Signal strength after ota ics update. - Motorola Droid RAZR

I'm not sure if its how ics reports the signal or what but my bars have went from full signal to 1 to 2 bars at most. Anyone else experience this?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA

I've actually had an increase in signal changing to the gsm leak. On gb it would drop both cell and wifi connection. Now it drops maybe once a day instead of every half hour.
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium

It seems my signal is not as good either.

I'm curious, because I've seen this explanation before, but is the signal worse...or does it only appear to be worse...meaning are the bars now more accurate?

My house is not in a 4g area yet, my 3g speeds are horrid now after the update. I will say i cant see how when im in town and near a tower I am only showing 1 to 2 bars and my db is HIGH like 99-106.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA

I can see one 4g and a 3g tower from my house and know there are 2 more within 5 miles and my signal appears to be lower also.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2

You are not alone...I was wondering the same thing myself...signal went to crap after the update!

My signal is lower, but I think its because I never had as good of signal as gb said. Floating between 3-4 bars while on gb it was full at the same location.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA

Mine is lower too. Theres been some talk about the radio in the newer leaks but I can't quite piece together what exactly is the deal.

Signal is the same. Ics just reports the signal differently. I forgot the article that explained it but if I can find it I'll link it

Well, someone who got the OTA clicked "update later" after it was "pushed" to him and had been downloaded. He might have been a "soak tester", I don't know. But anyways, after he downloaded and chose the "update later" option, he then proceeded to find the file in his phone and uploaded it. You guys probably have heard of it on the "droid forums" but I'm one of the ones who downloaded it and applied the update via "update from SD card" and personally, my signal strength seems better. I was having issues with the 4g vanishing and turning from blue to white as various data driven apps would say "there appears to be no connection, please try again later". Well, I've only had this for just over 24 hours, but I've worked eight hours which is where I usually have the issue the most and didn't have one single time at work last night. Just sharing my story..... (as it is for the moment at least) lol

Definitely an improvement, before my 4g was dropping out constantly. Now it's stable with only 3 bars who cares I still get fast LTE speeds.

I believe that this should sum it up. Was on the Nexus forum but i feel it should still apply.

Thanks for the link...great read and seems to explain away the issue I thought I was having.

This rings very similar to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
ICS does use a different algorithm to measure signal strength. Personally, I feel there is something wrong with the driver set that the manufacturers are having a problem fixing. If I end up having the same issues on my Razr that I had on my Nexus I will be flashing it back to 2.3.6.

You're gonna go back to GB because the signal strength meter on ICS doesn't show the same amount of bars as GB?

I don't care about the signal bars since they have no real meaning. I had little to no service on my Nexus and I live less than a mile away from a Verizon 4G LTE tower. Verizon kept saying it was just the signal bars showed differently and couldn't figure out that I actually had no service. What I am saying is that if with this ICS update comes the same set of connectivity problems that I had with the Nexus, I will flash back to GB.

I gave up on the Nexus because it had poor signal strength period. With the Maxx, signal strength has been very good for me with 2.3 and 4.04.

[Q] Signal Decrease

Just out of curiosity, has anyone noticed a decrease in signal with the p3? I updated last night and noticed a slight decrease. Weather related or not idk. Just wondering
Actually thats funny, someone posted about increase in cell standby and lower battery life. Haven't noticed battery life decrease but a lot of trouble with signal. Even withput p3droid update was on ota update experiencing this. When, accessing browser or xda app or internet in general phone trys to find a signal but repeatedly switches between 3g and 1x till it finally does. Even though it shows I have couple bars still seems as if temporarly signal issue until it connects. Never noticed this on froyo and is why went with this phone, had dinc2 before this with extremely poor reception now im back to where I was. I compared dinc2 and x2 side by side and x2 kept a -10 dbm difference which it seemed better. Even trying to post these responces keep getting errors and multiple attempts in order to post because can't lock a signal.
After posting this went a checked my signal a compared to before gb. Before gb was between -88 and -90 dbm now its -96 to -100.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
Same here..previously had between -82 to -90 and minimum 3 bars in my office. As we speak its -97,one bar and fluxuating between 3g and 1x
Have you checked your data settings under wireless/networks? Make sure you're on auto a or auto b & not home only. I've had that skip around after flashing or updating firmware. *228, 1 or 2 may not hurt either.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
Same issue here. I was 4-6 points "higher" with froyo and even that was around -92 to -98. Now I'm continually on -100 to -104. I posted in another forum hoping that it wasn't just an isolated "me" issue, but I went through the data roaming check & the *228.
Beginning to think it may have been weather. Currently at-82, We shall see.
Try a PRL update, gingerbread came with a new radio. Just dial *22899
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
Yried that did tem all 228 option 1and 2 then 22899. Nothing.helped other than being outside. Down in my apartment is the prob. Jave no signal there but when was on froyo wasn't as much of a prob. Was able to find the signal now it can't even though it shows I have bars and 3g. Strange!
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA Premium App
I have noticed a decrease in signal quality in Froyo too. I recently went from my Droid X to an X2. The signal strength in buildings and in some areas outside has been considerably less with the X2. I very often have "roaming data" issues and often have the "international roaming" popups. I live nowhere near an international boarder. It is very frustrating. I hope the signal strength doesn't get worse with the GB update.
I have done the 228 reset several times with no luck. The guys at the verizon store dont know whats going on but certainly they aren't offering any replacement of the phone.
I see a 228899 update mentioned here... what is the difference?
22899 resets and updates internet info. Atleast thats what the csr agent from verizon told me. Replacement have been the main thing i've been able to get verizon has been very helpful in that part but most devices have had same results, began to realize its not the phone it the service in my are. Some phones do pick up a better signal than others thats why kepts this after switching from incredible 2. Wasnt a big difference but enough to be able to use in home. Now though not so much even verizon suggested a network extender but I dont have broad band so no luck there. They even were willing to send me a thunderbolt but the csr tried to put it in the computer and the system wouldnt accept it. Atleast thats what she told me. Just gonna have to live with it.

Phone idle uses 5 times more battery in prerooted 2.3.3.

please delete this thread mods. i forgot to add a Q to it so i reposted it.
For me i've noticed and it not just in rooted this was with both ota and rooted gjngerbread but my phone has trouble locking onto a signal. I do have signal issues because live in a basement apartment so reception is poor but before froyo reception was little better. When activating xda app anf browser the 3g icon blinks trying to load the page and eventually drops to 1x then loads. Never noticed this with froyo and is why I stuck eith this phone because had little better reception. Compared this and dinc2 side by side and the x2 kept and average of -10 dbms less than dinc2 which results in better reception. my opinion now is it searchs for a signal more often which kills battery life. Just my opinion but something to pay attention to if your having that type of issue.
Just a side note even when trying to post this responce took me 4 attempts because signal. 3g up arrow blinked repeatedly then dropped to 1x then back to 3g trying to lock a signal.

2 things might be going on:
1. You might need to reactivate the phone with *228(1) or at least update the prl listing with *228(2). Both can have a huge effect on battery drain.
2. You might need to have your data reset by vzw . Tier2 tech support can do the equivalent of an esn swap on their end & that can clear up many issues with 3g.

Stop me from jumping....

I just sold my HTC Rezound and got my Razr Maxx from someone locally only about 5 days ago. In short, I miss my Rezound.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, let me explain. I am basing this solely off my experience at work where I spend 40+ hours of my week. Other than that, I really like this phone and want it to work out for me.
In my office here at work, I have always had bad reception with Verizon, regardless of the phone. It's just the way that this building is and the fact that there isn't a Verizon tower close enough to get good reception. Supposedly they are going to install a Verizon tower in our parking lot, but who knows when or if that will really happen.
With that being said, my Rezound held 4G for most of the day, albeit barely. But it did for most of my day and when it dropped 4G, the transition to 3G was pretty seamless.
With my Maxx, I am having major problems holding 4G or connectivity at all several times throughout my work day. If I open the Play Store or apps like Facebook, it will say no connection even when the 4G icon is visible. Then it will turn white at times too.
To its credit, I get good reception outside of work and at home which is true for every Verizon phone that I have owned (Incredible, Thunderbolt, Charge, Rezound).
So what gives? Without going back to a Rezound, what are my other options? The Nexus is much worse in this department correct?
Any advice would help, thanks!
Nexus is horrible in reception department. I know exactly what you mean with the white 4G no connection issue. I get it all the time too...even with 4G showing full bars. Also when I open the browser its just white and froze.

So, it's not just me? LOL
It's getting pretty ridiculous. Today I can barely do anything with it at work, it's not holding much of anything.
Is this a known network issue? Because if not, I will have to dump this phone unfortunately.
Yeah I don't know if it's the battery or what but 4G reception seems hit or miss on my Razr Maxx, it usually works great but in fringe areas it's shakier than I'd like.
That said, I use my office's wifi (where 4G reception sucks) and keep my phone on 3G unless I need to download things. So it isn't a huge issue.
I can't go back to a smaller battery, though.
Just as an update, the reception is embarrassingly bad today. I can't connect to anything data related. Connection keeps going in and out.
My Rezound would connect to everything daily. Only problem is that I don't want another Rezound lol.
Decisions, decisions....
the nexus has horrible signal issues, don't get one. as far as the maxx and signal/4g i get 10x better signal strength than i had with my rezound or nexus. if you want, install the .209 ics leak. it gave me much better 4g reception and speeds.
could also be you just do not have good verizon service where you are and no phone will fix that.

I definitely don't have good Verizon service where my office is located as I said in the OP. But, even with that said, my Rezound always held a data connection, and mostly 4G at that.
I have no idea why this phone with supposed better radios can't match that. It's very, very disheartening.
I will try the ICS leak. Is the .209 one the one where you can't go back to stock if you wanted to? That might be an issue for me.
Thanks!

There is none that they know of. I went into a Verizon store tonight and they installed a new sim for me.
I have had strong signal since then, but I'm not at work and I usually get good signal at home.
If I don't have good signal tomorrow at work I will just have to face the sad reality that this phone won't play nice at work. Then I will have to make a decision from there.

Have you tried simply turning 4G off? Basically, go to the network settings and turn it to CDMA only, instead of CDMA+LTE. 2-3 bars of 3G is better than 0-1 bars of 4G. At least while you're at work.
Are you sure it's not a defective unit?

It might possibly be, but I'm not leaning towards that as I'm getting good reception and connection at home.
It's only happening at work where nobody gets good Verizon signal to begin with. Only problem is my rezound was holding enough signal and not dropping but this phone is dropping.
My conclusion so far is that the rezound holds weak signals better and the MAXX just drops them.

Verizon LTE

Does anyone else have problems with mobile data dropping frequently?
My thunderbolt and rezound act the same. At work, the signal strength reported in the about phone screen fluctuates between -63 & - 73dbm. Ill lose mobile data countless times daily. If you go to the settings to try and toggle mobile data, it's greyed out and says turning on...
So frustrated with this behavior

Verizon probably have a weak signal in your work place.
This happens. Also, LTE is known to stop allowing traffic (at random) and require a turning off/on of Mobile Data (especially when using constant data for long periods of time).
It's annoying.
Different places - happens more than others.
I have also been experiencing issue with Verizon data connections as of late. I have a hard time even locking onto 3G with my Rez. But my other phones no issues, I am now on my 4th Rezound in over a month since having this issue.

Compared to my unfortunate experience with 4G devices, any of my other 3G phones hold onto and got better locks on 3G than compared to the past Rezounds. Now the latest rezound finally does get a data lock the prior 4 did not.
I've got no 4g issues. Almost never drops. I'm in southern California.

This issue has been addressed a lot in many forums for the rezound, tbolt, gnex, and pretty much every 4g phone out. For some phones its not that bad. I think its software based cause once I rooted and s-off I've never had it happen to me again. The gnex I think they narrowed down to combination of software and hardware issues. I've been running ice roms since I rooted. I've been through 3 replacements, all did it, all had new Sims all new phones (not refurbished).
Here's a post I followed when it was happening to me. I've done lots of research on this and I truley do think its software based (mostly because Verizon won't admit its their network)
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
It's a network. If you have -65 -75 dbm on 1xrtt that doesn't mean you have the same signal strength on lte. LTE signal is different from 1xrtt or evdo. The reason that you lose date quite often is because the LTE signal is very poor in your location especially if you are indoor. to improve LTE signal wilson electronics has very good amplifier, that calls sleek 4g-v get it. It may improve the signal by 20 dbm.
There is a few threads on this and no resolutions. There is some kinda of problem with the network that Verizon isn't owning up to. There is a bunch of forums posting the problem as well, where the 4g just drops off and then comes back on. Prior to the begining of June if my 4g dropped out it would go to 3g. Now the places I had solid 4g I am getting it on and off every minute or so. I went down to verizon and the girl said she is having problems with her Tbolt. We changed out the sim and she said she could get me a new phone but to me it sounds like the network if so many people across all phones are having problems. I am going to call Verizon probably this weekend or monday cause I am tired of being on 3g all the time and not being able to use the 4g is driving me nuts. Things are so slow. Arg.

From all the responses, Galaxy S3 is the best signal people are getting to date. Better than the one xxx and the Motorola Razor Maxx. And HTC and Motorola have been known to have the best reception. Go figure.

great I just pre order GS3, r u sure its data signal not gps? cause I found a couple of review that says GS3 has better gps than one X thats all I could find.

How's everyone's reception? Mine sucks

Just curious how reception is for others. As you can see in the pic, I'm in a good area, but it drops constantly. It will show, 6 bars, then drop to none, then 2, then none, then 6 and so on. Even sitting next to my airwaves it does this. A friend of mine has the same issues on his s3. Either we have 2 defective phones or sprint sucks. This phone is great but not sure what's up with my reception. It goes into roaming in town near my sprint store.
I'm on sprint running a un-rooted stock rom.
Note this is at the same location for this pic and notice how it goes from green to brown to none. Fluctuates way to much for me being at work in the same spot

Does call quality or data speed drop too? I read somewhere that the S3 bar indicator scales differently and can not be compared side by side with a different model phone.
Yes really hope you do not have a defective phone and maybe this is a T-Mobile issue.. I live in a very rural area and my Verizon tower is 20 miles away, let's hope this is not the tip of the iceberg on reception for the G3.
So no one has bad reception with this phone? Guess I'll be getting rid of this phone

Is it dropping calls, or data, or are you just overreacting to a few miscolored bars? I mean, certain spots are going to go into roaming; Sprint isn't everywhere. Does another phone go into roaming at the same spot?
Mine seems to lose signal pretty often. It'll go from full strength or a few bars to the no signal circle with a line through it. Haven't been able to pinpoint why yet.
I will say this signal is not as strong as my iPhone 4s (ATT). I was downtown last night in a Bar. I normally text while I am in there, I could not text last night on my SIII, I get no signal inside. On my iPhone i always could text. Sucks when I'm trying to have girls meet me...
That looks like every Sprint phone I've ever had, to be honest. Mine always do that and I have no idea why. lol
It will roam at the sprint store. Sprint reps can't explain it and I get the "we have never seen this issue before" speech. But I'm going to swap it out. The screen is yellow anyways.
I also roam at home with an airwave. Never had that issue with my evo 3d or photon.
The antenna on this phone can't be that bad can they? I know Sammy has a reputation for horrible reception.
And it does drop calls and texts will have to be resent
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
I manage to roam at least 5 times a day. On my moment (SPH M900) Ive barely ever roamed. Also texts seem to fail at sending quite a bit.

My ATT S3 connects just fine! Some buildings it doesn't like but thats pretty normal. Over all its MUCH better than my old Sprint service. 5-7meg down with HSPA+!
Just got my phone today (att) and signal levels seem low when I look a the status bar. for both wifi and 4g. How do you display that screen from OP? I can't seem to find it.

It'd under battery setting. Then tap on the graph at the top. It will bring up that screen

mine is also horrible , just wait for sprints 4g lte
Same thing happens for me, the phone will drop the signal even when I'm on WiFi, never had this problem with the lte.

to look at your reception status, simply go to "battery" and then hit the "cell standby" bar in the list of battery usage
with Time on of 8h 37m 26s, time without signal is 26%
Mine is about 3-4 dbm lower than my Thunderbolt I have for work, but it displays 1 or 2 less "bars".
Sprint no-charge roaming
This won't fix your connectivity issues, but
In conversation with a Corporate Sprint Rep today, billing dept, I was informed that Sprint doesn't charge for roaming
in the domestic US. I didn't know this.
If phone goes into roaming, perhaps this lightens the impact?
I think this may have something to do with the antenna being on the bottom of the phone where your palm rests. Atleast thats how it is on my Tmo. If I hold the phone just on the top half or not holding it at all then I get more bars and more consistent. Soon as I hold it in particular with my left hand is when I lose signal bars. This only happens in an area where I'm only getting 2 bars.
I also had a sprint s3 (not active now) but never really checked the signal bar since I never lost connection.
