At&t Samsung Captivate problems - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so to begin........ I had the power button problem on my Captivate as well as other problems, phone would get hot and smell and do weird things. So I decided to buy a broken phone off ebay and change out the motherboard.
I swapped boards and the new board had a lock on it so I couldnt get into the phone so I restored it to factory defaults. After that I was able to get into the phone and it works great except for the fact it will not connect to the network! So I have a camera and a wifi device.
Here is a list of problems I see.....
When phone boots up without sim card it doesnt ask for a sim card to be inserted
when sim card is inserted it doesnt read it (card and card holder work fine on other motherboard)
No network but wifi works fine
Baseband version - unkown
phone number - unknown
mobile network type - unknown
service state - out of service
mobile network state - disconnected
imei - unknown
imei sv - unknown
I have tried pretty much everything I have read on the forum....
Rooted phone and installed a custom rom and corn kernel - no luck
Mobiletechvideo method - no luck
moved efs folder from old motherboard to new motherboard - no luck
did a CWM backup on old motherboard and copied it to new motherboard and ran CWM recovery - no luck
tried Galaxy S unlock and no matter what I do only get the FFFFFF code
Flashed other modems - no luck
in hex editor my nv_data.bin files look fine.......
00188008|2e|34|00|00|00|00|ff|41|.4....A
00188010|54|54|00|00|00|00|53|47|TT....SG
00188018|48|2d|49|38|39|37|5a|4b|H-I897ZK
00188020|41|41|54|54|00|00|00|00|AATT....
So anyway, Im at the end of my rope so hopefully I can get some insight before I just give up (which I keep saying I'm going to do but havent yet, lol)
Thanks!

[q] no network no IMEI no baseband

Galaxy S II has no Network upon further inspection the phone doesn't display the Imei, bluetooth, wifi mac address.
Its not in flight mode, I restored to factory settings, tried couple of sims as well.
Is it a software issue or hardware issue??
Is likely flight mode. Press power button long and try the option flight mode or data connection.

NEW PROBLEM : Once put into flight mode,i cant get rid off flight mode and the phone doesn't charge anymore?? Please tell me its a software issue
UPDATE: The phone is charging after doing a factory restore, but now i found out when i go to mobile network, it says SIM CARD NOT INSERTED? Sim card tray issue? hardware??
DOUBT: is there a chance the phone to get network locked??
UPDATE: when I Enter *#7465625# and see the following:
Personalization Status
Network Lock
Network Subset Lock
SP Lock
CP Lock
Phone is from singapore, looks like it got locked automatically?

NO imei copy back your backed up efs folder as per thread dev section.
Try factory reset rtrey flashing a stock rom .

Yea, this is the exact thing thats happened to me (Indian version).
Fresh out of the box phone, worked fine for the last 3-4 days.
Now I'm out on a vacation, and the network selection on roaming was flaky, I was toggling the network selection manually/automatically a few times to get some network, and the next thing I know I no longer have a IMEI (shows unknown) , and the same for baseband ( shows unknown) .
Tried factory resetting , etc, not helping. Will get back home and have the phone repaired/replaced.

This airplane mode sounds dangerous. Unfortunately it may be a necessity when you are travelling etc. Hope there is a known fix or one comes out soon. Until then I will keep my /efs partition backup in 3-datacenter redundant storage place along with my laptop and ext.hdd.
i just recieved an sgs2 in uk and it has this exact problem out of the box.
grrr
if anyone wants to point me to a stock rom for it i'll try flashing it
erm, i dont think flashing will help here.
I reckon that missing IMEI means the /efs partition has been wiped out/corrupted, and that is something which cannot be restored by a simple flash.
finally, after almost 12 days, lots of running around, I finally got my S2 working again.
The service center had to send the phone to their head office since they hadnt received any service info on the new model till then.
They changed the PBA apparently , and finally reflashed it and gave it to me.
They claimed that the flashing was an online process and samsung india service servers were down for nearly 2-3 days, accounting for the additional delay.
Just like my I9000, but I dont think it is the same problem and same way to solve.
I rooted the devise and deleted the nv_date.bin and the nv_data.md5 in EFS file with Root Explorer, and renamed the .nv_data.bak into nv_data.bin, then restart, problem solved
I have exactly the same problem as you guys are talking about. Really weird. The /efs directory, where is it located? Is it located in the main "Root" or is it in a specific folder? I would like to try the thing with the rename trick?

[Q] Sim Card issues

Firmware: 2.3.4
Stock UK and not linked to a carrier firmware
My battery died last night and I then charged it over night. Since this morning I have not been able to get the phone to recognise its sim-card. I have checked the sim card with my back up phone (orange san francisco) and the sim is fine. I have also used a different sim card in the galaxy s2 to check that it was magically incompatible over night and the second sim card which using a reference phone - does not work.
I have wiped the cache, formatted the internal USB and performed a factory reset. I have "cleaned" the contacts on the sim card slot and removed any possible variables like the micro sd card.
I have arranged for the phone to be collected by the carrier as it is well within any warranty period but I honestly would not rather let it go if anyone has any suggestions?
IMEI correct ???
jje
Hi JJEgan
I never thought about checking that. I have just booted the phone up and in the settings menu it is reading:
IMEI
unknown
IMEI SV
unknown
Thanks for the shout as i never thought to check this. Interestly annoying to why/how this has happened. I never have even flashed or modded this phone - unlike the san fransisco which i flashed and overclocked I have never felt the need to do so with this phone.
Any tips on restoring the IMEI for the phone?
Thanks for the heads up

Did you make a backup of your EFS folder?
If you have to ask himp, it's that he probably didn't...
have a look at that thread, might help you in sorting it out yourself :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021
(although I'd let it get hauled over under warranty, service providers rarely dig so deep to fix something so they'd probably give you a new device for free, "no questions asked" -happened to yours truly when his first sgs2 "fried itself" while plugged into an AC outlet... )

IMEI, Baseband Blank/Unknown, No SIM Card Detected

Hello everyone,
I have Samsung Galaxy S2 international GT-I9100. It fall into water. After that everything working fine excerpt IMEI null/null, Baseband Unknown, No SIM Card Detected. I exhibited it and dryed for a month. When I compiled it up again, same problem.
After that I decided to change the moatherboard. I bought new one, change it, turn phone on and same problem!! After that I install new ROM via Odin. And the problem still exist! How this is possible?? Oh and I want to mention that I can't access service mode. When I try to access it service mode is opened but menu is blank!
What you think the problem is?? Maybe smaller motherboard, because the small one at the bottom of the phone I didn't change. I am very desperate after so many tries so please help me.
Thanks a lot

most probably your efs folder is corrupt or some hardware faulty. Do you have any sort of efs backup with you ?
If you have no backup, you're probably boned. Download as many stock roms as you can & start flashing. If that doesn't work, take it to a local mobile repair shop; many have equipment which can re-write the IMEI to the device fairly cheaply.
Thanks for answers, no I didn't make any backup for efs, so today I will start flashing all available ROMs for my country if this will not work I will take it to the service.

I9100 No SIM card/no IMEI/Unknown Baseband

Hi!
So I have this problem with my Samsung Galaxy SII that it doesn't recognize the SIM card for the most of the time. When this problem started, the phone was completely stock (Not rooted/Not a single flashing made by me). Android version was the latest official 4.1.2.
Problem description:
I could be using the phone completely normally and then suddenly it reports that there is no SIM card. Now with pulling out and putting back the SIM card and rebooting couple of times, it might recognize the SIM card again and work for a while (few hours).
What I've tried to fix this:
1. Tried the SIM card on another phone, it worked perfectly.
2. Tried another SIM card on my S2, didn't work any better.
3. I thought that as the warranty is over, I might aswell just root my S2 and install the CyanogenMod 12.1 and check if this fixes the problem (Well it didn't).
4. I saw that my IMEI number shows nothing so I did this: [GUIDE] Recover your IMEI in 9 steps..
Well step 4 didn't bring back the IMEI number but now after rebooting a couple of times when I got my SIM card to be recognized again and then checked the IMEI, it was correct. Though the SIM card wasn't detected after a while again.5. Well now I flashed back the original Android 4.1.2 and checked the IMEI number (SIM not detected), it showed "null/null".
6. I went back to CyanogenMod 12.1 and saw that when it's showing blank IMEI, it's also showing "Baseband version: Unknown.
7. Flashed a new Modem+RIL, not helping either.
8. Tried many other things which I can't remember now but found by googling.
So it's sometimes working and also shows the correct IMEI and baseband and sometimes they are all gone?
My question here is that is there anything I can still try to get it working. And also if anyone knows where the problem could be? Is it some part that is faulty or is it the software that is messing with me? I'm quite handy at taking apart and changing the parts inside if that is the case. It's just that I'm not going to pay over 100€ for a new motherboard to get it fixed.
Thanks for any replies!

[Q] S 3 i9305N imei and null/null... Nothing works!

Ok this is whats happened so far.....
My daughters i9300 Phone's battery charge port was not working but instead of taking to it a shop to get fixed she purchased a faulty one off ebay to swap over the board.
But opening the ebay one it shows i9305 so I carried on swapping it over
After starting the device it shows i9305N on boot screen
Flashed a few Roms but each one shows *#06# : null/null
Sim not inserted so cant get into APN Settings

Have tried the one which was in her own phone but same thing happens
Everything else works fine apart fom this signal issue and imei
At first when I started the one from ebay up it was in Korean and I put her Sim card in it and it showed signal
So after wiping it and trying Roms I am not sure what modem or other files where in this phone
Is it just a modem issue or something else?
One which installed just now is I9305NXXUFNI4_NEEFNI4_4.4.4_KK Which I know is Nordic and I am in the UK
Have also tried UK Roms and same issue!
So does anyone have PIT,CSC files for Odin that I can try flashing and with Stable and preferably bloatware removed ROM
Thanks
Anyone?? tried new Sim Card slot and still shows this.....
