Hey All, hope this is the right area. I got my Prime and love it, but being an old
computer geek I wanted a better ROM. I let it update to .21 and regretted it of coarse. So I used the stock Asus unlocking tool, then Wolf's ultimate flash and downgrade(worked, took it back to .15) ViperBoy's newly updated PrimeTool 4.6 to root and installed TWRP 2.1. Everything seemed to be fine and I was ready for Android Open Kang
Project - Build 35. Yes it was awhile ago, AOKP looks great and I was drooling to get it in, but recovery didn't work. I have tried to flash different CWM's in, nothing seems to change my problem, I go into recovery and my Android guy is working for just few seconds, then keels over with the dreaded red exclamation mark sign, Dead. Yes my Asus still works with all it's bloatware and plods along but I really want to fix this and am just about desperate to try anything.
My computer has ADB access, and I have a novice's novice level of skills, can anyone,
anywhere help?

Just went through the rooting thing again. My device IS rooted, but NOTHING will get me in the recovery, now have also tried GooManager and ROM toolbox to attempt to install CWM over existing one(?) >sigh< Does anyone think using ADB to push another CWM would be for helpful then dangerous? Help?

Hi,
I've had a HTC Hero since they came out, and for most of the time I've had it, it has been rooted and running various roms (Cyanogen, lately).
A few weeks ago I somehow got dust under the screen, sent it to HTC who repaired it and sent it back, with their own 'install' which has:
Firmware: 2.1-update1
Software Number: 3.32.405.2
Now, I'm not really a fan of sense and would like to go back to using Cyanogen mod, however, I can't work out how to root it (well, to get it to a stage where I can flash it with custom roms).
All of the tutorials and step-by-step guides on here and ones I've found on Google don't seem to work any more (I believe they do on earlier versions of HTC's build), I appear to have got as far as 'rooting' it but when turning on with power and home held down I get the red triangle/exclamation mark displayed. I'm clearly not doing something right.
I don't want all the answers spelled out for me, but if someone could give me a hint as to where to look or a clue as to what I could be doing wrong I'd be grateful.
Any help will be appreciated
have you tried the androot method
http://theunlockr.com/down/UniversalAndroot-1.6.2-beta5.apk
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FJA3L8YZ
make sure that unknown sources is checked
after you have download it and put it onto your phone download astro file manager and then find the androot apk and install then open it then press root
after doing that download to the android market and search rom manager and flash the recovery image that way
I had, yes - actually it was the first method I tried.
The first time I ran it, it said 'woot you're root' (or something similar) but on rebooting and holding home and power, I got the red triangle/exclamation mark symbol.
I have since reset my phone to factory settings so I reinstalled it now, again it appeared to root successfully, but on rebooting and holding home/power it just says on the white HTC logo screen and doesn't appear to progress.
Would the easiest solution to be to attempt to revert to a previous 'official' HTC build and then try Androot again? One of these maybe?
hmmm did you try the goldcard method? was the only method to gain root access on my Google G2 Touch (german HTC Hero by t-mobile)
due to most providers lock the possibility of rooting, this maybe could help you...
look for "Goldcard tool" @ google... sry don't know where i got my tutorial from the days i rooted but i remember it wasn't hard to find(although i was a complete rooting noob these days), so should be no problem to you
greets, Summoner
edit: was thinking... the exclamation mark looks like a missing custom recovery, maybe you need to flash one.. i'm using AmonRA 1.0.7.1 (build number correct? don't know) which can be found around here on the forum.
I was a Hero user some months before. I tried official 2.1 update just to root it again. I used this guide: http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?3941-Rooting-my-new-HTC-Hero&highlight=root+hero
I used amon ra recovery then. I also ended up getting red triangle. This was solved when i formatted my sdcard and only put the recovery image.
I had the same symptoms, could only get amon ra installed via rom manager alternative install, it would then allow me to reboot to recovery once, but every other time I would get the red triangle.
I believe the problem was I had two recovery.img files, stupidly I had copied a recovering flash image onto the sdcard, then renamed it recovery.img, not realising its name was then recovery.img.img.
(its been 20 years since I've administered unix systems..and it shows).
perhaps check the recovery img you have, and where it is, and re-try the command line flash, it might not be a rooting issue, hth.
LM<FAO
sorry for laughing but this is a thing that happened to me when i was a beginer
REMEMBER THIS rooting doesnt mean u have a rec image remember use androot to give u super user then use rom manager to flash clockworksmod recovery image then reboot in recovery
jave PHUN
wishes the best for all your heros
Thank you all kindly for your assistance; after hours of trying, tears, tantrums and almost throwing my phone out of the window I'm up and running on Cyanogen Mod again
Thanks!
no problem remember to press the thanks button to who ever helped you
hmm I've done fallowing:
1. androot
2. rom manager - flash clockworksmod recovery image
3. reboot in recovery
4. backup
5. wiped cache/dalvik
6. installed Elelinux-7.0.0-RC2-Hero-v1.6 (2011-03-23)
and now the android logo keeps looping (more then 5 min)
/cry
Right now I'm on the latest radio and android verison. I was planning on getting a TB but my phone went swimming and selling it on ebay was going to help finance my new phone. So now I plan on rooting it and installing XtrSense. I might try the gingerbread ROM too, but for now XtrSense. The only problem is I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it
So how do I root and install a custom ROM????
Here is what I tried so far:
- Installed the one click root app and ran it.
- rebooted like it said, but it said I had to go into Amon's recovery and install a zip. No where on that thread did it state how to get into Amon's recovery and I don't feel like bricking my phone, so I came to ask for help.
I am a 2 on a 1 to 10 scale of being linux literate, and I am thoroughly confused.
Any help would be great!

It's pretty simple, and it may depend. There are two ways to start recovery:
- with the phone powered off, hold down VolUp while you power up until you see the green-text-on-black-background Amon's Recovery start.
- for some versions of the Eris bootloader, this doesn't work. So, restart into the bootloader by holding down VolDn while powering up. When that starts, there will be a prompt telling you that you can press VolUp to start Recovery. Just press VolUp and you are there.
For the rest of it, assuming that you have already copied the xtrSENSE zip file to the root directory of the SD Card (i.e., not in a folder or subfolder), you can follow the directions in this thread, starting with post number 4. And, yes, the directions in the 1-click app post are a lot more sparse than they probably should be.
So I downloaded the ROM, erased my SD card and put only the ROM on my SD card. When I booted into recovery, i got a phone with a red exclamation mark that is inside of a red triangle. Any Ideas what I did wrong?
I took out the battery and restarted the phone and it works fine still
EDIT: I just re did the instructions for the one click root app. Everything works fine now and I'm happily using XtrSense. Thanks for all the help!
No CWM for me? Primo not going into CWM recovery any way I try
So I unlocked the prime after realizing root was not the only thing I needed to start flashing ROMs.. TRUE
I rooted using Sparky's method, so easy too. I also tried to root with viper mod one time when apparently Sparkys wasnt working again after I did something like un-root for fun. But Vipermod failed due to drivers that weren't installed and still haven't, reason: could not figure out how or what part was the driver to be installed nothing i clicked on (in XP) worked to download the drivers. however XP does recognize the prime after Windows Media Player update 11 . it said flash complete or successful . I've flashed CWM from the app itself but the only real function I have from it is fixing permissions...
So should someone like me who just reads downloads and flashes (like a madman flasher) to just wait for a newer version that is fully functional so I dont mess things up and need to learn hours of great knowledge to unbrick the TFP/???
I've read that its not really working all the way is this true???
and another ?Q: I want my web to be speedy like Speedy Gonzales so what do I delete from it and what is the best web browser for speed surfing... this prime was crawling around untill I deleted some things that were uselessly running it seems to have worked a bit but not enough a delete list would be rad. Also one other question was it my order of operations which led to a faulty CWM? though I ve reflashed it several times to no better result.. And also if you are still reading (and thank you very much if you are) I dont know how to manually give CWM a go or how to manually get into recovery--- volume up and down plus power seems to soft brick the Prime untill I hold down the power button for a while untill it vibrates for a second then release and push it again to turn it on....and I held power plus volume down but such small print showed up on the upper left corner that i couldn't really know what to do... I also saw the symbols one was a USB symbol,Q: What is this function? WHat would happen should I push the USB symbol ???... ALso can I get updates from Asus after the unlocker app has been used EDIT: DON"T need them however I will find out how to turn these FOTAs off . And Q: does anybody know how to keep the Logitech keyboard connected it times out so when you go back for it it can take a good thirty seconds recovering from its nap... any fix? thanks alot I cant wait to start flashing better ROMs than stock, mine is fairly buggy

It is hard to tell if you tried to go into CWM correctly...here is how:
With the Prime OFF, hold the vol down button and the power button until the white lettering appears (you seemed to do that). Then, you have a few seconds to hit the vol up button. (If you wait too long, it won't work.) You should go into recovery at that point -- CWM version 5.8.2.0.
I did the first version of the recovery install manually, like you. But, honestlly, just download ROM Manager from the Market and let it install the latest Transformer Prime CWM for you. If it cannot do it, you have a problem.
If ROM Manager cannot do it, you are probably not actually unlocked. Do you remember giving your rights away to your warranty? If not, you did not unlock and you need to run the unlock .apk. Most of the guys with CWM problems did not unlock their devices correctly.
(P.S.) Personally, if my Prime had been too buggy, I would not have unlocked it. I would have RMA'd it!
Thanks

I had a similar problem. Bought my Prime from Amazon in the USA and it came preloaded with Honeycomb - imagine that!!! Anyways I struggled as a result to flash a recovery...I seemed to get root quite easily using NachoRoot and ViperMod methods but flashing a recovery and trying to boot into recovery had me ending up with an exclamation marked Android on boot! 1 day of persistent trying and searching high and low, and am glad to report I finally have a rooted Prime with working recovery (just about to flash Touch Recovery now and then a custom ROM...) running ICS 4.0.3...
My steps:
Trying to flash a custom recovery on HoneyComb really was the show-stopper here, using NachoRoot, Memphi*, nor ViperMod...it just wouldn't work using ADB, fastboot etc
So after 1 day of trying and almost dreading having to send the device back to the US for a swap out, I decided to focus instead on upgrading my firmware to 9.x.x.15 (just below the .21 version which has no root tool at the moment!)
So downloaded a pre-rooted ICS 9.x.x.15 custom ROM from somewhere (google is your friend here) and then followed this tutorial here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492887
Once I was on ICS, it was then easy to use ViperMod (excellent tool!) to quickly get rooted and successfully flash CWM
Great work to the devs of the different tools I have come across and used.
great
fyi, you only need root to flash cwm FROM rom manager, otherwise you can use fastboot to flash cwm manually.

Hey guys,
I am really hoping someone can please help me out with this, as I am travelling and relying on my transformer to get me around. This is what I’ve done: basically I didn’t like the stock software, so I updated from ICS to JB, downloaded the unlock tool, unlocked the bootloader and rooted my tablet and installed TWRP recovery
From there I installed some version of Paranoid Android which kept freezing up and being jittery, so I figured I’d play it safe with a stable cm10 build, tried to flash it with TWRP and it just got stuck on the ASUS splashscreen, which I later realised was due to TWRP not being at the latest version (did I mention I am clearly a total rookie).
So I flashed paranoid back, and tried to update TWRP which I couldn’t get my head around (GooManager wouldn’t allow me to update it) so I decided to try ClockworkMod Recovery, which I downloaded this .zip and just flashed it over the top, which I thought you could do… Now my tablet won’t boot past the Asus splashscreen, nor will it boot into recovery. I could access the bootloader screen before but now I can’t.
The only thing I can think to do that worked for someone somewhere on the internet was to just let the battery run dead and then try holding down the Vol Down + Power.
Can anyone recommend anything? Or at least tell me what I’ve done?
thanks all

CWM is not compatible with Jellybean. Unfortunately you are hard bricked.
Why didn't you make a backup with NvFlash? If you did that you could restore your tablet.
Hi all
ok so i'm a bit nervous writing this expecting all manner of attack in that i may be posting something that's been posted before lol, i've been working on this phone from start to finish about 9 hours, over two days..... i've googled just about every combination of words to do with the title and everything in between but nothing seems to come close to what i actually need to do as nothing works
i have an LG Optimus 2x / p990, it had ICS on it but was far too slow to handle this, it needs something a bit less hardware intensive to run smoothly, so i went ahead an found cyanogenmod stable ...... 7.2 i installed sdk after an hour of finding out how it works i finally got adb and fastboot working, i then needed this, that, this, that, etc etc etc.....
to cut a 9 hour story short, i've managed to get myself to the point where i wiped the phone of everything but CWM partioned for ics via the AIO software but CWM will not let me install any ROM onto the phone. to be more precise it says i have installed CM 7.2 successfully! (i've tried this via the CWM via external SD card and sideload) i reboot the phone it's as if i've never done a thing, no trace or suggestion i've even attempted it on the internal card... nothing
i'm at the point now where i'm quite happy to just have my phone back now and install ICS 404 but can't use the LG kdz install software as the pc doesn't see the phone as an LG p990 because it's recovery and i can only get it to come up as internal and external memory cards
i'm not really a noob when it comes to tech stuff but this little phone has me stumped.... please, i'm begging you, help me any operating system that can get my phone working will do, preferably the CM 7.2 if not back to ICS 404?
and i know, i know i should have backed up but i had no idea it could be so complicated just to put an OS on a tiny computer
ETA i've tried that exitrecovery.zip thing and it did nothing :/
It's quite simple
Try to reset and unroot/re-lock the phone then unlock and root, then what you need to do is get ROM Manager and get the Clockwork Recovery and the version that supports your device, although you might need to hook up your phone to your computer for the process to work.
Also put back in ICS 4.0.4 when unrooted and re-locked again like stock and make sure it's the stock file for your phone.
And after you got ROM Manger and the Clockwork Recovery
Then just in Clockwork wipe out all data on the device and don't do a factory reset in Android just with clockwork and delete everything that was made on that phone then install CyanogenMod.
After that it will seem to take a long time or just a while to boot up and then it boots faster then the original ROM.
If you have Clockwork Recovery just wipe out all the data while it's still in there and you should be set.
When it was my first time putting in CyanogenMod it was 10.1 RC1 on my Nexus 7 and it didn't work and forever bootlooped, and that was because i forgot to wipe the device. Then after going into Recovery with Clockwork I deleted all the data of my tablet and it worked but took 5 mins. to boot up which is nomal.
And if Clockwork doesn't work, do the same with TWRP (Team Win Recovery Project) and download that which can be found here teamw.in/project/twrp
If you don't want to get ROM Manager or that one isn't working then try this website to get Clockwork because it has the whole list of devices and I recommend downloading from the website instead of their app. clockworkmod.com/rommanager
cheers for that, i've tried all of the above still to no avail, having a think about it the phone is partioned for ics, i'm trying to install CM 7.2 which as i understand isn't ICS so.... maybe the error is that it's a different partioning sequence/setup i'm gonna go for CM 10.1 and see if that makes a difference.
to add i'm not sure why everyone rants and raves about CWM, TWRP seems much more complete and advanced do you (or anyone else) know the main differences?

TWRP has a completely touch driven interface that is 100% themeable, while CWM has a touch version and non-touch version. Also TWRP has a built in file manger and terminal emulator where as CWM does not. A lot of people like TWRP because it provides a lot of good features with a simple and straightforward yet powerful user interface. I would recommend taking a look at this guide if you want more information on the differences between the two http://www.droidiser.com/2013/04/twrp-vs-clockworkmod-recovery.html?m=1.

ok i managed to do it i can't remember exactly how but some good links and info for anyone who stumbles across this in need of help
i went for cyanogenmod 10.1 to make this work i used this AIO tool - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2020737
repartioned with OLD partion layout and BL
installed TWRP (included in the aio)
if you need to reinstall the google play store make sure you have right version if you flash it and get "unfortunately setup wizard has stopped" repeatedly you have the wrong version see this link for which one you need http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Gapps
obviously make sure you have adb and fastboot setup and drivers too.... it's a long process installing the entire sdk, personally for flashing this once and most definately not inclined to do it again i'd go with just the adb and fastboot rather than the whole sdk
also i found a keyboard error with 10.1 where i'd type 1,2 or 3 characters and the keyboard would minmise not sure if there's a proper fix (i found one thing where you disable the autocorrect but didn't want to do that) so i decided to download and install hackers keyboad which is based on the gingerbread keyboad and is much better and comes with full features and integrates nicely
coupled with the info above from YoyoscratchMC and you should be in the field
good luck to all i was ready to jump out my window with my phone first so i could land as hard as possible on it last night but i got there in the end lol
