouldn't update it, how should I backup without getting that error?

I can't stress this enough to people.
For the ATT Samsung Galaxy S2, model SGH-I77, ClockworkMod is a custom recovery built into a custom kernel. It is not separate and you do not flash or update it separately. Please do not attempt to update ClockworkMod at all, this will only result in a soft brick.
As mvi57 said, if you want a newer version of CWM, you'll have to find a custom I777 kernel which has the newer version built in.
I wish we could place this warning somewhere where newbies can see it while trying to flash stuff. I'm glad we caught OP before he soft bricked. OP, I don't mean to make you sound stupid or anything by such a highlighted post, I just want to warn as many newbies as possible, and I'm hoping they see your thread and thus this post.

Just install the latest cm9 nightly for the i777. It will install cwm 6.0.1.1... our device is different than others, cwm must be built into the kernal.
I made a backup of my HTC EVO LTE Stock ROM in TWRP, I flashed CMX, now I want to go back to Stock, so I went to TWRP>Install, I can see my backup folder under /sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS/name of backup.. but I when I select the folder it does not give me the option to Install it. It just opens as an empty folder. I did notice the folder is not in a .zip format. Is this the reason why? Did I miss something during the back up process? And if so, how can I fix it? Is it as easy as just converting the regular folder into a .zip folder then try to install it this way?.. Please tell me not everything is lost, lol.. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

There should be a restore option on the main screen in twrp recovery. If you hit that it will allow you to choose what file you want to restore

You can't restore back up made in clockwork mod using twrp recovery.

Need to Restore But Getting Black Screen
Okay so my situation is similiar to the OP.
I was running CM10 then a custom sense Rom.
I made an original backup, but when I restore it I get a black screen at boot.
Typically when I flash a Rom I have to fastboot flash the boot.img which is no biggie, but there's no boot.img that I can find in the twrp backup.
Might be just as easy to flash a stock Rom, but not sure exactly where to find one. Everything I've found is rooted or custom in some way.

The ROM I'm trying to restore is the original state of my phone. Would this be a stock ROM with a versioning date of October 28th(the day I got my phone and made the backup), current stock ROMs, or launch stock ROMs. Basically will any boot.img work from a stock ROM?
I do see the boot sector being written during the restore process. There is a boot.something.win file in the backup folder for the backup. Can this be fastbooted? I'm a bit timid to try that, but thinking it may be worth a shot...

clockwork recovery f's up your misc partition on this phone.. DO NOT use clockwork mod recovery on this phone! it f ed up mine.. mines fixed now but it was a pain to fix

Thanks for the quick reply, QuickWizard is very fitting. I actually got it after I finished going my own route though.
I grew a pair and went with my got and I went ahead and flashed the boot.emmc.win from the twrp backup in flashboot. It successfully got me booted and logged into the phone. That said the stock rom is so crappy...
But, I was having issues on CM10 with MHL, on a "stock rom with goodies" I was having radio issues with the latest firmawares, so now it's back to my rooted stock backup and I'm doing the HTC System OTA update... Should be interesting what happens next...

How did you manage to get this to work? I have tried now three times and each time when i attempt to flash the file in TWRP it fails. Has anyone else had luck with this? Does it maybe not work with TWRP?

When googling this earlier I ran upon a post that said dude had to log onto the tablet after flashing a new rom and then go back into TWRP to flash the zip drive--flashing directly after flashing the rom did not reload the apps.

Yea I tried that and still can't get it to work On my TF300T. I tried all sorts of stuff, flashing gapps then rebooting and trying again. Everytime I get an error that it can't mount /external_sdcard. No idea why because the TF300T has no external sdcard.
I am now doing the old fashioned batch restore option. Oh well better than nothing I Guess right.

i am using twrp and no problem here. Flashed the Titanium update many times now and everything is working fine.
Can I ask what version of TWRP? Are you on the ics bootloader or jellybean? I am just trying to eliminate some of the few possible big differences. I am running twrp 2.3.1.0 and I am on the Jellybean bootloader. I can get the sytem to flash the update.zip that contains just the titanium backup app itself, but I can't for whatever eason flash the update.zip file that contains all my apps and data.
Anyone know if there is a size limit? My file is over 1GB, maybe this is the issue?
