[Q] Samsung Galaxy S3 heat issues - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I bought my first smartphone a month ago which was a sensation xe. I had to return it multiple times as it got way too hot. I just purchased a Galaxy S3 and I was wondering if the the warmth it emits is normal. I am experiencing temperatures from 35-40 while browsing the net and temperatures from 38-44 while playing graphic intensive games like Riptide. I was wondering if these temperatures are in the normal range. It gets pretty warm but not super hot. I am not tech savvy like most of the members here so I have no idea about ROM's or underclocking. Is my S3 normal or am I just overreacting because of my bad experience with the Sensation?

It'll get warm when you play demanding games (or rather, high-end considering nothing is demanding to this phone ). This is coming from a former S2 and Galaxy Nexus owner. It's because it's plastic.

what app do u use to see the temperatures?

Thanks Product F(RED). Do you own an S3? Do you see similiar temperatures? Do you think temperatures in the high thirties are okay for just browsing?
And to see the temperatures download an app the tests for battery temperature. Just go to the play store.

Yeah, I have the international in 16GB, Marble White. The only complaint I have about this phone is the camera sucks balls compared to the S2. Seriously, there are no details in the pictures. But back to your issue, it'll get warm if I play Shadowgun or GTA III. Not HOT, but warm.

Playing gta3 or nova3 or any other high demanding game will push it up to not much past 40c, I mean actual temperature of the device, not sensor values. This kind of temperature is expected from high demand apps and is not unique to the sgs3. The plastic casing probably doesn't help much either (metal would sink the heat and disapate quicker).
Even if you got it up to 50c then it would still be safe, maybe uncomfortable to hold but safe.
The device that 'exploded' that everyone is getting worked up about probably has the in car charger to blame. The cheaper ones aren't usually protected from surges, or the curent isn't regulated as well as better ones.

That's because the Wifi antenna is sending and receiving a constant stream of data and the CPU and screen are working their asses off to run your game (the screen can get very warm).
Bottom line is, the phone might get very warm, but it shouldn't be scolding hot.

So basically I have nothing to worry about? I understand it getting that warm while playing games but it is normal for my phone to get this warm while browsing? As I am talking to you guys now my phone has been hovering between 36 and 40 degrees.. I mean its warm but not uncomfortably so. Thanks for helping out you guys are awesome. On a side note how did you find gta3 I looked on game hub and the play store but no luck

I don't know about others, but I have the nvidia drivers installed via Chainfire3D and the market fixed to allow tegra games.

Probably not available in your country if you're not in the US.

Same here, got it on the longest day deals ( search for it in the play store) For 1$ using the chain fire market fix.
About the heat, yes its normal, while browsing the phone can get quite warm, guess the quad core is to blame here

Hey guys I'm back. I was wondering about underclocking or rom. I am pretty tech-illiterate so I dont know what this all means. But basically I am wondering if this will make my phone run cooler? If I do this does it void my warranty? Is there any way a newbie like myself could do it?
thanks!

i've bever gone over 43-45c by using shiya kernel. Im keeping the cpu at 800mhz when gpu clocks are at max. I dont have any lagg even if i cap the cpu to the shiya default 500mhz but yea... before when the cpu was running at 1200mhz as samsung default and gpu at max also my device got really hot :/ i'd call it desing flaw..

Is that possibly related to a sharpness setting buried somewhere, perhaps? I've seen a similar comment about fewer details on some reviews, but they noted that the overall pictures still looked very good.

How do I get these kernels? Like I said I am new to all this and I really don't understand how to do it or even the pros and cons of customizing things like that. I mean didn't we buy this phone because it's so fast? Why slow it down? Does it really make a big difference in the heat or battery life? And most Importantly does it void your warranty? Excuse my ignorance on these matters and thanks for you help

No, they're really really bad. View this post on a computer, not your phone or tablet.
S2: If you click to see the full sized pictures, you can see, for example, my friend's face (the girl) very clearly even fully zoomed. You can see every feature and it's not muddy.

Curiously, the camera recording at 1080p gets a LOT of detail, what the photo quality SHOULD be like. So I'm thinking and praying this is a software issue because this is going to be the phone I talk on vacation.

Those S2 pictures do have rather impressive detail at full size.
The samples you showed all seem to be 72dpi, but different sizes per phone (i.e., the S2 shots are markedly bigger) - would be nice to compare shots from both phones with same photo settings and subject.

Prime C3 Model Testing

Just got my 3rd Prime and this would be my second C3 (first I had was C1)
Thankfully there is no lightbleeding and no dead pixels or white-freaking spots.
Wifi is just like before, I haven't tested it from a far distance yet.
Inside I get 65Mbps
GPS is crap as usual, in my balcony it finds 1 satellite but does not lock.
Will try more outside later.
Camera has been good pretty much from the beginning but i feel it could be improved.
I like that you can zoom in 1080p now.
Have had the unit for about 48 hours and it has rebooted 3 times.
Was so ****ing stupid that I did not root before the latest OTA .21
All in all it feels pretty solid and the Prime is awesome, I hope Asus will eventually release firmwares that make full use of the CPU's Full Potential.
Browser is OK, but it crashes every now and then but you can resume your previous windows so that's cool I don'http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=986740&stc=1&d=1333731891t remember this existing before .21
OkI! Just sharing!
Edit: Speed test via Prime,
Edit: April 6, Testing.
Information about Battery Life so far with the C3:
At the moment my battery stats are 19 hours and 11 minutes, and battery time left is 57% (See Image).
My image settings has been at around 70% with IPS+ on sometimes on and off, maybe 20% of the time.
I have downloaded heavy files maybe 3,4 or four of them.
I've watched HD youtube flicks, transfered files to ext.HDD, taken pictures and experimented with the camera functions.
I've done ALOT of surfing.
I have also downloaded and deleted apps, tested Shadowgun, and some other games.
I have skyped quite a bit, I have filmed as well.
I've tried the HDMI out connection.
I have sent and received many emails.
I've switched from Normal to Performance mode many time for testing and for faster browsing or general speed But honestly I dont see much differene). NEED TO ROOT!!!
I have done a lot and am happy with the performance (although it ca be tweaked and the the battery will last less but I don't really care to surf or use my machine for than 5 hours at a time.
My prime has been connected with the Dock but not constantly, I took the Surfpad off the dock at least 4 times.
Im pretty happy so far with my Pime and I am not rooted and running .21
EDIT: I am still not done and the battery is at 35% and i've sending images via dropbox and other ****.

Information about Wi-Fi range so far with the C3:
Wifi is not bad and I have never experienced much problems with it but I decided to do a test anyways, in the picture below you can see a building in which I live on the third floor, and I took it from the ground just outside of the building door entrance. And the wifi was not strong at all haha as you can see in the picture but I was connected and was pretty stable.
Distance I would have to be in meters is maybe 8 or 10 meters?
That in Feet is 26 or 32 feet.
Building is concrete.
GPS Info:
While I was outside I thought why not test the GPS while im there, so I tested and I WAS F-ING suprised!
At first the GPS Status tool started showing 3 Satellites (no biggie i thought).
So at first it was showing 3, then 7 then a fix and then more, see images.
FIX!
Good Fix!
And more!
First Fix with Wi-Fi OFF
And some more after that, I ran around abit (my neighbours probably thought I was insane LOL) to see how stable the signal was once fixed, these are images taken while lightly running around:
Well I hope this info helps, its seems the Prime is perhaps underestimated?
Also, I am still using it Will take one last snapshot before the battery dies
Some comments on the hardware externally, the dock buttons feels different from the first and second Prime this one the C3 has more smooth button material, the other ones were more rubbery (Which I thought was better). It could be my imagination.
Then there is the backplate, the first one had a more 'flat' surface somewhat similar to the iPad, the second was slightly less 'flat' but on this Prime the backplate is more curved (Again I could be imagining this but I doubt it), there is not 'flat' square in the overall shape that I remember from the first the C1 model.
Any comments are welcomed and I hope this info helped.
Cheers!

Do you have a pair of Bluetooth headphones? Stream a movie with Diceplayer .mkv and sync headphones with your bluetooth. See if audio is in sync on the .mkv movies thru the bluetooth headphones. Mine is working fine for the C2 prime i have. But, some say that even with the new CX models they are still having the Bluetooth fallout issue.
Thanks!
Not sure I do, I rarely ever use bluetooth earphone.
I will see if I can test it and come back with the results.

How is the color temperature of your screen? I got a C2 from BestBuy and a C3 from Amazon.com. The C2 is slightly blueish and the C3 is yellowish. I pre-ordered another from Amazon hoping to get another C3 with a better screen, but was curious how your C3's screen is.

Color is fine, I've never given it any thought, I only know that sometimes the screen is bright sometimes after watching a movie, but I noticed that if I go back to player used and turn the brightness down the 'colors' are more vivid and not overly bright.
Could be a SW problem, I know that my last 2 units had this issue.

How heavy is the lightbleed?
You have a right to return if you have it in general, but if its alot and bright then you can surely get a new one.
I'm sure the C4 will be interesting, I might change because I still have lightbleeding even though everything is fine, you have to get the most of your money and this machine is not ridiculously cheap.
Maybe those C4's will be better or maybe even C5 by now.

well , it's not heavy yet, but it wasn't there in the beggining i guess. i only notice it when using black background or app with dark coloured theme, which is to say i prefer dark desktops/homescreens/apps. it's becoming more and more noticeable. i have no complains on mine, other that wifi could be just a bit better and this light bleed. my fear is that it will only get worse, like i've seen people describe around here.
i would like to get a newer model, sure, i'll just explain the situation to the store where i bought it. got it the 23rd march. maybe RMA works, who knows, might get lucky.

I think there are C4's out now so when you talk to your shop of purchase, TELL them that you would like a C4, I am on my 3rd Prime and main reason I returned the previous 2 was because of whitee spots, dead pixels and heavy lightbleeding.

Galaxy S II or Galaxy S III?

I'm looking for a new device to replace my Galaxy S I and either one of these will be upgrades, but I want to see if the GSII can actually fulfill my needs. If I buy a GS II I'd only expect it to last a couple of years before I make the jump to something even more superior in like 2014, but if it's a GSIII, I hope it's a long term investment and last me at least 3 years.
I use my phone mainly as a web browser, camera, and for all my social integration stuff (emails, facebook, etc.). I watch videos on my phone a lot, and I've got like 80 GBs of Asian dramas and tv shows waiting to be loaded on my phone. Frustratingly my GSI can only handle 720p so I could only play the 720p ones but I'm sure either the GS2 or 3 can play even 1080p mkvs.
Thus, the most important aspects of a smartphone for me include the Screen, the Camera, speed, and durability.
Here are the pros and cons I weighed out:
Pro GS2:
Much more compact
RGB instead of Pentile
Literally indestructible
Con GS2:
Quite a few cases of "screen burn"
Shorter battery life
Pro GS3:
720p instead of WVGA
Better CPU, GPU, and almost everything else
Longer battery life
Con GS3:
Quite large IMO, not sure if I'd be happy holding it for a long duration
Relatively easy to break, + - same level as the iPhone 4/4s
So what do you guys say? Would the GSII suffice for my video watching needs or would the GS III be a much better choice if I want to use my phone that way?
Hi, I have the galaxy s2 and I am getting the s3. I don't recommend you get the s2, even though it is good cpu & gpu wise the screen, to be blunt, is crap in my opinion. I have to admit I was unnerved about the size of the screen on the s3, and all I can tell you to do is go to the shop and play with it. For me the screen was no where near as big as I thought it would be and was no longer an issue after playing around with it. I could touch everything with one hand. (I am 6'2 with decent sized hands)
The s3 is massively more future proof than the s2, so it could be a better investment of money. Also, I can't stress enough the amount more detail you could see on a pentile 720p screen than my wvga rgb s2 screen, for me that made me want to buy the phone alone. I'm not going to sugar coat it, if you look quite close you can make out the signs of pentile and see pixels. But from a usable distance it was so much more clear and crisp than my s2.
I should also mention the amount of people I have seen on xda saying how they dropped the s2 form wast height and it smashed. The s2 isn't as strong as people make it out to be. For the s3 I believe the drop testes weren't very controlled. As in one it survived being throw into the air and on to the floor, yet it didn't survive from a simple small height drop. I would just recommend you buy a case that protects the corners of the s3, like a tpu one that are really cheap.
Lastly, after I played around with the s3 it made my s2 feel laggy. I couldn't believe android device could be so smooth, and it did feel quite a bit faster. Overall, I honestly believe you should get the s3 over the s2 if money isn't a problem, and if it is bare in mind the s3 should be more future proof and you may not need to upgrade as fast as if you got the s3. I hope this helps you is some way.
Edit: Should mention, I was in a phone shop today, comparing my s2 next to the s3 for quite a while to make sure I actually like the s3. Also, look wise I thought the s3 was ugly and not a patch on the one x from the press photos and reviews. But after having it in my hand my first thought is that it looked beautiful, and I actually prefer it now to the one x, and it fitted so snugly in my hand next to my s2 and the one x. Photos don't do the phone justice, the phone looks so nice in life in my opinion of course.
Also, the s3 had a notification light and the s2 doesn't. I know the s1 also doesn't have one but coming from my old htc desire, I missed the notification light so much and I think if you got the s3 you may find you won't want a phone without one. Although I have to admit I really didn't like the color of the blue one at all, I have never had a white phone, but I really loved the white s3's.
For video watching the s2 is no good, the wvga screen just makes everything looks so soft and kind of lifeless. The s3's screen also had a lot less glare meaning, it should be nicer to watch videos on, and the much better battery is a massive plus for video watching.
While I don't own a SGS2 (only the SGS1 and SGS3) I've played around enough with my gf's SGS2 to give a somewhat accurate comparison.
Both phones match your requirements just fine.
The SGS2 is beefy enough to provide enough CPU/GPU performance for casual games in the coming years and should get updates and fixes at least through community-support (I strongly recommend Cyanogenmod with Siyah-Kernel) for a long time to come.
It's true that the SGS3's size is quite large, but whether it's too large depends on your hands. I can reach any spot on the screen (except the notification-area which requires a bit of stretching) just fine, while my gf is unable to use it one-handed.
Go to your local shop and try fiddling around. Either it matches or it doesn't; you won't get used to an oversized screen.
Now to your question regarding app usage; I'd recommend the SGS3 over the SGS2 big time. While the SGS2 runs your apps just fine, the SGS3 is able to really switch between them easily and browsing with the Chrome Beta is just as fast as on your desktop browser.
The SGS2 sometimes feels sluggish especially with larger websites, multiple tabs or while running other stuff in the background.
Additionally the SGS3's larger screen REALLY works wonders when surfing the web, it requires far less scrolling around than SGS1 or even SGS2.
Software-features such as hovering multimedia player could possibly be backported to the SGS2, and I haven't used them add all yet so I'll not comment on their usefulness.
The SGS2's camera is MP-wise identical to the SGS3's, however the latter has FAR faster reaction times. However in comparisons with CM9's camera-app on SGS2 to the SGS3's stock camera, the SGS2 wins big time in image quality and fidelity. E.g. the SGS3 shows a large aura around a TV-set in a darkened room and the on-screen image is really fuzzy while the SGS2 shows a clear and clean image.
But that could be due to software-limitations; Samsung has never be known for their good software-capabilities, but rather their excellent and usually very endurable hardware.
Screen burn-in could -and most certainly will- be an issue on the SGS3 like on the Note since both use a very similar screen (minus the Wacom digizier).
It simply is a problem with all light sources including CRT screens and even LCD. You just don't see it on LCD's and Beamers because the actual light source is not on a per-pixel base but covers a large area.
However the average screen burn-in is not noticeable in everyday-usage. My (nearly) 2year old heavily-used SGS1 which was used as night-stand clock and showed instant messaging chats for hours has yet to show any important distortions.
Depending on your country and carrier you'll get 2 years warranty; if nothing big has shown by then you got a good unit.
I can't say anything on durability (yet ) but depending on how you use and treat it, that should not be a big issue with any device.
If you don't treat it like a Nokia 3410/3510 but like the 580$ high-end smartphone it is, it will survive. It's gotten Gorilla Glas II afaik, so the screen _SHOULD_ survive most drops.
Thanks for the comments guys, very detailed and helpful posts!
I was wondering if the S2 would be future proof enough but from your comments I guess probably not. I just want a phone that is lag free and does whatever I want it to do (software wise) provided it's not something like computing the 100,000th digit of Pi in 3 seconds.
My hands are of medium size (probably medium-large for Asians), spanning 22cms from my thumb to my pinky. I've yet to find a local store here in UK near where I live with the GSIII in stock so I didn't have the chance to fiddle around with it, but I've held my friend's Galaxy Nexus with a case and it felt quite manageable.
However, I'm sure I won't be able to 1 hand operate the GS3 like I can with my GS1 (oh, the joys of swype!), but that wouldn't be that big of a problem as I don't think I'll risk holding the GS3 and using it 1 handed!
Mine span the equal length, so I'd say you're good to go.
The S2 is as future-proof as it can be for your need. If you're willing to shill out the approx. 100-150Euro for a S3 with a 2year subscription I'd say go for it.
I'm using my S3 one-handed nearly all the time, especially when walking the dog.
So far no issues, however I've ordered a case with extra grip in case my dog tries to hunt some wildlife and I fly/slide behind.
Since my language (luxembourgish) is not Swype-supported (and most certainly never will be), I've come to love Messagease (freeware). Sure, it takes some time to learn but it can be used one-handed with very high accuracy.
Thanks for the help mate.
I really wish the GS3 can actually last me longer than my GS1. I had the prospect of it lasting me for 3-4 years with good performance and it started to lag on the 2nd day when I tried to use a live wallpaper. Hope it's a different story with the GS3...and I'd love to get my hands on the S4+2GB RAM variant if possible (but Hong Kong only seems to be selling the international version).
i had an s2 and when you use the s3 for a few days then go back to the s2 you can tell how much clearer and better the screen looks on the s3 its amazing
movies looks fantastic
I love my s2 but plan to wait for the upcoming nexus devices and see what they have to offer before jumping ship to my next device. While there are differences in the s2 & s3 they are not glaring enough to make me want to switch this very moment. It's going to take more for me to put my gs2 to sleep, much more not slightly more. Google better bring it with the next nexus line of devices or I'll be waiting even longer.

In one ERA the S2 was a legend,,,, That doesnt mean that now its outdated... When compared to other phones which r single core its far better in performance and screen clarity... S3 is a new one, if u doubt give some months then see the development here and buy s3.... S3 specs r too gud.. But for me S2 gave a gud battery life(~1-2 days), dropped it twice.. And yes the processor burns like hell in S2.. Unless ur using it in cool room.. It all depends on ur taste and budget.... Eagerly waiting for S4 in future.. which may come after 1.5-2 years later

lag in games

Anyone else notice that gameplay on the Nexus 10 is a tad laggy? I tried playing GTA Vice last night on just 80% resolution and it plays very well and smooth, but the frame rates drop every 10 second to about 5fps for a few seconds, then restores back to smooth gameplay. Similar lag in NFSMW where it lags up every 15 secs. Anyone else experience this on their N10? Perhaps its because of the lack of optimization but then it does run smoothly for a while before the lag kicks in? Anyone has an explanation for ways to fix it?
Tested on both stock kernel and Linaro-based kernel by kToonz
This has been discussed in length many times, the processor is just throttling down
and do you know any way oft fixing it?

As of now you cannot. The closest to it is flashing manta kernel in original development section if you have a custom rom/rooted. He has disabled it personally but wont release that version as of today to the public for fear of people burning up their chips. I actually hope he does anyway as I know how you feel. This device has so much potential and I love it and Im just hoping Google is still optimizing the sh*t out of this device with their next REAL update. (Not that 4.2.1 crap of an update......although needed if you like December)
With their next update I really hope they focus on this throttling aspect of the device and crank up the speed in games as the launcher and overall speed of browsing is the best I've ever experienced with Android as of yet. Did I mention that display is beautiful. (C'mon Voodoo Color and Sound)

Has anybody tried heatsinking the SoC? The Exy5 is a bare chip, so a thermal-conductive pad to attach it to the EMF shield, and a low-profile sink on top of that?

I actually had this idea in mind for a while now... I don't have a suction tool to separate the screen from the backing though :/
I have never thought that Google could release a crap like 4.2.x. Few useless features, terrible battery usage (Nexus 4 is noticeable worse than Opt G http://blog.gsmarena.com/google-nex...-test-see-if-its-better-than-the-galaxy-nexus) and benchmark (actually reviews said that there were some hipcups - the thing you cannot see on Opt G)
Anw, I ordered them (both N4 and N10) coz they are great devices, but still expecting something better than crap 4.2 from Google.
>I don't have a suction tool
2.5" Mini Suction Cup $2.97 free shipping
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-2-5-Min...lass-Metal-Lifter-Locking-Quick-/400356409544
Add: BTW, for chipheads who want to know more about Exy 5 internals, Sammy has a 5MB "user manual" just for you. Sadly it's above my pay grade:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/product/application/detail?productId=7668
Exy 5 specs specify it coming in two forms: SCP (single-chip packaging) and POP (package-on-package). Both are housed in FCFBGA packaging, which I'm assuming to mean "flip-chip fine ball-grid array".
I perused through this, as unlike your regular CPU w/ a heat dissipator, the packaging is plastic, and I don't know how well it conducts heat. Heat would be conducted through the BGA interface, so you may need to heatsink the underside(?)
Anyway, for hardcore gamers who are (literally) getting throttled, should be worth the hour-long project. Remember to do it while still within your return period.
I have played NFS MW as well as Asphalt 7 and haven't noticed any lags, at least not yet. I read a few posts referencing a background app (Facebook, etc.) causing this issue. Don't know how widespread it is......

Ill try it out and get back to everyone if I can find a good and easy(ish) way to dissemble my device. I would also extend it over the RAM chip next to the CPU too
EDIT. The above picture is actually false. There is a heatsink over the whole area (processor is on the right in this image):
Doesnt look like any TIM though, maybe we could improve temps by putting some thermal interface material in so that better heat transfer happens between the chip and the aluminum plate
I will have to look closely myself, but I may add a very large aluminum plate in anyway. It depends how much clearance I can get away with between the back cover and the rest of the device. I may be able to add in a 1/16" thick plate to just help a bit more with spreading heat and also strength of the device (not that it feels weak to me). This would probably bulge out the back a tiny bit and make the device 1 or 2 mm thicker, and also add a few ounces of weight too. The heat difference might be worth it though
Noticed this as well. Definitely down for trying whatever craziness someone else finds to work.

Tested in ktoonz's kernel in performance mode. Same issue occurred. I would have thought that a custom kernel set in performance mode does not throttle down as badly as the stock kernel?? Correct me if I'm wrong

Definitely not facebooks/auto update issues...I tested it on ParanoidAndroid stock without Facebook app or gmail sync...even tested in airplane mode, yet the result was the same as stock with gmail and notification sync on.

Yep you are wrong
There can be a few things that affect heat output in the kernel at the same core frequency and voltage, but the majority of its power consumption and heat output come from those two main points, voltage and frequency. Even on the custom kernel you are running the same on both, so you will still have throttling problems. And set to performance is making the throttling happen sooner because you are locking the CPU into its maximum voltage and frequency slot with no time to slow down when it doesnt need to run as fast.

Thank you for clearing it up. I read the thread about governors and thought that performance meant CPU is throttled to full clock speed under load
The problem can be solved. check it out
Would turning on Anti-Aliasing work? I don't have my tablet on me at the moment but you can try it. Turn on your developer options if you haven't already (go to settings, go all the way down to about tablet and tap the build number 7 times (after 3 or 4 taps it will say turning on developer options in 4 taps and it counts down). Once its on you can find the developers options on the left. Select that and you should be able to find something that says "Force 4x MSAA" and check it on. Idk if it will do anything though.
Turning on an option to make the GPU work harder seems counter-intuitive to me. But who knows, I suppose anything is possible
Has anyone tested Vice City on the Nexus 10? How's the performance? My brother has it on his iPad 3 and it lags. Wondering if performance on the Nexus 10 is any better.
the N10 is not optimized for its screen resolution
simple as that.
that is with constant low fps as it seems to be for many games.

Thinking of buying this tablet

I currently have an iPad 4 and a Nexus 7. Both of which perform very well and I'm very happy with.
I am looking at this tablet for one reason - Waterproof. I bought a Lifeproof case for my iPad and it turned it into a bulky monster that sucks to use. Mostly because I have a hot tub and like to listen to music and browse the web while in the tub.
I understand that battery life isn't that great, it's not the fastest or best processor, doesn't run the latest Android version and doesn't have the sharpest screen - does this at all become an issue in day to day use?
So, have there been any issues with the waterproofing of this device?
I've done some searching and it's hit and miss on what people think. I find it's a pricey tablet compared to the specs, but like I said, waterproofing is the feature I really life.
Thanks all.

I think you should not buy it, unless you have lots of money for no good use. The Xperia Tablet Z is a great device. The battery is great. It lasts a whole day for me, including heavy WiFi usages and reading many pdfs. The processor indeed isn't the best, but I rarely have any slowdowns.
The latest Android version isn't much needed on it, and it behaves without a single bug whatsoever. It is coming soon, though... The screen doesn't have the biggest resolution and thus the biggest PPI, but it is really sharp and great. I don't have any problems with it, and the viewing angles are great... It is just a bit too reflexive under direct sunlight, but I use it a lot on low brightness, so that's the reason.
The waterproof is a great feature, and works perfectly, but because of the touchscreen technology (capacitative), it goes crazy with water on it. Dropping water on it makes it think you are touching the screen, and submerging it makes it crazy, as pressure is being applied all the screen.
The speakers are muffy when they have water on it, so unless you hold the device the other way around and does not submerge the other half, you're good. If you are going to use headphones, get some waterproof ones and connect them via Bluetooth, because you can risk both the tablet and the headphones by putting the cables underwater as when the covers are opened they aren't waterproof.
Thanks for the info. it wouldn't be submerged for use, just in my hands in the tub (and it's lighter than an iPad, so that's a bonus). I use my iPad with the case and I know what you mean about going crazy when wet. Every now and then, I just dip it to get some of the puddles off it and that seems to help.
I'd also likely sell the iPad to recover some cost (and the lifeproof case was $130 - ouch).
I've read a ton of reviews and they tend to mirror the issues I mentioned. Did the 4.2 update improve things like wifi reception or any other improvements?

I can't say much about 4.1.2 and any of their issues because I bought the device and it shipped with 4.1.2, but I was in NY for a few days and the hotel's WiFi wasn't good, so couldn't test it. First thing I did when I got home was updating it. But i have no signal problems whatsoever. Mine is a SGP311, if that makes any difference...
I'll just chime in here with the same info that's already been provided by others; battery life in use is decent. I use mine only periodically, but when I use it I rarely pay the battery any attention, and never have had any trouble with WiFi reception. I don't have the biggest house, but I have used it all over the house without any problems. I've also used it outside without any trouble where my mobile phone will not pick up any WiFi signal.
My main gripe with the tablet is that it seems to use quite a bit of battery when I'm not using it. But that is probably caused by something I have installed. Haven't really bothered investigating.

I have the same thing on my mind with cwepruk. I'm planning to buy this tab also and have a lot of research with the pros and cons. In fact I have a lot of vids downloaded from youtube about comparisons and reviews. But because of the six months period since its release, I have second thoughts of buying and afraid that maybe in few days/weeks, better tablet is coming. (Sigh) i just don't know....

I purchased the kindle fire hdx a couple days ago. It has great hardware, feels a bit flimsy, but overall a nice build. The blinding problem is the software. I didnt realize how much I missed not having the Google play store. Sideloading apps works, but its a pain considering how much easier the Google play store is.
Even after I rooted the kindle, it still was not a lot of fun to use.
Anyways, I returned the Kindle and got the Sony Z instead. I'm very happy with the choice. The Sony has a nicer feel and build, the screen is comparable, and the software is superb.
The Kindle is grest if you use Amazons services, otherwise I would go with the Sony.

Yes I read about that, without prime it's just not a very good choice, and I think amazon prime is 80 dollars a year right?

The difference between both is bigger than that, but the S4 Pro works like a champ. Didn't had any problems with it. Putting my XTZ next to my Xperia S with a S3, the difference is huge...

So I went ahead and bought it. Like I said, the main reason was because it's waterproof and I can use it in the hot tub (browsing, music, etc.).
It was on sale, so $400 instead of the usual $500. IMO, it's about a $350 tablet hardware wise, but it's the only one that is waterproof. The new Android tablets do have better screens and faster processors and some of them are running 4.3. I'm not a big gamer, so I don't really get into pushing the limits on graphics.
That said - after one day of use, I'm pretty happy. Initial thoughts:
Pros -
- Even though it's not the best screen, it's quite good and better then I expected after most reviews.
- Light and thin
- While not the most current hardware, it's definitely respectable. It doesn't feel super fast, but it also never felt slow. It's comparable with my iPad 4.
- Decent battery life. Heavy use this weekend yesterday including streaming audio, browsing, setting everything up, it lasted from Sat night until this (Mon) morning with about 7 hours of on screen time.
Cons
- It's flimsy. I took the first one back because it creaked and the screen would distort and have phantom touches. The replacement was a bit better, but will still have phantom touches if you hold it by the corner.
- Too many notifications from the tablet itself. I don't want to use stamina mode, stop reminding me.
- For all the hype about the camera, it's pretty mediocre - not a big deal for a tablet though.
- No Wireless charging. Would be great and eliminate the need to use that flap over the micro-usb
I've tried other Android tablets, the first Galaxy Tab and the Asus Transformer Infinity and I didn't like either and both had some bugs, so far, not the case with the Sony.

My goodbye.

Just wanted to stop in and thank all of you for all the amazing support given by you guys in this forum. This isn't a bashing forum to say "I'm going to a different phone because this phone now sucks" or anything like that. This is still an amazing phone, I just decided that I wanted to upgrade for more features and a better (faster) camera since I have a 2 year old brother who I am constantly taking photos of. Again, thanks for all the amazing developers and other users who have answered my questions without hesitation, I wish the best for you all! On to the Galaxy S5 thread it is for me!

I have, however moved (when it's delivered tonorow) to the Z2. I don't know why I have fallen in love with it, but I have.
On the other side, the Z2 is going to have to be an amazing phone to live up to the G2. Never ever ever ever, would I have thought I would own an LG phone, but wow, it is truly amazing!!!!!!!!!!! Best phone I have ever owned!!!!

I had the GS3 (best phone I had before the G2) and TouchWiz never bothered me since I immediately installed Nova Launcher. In fact I had the original Galaxy, the G2 and the G3. And I had custom launchers on all of them. I don't think TouchWiz is either a make or break decision.

Alright, quick review now that I've been using it for 2 days.
*please note this is purely out of the box experience on both phones, just to keep it fair.*
Camera: holy hell. The s5 camera is amazing. To me it just blows the G2 camera out of the water. So much faster auto focus, brighter & more accurate colors, instant shutter instead of having to hold the phone still for a second or two every time you slightly move the phone. Plus, all the camera features are amazing. Especially the selective focus shots. Looks extremely professional.
Responsiveness: once again, this is going to the galaxy. Everything seems to snap more in this phone, as if every app were made for it. Even using chrome browser feels like a day and night difference. The zoom is the smoothest that I have seen on any phone. This holds true with everything from gesture typing to just scrolling the home screen. That snapdragon 801 is a beast.
Battery: of course the G2 kills the S5 in this field. The 2800 mAh battery just doesn't stand a chance. Especially with the brightness of the superAmoled+ screen. I have yet to be able to get a whole day of heavy use out of it like I was the G2, but I expected this going in. The phone does a really good job of putting itself into deep sleep though. I am doing nothing to conserve battery (as usual), I have twitter, Facebook, Instagram, vine, ifunny, etc installed, so I was surprised when I realized that the phone was only dropping around 1%/hr with the screen off. But, I have also only had the phone 2 days, things are still breaking in. If anything changes I will come back and edit this.
Display: the display on the S5 is amazing. Holding the G2 side by side the resolution itself looks almost identical, however, the G2 does appear to show whites more accurate while the S5 displays black more accurate due to the magic going on in the amoLED display.
Gimmicks:
-fingerprint scanner: this one was by far the most frustrating to me. The fingerprint scanner was one thing that really caught my attention about this phone. Since it's Samsung making it I figured it would be as good or better than my old 5s. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Don't get me wrong, it isn't terrible, it works, it really does; there is just a technique to it that you have to teach yourself in order to do it one handed (the scanner is designed to be used two handed, one hand holding the phone with the finger on the other hand being scanned.) Now that I have figured out how to do it, I am proud to say that I can successfully use the scanner 95% of the time.
-IP67:I have not got to test this thing out against dirt yet (waiting until I go dirt bike riding again) but you best believe that within 4 hours of the beauty coming in the mail I was texting people in the shower. It really works! I was worried because the aux port is left open, but somehow they have managed to make it work! I have run it under a stream of water from the sink to wash the screen off (which, by the way, works wonders!) And I believe I got some water in the aux jack or something because the auxiliary did go a little faulty for about 30 minutes, but it seemed to fix itself!
Touchwiz:my only gripe about touchwiz this time around is that it looks cartoony to me, almost like a child's toy. The DPI definitely needs to be dropped a bit, that would make this display amazing. Everything else is fine. I love the Samsung "Gimmicks". The multi window, gestures, etc. work great as usual.
Final: The S5 is a great phone, it's lighter, it's faster (just enough to be noticeable), the camera is about as good as it gets on a smartphone, and it can read fingerprints and take a dive. If none of this matters to you, there is no logic in you purchasing the S5. But, if you are in need of a better camera or a dust and waterproof phone, you can't go wrong with the S5!
Wow, thats weird because GSMarena said the GS5 was one of their longest lasting phones yet in battery tests. Should be pretty close to the G2.

Maybe check settings, apps, sync, location settings.

It does seem like my battery is beginning to break in a little more each charge I put it through. Here is what I'm working with currently:

It isn't bad by any means, I'm just hoping for more and more each time I'm reaching for the charger. If I were someone who used my phone ~3 hours a day I would be absolutely in love with this battery. Unfortunately I'm not. I'm on mine usually 5 hours or so a day.

You have to know that these tests are done with pre-release firmware often, and G2 at least were suffering a bit from wakelocks at start. If they did a test now with KitKat it would blow the old value away, especially enduring.

The G2 already did very well, the tests attest to that. Just saying that the GS5 was supposed to be close to it.

I have never once in my life gotten as good battery life from Samsung phones, that are reported in tests. They always have some software crap that eats battery on the background and you can't get rid of it without rooting and that in turn flags Knox. Some friends who bought the S5 are saying the same - they have issues with the battery.
This is why I absolutely never trust battery tests unless they are done be real users and in real life for an extended period of time.

Lol, thats understandable. They do it in ideal conditions, ie excellent signal, 50% Brightness, no draining apps etc. Also AMOLED kills battery on web due to all white background as all sub pixels are needed for white. AMOLED uses more battery than LCD in such conditions by +100% or more. Not to mention at full brighness, and the screen burn to top it off after a few months which I have seen.
