I am one of the lucky ones that lives/works in an EDGE only area. Is there a way to disable 3G/4G and just use EDGE? Under Mobile Networks, I can uncheck 'use packet data', choose 'access point names' (currently set to epc.tmobile.com) or select 'network operators'.
I saw various talks of it on other devices, but wanted to know for sure what my options were on the GS3.
Thanks.
It's in the hidden menu to change your network settings.
Dial *#*#4636#*#*
Select Device information
Scroll down to network preference
I believe "GSM only" will take you down to edge.

Thanks for the info! It was set to "GSM auto (PRL)". I went ahead and set it to GSM only, rebooted, and it held that setting. Guess we'll see if that helps any on the battery life too :good:
Kind of ridiculous that this option isn't easily available, as it was before

HI Folks!
I am wondering if someone knows How to set The Network mode to GSM/UMTS?
Navigating the phone tree:
Settings ---> Wireless & Network Settings --> Mobile Networks ---> Network Mode-->
Option Available:
Sprint Only!
Any CDMA!
Any GSM/UMTS
Automatic!
NO matter if I change it or not always when I reboot my phone it goes to CDMA or Automatic but always looks for CDMA.
I am using the photon with UMTS 850mzh so I need to know how to set that by default or how to hold that setting in the phone.
Also I would like to permantly Disable the "Roaming Guards" I am tire of switch off those thing everytime I reset the phone!
Thanks a lot!
p.d phone rooted and Activation thing disabled.
BOMB! bomb!
Set GSM UMTS
Dial *#*#4636#*#* -> Phone Information and select GSM auto (PRL)
Menu>settings>wireless&networks>mobile networks>roaming guards and clear the appropriate check boxes and that should solve your issue.

Hi,
As I have some problems at home with 3G, I wanted to set my preferred network to GSM as explained here. In that article, the way to access the "Phone Info" is to dial "*#*#4636#*#*". However, that does absolutely nothing on my phone (stock 4.1.2).
Searching this forum suggests that there is an application called "Any Cut" that can give a shortcut to that menu. However I just can't find that app on Google Play anymore. Does anyone know another way to to access that menu?

Re: [Q] How to access "Phone Info" menu?
You can search for something like '2G/3G switch', and you can find apps you're looking for.
Or you can just go to Settings -> Mobile networks -> Network mode -> GSM only.

Thanks, but that is not what I want (manually change between 2G/3G). I want to change the preferred network type to "GSM Auto (PRL)". It seems that I need to access the "Phone Info" menu somehow...
I would be interested too. Anyone knows?
M looking for the same thing, [ the preferred network is set to WCDMA and my SIm is a GSM one ] however the difference is in my mobile(micromax A101) the preferred network option is disables, recently I downloaded an app from play store , its "Network' there I can see a preferred network drop down list, but no matter whatever mode I choose its changing back to WCDMA immediately after selecting. Guys any clue what am I supposed to do?
Yes you can
You need to download a ROM and apply this:

Works really good.
I don't know why is't in all cooked roms....
I was wondering if there is a way to permanently select a operator?
My network operator (Play) allows free roaming on other carriers inside the country (Orange, Plus, T-Mobile)
I get horrible signal in my work and at home with my "home" carrier and I always roam on one of the others. But I have to manually select that network and every so often I get a "refreshing SIM" message and it switches back to my home carrier (Play) which then gives me 0 bars. I then have to go into settings and select a roaming partner all over again (and this happens at least 2x/day)
Is there a way (either by editing a file/deleting a file or some app) that I can force my phone to only and always roam and not connect to my home network?
pssss.... there is top secret solution... when you will be in the roaming range, go to mysterious hidden menu, called: Settings.
Then, in the section called Network, go to the Mobile networks sub section.
When you'll be there, you possibly would find the most hidden secret feature: Network operators selection mode.
when you will enter this one, you can choose between manual and automatic operator selection.
Please do not populate this advice, is for highly advanced users only, and because of that it is hidden so deeply... in the secret document called: Owner Manual.
haha funny. But if you read my post you'll see I do manually select the network, but it still kicks it over to the home network every day.
if you unticked auto mode, it should not switch back...

I did but it clicks back when there is some "refreshing sim data"
I looked more about the operator and it seems others have this issue with their android phones. It seems the operator forces a network update (I guess to cut down on their fees they pay to the other providers)
So my option would be somehow removing the home operator from the list of operators that the phone can connect to (if there is such a list) or some app that forces to only go on certain networks that I pre select. Nothing is set in the network providers as auto, everything is on manual.
Or of course change providers (but I'll have to see what the canx policy is)
Is there a way to switch between networks? Does the s4 even connect to 3g?
I ran a switch app that use to let me do it on the thunderbolt, and used built in notification bar switch in cm10 on g' nexus. Any solutions for the s4?

I used the app shown here to access the phone info.
Go into "Device information" and choose either "CDMA auto (PRL)" [for 3G only] or "LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)" [for 4G/3G] under "Set preferred network type".

Awesome, thanks. This look exactly like lte switch for thunderbolt.

It looks like you already have this solved, but I strongly recommend you download Widgetsoid. Additionally, I also strongly recommend installing it as a /system app; this enables a lot of the toggles to function correctly.
Does this still work? Where exactly is "Device information" these days?
Hi, I am currently using the VZW Google Edition ROM 5.9 and have service and WiFi. My problem is it only connects to 3G, and not 4G. As advised, I have not gone into network settings, but I did open Phone Info and see that it is set to LTE/CDMA auto. Any reason I am not getting LTE?
Just a thought, but maybe you could check the APN settings and see if they are different than what you should have.

Thanks for the response. I am kind of new to this, where do I check the APN settings and how do I know what I should have? Thank you.
Do you have LTE coverage in your area? If so, can you use another phone/friend to double check if LTE is working? I only ask because we had LTE go out where we live.
Gir brings up a good point, I don't have 4G where I am (and probably won't for years!), but that may be simplest as long as they use the same network (although many carriers piggyback off the same network).
The APN settings should be under "Settings > More networks > Mobile networks > Access Point Names". On a stock ROM you have to get to the actual file through ADB, you should be able to see it if you have an aftermarket ROM. The settings for the APN will depend upon Verizon. Here is a good post with APN settings for Verizon, the first part is for Android.
Coverage could always be the issue as that has plagued me more times than not.
From the ROM thread:
Go into mobile network settings.
Verify that your CDMA subscription is set to RUIM and not NV.
For good measure go into the rest of the options and set it to CDMA/LTE, automatic, and allow data roaming.
Back out to your home screen.
Then go into Phone Info app.
Scroll to bottom and tap radio off.
Open the drop down list and select CDMA/LTE auto (PRL).
Turn the radio back on.
Reboot.
Upon reboot open Phone Info again.
Verify it is set to CDMA/LTE auto (PRL)
** you should have full service now * *
** if not * *
In Phone_Info(*#*#4636#*#*):
Try CDMA auto (PRL)
Then try CDMA/GSM/LTE
If those still don't work then your nv_data needs reset. The only way to do that is in the hidden menu dialer codes in a touchwiz-stocktype rom
If you destroy your nv_data and cannot get data back via the above you need to (stop screwing with your network settings)flash back to a TW ROM, enable hidden menu, and do a NV data reset via dialer code. After doing that make sure your phone is not in modem mode under diag dialer code. Until I update this section Google is your friend. And it is available information, verified. Your lack of searching skills doesn't mean pester my inbox...
I do have LTE in my area, as I had 4G before I loaded the rom. I do not have an APN menu under mobile networks. Do you think it could help to dial *228 option 2 to update roaming? Or possibly a new 4G sim card?
Anything about updating I would research first and be wary of... A new SIM card could help, but I'm assuming it is not the problem. Did you make a NANDROID before you changed ROMs? You could then go back and see it you still got 4G to make it evident if your SIM card is the problem.
FIXED
Just needed a new sim card. Thanks guys. I appear to be receiving signal bars with my LTE on the GPE rom as well.
