Ram issue - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On my sgs3 my ram goes down to 150mb or lower. Cause issues with apex. I get a black screen than is loading my apps or home screen. Im using smart ram booster at moment. Which is helping but only get 250 -350 mb. Ive tryed deboater on play store. But just wondering if any else had issue. Or could some1 suggest a good custom rom or a mod that will help with ram. Thanks

[Q] Average free RAM in cm9?

Hello
Would any one be kind enough to tell me/post a screen shot the average free RAM you get if all the apps are closed? My stock gives me around 580mb used all the time with no apps running apart from light flow which doesn't show up in active applications. So I'm guessing touch whiz is a resource hog.

Most ram free for JellyBean

Which ROM has the most available ram? I would really like to know because on CM10, I get like 80mb idle.

Helly bean gives me 100-120 mb of ram with min apps
slimbean given me up to 150 - 120 ram

Just wondering why you want free ram? I remember reading somewhere that android runs better with most of the ram used and that theres really little reason to skimp on ram usage..
Just my opinion

I've read that too somewhere, however I've found that post to be incorrect. In fact, the less free RAM I have available, the slower my device gets and the music lags as well. I think that Android actually runs worse with less ram free.
Anyway, that isn't the point here. Back to OP. On slimbean, I can get between. 150 - 180 MB of RAM available. Total RAM is 392 on semaphore 2.0.7sv.
Helly Bean:
Just noticed, 20+ hours since last charge/reboot with 47% battery (1800 MAh) remaining!

If you wanna keep a lot of free ram just go in to (system settings/developer options/) and then check (dont keep activities) it will free a lot of memory, but one thing I notice is when I open the browser and watch a video, when I go back to to the browser, it send me back to my homepage of the browser, so I dont know if that is gonna be a problem with you...

Alternatively you could set background process limit to 2, or even 1.

CM 10 - RAM usage

Hello,
I would like to discuss and ask why the newest rom from cyanogenmod team, cm10, is using a lot of RAM om the galaxy s2.
By a lot, I mean buckets of RAM. If you look at your app management settings you will see that it uses up to 630+ of MegaBytes!! And the phone itself only has about 1 GB of it. Because of this heavy usage of the memory the phone gets laggy, the smoothness of the whole system is terrorized by this heavily usage of RAM memory.
The only option is to reset the phone and then the usage goes back to normal again.
Could someone explain why this is?

There memory leak in CM10. it's a known bug, that's why it's still in beta.
The only way you can fix this is:
1. by using a Ram manager
or
2. By using a patched services.jar for your ROM, made by Dorimanx
Hi,
I have the same RAM problems, i'll try the fixed services. Thanks

Whats the problem mate. There are still plenty of free ram. Like 150+ mb free. Android likes to not clean out everyrhimg evertime you leave a program. It makes it faster to reopen them. Its not a bug, its a feature.

No after my ram is 650mb + my home screen shut down so every time I press home button the home screen restarts
Takes about 5 secs to go to home screen

What firmware are you on? i think that home issue was fixed sometime ago..?
Android likes to use all the RAM available, it isn't your normal windows PC where FREE ram is better.. On Android, free RAM is wasted RAM.
Three things:
1.) Listen to these guys.
2.) Uninstall memory booster and other retarded, memory related apps.
3.) Search before posting.
That is all.

Update to XXDLIB Jelly Bean ROM. Use ODIN. You have 833 MB total RAM and the redraws issue is gone.
And yes, you need to search. Google is your best friend, you know.

Have no redraw at all... if your rooted think about removing kiesexe. If not turn off ripple effect that also helps

If you're under Windows (XP/7), you'll see in performance tab in task manager that most of your physical memory is not free, it's either used by programs or 'cache'.
Most of great operating systems do this, they cache something in free RAM so you'll take much less time opening a process. But in Android it doesn't show 'Available RAM' which is RAM that can be used for 'more process', it just show 'free RAM' whereas it's neither used by a process or cache.
Judge by the above sentences, free RAM is wasted RAM.
You are right but my home screen shuts down because other application. Takes more ram
And according to my task manager Facebook And chrome are most ram consuming Bo sum upto in 150+mb

The issue isn't because you are using more RAM, well kinda.
The system will close other apps to free RAM, the issue with the old stock firmwares, the Launcher can be removed by this and that causes the redraw.
Could be easily fixed.
RAM issue persistent
Galaxy S3 is my first Android smartphone. I jumped the boat [from iPhone] because I was blown away by my brother's S2. I spent nights playing with his phone when he got it (15 months ago). But boy Galaxy S3 got serious problem, with RAM. I don't buy "free RAM is wasted RAM". Apps don't stay in background, launcher redraws, phone gets sluggish, notification shade takes multiple seconds to respond to pull-down. iPhone didn't had any of these problems. Heck S2 don't have any of these problems. There's something seriously wrong with Galaxy S3's RAM management. I'm running 4.2.1 official Samsung firmware, its worse than ever. I really hope they improve the architecture on Galaxy S4. Other than that, and horrible battery life, the things this phone does is incredible. But its getting pretty annoying now, to constantly reboot the phone to clear the RAM.

Won't really care if you don't believe in science. If you're really desperate to free RAM, disable some system apps you don't use. Android manufacturers do have a tendency to overload their phones with too many features no one needs.

why not just go to recent apps>task manager>ram>clear memory?
sent from where i'm at.
I used to have the redraw problem with all my launchers.
Rooted my s3, put V6 supercharger script to work, it does wonders!
No more redraw (I mean really, 0 redraws in 1 month, heavy ram usage!)
Try it!

To be honest, I don't know why you're using such such (I'll put it as nice as possible) bad... app. Every Facebook for Android user knows that the app's no good. I suggest you get a different one (I've forgotten the app they mentioned in the portal post.. :silly
There's no coming around the fact that you've "only" got ca. 700MB free RAM at any one time. Especially if you're using stock Sammy ROMs. You have to think about all the features they implemented, and especially their heavily bloated T-Wiz interface. I mean, it's really nice and all that, but it just nerfs the actual potential of the hardware. I suggest getting a custom ROM and/or a custom kernel. (And Chainfire's Trangle Away app)
Hope I could help!

Well keep looking. Not the first RAM question. Unused RAM is wasted RAM ;so don't worry about how much you have left. It's TouchWiz what you expect

Go here I explain a little..You want ram working for..Rather u have 70% ram used or 99% it will still function the same as apps in ram consime no cpu usage. Touchwiz is smartly placing common phone functions in ram for the user to have when needed. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2733344
