Hello all! OG Evo user here, I have been given the task of rooting my boss's phone.
My first obstacle is that I see three different 'android development' sections. Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II original, and I9100S (might have got that wrong, I'm on my phone!). I see no stickies that explain this.. is it carrier specific? She has US Cellular. This leads me to my next question.
Does her carrier matter? I don't need some sort of US Cellular specific file do I? Not flashing any roms, I just want root so we can clean up her system and tether.
Last question, is clockworkmod recovery worth two craps on this phone? Cause on the OG Evo it's worthless. The only ones worth using on my phone are AmonRA and variants of it.
Thanks guys!

First thing you do is look at the sticker on the chassis of the phone under the battery & report the details back here. We don't do/tell you anything until you've done that.

Ok cool, what am I looking for? Just post everything it says?

Yes. All of it.
Reason being, I'm not going to be the person who tells you to do X assuming you have SGS2 variant A when in fact you have SGS2 variant B & doing X could brick the phone (I'm using X, A & B as examples; they're not literal).

Specifically model number. On US Cellular I suspect the model is SCH-R760.
Ok I will check it when I get the chance this week. Thanks guys!

If all you're shooting for is root access, try Superoneclick. Always worked for me.
You need to have ADB on the 'puter and the phone in debug mode.

One more thing. If I'm right about the model, then definitely don't flash anything from this forum, as this is the forum for the i9100, which is a different model phone

I'm the proud owner of a Galaxy Note i717 but the limitations of gingerbread are driving me crazy....so the first thing I want to do is root and flash a different ROM problem is I'm without a computer ugh.
I came across a YouTube video showing how to root the other model without using a computer so I was wondering if anyone knew of a solution for the i717 model.
So is it possible to root the i717 galaxy note without a computer?
Help me out here guys any feedback is much appreciated....

I highly discourage trying anything other than what is posted in these threads...since it has been proven to best and most effective why of rooting and flashing...
in other words...You will need a computer and for a safety feature in case you soft brick or hard... you will have a need for a pc...computer.
do you have CWM on your device? like ranger stated below...no need to root to flash...
just my suggestions
You don't need root to flash an ics Rom.

yes sir you are correct...I did notice the op did not mention if CWM is on his device already...he will need that to flash...so then to put cwm he would need.....

Honestly I would not attempt to flash without a pc handy...due to the saying
"ya never know"
Even though we have the same make/model devices....they are not the same... my GNote may not like a ROM as to yours might...like I trying explaining ... the computer being your safety net if something goes wrong....I would wait or find a friend that you can use a computer, but it is your call, it is your investment.
btw unless someone knows a way to put CWM on the device without a computer....I believe you will need a computer...
Since CWM is a custom kernel, you could flash it from the phone using the Mobile Odin app.
Edit: oops never mind -- you need to be rooted to use Mobile Odin. Sorry for the bad information.
I rooted one phone using the terminal emulator after downloading such and busy box to the SD card. But its harder than climbing Everest without oxygen typing those commands.

So I Bought a Galaxy note (i717) the charger port is messed up on the device. It will charge, but it wont allow any PC connectivity. I have searched google and xda for information how how to root this phone with out a PC (aka using an .apk like framaroot) and I can not find a viable solution. I have tried Z4Root and Framaroot and neither of them work. Do you know of any other ways to root my device with out a pc? If i dont need a Root to Flash Could you point me in the right direction to find that information I haven't put CWM on the device yet because I Cant Root so I cant MobileOdin ect.. you see the picture lol. Is it possible to use an Update.zip file? or use a formatted SDcard to flash it like I did to Flash NookColor1?

The answer is yes. It also wouldn't hurt to look into the Dev forum a little deeper and to look up the phone's specs to answer your questions.

Well I think I figured out the RSD side of it. I had a Motorola Atrix 2 at one point so that's not too new but I know there's so many versions of the RAZR and didn't want to screw up any
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Coming from the nexus to a Droid RaZr will mean you have little to worry about. The phone has many aspects which are similar to the nexus like software buttons and a very much stock like overlay. I know that the phone has a lot of support all over the web, not as much as the nexus, but enough.
The Motorola itself has a specialized forum on XDA where everything generic like that will be discussed. Try not to get overwhelmed with excitement or enthusiasm becuase the phone may turn out to be less than your high expectations. I share that anticipation when I am getting a new device. That being said, it is a great device.
As a side bit of advice, do not rush into flashing and modding without reading. It will always end in tears. [BRICK].
Hope you enjoy the phone.
Hit Thanks If I helped.
Just be careful with fastboot files. Make sure you only flash the asiaretail fastboot files that work with your phone or you'll end up with a paperweight.

Well let me start by saying I have rooted phones before, so I know a decent amount of the processes. But it's been a while.
My question is, is there currently a one click root method for an sgs2 on sprint running ics 4.0.4? A friend of mine just got one and he wants me to root it for him like I did his evo a while back.

I've been scratching my head on this all weekend.
King71st, I flashed Liquid JB on it and used Flap's kernel and it didn't work so good yesterday.
All the bricks I've seen is using the wrong rom for the device. There are many variants to most phones and they use a rom for the variant they

No jtag is your only hope.. Sending a brick into Samsung is fraud. You claim all responsibility when you give your phone root access, not to mention installing a 3rd party operating system.
True there are ways to revert everything to stock so that you can return it, but these are for people with legitimate hardware defects not to be abused by someone who can't man up and admit they made a mistake.
Ffs
STOP CONDONING FRAUD ON THIS FORUM!!!
THE REASON COMPANIES WANT TO LOCK DOWN DEVICES AND MAKE US NOT ABLE TO TO MODIFY ANYTHING IS THAT EXACT REASON.
TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN MISTAKES AND STOP RUINING IT FOR THE PEOPLE THAT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!
XDA does not condone Fraud in any way, shape or form. If you broke it and somehow pull the wool over their eyes, don't post it here.
We all take these risks when we flash the ROMs/Kernels/Mods. In doing so, we also should take the responsibilities as well.
I am still trying to figure out why "This weekend" as well as the relevance of this thread.
Hi.
First of all I apologize for my not so good English.
The thing is that I hard bricked my note i717 by flashing a wrong kernel and now I know that JTAG is my only option, but I want to know if they are going to be able to bring my phone back to life, I don't live in the US that is the reason why I want to be 100% sure before I send it.
I was experiencing some problems with the USB not being recognized by any computer, after searching and reading a lot of post it came down to an incompatible kernel (something to do with the fast-charge feature) so I tried to flash a fast-charge compatible kernel but I downloaded it wrong and BAM!!! my phone is just a brick now (kinda useful to hold the door)
Full info:
I had the stock AT&T rom, then flashed some other roms without problems until this one:
cm-10.1-20130304-experimental-quincyatt-m2, that's where the USB problems began... before that rom I had pa_quincatt-2.57-20120122-201611 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1686320)
My question is:
Is it possible to connect the device(you know the JTAG method http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0SX3iDuIZc ) now that it is hardbricked even if it wasn't recognized before bricking?
I appreciate the responses in advance.:laugh:
