It's been well documented on these forums that the phone won't fully charge to 100%, mine actually charges to 100% but when unplug the charger it goes to 98%,,tried to calibrate the battery but no joy, am i to assume it's only Samsung who can provide some update to fix this or is there an alternative method does anyone know?
Bit disappointing as i cant say i ever had this problem with the SGSII although not taking anything else away from this superb phone.
These phones don't charge to 100% anyway to preserve the longevity of these li-ion batteries.
They charge to 96% or thereabouts.
The 100% in the status bar is purely for show.

I've noticed the same thing. When I first got the phone it would charge to "100%" then drop instantly to 99% when unplugged, I figured it was a way to increase the longevity of the battery and reduce the risk of overcharging.
But now I'm not so sure on that, it charges to 100% but drops to 98% straight away, not 99%.
For those saying it's a "feature", I find that hard to swallow given that the % is decreasing. I think it's more likely there's a bug in the firmware with the battery meter. Hopefully Samsung sort it out soon.

This is quite simply not true.
Both of my previous generation S phones charged to 100%, same for a friends HTC and a workmates LG.

This is not true, my SGSII charged to 100% and stayed at 100% and didn't just drop to 99% or 98% so there has to be an issue here, not a feature at all certainly as far as Samsung are concerned.

The UI showed it as 100%, but it wasn't ACTUALLY 100%.
Maybe on the gs3 it compensates for the 4% difference faster, who knows.

Well if your battery life is fine then forget about it. Would you rather the phone showed 100% even though it wasn't at 100%?
It probably just compensates the difference between 100% and actual charge faster to show true battery life faster.
Even if it is a bug your battery still has the same amount of charge in it so what's the big deal.

As i said that is not the issue, if it really is 100% then it should actually say 100% and not any less, it's like if you walked into a bar and the barman poured you a pint with a massive head on it but when that head went down after a few minutes it showed as a bit less than an actual pint, same difference mate, if your paying big bucks for a high end smartphone you expect these type of things to show correctly, im not gonna lose sleep over it but undoubtedly it is a bug that they should really fix.
The phone does charge to 100% but will then start to discharge back to 95% before charging again, being static at one level for too long reduced the overall life of the battery.what I have been doing is unplugging my phone first thing in the morning and recharging it again for a few mins

I was under the impression that these batteries never charge to full capacity as it reduced the lifespan of the batteries.
Not sure where I read it but I'm sure that's what it said. I'm not doubting you but I'm just confused. When it charges to 100 back to 95 is that true 100% battery capacity?

Samsung do need to provide a firmware fix for this, it's not what one would deem to be a massive bug but is one nonetheless and if it worked ok in the SGSII it should work the same in the Galaxy S3.
I assume Samsung will provide a fix for this at some stage, but to be honest given their track record id expect someone on XDA to come up with a solution sooner:good:
Mine charges to 100%. Once it reaches full charge, unplug the charger and the plug it in for another 10 minutes. This will ready 100% after unplugging. My GS2 was the same way.
ive also read that the phones dont charge to 100%.
a simple google search will bring up this same dilemna from years ago.

I don't know why my phone can only charge to 99% of battery, this is my second charge already and the first charge also can charge to 99% only
Anyone have same problem ?
Just leave it on the charger. Once it reaches 99% charging reduces to a trickle only. This is by design and not a fault. If you charge overnight you should find it at 100% in the morning .

This is renowned in the official samsung roms of the galaxy series. Do not concern yourself, there is nothing wrong with your phone.
so the best thing to do is to leave it like 1 hour on the charger? I find it annoying to .. If it says fully charged and remove the charger it should be 100% and not 99..
Thank you so much. But when my phone charge reach 100% and i leave it continue charge 2 hours more already and it still show 99% right after i unplug charger.
Don't worry about it at all. There is nothing you can do for it to say 100%. No matter how long you leave it on the charger, once the phone says it's at 100% and you disconnect it will drop to 99%. It isn't a fault, it's what samsung does.
If you want to be really nit picky, you could say that within a second of disconnecting the charger, the phone technically has used some of the battery to stay on, no matter how minimal, so 'technically' with some tiny tiny amount of battery used it is no longer at 100%

Leave your phone on charge, go to CWM wipe the battery then reboot. It should go back to 100% shortly. That's what I did and it worked!
Reason why it really doesn't charge 100% is to protect battery as li-ion batteries should never let completely empty or full as the battery can die.

What is the proper way ? I've looked online and people say differently. People say let your battery drop to 15 percent or a little under then fully charge. Then others say let the battery completely run out until the battery dies then fully charge it, but I heard letting the battery completely is bad and not necessary. So what exactly do people when when they say fully discharge or battery manufactures when then say fully discharge a brand new battery then charge?

Down to atleast 3%. That's how I've done it for years. Every opinion differs though
I always charge my phone when I know I will need a full charge, I never really cared about the battery percentage too much, but I do agree that there is no real wrong way.
It's my understanding that in order to properly calibrate a battery you must completely drain it.
From what I've gathered the battery needs to know what a "full charge" is and the only way to get a full charge is to be completely empty.
So following instructions from threads back on the MT4G forums I calibrate my battery by:
1. Letting it completely die.
2. Turning it back on just to make sure it dies again. And I do this til it won't turn on again.
3. Then charging it, while off, til it has a green light.
4. Then I unplug it, turn it on, turn it off and plug it back in til green.
Whether this really really makes a difference or not...well I can't say for sure
but my battery lasts longer than my sister's Amaze.
Hope that helps.

same with me, I never bother with letting it drain fully, I did with my first phone, and a few months after I got it the battery was pooched, so from then on I never cared. plus with the cost of getting a replacement, or even aftermarket batteries like anker, not following procedure to drain then charge a battery is a no brainer for me.
But, if I did care, then I'd drain it fully, then charge it back up. the percentages on my phone aren't accurate anyway. Actually today I was playing blade master and I kept getting the battery warning, and it was pretty steady from 20 down to 5, then hung there for a while, maybe an extra 15-20 mins, then died. so percentages are approximate. a full drain and then full charge should do.
What the other guy listed in steps is correct, though I'll give you a heads up, the amaze battery is total ***** when it dies completely, so be prepared to have it plugged in alllllllll night for it to charge.
Just got my self a replacement, the battery ended up dying, took me four hours to move 8%, was about to go buy a replacement the next day, but I let it charge overnight, it's been remarkable since then.

Lol my bad bro, I was just too lazy to scroll up to look for your name.
So, if you would care about calibrating, do you let it die and fully charge every time you flash a ROM? Or just the very first time when it's new?
Seems every battery is different. I let mine die completely and then charge overnight, but had the green light after an hour and half. I let it stay on though overnight.
I personally didn't see a drastic difference.
A lot of folks day to wipe your battery stats as that helps. I have yet to try that.
Just kinda deal with the 8-12 hours I get on ICS. I used to get 12-16 with gingerbread.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk 2
Wiping battery stats doesn't help, IMO, for the number of times I've tested it on a few devices. My results so far just shows that wiping it just fools the device to stay full longer than it should but after the battery passes the 90% physically it starts making rapid drops until it stabilizes somewhere around 50%.

I noticed something weird on my galaxy s3. Whenever i charge my device till 100% and take it off from charger, it goes down to 99% immediatly. I thought it could be a bug in my current rom so i flashed another one. But the buf still exists. I even changed kernels. Still same problem. I am running latest foxhound rom

Is there any solution for this bug?
Hope someone can help me.

It is not a bug, that's how it is made.
If the phone charged to 100% and sat there for a long time, the battery would lose charge cycles and life faster. So what it does, is one of two things:
It will either NEVER actually charge to 100%, or
It will charge to 100%, take itself off the charger to about 95%, and then charge again to 100%, over and over.
HTC does the second one, I think the S3 does the first.
Thanks for the answer.
I didnt know that. Its just so weird because on every of my previous phones the battery stayed on 100%.

I know, I don't like it either haha. Some phones will even say "100%" right off the charger even if they're not actually at 100%, which is why sometimes you see people that take their phone off the charger at 100% and a few minutes later they are at 95, etc.
There have been a lot of questions about this in sammy roms, and also in the s1. And it got me thinking about it this way.
As soon as you disconnect the phone from the charger it's dropped to 99%. But in my head, I say it has had to have even used the most minimal amount of juice and is 'technically' no longer at 100%.
Some are saying other phones are reporting batteries on 100% for up to an hour after disconnecting from the charger. That might look great, but there is no way that is correct either, because it has to have used some juice in that hour.
Maybe samsung don't like pandering to the needs of the masses re battery use reporting. Maybe sammy is the only one reporting a correct level.
Me, I don't care. My phone lasts just fine. Are you getting better battery life than your last phone? Haven't I read that the 1x has ordinary battery life? Does it's percentage stay at 100% for a long time? If so, that would be a bit of a rip off to me.
I know sammy have included the option to show the battery percentage within the settings of the s3. I don't use it, and my battery indicator stays at 100% until the battery reaches about 90%. Works for me.
Batteries never charge to 100% anyways to avoid the battery over-charging and exploding

Charge stops at 54%
Hi,
My SIII e fully stock and a few days now it does not charge past 54%. i tried to drain the battery completely and charge it after ant same thing happened. I can leave it overnight charging and it stops at 54%. Any solutions?
Thanks,
I just got a Samsung Battery Charger/Stand with Battery & have just charged the new battery with it, swapped it for the old one that had just run out when I noticed something weird...
The new battery was showing up as 100% for about 15 minutes. During which time I had the screen on for 3 minutes at full brightness.
What does that mean??
I've never seen 100% for any more than a second after I've unplugged the phone.
I'm assuming there's some difference between the batteries and the stats that are in the phone for the battery. I've used the Battery Calibration app before, when changing roms on my old phone, and that would sort out little anomalies. Do I need to use battery calibration every time I switch batteries?
Will this work itself out?
Will this swapping negatively affect my phone in anyway?
I thank you in advance for your help/suggestions
The phone has logic to not let the battery charge to 100% for too long. The charger does not. Battery calibration apps do nothing.

Does this full/drain cycle sound like a good idea to you? Would you have drained the battery from new to empty? Same thing, right? As long as there is a pattern to touch the empty and full ends?
