[Q] Screen resolution question - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my s3 from tmobile and i love it. I do have a question about the screen though. On my old Galaxy S, i could get the search bar and 4 rows of icons on the screen, however on the s3, i can only get 3 rows.
I tried looking through the settings but even if i reduced the font size, it did not help. Larger screen but less screen real-estate? I must be overlooking something.
Anyone have any suggestion?
Thanks!

Are you using the touchwiz launcher?

It is the default that came with the phone, so i'm guessing it is Samsung's Touchwiz.

Really? Every screen shot of the stock Galaxy S (original) shows 4 vertical and 4 horizontal rows, plus the dock. Which means if you had a search bar up top, you'd only get three rows of icons underneath it and then have the dock below.
Exactly the same as the Galaxy S II and Galaxy X III.
Although you can change this with other Launchers.

That makes sense. My S3 is default out of the box (just got it a few hours ago) and I was trying to configure it to match what I had on my S. I'm running Passion ICS rom on my S, so that makes sense, it's probably using their launcher.
I had not thought of that. Thank you for the clarification. I did not think that that was launcher related. Figures that it should be something I can configure through settings. :S

Launcher Pro

Anyone know if Launcher Pro will look good at a higher resolution like the Atrix has? I tried LP on my Galaxy Tab and it did not look so good due to the high resolution.

I looks great. I changed it to 5 rows, instead of 4 stock, and you can fit more on each screen than a captivate. It's crazy fast too, and the transitions look great.
i just paid for the PRO version because i really liked the free version. Where do you go in and change how many rows and such? There isnt a Launcher Pro app in the menu.

You can change most launcher settings by pusing the menu button the homescreen and choosing "preferences" or something similar. There is also a shortcut there to the Android Settings menu, so don't be surprised if you click that one first.

I notice some of this as well. Nothing that gets me worked up, as this probably hasnt been optimized for dual core phones, but i definitely notice some lag.

Mine is so fast. I truly feel the unleashed speed of the tegra now.
Mine's working fine. Only problem is that on the "People" widget, contact icons dont show up. Well, only the contacts with a gmail pic show, but the ones synced with Facebook dont. Anyone else care to confirm this?
Thanks

I have had this happen on other phones. I just left the Samsung Epic 4g to get the Atrix and my Epic did the same thing. I waited a few hours (next day) and updated the "people" widget and they all appeared. Let me know if this helps.
Got a thread going in General about reboots. Launcher Pro may (or may not) be the cause.
For anyone installing, post back if the phone reboots at some point (within 24 hours) after installing Launcher Pro.

My launcher pro looks great. I configured 6 columns and 5 rows. I'll post a screenshot later. Love this phone.

Same here, and using Folder Org for grouping apps together, along with the "show apps" as the icon, looks very slick and excellent details on the tiny icons.
Been running the paid launcher pro for more than 24 hours now and customized it to death. Im currently running it with beautiful widgets and live wallpaper, no problems encountered
Its not causing reboots for me, but it is laggy.

Had LP Paid edition for 24 hours now and also on BW and there has not been anything bad about it so far. I dont feel the laggy as much more like its smooth now. The one thing I dont like about all this is the icons are so much smaller and so is the text for some widgets since resolution is so high.
I tried to put the option for stretch icon to fit in column and width but that didn't really do anything.
Other than that LP on this is pretty nice..... so far so good.

i cannot get the pictures to sync.
Anyone with the Calibri font think they can whip up some quick dock icons for the Atrix?
Preferably like the ones from Dreamlyfe Mini set?
Bare in mind I'm using ADW, but I have noticed that Live Wallpapers make my phone feel like a brick. The second I put a static one in there my phone went into rocket mode.
Anyone having a problem setting the default Launcher? I installed Launcher Pro and it becomes the default, but I can't go in and change it back to Blur as the default with uninstalling it. HomeSwitcher or HomeSmack are not working.

[Q] Changing the lockscreen and/or the lock screen graphic?

I have a Samsung Galaxy SII and it has the stock lockscreen which looks like this:
img819.imageshack.us/img819/9435/sc20110603154529.jpg
Is there a way to change the graphic that the lockscreen uses (can'r seem to find this setting anywhere ) or an app that will give me a cool looking lock screen (the stock one feels a bit 'cheap' IMO).
Thanks guys!
Widget Locker is the answer.

You can e.g. download an image and then I think go to the gallery. There if you look at the picture you will have the options to set the picture as wallpaper background or "lockscreen background".
This really is not intuitive and I spent a while before finding it.
Yeh you need to have images in your gallery and then go to settings/ display/ screen display and there you can change your lockscreen settings.

[Q] Changing Icon Sets

Hey everyone. I was wondering if there was a method to change the icon set in Touchwiz 4.0 (yes im rooted) to something else other then what they have as stock.
And furthermore, ARE there any icon sets out there? I saw a couple of cool looking screens in the post your screenshot thread, but i'm not sure if that was because they were using some different launcher.
Thanks,
diabolical
I am also interested in this. I really like touch wiz ui and all the features but i strongly dislike the childlike icons. Is there anyway we can change the icons without changing launchers?
I was wondering if we can have the
HTC Sensation XE Lock screen (with the circle to launch)
on the Samsung Galaxy S ll
The HTC lockscreen is cool. Just get the app Agilelock. It duplicates it perfectly. Only issue i found is right when you install, it pops up a message that you cant read, unless you can read some form of chinese. Hit the right button. The left button will download something.

They probably used a theme (with a custom launcher). I think launcher themes change entire icon sets. Other than that, idk.

Launcher questions

Okay I've looked for this for about a half hour and couldn't find anything so I'm sorry if this has already been asked.
I downloaded go launcher ex so that I could have the scrolling dock. I don't necessarily need the scrolling part but would like 5 icons. How do I get the 5 icons and still have the fancy new "add to home screen" pop up window still at the bottom? I don't like the one that pops up in the middle of the screen.
I am still a noob, so plz explain any answers. Thank you
I am Rooted and have Root Explorer

You cannot change the amount of icons in the dock using the stock Touchwiz 4 launcher.
There are a lot of launchers to choose from which do have the option you
are looking for, however I would suggest NOT to use a different launcher
because the stock Touchwiz 4 is a lot faster and much smoother than any
other launcher I have tested so far. (and I have tested just about all of them).
I am using ADW Ex with the black glass theme dockbar(i think, i do know that black glass does have 5 icons). And my icons are from various adw themes for the colors. Adw is very very smooth and I don't mind giving up touchwiz for more customization.

GTG mentioned that someone has a tweaked version of TW4 that has 5 Icons. Not sure if it works well on the GSII but he mentioned it in his rom thread. Pretty sure it's on page 1 or 2.
Thanks so much everyone. I'll look into the touchwiz 4 tweak. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Any way to change dpi without rooting?

My guess is no, but here's hoping. I am coming from an original Note, which I have had rooted for a while and run a ton of different roms on. I honestly really didn't want to root this note 3, but I am finding the dpi to be a bit unbearable. I liked to run 240dpi on my note, with nova launcher this allowed me to go 7 icons wide and 8 or 9 tall without much of a problem. I have no need for that many icons on my home screen, but it allowed for more widgets, or maybe just a few icons and still being able to see the majority of my background picture.
I already put nova launcher on my note 3, so I am able to get the same icon grid size, but it just looks so tight and the icons are huge.
This is also a problem for texting. On the note(using stock android messaging app)I could easily see the last 3-5 messages even with the keyboard open. One the note 3, I can see one or maybe 2 of the last messages with the keyboard open, and as I start to type a new message I'm lucky if I can even see all of the last message sent.
I just don't get why they give you such a big screen then clutter it with huge icons and texts/keyboards and things. Sure its great for movie and web browsing, but that huge screen really doesn't do much for day to day use I don't think because they scaled up everything else at the same time.
One of my friends said on his Note 2 there was a way to change the resolution(he said resolution, not sure if he meant that or dpi) and also a way to change the amount of icons touch wiz allows. I did think there was a way to change the number of icons in touchwiz. Its default is 4, I was pretty sure 5 was possible and even though they had recently bumped it up to 6, but I could not find that option anywhere.
Any help?
I used Nova Launcher to resize the icons on an unrooted Note 2. I don't know if that's still the case on the Note 3 since I don't have one yet.
I can resize widgets with nova, but I don't think you can resize icons.I mean I was able to change the grid size, but they looks so big and clustered together than on my note at 240dpi
What's the point of such a beautiful screen!

I know how you feel. I'm also thinking of getting note 3 (now i'm with N7000) but with all the stuff so huge it really is ugly (i wouldn't want to root either). If you find a solution please let me know!
As far as I can tell you would need to be rooted to change the dpi. They are accessed through the system file build.prop.
If you go into nova launcher settings and long press volume down you can access hidden features to allow more grid space which allows more widgets. You could also change the icon size rake them smaller.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
