So, I got the phone on craigslist, installed CWM via odin, rooted via CWM, then installed an ICS rom (stock, leaked) via a weird integrated odin-style thing (no file selection, but odin style com lists and all, and odin icon, but it was an 877mb exe file that contained all.) the rom works all but perfectly. I then went to sleep, plugging the phone into some random usb charger I had from another phone. Now, a few days later, I realize I'm unrooted. Plug it into the computer, nothing. The phone makes the charging noise, and charges fine, but neither the computer nor the phone realize they're connected at all. Tried one other cable, wiped data/cache/all that, tried installing cwm via stock recovery with an sd card, everything like that. The USB doesn't work in download mode, or in the OS. It's like it's not connected.
This is my first Android phone adventure, I'd really like it to not end in a $350 waste. Probably would just go back to iPhones (and nobody wants that!)
This is why i dont use software from untrusted sources. So can you get into cwm? Hold volume buttons and power buttons together until the first vibrate. Release the power button but keep holding volume buttons until Samsung comes up and it vibrates again then release volume buttons. This should get you into recovery. Have a new rom downloaded wirelessly to your SD card. Wipe the phone and install the new rom.

It has stock recovery. Is there any way to flash a new rom over the current one, without odin, only using an SD card and stock ICS recovery? I've tried the cwm.zip and superuser and both zips fail to verify the whole-file signature.
you said you installed clockwork recovery. did it somehow uninstall itself? i don't understand
CWM is just gone, replaced by stock recovery. Also no USB. Thank god it works perfectly, or I'd be really, really angry.
Check to make sure there isn't debris in the USB port. My Note had a microscopic piece of whatever in the socket, that was obstructing a pin, and every time i'd plug it into any USB cable, the phone would act like it had just been plugged into a dock, and my laptop would see it as an unknown device.
A blast of canned air should clean it right out.
If that doesn't help, check your Device Manager to make sure it's not showing up as an unknown device or missing any drivers
If you can access Download mode, you can easily use Odin to flash CWM, and from there, a more developed ROM than the base stock leak
Well, download mode is accessible, only the computer sees NOTHING. No trace of a note connected at all. Nor does any trace appear when doing anything in the OS, including hitting "connect mass storage to PC"
it says connect a cable to do this, etc.
Not to derail, but damn you got yours for $350? I can't find any for under $500 asking. I got mine for about $450. $200 plus a Toshiba Thrive worth around $250 and I was damn proud my my deal making prowess! Good deal on yours man.

Just thinking out loud but do you have USB debugging checked?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
If you can't connect in download mode, it's got to be a hardware issue. Try using a different cable /port on your computer. If not, you may need warranty repairs.
Try a different computer too. Possibly an issue with the USB controller or drivers.

So the phone unrooted itself and reput stock recovery on it by itself?
Sure you're on the same phone?

So I got my hands on a vibrant the other day... fresh out my friends closet. It was running stock eclair.
I successfully rooted and flashed cwm via rom manager.
Then I tried to flash Asgard 3.2 via cwm but I got a bootloop with a woman's voice saying "convert data partition, not enough space on partition.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for the help guys.
If it helps I forgot to mention that I can't get into recovery either. Both volume buttons and power just makes the screen black and the capacitives stay lit.
Volume down and power just cause to boot normally.
What should I do?

Anyone?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
OK, First of all, your NOT bricked because it can still power up
.AIO Baywolfs program to get it into DL mode and restore it to JFD. Eclair 2.1 this will be the only time you will allow repartition.
After that reinstall Rom Manager, flash CW recovery again.
Then put it into recovery mode again, and select reinstall packages, may have to do it twice, then you'll have the green menu for flashing ROM's
Then select the Rom u want to install, if its in zip form ya gotta do it with CWM
If its in a tar file use ODIN 1.71 above, and don't forget to add the 512 pit file also, don't repartition the drives un-tick it
Also whether you CWM or odin it, just make sure in Odin un tick re-boot after install, at CWM select wipe data/factory reset then do the cache, same thing when odin's finished, otherwise you'll prolly get a boot loop.
Then go to re-boot and let it simmer for about 10 mins average to allow everything to be right before you start flipping thru it.
Thank u so so much very informative post. Only one problem: I think the USB port might be messed up because when I plug it in I get a "USB device not recognized error." That'd with the Samsung drivers installed. I rooted through a flahable zip. I guess ill try with Odin to see if I can get any USB functionality once I'm home. If not do I have any other options??

Yes, HOW TO GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE
* Read the noob guide if you are asking why you would need this *
On PC, open ODIN
Connect USB to PC (not phone)
Pull Battery on phone and replace it
Press and hold in both volume buttons
Connect USB to phone, wait at least 3 seconds (still holding volume)
Release when you see the Yellow Triangle
Remember to use Odin you must be in DL mode first, before you attach the USB cable to the phone, otherwise Odin wont detect the phone , once you see the yellow high-lite in the top left corner of Odin with a com port addy, you can relax because you can flash the phone .
Also start with the stock Eclair JFD 2.1 tar file and the 512 pit file, allow repartition, just this one time, and allow it to auto reboot as well, after that first restore, and other subsequent flashes, un tick partician and auto reboot, so you have control over wiping data and cache, BEFORE rebooting the first time with that brand new ROM flash to avoid boot looping!
Thanks so much for ur help thus far man. But my suspicions about the usb port being messed up have been confirmed, I think.
I pulled the battery, replaced it, had odin opened and usb connected to pc (not phone).
Then with both volumes held i plugged the phone in. the same "USB device not recognized" message pops up on pc, and then the woman's voice "convert data partition, not enough space on partition."
Starting to lose hope man... what do you think?
I think you may need new Samsung Drivers. Go to the guide below and go under the section called "4. Odin" and look for the link to get Samsung Drivers. Hope this helps you!

You need the proper USB drivers
sounds like you have messed up USB drivers.
i freaked out about that stuff too the first time i flashed.
here's what I did, it may help you.
1) delete any Samsung Composite USB devices in your Device manager.
2) pull your sim card, sd card and battery
3 connect your USB cord to the computer and phone
4) hold both volume up and volume down
5) insert battery now
6) you should be in download mode now (see yellow triangle with lightning bolt and android)
7) run Odin and flash stock JFD.
Guys thanks so much for all your help.
Unfortunately I have tried everything suggested here and still have had no luck getting any USB functionality out of this phone.
I still don't understand why I can't just get into recovery (i.e. not something through usb) to fix the partition issue myself to get Linda to stop *****ing.
Install Samsung kies, or uninstall and then reinstall if you already have it. It will delete and reinstall your drivers. You have a driver issue
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Tried the kies suggestion... still same.
Just to reiterate:
I plug it in with battery in and pressing no buttons, and get:
on pc - usb device not recognized
on phone - nada
I plug it in holding both volumes and but battery back in after and get:
on pc - usb device not recognized
on phone - loading circle, linda *****ing and then charging battery screen
Anymore suggestions???
Have you tried a different USB cable? different Ports on your computer?

Hi!
First off, I've done about 6 hours of searching and other troubleshooting. I couldn't find really any thread on the the problem my Vibrant has. I apologize if there is a thread, and I couldn't find it.
Extra info: I had a Vibrant last summer and I rooted it and installed quite a few custom roms. I wouldn't consider myself a noob, but I'm definitely not close to an expert.
I have a Samsung Vibrant. It was running Android 2.2 and 3e recovery. I wanted to install an ICS rom, so I rooted it. I then install Clockworkmod recovery. I flashed CM7(Android 2.3), and that's when it started having problems.
It syncs perfectly, I can transfer files between SD cards and everything. The problem is, it doesn't charge. The battery icon has the lightning bolt on it, but it doesn't charge.
The other issue is that it won't go into download mode. I believe I've tried all the available button combinations. I also installed ADB(and the appropriate drivers) and did the "reboot download" command. It rebooted, but didn't go into recovery mode. I also tried that command on the phone, in the terminal app. Same result.
I've tried 5 different USB cables.
The problem seems to have started after I rooted it and flashed CM7.
I have two batteries, but over the course of troubleshooting, both have died.
Oddly enough, I plugged it into my mom's Atrix 4G charger and it started charging? That's charger number 6!
This might get you download:
Pull battery. Some people think you need to pull sim and sdcard. I didn't need to.
Plug phone to host.
Fire up Odin on host.
Insert battery. If no luck, pull battery and reinsert while trying the three permutations of volume keys.
Once in Odin, reflash bootloader.
If still problems, Odin to stock.
try holding the home button + up/down, different combinations of that works to get into download after cm7 and up.
For what it's worth just holding volume up (no power button) while the phone was powered down and then plugging in a USB cable hooked to my PC always worked for me to get into download mode.
But whenever I've gone up to any of the Ginger or ICS ROMs I flash the Gingerbread bootloader in Odin first and then the ROM.
If you've got time, keep troubleshooting (espically if one cable worked... weird), but I say save yourself a headache and get all your goodies off, Odin back to stock, format the internal and external SDs, and then try again loading the GB bootloader first.
Thanks for the suggestions guys
Using the new cable, I was able to flash back to stock with Odin. Even back on stock 2.2, it still won't charge off any other cable. Oh well. I really don't mind using an Attix USB cable.

It sounds as though you're dealing with a hardware issue and the malfunction simply happened at the same time as your recent upgrade. Possibly one of the USB pin connections is flaky.
I was flashing from MIUI 1.9 to MIUI ICS in CWM and all seemed well until upon boot it hung on the MIUI bootup screen. After waiting about 15 minutes I figured I would simply ODIN back to stock and try again as I normally do when I have a problem flashing. In ODIN however I was unable to make it past the boot.inf stage of the flashing. Stupidly I unplugged the usb cable mid flash and tried again, and again same result, it would hang at boot.inf. After trying a couple different stock ODIN files the phone will not turn on at all. Even if I pull the battery and connect the phone to the pc I cannot boot into download mode. When I connect to the wall charger the battery screen does not come on either.
Strangely if I press the power button on the phone with the phone connected to the pc, windows will make the sound of a usb device being connected, however, if I release the power button it makes the sound of a usb device being disconnected. ODIN does not seem to be recognizing my phone anymore since I haven't been able to boot into download mode.
I've bought a usb jib hoping this would solve the problem but it hasn't seemed to work. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
Please someone help me get my phone up and running again. I've flashed numerous roms before and had trouble but nothing as serious as this.
Try reading up on Droidstyles Guide . Its in General section .

Thanks for that. I went through his guide but unfortunately I think my problem is a little more serious. My phone will not turn on at all. I cannot boot into CWM, download mode or boot normally. The screen just remains black. It doesn't show up as a recognized device in windows but when I connect the usb cable it makes a sound of it being connected.
If any has any ideas on things I could try I would be really grateful. I bought my phone out of contract and can't really afford to buy a new one right now.

Can you "3 finger" into recovery ?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda app-developers app
No, when I try to use the 3 buttons to boot into recovery the screen stays black.
Another strange thing it's doing is when I connect the phone to my Mac with the SD card in the phone the Mac will continuously popup a window that asks whether I want to connect the usb device to the Mac or my virtual machine. It flashes so fast I'm unable to click either option. If I connect the phone without the SD card in this menu never comes up but I'm still unable to boot into download mode.
Hmm....I've never heard this before...have you tried plugging phone charger in ( wall outlet ) and let it charge 8 full hours

I charged it from the wall charger overnight still no luck. Yeah, I bought it a year and a half ago used from ebay. I think it's really strange too. I've had plenty of hiccups flashing roms before but it's never been something ODIN couldn't fix and I'd at least be able to get into download mode.
I think you are going to have to use UnbrickableMod.
Thanks MM. I bit the bullet and bought a used Galaxy S II. I may still try that unbrickable mod so I can give my Fassy to my mom who's overdue for a smartphone. I've never used a soldering iron though and not too certain how successful I'll be.

Have you tried the wall plug trick?
I had been running a Fascinate rom on a Showcase for almost a year & the same thing happened to me. Initially, the battery had run completely down and after full charge, I had nothing but bootloops. At first I could connect via odin, but could not complete flash.
After messing with it & yanking out the cable as you did, I had same issue, blank screen, pc would beep but that was it, pc/odin would not recognize or show the comm port. I would get unknown device.
Ultimately, I successfully repartitioned & odined a stock Fascinate Froyo EB01 rom by doing several things -- not sure which worked, but perhaps might work for you rather than soldering
First, I fully charged an oem battery using a spare battery charger (not in the fassy)
After charge, I put the batt in the fasc & plugged the fasc in to the wall charger while holding down the volume button & got the download mode to show up.
I left batt in when I unplugged from wall & the download mode stuck.
Odin still didnt recognize on my laptop, so I tried 3 other machines till I Odin finally saw the fascinate, at which point I odined Froyo with .pit & repartitioning as my starting point, then clockworked & rooted etc. I think I left battery in during the flash, then reflashed later in download mode with battery out.
I was also successful using heimdall a few times, when another pc wasn't available & odin wasn't playing nice. Was very odd, as 2 of those laptops ALWAYS worked fine with odin & the fascinated showcase before. Now they still won't recognize, but I can easily odin if I try diff computers --- some windows 7 some xp & some vista.

I had the same issue. I think it had to do with the battery being too low. I think that ODIN could have a check in place to allow only to flash if the battery is not clos to low in case things go wrong. I had a second fully charged battery and when i read the above post, i changed the battery across and it set it to download and ODIN eventually detected it. Thanks for the help guys.
I have a similar problem, I was on PA JB rom 2.18, and I decided to flash latest devil kernel [1.5.2? or something like that]
so then it would just boot into devil recovery. and that's all. Tried to flash pa rom over it [to get stock recovery back] but it failed. also it had lots of errors about mounting.
So I did advanced restore, and chose to restore boot from other JB backup. This just made it worse, bootlooping into an android recovery with a "!" triangle, then immediately rebooting, over and over again..
So I put into download mode, and heimdall a boot.img extracted from the JB rom [paranoid android], and it still didn't work right.
So then I heimdall'ed the atlas.2.2.pit, thinking the partition was screwed. Then I was booted into cwm 6.x! So I thought I was out of the woods, and wiped, then flashed PA 2.18 jb rom, and then rebooted.. and then I had no samsung logo bootloop. I could tell cuz it was dark, and I could see the backlight coming on and off. on, off... on... off... endlessly.
I tried download mode, and it didn't work. That's when I got scared.. I tried it again, nothing. just the black [very dim black, because of super amoled technology] screen, coming on and off..
So I finally tried taking the battery out, and then it went into download mode!
But I still cannot figure out why it will not let me flash any rom. I'm gonna have to boot into windows and odin back to EH03.
Good thing I have a 3-4 day old backup.
So, do not use devil kernel unless you want a softbrick.

Here is some FYI for you guys. If you are using a pc with a USB 2.0 or higher then it provides the power to go into download mode for Odin. That's why people say to remove the battery and then plug in the USB cable and hold the volume and power to go into download mode for odin. IF you are using a desktop then it's best to use one of the hardwired usb ports on the back of your pc, if it's a laptop then they are all hardwired to the motherboard. USB 2.0 and up all provide power through the usb port, therefore if you leave the battery in while Odin'ing it may not be a good outcome, this is just a suggestion.

It's probably just a precaution so you don't accidentally reboot the phone while flashing or something like that. Every guide I have read says to pull battery before using Odin so I do... and I haven't had any problems. I think it'll probably work fine with the battery in, but why bother taking the risk?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 that I recently rooted and when I rooted it it flashed a custom Kernel as well. Upon rebooting the phone, now my home button and back button soft key is not responding. I think I may have flashed a kernel from one of the Galaxy S2s that has the 4 soft keys along the bottom rather than the 2 soft keys and the home button, Whenever I try to flash anything through Odin now it says that a connection failure happens. If I put the phone into Download mode it is not recognized through Odin anymore either. Also, when I plug the phone into the USB of my computer and try to do anything with the phone through the USB it shuts it off and just shows the battery charging symbol. If I try to flash anything through recovery it says that Signature verification failed. I'm a bit stuck and I don't know what else to try.

If you can acces recovery mode (Volume UP+Home+Power) you can save yourself:
-If you can't access the SD card by USB, try to remove your external SD card and connect it to PC through a card reader, if you don't have one, buy it because it's far cheaper than an new SGS2 (or 3)
-Download Phil'z kernel that suits your current ROM and copy it to your SD card
-Put SD card back into phone and flash this kernel (See post #3 of the above thread), depending on what kernel you have flashed, read the appropriate instructions (usually: Install Zip from SD Card > Choose Zip from SD card > select and apply)
-You are done
BTW, can you provide a link to the kernel you flashed ?
Hope this helps

Philz kernel could bypass this

Download mode is available, but when I plug it into the USB port Odin won't recognize it. But all of the drivers are installed. I've tried to flash philz through Odin but it won't recognize my device as being plugged in unless the phone is actually booted into Android OS. Then when I try to flash it just shuts the phone off and pops up the battery charging image.

Regardless of what it says there, what does it say for model on the label under the battery?

It says GT-I900.
But everything worked fine, then I flashed that file through ODIN and ever since the home button and the back button soft key wont recognize. So I'm pretty sure whatever I flashed was for the Galaxy S2 model with the four soft keys rather than just the two with a home button.
So flash another kernel for I9100.
Get it at xda tho.

I've been trying. Odin won't recognize my device when in Download mode, when i boot into Android and try to do anything through USB it shuts down to the battery charging logo, through recovery I get "signature verification failure" all of these suggestions are helpful, but I have already tried them.

Hi
Have u tried flashing another kernel through mobile-odin ?
I'm still new to this stuff but I think it should work for you.
If u want to try it look for the thread with same name dl it ..free version, you will also need another file in same thread called
MobileODIN_FlashKernel_I9100-v2.0 (in same thread further down)
you can dl them on pc, put on card install them try.
or try rom-customiser u should be able to flash a diff kernel or Rom without pc-odin or recovery mode.
Good luck
Peace
I tried keeping it connected and restarting it. I also tried stopping all Kies processes and that didn't work so I uninstalled it but kept the driver. That didn't work. So I tried reinstalling the drivers.

So you can get to DL mode right?
And you're sure It's a I9100 Model.
- You've re-installed kies already, so we good there. If you've unistalled it, please re-install again & close all 4 kies applications running on background.
- Get a couple of USB cables (along with the original I9100's cable) and start trying them one by one on each USB port.
- Still don't work? Try it out on another PC, same drill.
- No luck? Try the same steps in "Windoze".
- If all above fail, try it all again.
You gotta make that PC see your device, it already did, so it can do it again.
I had tried to update my phone via Kies and the computer blue screened. Now the phone is stuck on the ODIN Mode screen with a picture of my phone on the left, a yellow triangle in the middle, and a computer on the right. Taking the battery out does nothing, restarting does nothing, restarting while holding down the volume buttons does nothing. No matter what, it always comes back to this screen.
When I plug the device into my windows based PC and open ODIN, ODIN does not see my phone. When I plug it into my linux computer and run lsusb, it does not list my phone in the output, so the computer definitely isn't recognizing that my phone is plugged in. A couple of weeks ago, I had this problem while trying to back up the phone, so I'm not sure if it's related to the botched upgrade or not.
Does anyone have any tips or advice here? I'd really love to be able to use my phone again. I am using the cable that came with the phone. I have the same results with other cables, as well....
I'm happy to provide more information if needed. Just tell me what you need to know.
That screen is a form of download mode. You should be able to flash stock or stock plus root from there.

If this statement reflects what you actually did, then it suggests the wrong order. You must first open oden on the desktop, and then connect the phone to the computer in download mode.
Try that first.
Next you could try putting the phone into download mode with the battery pulled out. Open Odin on the desktop, then with the battery out, hold down the vol- button while plugging in the usb cable.
Thanks for your response.
So I went ahead and cleared out everything and then reinstalled the USB drivers. Opened ODIN, connected USB to computer, took battery out of phone, put battery back in, held down volume buttons and inserted the cord. The screen immediately loaded up the one I spoke of in my first post. Odin still did not recognize that I had my phone plugged in.
So then I installed Kies and went to the firmware restoration item under the tools menu. Entered my model and serial number and put my phone into recovery mode according to the instructions there, but the "Start Upgrade" button was grayed out and never became clickable.
One thing I did notice while doing this (On yet another new computer) is that when I plug in the phone, I get a "USB Device Not Recognized" error in Windows. I'm not sure if this is a result of it being in download mode or not, but I thought it worth mentioning. I did attempt to blow out my mini USB on the phone for good measure, but had the same result, even with another cord.
On ur Windows pc, did u try different usb ports ? And don't use a usb hub.

Yes, multiple ports on multiple PCs.
The port was working fine yesterday when the Kies update failed.
Have u tried using a Jig to get ur phone into download mode ??
(See my signature link below. There r links there on how to make a jig and/or where to buy one)

First of all make sure that your PC isnt running Kies in the background - Use Tsk Manager to kill Kies process
Then Plug In your Phone
Enter Download Mode by holding both volume buttons and powerbutton till the Boot Screen Appears.Let the power button go when you see the boot screen but keep holding the volume buttons.
In no time you'll be in Download mode
Then go to odin and check if your computer recognises it. Odin willl show you (Com:x) X - Any Number
Then you can easily flash stock rom or a custom recovery..

I have already made sure Kies is not running (And have tried this on a computer without Kies installed) and according to creepyncrawly in the second post here, the screen that I'm seeing IS download mode.

I'm definitely open to making one, but I'm confused since everything I'm reading says that the screen I described IS download mode, just with a different screen. Are you saying that you had the exact same situation as me and a Jig fixed it?

You could order one fairly inexpensive. But order it or make it still takes some time. But as several have mentioned, it may help.
Did you try forcing download mode with the battery out as I suggested in the second post?
Yes, I have tried forcing download mode by taking the battery out, holding down Vol and inserting it again. These are also the instructions that Kies gives, but it didn't work there either.

My phones update failed and I got the same phone, triangle, computer. I tried different USBs, different USB ports, different computers, tried Odin, nothing worked. As soon as I found my USB jig that was lying around, and plugged it in before I put in the battery, and the regular download mode which I am used to seeing showed up. ODIN recognized the phone and I flashed back to stock ICS rooted I downloaded from XDA.

That's different that what I suggested. Remove the battery and leave it out. If you have to, sit on it so you won't be tempted to put it back in, lol. While holding vol down button, plug in the usb cable. The usb will supply the power. The phone should boot into download mode.

I guess I misread that. I blame it on my stressful week ending with no phone
So I just did that and boom, download mode as I would expect loaded up first time, no issues after I held down both Volume buttons while plugging it in (Holding down just Vol - didn't do anything). Unfortunately, it still did not show up in Odin (Kies background processes were all killed and USB driver IS installed on this computer and Odin WAS open before I plugged the phone in)
So I unplugged, opened Kies, and was going to try a restore through there since I could finally get download mode working properly. Except when I tried it this time, nothing happened. I held down the vol buttons, plugged it in, got a single vibrate, but nothing showed up on the screen. Unplugged, put the battery in, and it turned on and screen worked. Took out the battery and just plugged it in and the screen worked after vibrating 6 short pulses (It pulled up the screen mentioned in my first post). Unplugged, held down vol buttons and plugged it in, same thing. Blank screen.
Now I'm really at a loss. I'm starting to wonder if there is something wrong with my USB port on the phone itself.

Hi there,
i have same problem with my Galaxy ACE GT-S5839i: i can't get ODIN to detect my phone. Originally, i tried to flash my phone and made a mistake in the process (installed a ROM before i installed CWM). This caused my phone to stop booting. The only thing remaining working is the download mode. But i can't get ODIN to detect. I tried 2 PCs, different USB ports; i tried to install Kies, or just the drivers... nothing makes ODIN detect my phone... I hear my PCs detects the phone when in download mode (it bips) and my PCs both recognized my phone (Samsung Mobile USB CDC Composite Device). On PC uses windows 7 and the other Windows Vista. I ran ODIN v4.38 on both... Would be grateful for any idea what to do...

I had the same problem with kies on a sprint s2. EXACT same problem. Cord got jerked out in the middle of Odin flash. THE ONLY screen i could get is the one you described.
Also went through the steps with keis, dl firmware, got to the last part but the start button was greyed out. I had to do this several times and finally the start button lit up. Idk why it didn't work before but it finally did. Have you tried doing it more than once?
I wished i could be more help but that was my experience. Maybe it will work for you.
