you can use a 3rd party sms/mms app like handcent or go sms too.
I've always preferred handcent myself.
If you go to setting on the mms app, you can see split sms do that would make it not to convert to mms

Hey guys.
I've had this issue since I've got my s3.
Using SwiftKey and special characters in my messages, like â, ș and others.
Now the problem is that using these characters, the 3 message length limit is reached much faster.
Now when reaching the 3 message limit, it transforms into a mms, which I really hate and do not want.
Is there a way of preventing this?
Thanks!

SMS Mod fix on XDA .
No i dont have the link i posted it yesterday .

Searched "sms mod fix" on Google, found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1717867
Hi all.
Have rooted my s3 with the omega rom and using go launcher. Wanted to know, after having searched xda as well as Google, how to either - disable the deliver report sound OR disable the deliver report screen wake up. Its annoying when constantly texting a conversation to have to discard the notification of every sms received.
I like the implementation of the stock ics delivery report (just adds a tick mark to the sms) but the stock ics messaging app doesn't search threads by person. Only searches the messages. (So if there's a mod for that to enable search threads by person name as well then perfect, will ditch Samsung mms/sms app in a heartbeat).
Thanks
Kunal.

Try other sms apps in play store.

True but other apps don't replace the Samsung stock app. They just overlay it thus wasting precious resources. (As I understand it, please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Give it a try. Android quite good in handling resources. If it really cripple your phone, then just uninstalled it and find other solutions.

Have already tried Go sms or whatever the name is. Best sms I've found is the stock ics app but as stated in my 1st post, it for some reason doesn't search by threads only by messages. so if I have a thread with you, a search by your name won't yeild the thread as a result. only such messages where your name is mentioned will be shown. If there's a mod for that then that's perfect. Much better, lighter and faster app than the stock Samsung app.

Any senior member knows a hack for this? Come on I'm surprised the delivery report tone and wake screen hasn't irritated anyone else?

It has iiritated me too
I, on the other hand, prefer to use any other SMS than the stock one, but any other program will not disable the Delivery Reports.
It is very annoying that everytime you send out a message you get a "message delivered" reply, that I have to keep erasing every once in a while.
I have posted several times, in several forums, looking for an answer to this but apparently everybody enjoys knowing their messages reached their destination, as nobody seems to care.

To disable Delivery Notifications open Messages app --> Settings --> SMS Settings ---> Uncheck delivery notifications...
That disables delivery notifications. I like to know that the message is delivered. I just don't like that it sounds out like a normal sms and wakes up my screen. Just a tick on the sent message or a silent delivery report without the screen wake up is perfect. (Like in the stock ics mms app. However in the stock ics mms app one can't search for threads only for messages, while in the Samsung mms app thats possible).

This post is very old but if anyone had the same problem, just use the app "Messaging Notification". It solves the problem.
Thanks! This app is great! To recive proper funcionality I set "Silent" a ringtone in SMS app (to keep showing the SMS in notification bar) and everything else (the ringtones) I set in this app.
I've settled on Handcent for now, but I've been wondering what some of you guys are using. I've tried a couple others, but Handcent just seems fluid and is constantly updated and supported. Lots of themes and tools to utilize, if that's your thing.
Also, in addition to what SMS app you're using, is there an SMS app that will allow "reply to all" natively? I get group texts from iPhone users and when I reply it only goes to the person that sent the message to me.

I've been using Handcent since I moved to Android(always had dumb phones before)roughly three years ago. I like the set up,customizations and how smooth it operates. I also like that the app has strong support, although I'm sure that they all do.
Am I the only one who likes stock apps? Such as stock sms+keyboard? Sheesh. :x

Since I started with Swiftkey for a keyboard app, I NEVER could go back to stock on any phone (or tablet) - It ruined me for anything less!
And there are some stock SMS apps I like and have used. In fact I like the one on the OG and I seriously considered sticking with it, but I switched to Handscent for purely vanity reasons. I like to put a "signature" on my texts and the stock SMS won't let me do that. I do use the stock e-mail app, however!
+1 for SMS Popup. Also the Cyanogenmod version of the stock keyboard since it has a dark theme. Haven't tried it on the LGOG yet because I haven't gotten mine, but I imagine it will work.
Well, since the stock app has a reply to all feature, I'm just running that now. Handcent had some cool stuff, but all these group texts are killing me.
I can't believe Handcent doesn't have reply to all at this point.

I've used Swiftkey and Hancent before and I've always switched back to Stock.
Well, I used them on my Inspire 4g. But I ran other ROMs so I guess the keyboards were never exactly "stock"...
Meh! I can do without. The LGOG's stock is nice, for my preference anyway.
Am I the only one using go SMS pro? Lol.

I use the stock app. Not sure what makes any third party apps better. Would love to hear everyone's opinions on what makes them better.

And you're 100% positive that handcent is not Chinese or otherwise related to anything Asian? I don't see anywhere on their site stating that they're local, or European. And what proof do you have that they steal your info and sells them?
I don't find go SMS a resource hog at all actually so I don't know about that either.

Many third party SMS app comes with added features that aren't available on stock apps. For me, go SMS pro has two features that I don't see in other SMS apps yet, unless they're addons, and those are inter grated lock screen for the app itself and a private chest to store all your texts that u don't want ppl to see. It has screen popup notifications too so uh don't have to constantly access your SMS app to read or reply texts but I think handcent has the same feature.

I like Handcent for some of the features to customize and privacy aspects. Different backgrounds to choose from and privacy inbox to off load or keep texts in through their storage.
The stock is okay, but unless I've missed something it's fairly limited and bland as far as options.
I use go pro sms...haha....it works pretty well too!

I also use Go SMS. It's the only one I tried that allows me to use group messaging properly.

I always used the stock SMS app, never felt comfortable with anything else. I like the simplicity. Swiftkey keyboard plus the stock app= perfect minimalistic experience.
I use the stock sms and then either Swype or Swiftkey flow.

I'd live to use the stock app if only it has security integration. Just cuz the phone is locked doesn't mean ppl can't get into your phone and then read the text messages. Its an added layer of security.
Another advantage of go SMS pro (not sure if handcent has a similar feature) is that if u never delete your text messages and have literally thousands n thousands of text messages within a single contact, go SMS truncates the chain of conversations to the latest ones n if u scroll up, u can click show more messages to view older ones. This speeds up loading time when going into a conversation. Whereas in the stock app, it can take sometimes 5 or more seconds of delay since its trying to load all the old texts.
For example, my conversation with my gf has never been deleted lately, resulting in nearly 10,000 texts between the both of us. When I open our conversation in go SMS pro, it works fine. But using the stock app can take nearly 10-15 seconds n it sometimes even crash and freeze. So yeah, it can make a difference.

Hi Guys!
I hate the stock messaging app so I use GoSMS Pro for my texting. The problem is, whenever I get a group message, the app lags like crazy and if i get 3-4 group messages at a time, the phone becomes unusable. Is there another app that can group message effectively. I don't want an app that recieves group messages but then when it sends the message to the people in the group, they get it outside of the group message. Thanks!
I've seen others complaining, but I have no problems. I use GoSMSPro and in the pop up group messages come up as a picture and I have to open the app to see it, but no issues other than that slight inconvenience.
When I get a group message the phone actually goes through a two step process.
First, it tells me that I've received a picture from the contact that sent the group message. If you click on that message, it takes you to your individual chat with that person, which is very laggy.
Second, it combines that message with the group message, tells you that you've recieved yet another text, and then takes you to the group text, which takes 10-15 seconds to appear. If during that process, another group message has been sent by anyone else in the group text, the app more or less locks up and doesn't work at all for about 30 seconds.
Go dev apps are known to be slow and buggy. It was weird for me as well. I would recommend not using anything by them. There is an app of the playstore that is 99% the AOSP messaging app if you are interested.
What's the name of the app?
