With the progress being made toward an ICS ROM port (link below) for our beloved Streak5, I thought I would ask for opinions on which Launcher would be best to run on it.
Feel free to add a post as to reasons.
The only available options I've found are as follows:
* AOSP (the vanilla android launcher)
* Apex (from 'Android Does')
* Nova (from 'TeslaCoil Software')
* Trebuchet (from CyanogenMod 9)
:fingers-crossed:
[ROM][Early pre-alpha] AOSP ICS 4.0.4_r2.1 for DS5
Just realized there are many similar threads to this one on various different device forums.
Not meaning to reinvent the wheel here, so I'll leave it up to the Mods to decide on whether there is merit to having a Dell Streak 5 specific topic regarding which one works best for our hardware/rom... or just lock this thread and be done with it.
Thanks.
:cyclops:
This thread might have some merit as:
The S5 is one of the few WVGA 160dpi devices (at least it would be if the ICS rom wasnt set to 240dpi), pretty much all phones are 240dpi
But a counterpoint is that there are very few ICS only launchers as that means not being compatable with 93% of your market (at least according to google [Link])
The trebuchet launcher from CM9 supposedly works on stock ICS, and it's ICS only as it's an enhanced stock ICS launcher(?).
At least with a custom launcher and 160dpi you can use the Stage 1.7 widgets, they're pretty nice on my S7/S10/touchpad
(The stock launcher is 4x4 grid and stage 1.7 needs at least 5x5)
ADW and ADWex have worked fine on HC/ICS for a while and are native apps on those, they simply have no reason to make seperate HC/ICS only versions.
this is depend on dev who release the rom or his rom type. once ICS is ported into our DS5, there will be a lot more port from others OS (AOSP, AOKP, CM9, MIUI4 etc etc). but everyone can choose...its in Market as long Android 4.++
Don't leave Holo Launcher out of the mix. I'm currently running it on the ICS rom an its working great

I no longer have a Streak, but on my Samsung Skyrocket I tried all of the ICS only launchers when I was running ICS and I just keep coming back to Launcher Pro.
I have the nova on my streak 7 I like it first one that was closer to stock vanilla IMO

hi
I am a user of the new beta1 of CyanogenMod7 by Quarx. I dont like ADW so i tried that.
It does not work it boots but it stays at cyanogenMod Logo.
Is there another way to get the Stock Launcher?
Hmmm... I'm interested too.
Maybe this can help you?! http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-stock-gingerbread-launcher-on-android-devices-running-cyanogenmod-7/
I have already tried that, is nearly the same as that what i posted in the first post. Does not work. Its becouse wo dont have official cyanogen.
there's a gingerbread launcher on the market, but i don't know if it is the same of the stock version.
I now 3 gingerbread Launcher in the Market the one by Eugene373 does not work on CM7, i dont like the one by MoDaco becouse no 3D app drawer and the third one cost money so havnt tested it yet....
If you want stock launcher install it from market, but before install beta2 cm7 rom becorse it support now opengl es2 and launcher is now working

i don't think you can
I always use the HE Launcher regardless of the rom. I upgraded to the cyan rom and first thing I did was install this launcher then deleted the ADW system app.

I use launcher pro with some tweaks its better than eugene launcher and faster eugenes launcher is little bit slow

ADW works now good for me
after installing cm7 app drawer was a bit laggy but now works perfectly
I've installed Launcher Pro Plus and it works like a charm, ADW was laggy and I couldn't do anything about it ( that was also the case when I was on Froyo).
Ok i think Stock launcher is not needet anymore, i tried it and did not like it becose of the low resolution in the app drawer. Go Launcher is best i think.
Good work !
Could someone please expain to me the pros and cons of each launcher?
Which is better in terms of memory usage and speed adw or laucher pro?
All I know is that adw uses less ram, what are your desires from a launcher?
Sent from my R800x using Tapatalk
my desires from a launcher is fast, smooth, good memory usage, and looks.
Go launcher is pretty sick but from what I see a lot of people prefer adw, I've used launcher pro recently and it's smooth but kind of boring and go launcher is fun but I think it's a little laggy so I would go with adw ex

Adw ex is the best
Its just like adw but has more features and its faster
You should try it out!

Device: HTC G2
Rom: CyanoGenMod 7.1
Kernel: Tiamat v1.1.3
Gingerbread 2.3.4
Overclocked to 2.03 Ghz

i have before actually, and i really liked it.. i just wanna know if it is actually better than adw in other terms
try out Go Launcher EX
It's been on the market for a whole less time than launcher pro and adw ex but its gaining a great market in a short time.
REALLY good launcher.
The bonus is you can switch where your apps are placed on pages etc. to go launcher ex through home migration
If your running cyanogen, it comes with an optimized, albeit older version of ADWex. No point in buying the ex version unless you do want to have the latest, but the. CM7 version of ex is smoother
Sent from my Shifty Speedy using Tapatalk
I have tried them both and for a long time I only used the stock GB launcher. But I recently decided to change around and bought adw launcher ex. I already had a key for launcher pro. I played with both of them for a while and decided to go with adw. It seemed alot smoother plus there was alot of option. Also it now has a hidden dock bar that is really nifty.

there is.. well im using a htc dream g1, and there is no official cm 7 for it soo... is there for cm6?
also i thought cm used adw not adwex.
I'm running cm7 and it had adw.
CM has a tweaked ADW. I usually run ADW EX. Found something called Rocket Launcher. It looks nifty, haven't played with it much tho.

Are there any issues running Launcher Pro Plus on CM7? I bought it before I CMized my phone and miss the widgets and being able to swipe the dock items for different actions.
I would personally prefer GO Launcher ex.It is very customisable, transitional effects are available for the menu,Themes in GOstore, ability to create folders in the menu. These are features because of which i love using GOLaunncher ex
So I started this thread to know what all of you are using. I, myself am using:
Sonygenmod Ult. 3.0
Default kernel
Go launcher ex
Old Baseband
No tweaks
What kernels have worked best for your Sonygenmod roms...
Are you using the default Sony Ericsson launcher or something else, I love the sony launcher but its not ad customizable ad the others not to mention I get a FC everytime I slide to the last screen.
Does using scripts/tweaks make our devices run better or is that user opinion...tweaks like kickasskernel/loopy/supercharger....
I also love the default system font of sonygenmod 3.0, but im not sure what it is
If your not using default launchers, what do you use as alternatives...ive used everything from launcher pro to adw launcher ex...
ooh and out of curiousity, where would you like to imagine our device being in the next 6 months..
What would be beneficial for cyanogenmod to port honeycomb or ice cream sandwhich...

does anyone use Go Launcher on the Rezound?
The only reason I use it is because I like having
a lot of icons on one home screen. (6x7 to be
precise) HTC Sense doesn't seem to allow this,
or did I miss something?
THanks!
i tired and it lagged like hell on both ics and gingerbread. try adw ex, thing is smooth as butter.

I'm surprised it works fine on ics for you since I read a lot of compatibility complaints. I know it works fine on gb
I've used Sense, ADW, Go, Trebuchet, Nova, and now Apex. Out of all of them, only Go gave me a feeling of slow responsiveness. All custom launchers have lots of tweaks now (including grid size), so I go with whatever is in my current flavor of ICS unless I get issues.

Running GoLauncherEX myself. No lag at all
Have ran it on the following:
Ineffabilis Dues v1.01 and v1.4
CleanROM GBE, DE and SE
Still on old firmware as well. No problems
I use go everything. Rocks Widgets, keyboard, etc, it's super handy.

i'm using it on stock/unrooted....no issues whatsoever.
I had some lag on stock. Maybe I should give it another try...
im running it on CR 4.3 without lag or slugishness
I used goLauncher. However, I noticed the icons were very tiny, and widgets didn't take up the correct size of the screen. I'm using Apex Launcher now, so far no problems.
I absolutely love go launcher. It had all the options I need plus amazing themes. Rotation, gestures, custom fonts despite ics, and phenomenal updates, nothing even comes close. Sadly it only ran smooth on aosp or cm7 on tbolt. It runs like **** on rezound, after debloating and desensing , specially on ics. Ppl suggested other launchers but none come close in terms of themes maybe in options..
I just deal with the lags and hick ups and thank my god for their phenomenal dev team they came a long way on ics
Ask not what your developer can do for you, ask what you can do for your developer.
Used it for awhile and then noticed in my proxy logs that it was calling to china randomly throughout the day. adw ex now.

I tried go launcher when I was completely stock and it did lag so I decided I would try out sense for awhile. I ran go launcher on my Droid x running miui. I ended up not liking the sense launcher at all. Yesterday I rooted and tried out a couple of roms. Go launcher works great on cleanrom 1.7.5 and ineffabilis 1.4(currently on).

I like Nova. I tried Apex when I first flashed Seraphim, but I found one quirk that pushed me back to Nova. I like to set up my one homescreen very minimally, then use a swipe up gesture to launch my app drawer. On Apex, it was really finnicky and would only work with a slow, deliberate, perfectly vertical swipe up, whereas Nova allows some slack and my swipe can be fast and slightly angled, making it super easy to launch the app drawer when I need it. I know I can set a dock icon to do the same swipe up, but I have grown accustomed to swiping anywhere on my screen.
If it weren't for that one issue, I would be all over Apex, as I feel it has a few more options that are nice, and seemed a tiny bit smoother. That one small issue is the only thing keeping me on Nova. Also that and I paid for Nova Prime, so I want to get some use out of it at least.
I've tried everyone mentioned on this thread I can tell you from experience adw EX is my favorite....it has tons of options, from changing icons to scrolling docks,,and different docks,, icons w/no labels on icons,,grid sizelooks good at 6x6,,swipe gestures to hide status bar or do do what you like,,fast scroll or animated scrolling thru screens,,5 home screens,, ...just to name a couple.....If you haven't tried it,,at least try it once.....but remember the best version is the Ex one... wont hurt anything and you may love it,...
Zeam launcher: Fast, free, simple, customizable, no bloat.
Runs better under ICS then GB.
APEX no doubt. Theres an Apex beta which is going to include swipe gestures and more features. i believe those features are locked until you purchase the paid version.

As far as the ICS-like launchers are concerned (namely Apex, Nova, and Trebuchet), the only major area in which they differ is performance and on a very microscopic scale at that. I'm fairly new to Android (my current Galaxy Note is my first Android device) so I'm not aware of everything that is out there but the two launchers I've used under ICS since the leaks have been available to us i717 users are Apex and Nova. As far as transition and animation frame rate, stability (No "frozen" or stuck buttons, no glitchy widget re-sizing when switching to landscape, etc...) and overall speed are concerned, Apex feels much more solid. I have yet to use Trebuchet because I'm waiting on the link to the "NOTEworthy" ROM to be posted which uses Trebuchet as the default launcher. I'll report back in once I've experimented with it and share my experiences.
As far as the classic launchers that have been available for the majority of Android's existence go (GO Launcher, ADW EX, Pro Launcher), it's all a matter of opinion now that ICS is available to us. The primary issue with the classic launchers is when they're used under Gingerbread since there is no GPU rendering API built into the OS like there is in ICS. Essentially, if you aren't opening a full-screen 3D app that uses its own protocol for accessing the hardware for graphic acceleration, then you will have awful performance no matter how well the launcher is designed or written. Thankfully, this no longer has to be an issue since ICS is available to us and third-party code can finally use the kickass GPU in our phablets.
If you like the look of stock ICS better than the look of the traditional launchers, then I would go with Apex because it has the most functionality and performance overall compared to Nova.
is apex only for ics

It works best with ICS, however it can run on older versions of Android. If you wanted to theme Gingerbread to look like ICS, using the Apex launcher would be a good start.

it will have to do until TSF Shell updates there app to work on our Note.......
ok cool i will give it a try

Wrong. Per Apex launchers web:
Q: My phone is running Android 2.x (Froyo/Gingerbread). Can I use Apex Launcher?
A: Sorry, but the answer is no. Apex Launcher is based on the stock Android 4.x (Ice Cream Sandwich) launcher, and it uses many new APIs that are not available in previous versions of the system.
Another vote for Nova here. It's pretty similar to Trebuchet or Apex in look, but it has some additional features in the Prime version.
