[Q] Cant connect to kies since root - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since rooting my phone I cant connect to kies is this something I missed in the small print, anyone else have this problem? It just shows up as connecting which it never does.

Try uninstall of Kies and reinstall .
Root using CF root does not block Kies .
jje

I did the trouble shoot connection and it re-installed the kies driver. The problem is still there it just wont connect

Problem solved simply uninstall SuperSU which I am guessing will take me back to stock? The guide I used to root the phone which I cant link in this thread! had me install CF root v6.0 is this an older version there is a 6.3.
So the question now is can I root up to 6.3 safely?

Yes. Just flash the new kernel through Odin/CWM.

No, you just got rid of the app which manages root-access for programs. The kernel is still modified.

another pc
try another pc with kies installed

I rooted the phone again with 6.3 and everything worked fine. But today once again I cannot connect to kies even with a reinstall. I have the phone charging through my pc and every so often a pop up in the task bar with new hardware found galaxy S3 comes up. WTF!

Try to coonect via a different USB port - this many times solve the problem. I not know exactly why, but sometimes some of the USB ports wont let you connect to KIES.

[Q] I can't get Kies to connect to my Tab 10.1

I am completely unable to get Kies to see my 10.1 tab on my PC win 7. I always end up with an error message (Cannot start service on the devise. Please disconnect and reconnect the devise).
I tried the trouble shooting connection option, still the same no connection. Anybody have any tips on making that connection?
I always had problems with Task 14
I think mine stopped working via USB with the last update, although it worked over WiFi. Have you tried both?

WiFi works fine, but I don't see option of updating the firmware on WiFi.
In the same boat, trying to get ICS update but won't connect via kies......
wifi works fine.
The only way kies connects for me is using my unrooted backup. Any custom rom won't connect for me. Have you tried that?
I have the same problem. Tried to connect to Kies before the ICS upgrade and just now after performing the ICS upgrade. Nothing works, tried turning on USB debugging, etc.

Does factory reset work? On my HC 3.2 Kies (and USB drivers) were very finicky. Re-installed KIES/Drivers many times and only a factory reset got it primed and working. Have only seen ID mismatches once in a while after Stock ICS, but when it works Kies also recognises the tab.
my galaxy y has same problem after rooting the galaxy y by NeoX BlackStar X1....:crying:
i need to get back my contacts.......:crying:
if you are rooted, then the Tab will not connect to Kies. The same way like some Samsung applications will not work if rooted. So, there are two options that you: root and live free or stay connected to Samsung like an apple lover.... Sorry, but I am terribly upset on Samsung...
If you are stock and cannot connect... try removing all the drivers from PC (check internet for how to remove hidden devices). And try to uninstall and reinstall Kies

My rooted tab connected just fine to Kies.
What I think you mean is that if you're not running a stock ROM, you can't connect to Kies. That's probably the case. Mine is stock but rooted.

XP won't recognize sgs2 at all.

Hello, sorry for starting a new thread..
But i've read on all forums and websites still not found a solution.
I have:
Reinstalled kies
Checked all settings on the phone
Tried diffrent cables
Tried connect without kies installed
Tried with kies installed but not turned on
Rebooted phone and computer
Tried to connect in all usb "holes"
Tried using diffrent usb adapters
AND SO ON...
I've tried all things i could find..
But when i look in device manager i cant find drivers for my GT-I9100 with ICS 4.03
I'm doing everything i can come up with, and still it wont istall any drivers for my phone?
So how do i get the drivers?, if thats the problem....
EDIT: Tried with 2 diffrent computers with diffrent os, still dosent work...
Have you tried different USB ports on your computer?
Going to give it a try

1. is your phone rooted? if yes, i believe kies cannot detect rooted phone
2. definitely not the problem of XP, i have no problem with my XP, one possibility could be your XP something corrupted, suggest you try on other pc.
Kies can detects rooted phones so that is not an issue.
You could put your phone in Download mode, and connect it to your pc and then run odin. If Odin detects it then it is not your drivers. If Odin cannot find a phone then obviously there is an issue with the drivers.(btw you dont have to do anything in odin for it to find it)

It wont find it all..
But as said the problem is that i dont have drivers at all on my computer for my phone, still i have latest update of kies..
Then do waht MistahBungle says. If your drivers arent installed kies is doing something wrong. Uninstall kies, delete the entire remaining Kies folder from program files, Clean up your registry and reboot your pc.
Once you have done that, Redownload Kies from the samsung website, make sure its the windows 32 bit(x86) version(as im guessing you are running that as XP) and install it.
Once it is installed. Reboot your computer. Turn your phone on and make sure USB debugging is completely turned off and then plug the phone in to your pc.

Given you say you've tried *everything*, if it were me, I'd try a different PC. If it still doesn't work, user error; probably something really simply we're missing/you're not doing. Impossible to say what it is as we're not there with you looking over your shoulder.
Actually, I saw a thread on here last week, someone had tried everything like you & they fixed it by uninstalling Kies, removing Kies registry entries, rebooting, downloading/installing a fresh copy of Kies (for the drivers), running Windoze Update, rebooting. Fixed. Maybe try this before another PC.
You also must check Windoze Task Manager & kill Kies/any associated processes. You only want the drivers, not Kies/it's processes running when you use Odin.

Galaxy S3 will not install drivers when connected in download mode

I am trying to root my SGS3 international via Odin. The problem is that when I connect it to the computer in download mode, nothing happens. The device is not detected and the drivers are not being intalled. Worst of all ID : Com does not turn blue/yellow and the device is not added to Kies.
I have installed Kies, separate driver packs, I have tried different cables, different usb ports (on and off the mainboard of the PC), I have googled the problem for hours and still cannot figure it out.
Any advice?

You might have the same issue as I had.. I flashed a new firmware via Mobile Odin Pro.
Drivers shoudnt be installed when phone is in download mode but when its connected to the computer.. Before or after KIES is installed.
Did it work? Does anything happen at all?

Thank you for your reply.
I thought of that myself. But in order for me to use Mobile Odin Pro, I nedd to get root and in order to get root, I need to use Odin to flash the root files.
Nothing happens at all when the phone is connected to the computer in download mode. If the phone is booted in android, the drivers begin to install and Odin sees the phone (needless to say, I cannot flash while in Android mode). When I reboot in download mode, nothing happens.
have you made sure kies isn't running in the background? You need to kill all kies processes before using Odin or it may interrupt your flash. Aside from that you could uninstall kies and drivers and just try inhaling the drivers on their own? Which Windows version are you using? Xp can be problematic
Any idea whatsoever would be welcome

have seen a few reports of defective cables, but more likely a server problem or port problem, try a Google or search the threads as there have been quite a few posts regarding this matter, unfortunately I haven't got any links to hand

August 2012 post you searched and replied to very very strange .

[Q] broken USB vs. partly rooted device -> any way out?

Hi, this is my first post here.
I have an unbranded international Galaxy S3 GT-I9300, Android 4.0.4
Kernel Version: 3.0.15-928452-user
[email protected] # 1
AP: I9300XXBLG8
CP: I9300XXLG8
CSC: I9300DBTBLG6
Long story, so I better put my questions first:
How can I flash a non-rooted device without using the USB port? SD-Card somehow?? Download mode is working at least...
and/or
How can I remove a Super SU system app from a apparently non-rooted device? (...which can not be rooted by using the USB port)
What happened:
I had rooted my device via this instuctions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1695238
-> [03.07.2012] CF-Root 6.4 - SuperSU+CWM5.5+CWMManager.
I used heimdall 1.3.1 on Ubuntu 12.04 via 'sudo heimdall flash --recovery recovery.img --cache cache.img'
All worked fine.
When the latest OTA firmware showed up a couple of days age (45,76MB) I tried it and it failed at 29%.
I remebered I had deleted some bloatware and thought maybe bringing it back would make the OTA work. Because I coudn't find Samsung Video Hub at some point I thought it would be the easiest to just factory reset, then run OTA and reroot.
I made lots of backups with Titanium Backup ROOT and I rolled back the BusyBox changes. I also reverted some later installed App to a non-system App again but am not sure which one, it was not Super SU, maybe the terminal app.
I then made a factory reset from within Android, on reboot CWM appeared and I choose the single one 'yes, delete all data'
After rebooting I tried to apply the OTA, still stuck at 29%
I realized that there ist still Super SU left as a system app and thought that might be the reason. However I decided to first give Kies a try with the update.
Installing Kies and connecting the phone (via my gf's Xperia Ray cable) went fine and it showed me the update. Because of memory shortage I had to move some things around, time passes, my gf sit down on her office chair and somehow remaind hanging on the usb cable,
my phone fell down. At first there doesn;t seem to be any problem, but after trying to reconnect to Kies, it didn;t work. I found the USB cable not working anymore, which means that no mobile is charged if connected via that cable now.
However I could not establish a connection from my phone to a computer again since then (original usb cable, another usb cable).
Not to Ubuntu (not recognized in heimdall), neither to any of 2 different windows 7 computers.
I know there is a lot of connection problems out there for S3, I cleaned the connector, and tried lots of stuff like not giving google account credentials after wipe, try different usb-ports, restart computer. Windows always says "Unknow device" now. Ubuntu, also heimdall 1.3.2 just says nothing.
Thats why I guess that somehow there is a hardware problem with the USB connector on the phone now. Charging and MHL is working. It also recognizes USB OTG cable, but not the things that I attach to it, it worked flawless before. USB Debugging on/off -> no difference. Also the option to switch MTP/PTP under Preferences->Storge->USB is gone (was there before my first reset)
As a side note, also WLAN is not working as before anymore, I always have to use a static IP to get connected to my FritzBox.
Because the ruins of SuperSU are still in the system I can not update. However the phone is not rooted as all apps I have tried claim. Reinstalling Super SU did not bring root back. It is there, it thinks the device is rooted but it is not. But I also can not get rid of Super SU.
So now, I can't use normal OTA update, can't reroot or use my backups, bc Titanium requires root.
I am stuck. Is there any way out? Or at least a direction?
Thank you for taking the time.

Hi. First of all you can have ota updates with kies even if you are rooted as long as you haveone of the official roms installed. Su does not disturb your ota updates through kies. You wont be able to have ota if you are rooted without kies.
R u sure you tried other usb cables and your connection failed? Try another one......You are saying you can charge....These cables have got a lot of thiny cables inside. Even if one is damaged you will have a problem.Try a new Samsung cable.
In the worst case if there is a hardware issue after the fall try kies wireless app so you connect to the pc without cable.
How do you connect to your FritzBox?
looks bad

I tried with two different cables (Samsung, Lenovo) on 2 different computers. What makes me quite certain that there is an issue with the usb connector is, that USB OTG is not working anymore. No matter what I connect, the only thing it recognizes is the usb otg cable itself, but no stick/mouse/hub.
The cable which is broken now is the SE Xperia Ray cable from my gf's phone.

I tried it, it seems that the Kies Air App as well as Kies over WLAN (via Androids Preferences to connect to the Kies Desktop Application) does not support any firmware updating. I connect to the fritzbox via WLAN, it worked flawless before and I haven't changed anything.
It seems I have the following options:
1. find a way to reroot or flash the phone without using the usb connector (I read somewhere that it should be possible, but no further instructions were given)
2. find a way to remove the left overs from rooting (Super SU) -> that would at least open the possibility to apply OTAs
3. send it to samsung and hope they will repair it (problem is there are still traces of rooting on the phone)
4. try to repair the broken usb-connector myself
5. continue to try to somehow establish a connection via usb
Concerning option #1: I have unsuccesfully looked into the following options: unrevoked, UniversallAndroot, Z4root
All threads I read say it's not possible (e.g. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1870267&highlight=root+without+usb)
If I can't make any use of the leftovers of Super SU I think option 1+2 are dead ends.
I think I should try option 3 and if they deny, try option 4 or live with an unupdateable (?) unrooted phone (nah )
If there is SuperSU in system/app folder than it should work. Try to use build in options in SuperSU to reinstall. Also download and install busybox.
If root will be present and give you all needed partitions than you will be able to use Mobile Odin to flash stock firmware. But you also must remove binary counter information. This is imposible without root and/or working USB port.
There is a small chance that after flashing stock firmware USB port will be fully operational once again. I suppose it could be a software/driver issue, not hardware malfunction.
You can try to flash first with Everoot option enabled and after that check your USB connection. Of course you must transfer stock firmware to your phone. Do this via AirDroid or write it on external sd card on computer and put it into your phone. (copy this firmware to your internal sd card, it's better to flash from internal memory).
To resurrect your phone you need root or working USB.

The App in system/app is called Superuser.apk (if that makes a difference), from inside the App I can see it is SuperSU v0.93.
There is an update available in the playstore which I can apply.
If I start any app which requires root (BusyBox, Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, Root Checker) I get the Superuser prompt to decide if I want to grant root access. Even if I choose "Yes" it never works.
Using the options inside SuperSU to reinstall fails (it does not close) as long as I don't have the update of SuperSU installed. If that is in place. It will close and left me with the former SuperSU version. Same for the option to "switch to another Superuser App" and "complete unroot".
If I try to remove the check from the box saying "activate Superuser" it tells me "Uninstallation failed"
SuperSU is there, Root access not. The only thing I can think of is do a factory reset once more (already did a couple) and try again.
It seems like there is a solution just behind the next door but I can't get through...
It's very strange, indeed.
Try hard reset service code:
*2767*3855# - hard reset
I don't have any other ideas. Service center will refuse fixing it if there are root traces. But you can try to find someone with jtag box to flash stock firmware or replace USB circuit on your own if you are sure that's faulty.

Tried it, but situation remains unchanged, SuperSU is there, root access not, uninstall/reinstall it has no effect
OTA still hanging at 29%
no usb connection
no wireless connection unless I use a static ip
At least the phone is working as is...
Will probably send it to service center b/c I have nothing to loose. Maybe try to use my gf's insurance on beforehand.
If all fails, open the device or live with it, not sure.

No as we still have no way of flashing stock from phone without recovery .
it was just thinking aloud anyway .
What is required is a method to root from within the phone which we don't have .

[Q] Root when phone is not detected

Hello everyone, I could not find a good title for my issue but I will try to explain as well as I can. I own a GT-I9300 (International), but since last official Samsung's firmware update(Jelly Bean 4.3) I am not able to get my phone recognized by my computer. Phone is connected and it charges, but neither Windows or Ubuntu recognizes it as a portable device. I am concerned about UMS is not available on device, but my phone it does not even get detected! I also own a Galaxy SII (4.1.2) and it does get detected by my PC. I think that flashing a custom ROM could solve the problem, since it appeared when I updated official firmware, but the thing is that I cannot root my phone! Tried ODIN but since my phone does not get detected, ODIN does not do its job. I also tried rooting with framaroot and towelroot, but no success: first one says "Failed , try another exploit" but there is only one. And the last one says my phone is not currently supported, even if I change modstrings.
So here is my question: how do I root my phone? I don't know what else I could try. I have already reinstalled Kies and Samsung USB drivers but still not working. Also hard-resetted but no luck.
Hope you guys can help me out because this is really getting on my nerves
Thanks in advance!

The thing is that my phone is the only one that do not get detected every single time I connect it. I have already connected one GT-I9100 and GT-S6790L and both get detected. I already tried on 3 different Virtual Machines with Windows XP, Ubuntu, Windows 8.1 but no luck.
As I said in the first post, I think it's a firmware problem since it appeared when I did the official update, which was this one:
Model GT-I9300
Model name GALAXY S III
Country Argentina
Version Android 4.3
Build date Wed, 05 Nov 2014 20:33:08 +0000
PDA I9300UBUGNK1
CSC I9300UVOUGNK1
MODEM I9300UBUGNK1

I can see your frustration Now a few things technically it is a misconception that you need root to flash a custom rom you can actually flash a custom recovery with Odin full wipe and then flash a custom rom from custom recovery (only thing is you will lose all your data because you need root to back up your data)
Now I know the above statement is not very helpful because as you said Odin doesn't detect it (but I thought I would mention it anyway )
The reason framaroot and towelroot, didn't work is because at the moment the only way to root S3 is with Odin.:crying:
You may have tried this but I will mention it anyway first uninstal Kies and all Samsung drivers from your computer ( kies can interfere with Odin) Then try installing these drivers here >> http://developer.samsung.com/techni...Lhp1GqlWRy92Q60CX6PP1mF!80806326?v=T000000117 << If you have tried this then sorry.
Also when you connect the phone go to Device manager in Windows and try to look for your device ( it may say unkown device) it should have a warning triangle right click on it select update driver software and then select browse from my computer and point to the drivers that you have downloaded see if that works.
Another thing to note is if you are using Windows 8 you need to disable Driver signature in start up options ( Google it) for Windows to recognize the drivers.

I already tried uninstalling Kies and Samsung drivers. Also I tried looking for device on Device Manager but it does not appear when I plugin my S3, but it does appear when I connect other devices like S2 or Galaxy Fame Lite. They appear as portable devices.
I'm using Windows 7 on my PC and have already tried with different OS over Virtual Machines and still doesn't work.
And thanks for that note, didn't know there was possible to flash a Custom Recovery without root, but I can't since ODIN doesn't detect device :crying:
Then it looks like you are running out of options I would use another computer not Virtual Machines
Okay I'll give it a try but as I said before, looks like an firmware issue, not computer's. Why would my computer detects two another Samsung devices but not mine (which used to work until last update)
Me, too!
I'm having a similar problem. Last week my GS3 stopped working, and I bought another one from Ebay with a cracked screen and swapped out motherboards. The phone seems to work as well as a stock Verizon phone on Jellybean would, but I can't get my Linux, Win 8, or Win XP computers to even recognize that it's attached. Different cables, each and every one of the USB ports, not even a blip. Device Manager in Windows doesn't even see it, and yes I got the developer options unlocked and have enabled USB debugging.
I've got the Samsung drivers installed, and tried to install the CWM device drivers from the SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT V9, but there was an error and that didn't work, either.
USB connection issues are usually due to Windows conflicts, driver problems or the lead itself. If all these have been excluded then you have either a firmware issue in the bootloader, which is very uncommon, or a hardware problem. The usb port is easily worn/damaged/dirty also the motherboard might be the cause.
There is no silver bullet to cure, test each possible thoroughly.

I'm 100 percent sure that it is not due a Windows issue, I have already test every option. I have not considered the usb port to be damaged or worn, which could be possible but phone charges every time I connect it to computer. It just does not get detected as a device. But in order to assume it is a motherboard issue I will have to put away my feeling that the problem is caused by last OTA official update, since this problem started there.
If it is a firmware update issue, is it any option to flash another ROM?

As I said on previous posts, I have already installed and reinstalled Samsung USB drivers and made a factory reset -one from config. option and another one from Android stock recovery 3e (since I cannot install any advanced recovery -or even root it- to flash a custom rom). Doing those factory reset did not downgrade my last firmware update (when all my problems started).
I also said on previous posts that I tried towelroot and framaroot with no success. As tallman43 says, seems like international version of S3 does not support those kind of one-click to root apps.
-----------------------------------------------------
So far the only options available (if my theory about latest firmware update is the problematic one) are:
● downgrade firmware: [Q] How? Odin is not working since my phone does not get detected;
● root my phone in order to install an advanced recovery and flash a new ROM: [Q] Any way of rooting phone without computer (apart from towelroot or framaroot because I have tried and do not work for me)? I read one XDA post from 2 years ago to root S3 via console apk but latest comments assumes that method stopped working.
● install an advanced recovery without odin or root: [Q] How?
● fix USB firmware issue: [Q] I have completely no idea how to do it. (Already played with *#7284# and *#0808# but did not get my phone detected)
Please I need help, this is really irritating me and I am running out of ideas

I guess I have found out what the problem was. It was not firmware (as I thought). It was the micro USB port (as boomboomer said) which seems to not be firmly attached to the PCB. AC charging just seems to work okay, but not USB connections. I managed to figure it out by forcing the USB in a specific position to get it detected for 5 seconds, but then it disappeared.
Yeah, it was not as complex as I thought! I will try to replace that micro USB port as soon as possible, thanks everyone for your help!
