Hello, i`ve upgraded my s2 to ics and i have a inconvenient. On gingerbard, holding the power off button would showed up some shorcuts including the 3g activation. On ics if I hold the power off button it shutdowns directly. Is there any possibility to make it do the same action as on gingerbard? Is there any alternative for activating the 3g without going deep into the settings? Thanks

That's strange. I don't think that holding power shuts it down directly without power menu (unless you hold it for 8-10 seconds, then yes it's normal, but I don't think that's what you mean). Maybe something went wrong during the update. Try reflash maybe, or reset to default...

ive tried like 4-5 diff ics versions today.Everything is working perfectly but the phone shutdowns directly when I keep it pressed instead of showting shorcuts like gingerbard does.Maybe i`m missing some option, some check box unchecked but I didin`t find any option.

Official Samsung firmwares? I find it really strange. It should have a power menu. (you are holding it just 2-3 seconds right? Not 8 so you are forcing it to shut down).
I'm sorry, some other expert will help you. But stock firmwares and custom ROMs, they all have power menu. I've never seen any firmware/ROM that shuts down directly.
Sounds like you're missing /efs/imei/keystr
Create a file called keystr in /efs/imei and put "ON" in it.
wow, you are a genius.Everything was fine and working except that holding thing and I also had no screenlock, it was just getting to the menu if i would have pressed home button or power off.I fallowed your instructions and they were both fixed.Thank you very much.

Is there a way to disable the menu option when long pressing the power button when the phone is in lock mode?
My phone is switching its self off sometimes while in my pocket.
I have tried widget locker but that does the same as the stock screen and still offers this menu while the phone is locked.
I'm using Redmi Note 8 pro Miui 12 Global Rom Android 10 i not found the option sec_key.kl
I can't answer your question directly other than to say you may be blaming the wrong thing - is it really possible that you can keep sustained preasure on the switch for about 8 seconds?
Is it possible that your phone may be rebooting / hanging / freezing in your pocket like mine and many others are?
Have a look here and here to start
Two seconds is enough in my stock lockscreen. So it's very much possible.
Stupid how the shutdown-window is accessible through the lockscreen. Takes away the whole function of this so called lockscreen..

I agree. For me, it's just under a second. I mean come on. Really?

But you then have to select "Power off" and then click "OK". Are you suggesting that's happening in your pocket?

Tapping or pressing thepower button will bring the swipe screen / lock screen back but this does not stitch off the phone!
From OFF, if I press and hold the power switch, the lock screen comes on, then goes off after 5 seconds. At this point, the phone has not shut down.
From OFF, if I hold the button down for about 9 seconds, it does shut down.
As I said, I don't think this is all that easy to do by accident - maybe even impossible! BTW, my phone is stock.
I'd still say it's the dreaded phantom rebooter

Never mind, you're right about that. I stand corrected. It takes a lot of effort to shut your phone off with the power button, so that can't be the reason OP's phone is shutting off.

Thanks very much for this
Just removed the wake option from the power button.
To answer a few other posts. The few times it has switched off it has only been while in my jacket pocket. Carrying my niece, seat belt on/off etc. I know it appears difficult to replicate but I have not had any other issues like mentioned in the other forums linked in post 2.
The reason I think its the power button is because I have taken my phone out of my pocket recently and noticed that the menu to shut down has been visable on the screen. I haven't had an issue of it turning off while on a desk etc which is why I think its the power button.
I may be wrong and if it carries on turning off I will look at other options but I do think its silly (how ever hard to replicate) that an option to access the shut down menu while in lock mode is stupid.
By removing the option to wake from the power button and setting widgetlocker to block homehelper there is no way to access the menu the power button had until the phone is unlocked. Which is how the lock screen should work regardless of if it solves my problem or not.
For SGS2 users, I used Root Explorer to edit:
Code:
/System/usr/keylayout/sec_key.kl
I found the following line:
Code:
key 116 POWER WAKE
To disable the Power button from waking up your device, simple delete the word 'WAKE', save the file, and reboot.
Cheers to the others in the HD2 thread for the tip.
same problem with galaxy w

i have the same phantom restart problem......but i cant access the phone to use the root explorer ....wat should i do????
Hi all i made an app to avoid this, blocking power menu on lockscreen no need of root working on 2.2+ and you can set up a custom menu (power and reboot need root) so you should take a look and if you like please leave a 5 stars, or let me know any issues

Nice, this was exactly what I was looking for on my Nexus 4 running 4.3 and Cerberus. Unfortunately only the power off menu is disabled (it just flashes for a millisecond) but long pressing the power button still shuts off the phone...

yeah, i cant do anything without change whole rom :/ its just a workaround :/
Heey i have a problem with my power button. Had this problem before but it was gone after one day. The problem is my powerbutton isnt functionaly like it has to be. It changes from time to time.
Sometimes it doesnt work at all when i push the powerbutton.
Sometimes it works slowly. And when i have pushed te button couple of times, i get a phone with screen on, off, on off etc. Like it has lag or something.
When my powerbutton wasnt working yesterday, I saw that the button was pushed the whole time. I mean when you push powerbutton and homebutton you make a screenshot. If i only pushed the homebutton it was making a screenshot.
This things change from time to time. Any one got any ideas????
Im not even sure if its my button that is failing or it has to do something with software.
btw i already tried reflashing rom and kernel with no result.
thx in advance
It's the button, not the software that is the problem. Try taking off the back cover and cleaning out whatever dirt/lint that could be under the button.
i tried that already but it doesnt seem to work. Looks like i have to go back to stock rom for warranty. Hope this is going to be possible since my powerbutton isnt working.
Hi,
i recently bought 2 Galaxy S wifi 5.0 as there was a deal going. first one worked fine but a few days later and i've opened up the second one to find the screen isnt working.
its stuck at the 'select locale' screen from the initial setup with me unable to scroll and select any options. the back and menu keys don't work either although the home button seems to be doing something as the keys light up when pressed and it also works in recovery mode.
The volume key works as i can see the media volume going up and down when its pressed, it also worked when i booted into recovery mode to try a factory reset.
i can see the media scanning running after bootup and when i plug in the usb to a computer it appears with the USB connected (but ofc i cant press the button) so i think the system is running fine?
the power button seems a bit stickier than the one thats working fine and also when i hold the power button in to shut down the device (unable to press power off) it comes straight back on. is there way to force a shutdown rather than reboot?
just wandering if theres anything i can do to hard reset? im a bit reluctant to flash a stock rom / gingerbread as i have on the other one if the screen is just dead but thought id see if anyone had any ideas of anything i can try?
cheers,
Well, I would return it since it is still under 30 days (where did you get it?).
comet was £99.
yeh ill probs take it in tomorrow just wandered if there was anything i could do to double check the screen was definitely goosed
Hi everyone,
I have a problem with my S2, it keeps randomly rebooting at random moments. Sometimes it would give hints that it is about to reboot by randomly popping up the "Device Option" window which has the power and restart option (this is when you hold the power button). So I figured that something must be wrong with my power button. I then remapped the power button (not sure if its 100% right) to volume up instead. Now my volume up is my power button. However, my S2 is still rebooting. I then bought a new battery because of the "spin test" I read somewhere (the battery had a tiny bulge in the middle). The new battery was created December of 2013, so pretty new. To my dismay, the problem still persisted. I tried flashing a rom for the first time (Slim Bean 4.2.2) but still to no avail. I did system testing of ram and cpu, everything checked...
I am at a lost here... If any one can give any advice that would be great.
US variants have their own fora, belongs here. I've asked mods to move your thread, sit tight until they do.
Sounds like the power button is going bad. That power menu you mention popping up generally occurs when you hold the power button down briefly, so the fact that it appears on its own would lead me to believe that's your problem.

Are you sure that your power-to-volume remap completely disables the power button? I am also leaning toward the power button being the issue.
What button remap method did you use? I would like to see if it disables the power button on my i777.

Using root explorer, I went to system > usr > keylayout....
I simply switched VOLUME_UP with POWER on "Generic.kl" (only on key 115 and 116 for this file), then on "Gpio-keys.kl," then on "qwert.kl" It seemed to have worked but there might be some conflict because it would reboot in a minute or so if i pressed the power button.
I don't think I was thorough enough with my changes... I honestly wasn't sure on what I was doing, I was just so frustrated. I tried an app from this forum
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464
but that didn't work.
I changed everything back to normal now. I returned it to bone stock 2.3.4 and did not install any app, it still rebooted, so it must be a hardware problem somewhere. I just updated it through samsung kies to 4.1.2 and ran Framaroot and got it rooted.

Hi all, as the title suggests, what once worked for me and im sure most of you no longer works for me.
I press the power button to get the menu. airplane mode, screen shot etc all work but when i press the option to power off nothing happens.
If i hold it down for a few seconds to get safe mode, this does work but instead reboots into safe mode which isnt what im after.
The only work around i have found is to remove my sim card which initiates a reboot.
Its not critical but not sure why all of a sudden this no longer works for me. Any ideas?
Only thing I can think of is to make sure that quick boot isn't ticked in developer options, on mine with that option unticked the phone powers off fine but when quick boot is ticked & you press the power button then tap power off it nothing happens other than the power menu vanishing.

Your welcome mate, glad you got it sorted
Another thing to keep in mind in the future is if you have a hard crash, you can force power-off/reboot if you hold volume up + power or press the little red button next to the sim-card tray.
