Wow how does that idiot have a job, the comments are the best part of the article.

Reading articles like this are a waste of time.
Most, if not all, of the great things he mentions ios6 can do now we can already do on android?!?
Bring it on!!!
I never liked bgr. Articles this bad prove I definitely wasn't wrong about that
I want the 2 the two minutes I wasted reading this nonsense back.
I'll agree that android was pretty feature limited..... Back in the days of the Dream. ICS brings Android to a whole new level.

OMG! I've never read something soooooo absurd in my life!
ONE Android app is capable of doing EVERYTHING any iphone will EVER be capable of...and here's the funny part. It's been around for over a year!
How in the hell is this prick even a journalist? I mean seriously. I understand Apple fanaticism, I don't like it but I understand it...I suppose.
This guy on the other hand takes ignorance to a whole other level!
Wow what really ices the cake is its Boy Genius (Geller) himself who wrote it. No one in the comments noticed AFAIK .
The do not disturb feature he jizzed over makes me question if he ever really used android. Hell Google Voice even.
So much fail from a great insider.

I'm sick of Android, I can't wait for iOS6 to come along so I can enjoy better features on my future iPhone 5. This phone is great but Android really bogs it down; I wish it ran iOS. Most fluid mobile OS and it just works.

Ok, I came from iPhone 4 and now when I want to send a photo in my Gmail app it does not resize them, sends them in 8 mpix !!! Are they so stupid that they cannot copy that feature from iOS or I am stupid and dont know how ? Basically, when I add photo on iPhone it asks me if I want small, medium, large or original and on every mode it says how big it would be, like "Small (96 KB)". Now I have sent one photo and it has sent 2,5 Mb which is insane.
Any help for this ?
Tnx
It is not a feature of the Gmail app. If you want to resize, you'd have to do it first using a different application.
Tnx, and then people call iPhone dummy phone, yea right, so much normal things are missing on Android. Today I also realized that I cant go oflline in Facebook chat on my phone, maybe I can but as soon as I get in the Facebook app again then I am again online for good, I really think that iOS app developers are waaaay smarter and more polished than Android app developers, and also have better taste because EVERY app looks nicer when it is for iOS, is it so hard to take some nice looking font and colors so the app looks nice. Obviously it is. Only thing that is better is Handcent app.
Sounds like you bought the wrong phone.

I think so too by the sound of it, but wait - imagine not being able to change your homescreen or even worse the battery, etc, etc the list goes on!!!
I come from white iPhone 4 to white SGS II ) I am realistic, there are basic things that iPhone is missing but surely there are basic things that Android is missing, at least in 2.3.3 version, I hope ICS will be better. But that aside, the look of iOS apps are not comparable to Android. Can someone explain me if the same developers are making lets say Skype, why they cant make them IDENTICAL !? If they cannot make it identical inside, why do they change the look, colors and font and Android ALWAYS looks worse, I dont get it, it looks like only iPhone users are classy people and Android users are second class, like stupid old Symbian which became offense to intelligence how old it looked and costed like something on top.
And that Facebook app on Android cannot be in the same sentence with iOS app, the look, the functionality, the speed.
Well if that is so then you should return to an iphone. No one should really stick with something they don't like.
$1 gets you a reply
So here is forbidden to talk about Android flaws !? I thought that iPhone users are blind sheeps and now it seems that Android has some blind folowers ! If something is bad than you should be a man/woman and openly say it, not hide it and think that you have the best phone in the world., jeez. Ive told that both of those OS have flaws and that is opinion of every normal man, only idiot can tell that there is a phone that is pefect.

You have a very aggressive writing style. No-one has said you can't talk about a "flaw" (it's not by the way, it's a feature request), we just can't change it.
If you want it changed, voice your opinion to Google. Venting with flame bait here isn't going to get you a new feature added.
No, we're not forbidden to talk about Android flaws. And nobody here claims their phone is perfect.
It just seems that Android pisses you off enough that the SGS2 shouldn't be the phone for you to use on a daily basis.
I hear the resale value for the iPhone4 is still pretty good. Probably best to sell it and then get the iPhone 4S.
Sorry if it sounded aggressive but when I tell that something is stupid on my phone most of the answers are go back on iPhone, I didnt tell that iPhone is better overall but I know what I miss from it and I dont like it because I cant have that now, there iz no Cydia which could make those tweaks.
I have waited for iPhone 5 and when I saw this s**t called 4S I immediately went for SGS II even tough Ive had BAD experience with SGS I, this one is not comparable with the first model.
Cheers
So, i just came across this where the protocol of siri has been cracked and can now be ported to the original ipad + Android devices.
Looks like this can be done by an experienced developer, so posting it here.
Hope some genius can come out with some good results for all of us, and make his money too

hmm.... i just found out that siri user apple server for 'her' artificial intelegence.
i though it was on iPhone 4, so 3gs can't taste siri.
anyway, this is great effort.

Why would anyone port siri for android? Ever heard of google search? Come built in with android os since android came out to the market. Use the voice action of the app and it will do the same thing that siri does.. without the sarcastic answers that apple thought will save the craphone. Siri is just apple's varsion of google's google search. But if you are looking to ask her to marry you or find you a spot to dump a body, you should look out and see that there is life beyond sitting infront of the computer and hoping it will answer.

Well siri seems better at recognising voice commands... I used Iris which uses the wolframalpha database just like siri, and the only problem seems to be with the google voice recogniser api (probably cause i'm not american and it's not optimised for anyone but)... would be nice if it could recognise perfectly atleast but i guess that's google's work to do....

As much of a gimmick as Siri is, Apple has managed to get itself a lot of attention. I guess it does not hurt that the media seems to ignore most smartphone technology until it is on the iPhone.

Deviation from topic???? that too from a MOD????
Actually google's voice search api is pretty good.. only not so much at recognising other accents.. which isnt really google's fault really... I mean there's no accent that u can TRULY call 'Indian" for instance... based on the latitude, I can see around 5 accents quite different from each other really....
American users: does it work well for you? I mean does google voice search generally transcribe voice to words correctly???

Well it works pretty well most of the time, however I do sometimes have to intentionally mispronounce some words, names for instance, and then sometimes the thing is totally in left field; still it is pretty good most of the time. I used voice dial in front of one of my many iPhone toting friends recently, and his jaw dropped...( and voice dial isn't exactly new...)

GV works 80% of the time for me as well and I have a 'midwestern' accent, or no accent. Sometimes the results are just weird
What really pisses me off is that I can't get it to understand "Mimi's Cafe" for the life of me, it interprets it as "Nini's Cafe".
Why it's trained to come up with a single restaurant close to Google HQ instead of the name of a decent sized chain restaurant is just too Bay Area centric.

Hmmm for me it's actually pretty terrible actually.. I tried English (Generic) and English(India) accents in GV settings.. and in both cases it generally doesnt recognise a word i say... it is quite entertaining at first but annoying eventually... I remember saying "Forum Mall" (like..."fohrummma mawla") and the best it got is "Form One"
So actually if Siri's voice recognition is better... and Apple does NOT mind (and they WILL mind) we could probably use only siri's VR engine.. (I say "probably" cause i'm not a dev.. just an enthusiast)

You are still right abt apple though
There is an app in the market and I'm sorry I can't remember the name but i downloaded it a while ago a.d it did most of what siri does. You could ask it random things and it would answer it would also preform actions on the phone just by speaking. But in talking to it I pissed it off then he wouldn't talk to me for 5 minutes. So my response was uninstalling it
Was it called iris?

As mentioned above, I've really had good experiences with google's own voice recognition stuff.
I'm looking for an app I can install on my two teenage daughters phone that will enable me to view their text messages from my phone. And the app would need to be hidden so that they wouldn't be able to see it.
Googling didn't really help aside from links to expensive spying software that's a bit more than I need.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
You can use an app that backs up the text messages to a gmail account like SMS Backup+. However if they delete the message before it gets backed up, you won't see it.
You can also have them use the AT&T Messages app. It allows you to look at messages through your PC.
There's an app/service called MobileSpy that records all that stuff to a server that you can log in & view anytime. I used it back when I had a couple people working for me with Blackberrys, but I think it works for Android & other OS's. I can't remember how much it cost but it wasn't cheap.. maybe $30 every quarter or something like that for each device. It recorded sms, calls, some email, gps, etc.. & it worked really well for me..

Thanks for the app suggestions so far.
As to the parenting disagreement decisions. Well I told my kids from the get go that if they wanted Facebook accts and cell phones with texting I would be checking their texts and their Facebook pages and private messages.
I meet their friends, I meet the parents of their friends if they want to spend the night...in other words, I want to know what's going on in their lives.
I'm not their friend; I'm their parent. I'm more than okay with them thinking I'm over protective. Despite how that sounds, I'm not some overly strict jerk disciplinarian parent.
Anyway, I'd prefer that this thread didn't get into a discussion of parenting opinions. If you don't agree with me, that's cool.

Be careful with this route. I'm not a parent at all. I know someone with parents that have done the same as you. Spying on Facebook and texts. Let's just say that this led to him rebellion and sneaking around the parents back. Doing drugs, going out to the wrong places, and secret Facebook accounts.

I had a girlfriend who was treated that way. She went nuts when she got a little freedom because she was always so sheltered and monitored. The kind of stuff that makes one a star on GGW. With all due respect. No offense meant.
I appreciate the replies and concerns. But a parent doesn't cause a kid to go crazy and rebel and start doing drugs. People choose how they act/react to situations.
I'be always been upfront with my daughters that I will check their texts and Facebook. There's nothing wrong with being monitored.
And they're far from sheltered. They listen to the music they want, wear the clothes they want (within reason), have phones and laptops, go to concerts, comic conventions, play sports, we talk openly about drugs and sex.

Oh good grief. I'm not sure what the point of your response is or even why you responded. They can't wear mini skirts, can only have ear and nose piercings, can't be alone with a boy unsupervised in a house, and must keep their grades at C's or better if they want dyed hair (my oldest currently has purple with red streaks), and usually are required to be in at 6pm so that we all sit down as a family to eat supper. I can see why they should hate me.
With me getting them to a combination of pom, drivers ed, soccer, private guitar lessons, and the oldests metal band practice we get plenty of time for talks, and they are not afraid to come to me because I'm not quick to anger and I stay non judgemental. I can count on one hand the number of times I've spanked both of them and I haven't even raised my voice to either of them in years.
They most certainly didn't hate me when I surprised them by taking them to Snoop Dogg a few weeks back.
Oh. And just so you know, I have a bachelors in education and a graduate degree in psychology.

Click here to subscribe to this thread. I recommend it!
I'm a fellow Nexus 10 owner. I love my device, but I'm a bit tired of facing applications that are low-resolution and unoptimized for the incredible display we have on the Nexus 10. Even tablet-optimized apps are lacking. Aren't you frustrated? Hence, I thought we could do something about it as a community.
Which is the purpose of this thread!
Here's how it will work. This first post will serve as a compilation of all the petitions made to any and all developers to optimize their applications for tablets, and also the Nexus 10's display. Any subsequent posts in this thread shall be for petition requests and discussion, which I will personally put together and post up to the petition site being used for this purpose (Care2 as of this thread's posting). I will then add a direct link to that petition to this thread, sorted by category. Feel free to make any suggestions or to criticize! I will also start us off with a petition I have already created myself: to the developers of the Bloons TD series of games, Ninja Kiwi.
I'll try to keep things simple! Keep on topic, please, and try your best to sign each and every petition. Its the only way we'll be able to actually push developers to optimize their applications for tablets like ours! So, without further ado, let us begin!

Bloons TD 5 - Optimize Bloons TD 5 for Android Tablets
-----

Facebook - Optimize Facebook for Android Tablets
Instagram - Optimize Instagram for Android Tablets

This is likely Google's job, not ours. In any event, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are three that immediately spring to mind. Not because they are low resolution -- not sure what you mean there -- but because the layouts are so clearly designed for smaller screens. I shouldn't have to opt for Friendcaster, Tabstagram, and Plume.

No, it's the app devs job. The point of this is to show them that there is a need for this to be done by enough of their user base to merit the work hours it will take them to implement it. What they don't know ends up hurting us. It is actually an excellent idea.
A dedicated Facebook app should be a priority. My mate has an iPad and I found myself looking longingly at the sickness of the dedicated app. Something needs to be done to put a stop to this sick perversion!

Its the job of the application developers to get out proper apps. Google has done TONS of work already. Now we need to show these guys that we, the users, actually care about proper tablet applications, and that it is worth the investment.
Thats why I created this thread - if we don't do something about it, no-one will! I'm going to try to get as many signatures as possible, and I'm going to spread this thread across multiple forums if necessary. AndroidTablets.net springs to mind.

No, it's the app devs job. The point of this is to show them that there is a need for this to be done by enough of their user base to merit the work hours it will take them to implement it. What they don't know ends up hurting us. It is actually an excellent idea.

I would tend to agree with Brees on this one, which you could probably guess. I think Brees put it excellently!
Exactly! I'm tired of this sort of thing. This needs to be put to a stop. I'll create the petition.

You'll excuse me if I seem overly cynical about this. I used to be a BlackBerry user. Well over two years ago, some folks on Crackberry launched a campaign to bombard Reid Hastings, the president of Netflix, with email to get Netflix on the BlackBerry platform (the OS 6 devices like the Torch had then fairly recently come out). If you are familiar with Crackberry, you know that they are a rabid, fanatical horde. Nothing happened. Then came the petitions -- change.org and the like. They are still going on more than two years plus later, and despite the fact that BlackBerry now has quite decent phones and a decent OS in BB10, there is still no Netflix on the platform.
EDIT: Holy! I already have 4 signatures for Facebook on Android Tablets and I haven't even posted it anywhere yet! That shows something.
C'mon guys, I'll post it up in the main thread. Vote for it now!

I think your points make sense, but they aren't a valid reason really to cause Netflix to develop for BB10. The marketshare simply isn't there.
With Android, however, the market has shown that it is a valid platform (and I hate to say that as if it was an option - c'mon. ANDROID IS AWESOME! ); it makes sense for them to update, and it only helps us out. We need to show them that we actually CARE. If they understand that, then they will update for us without question. If they have any business sense, that is.
Same with BB10 (which is, quite frankly, a very nice OS - it even has NFC Beaming support between BB and Android devices). If they had the market AND Crackberry screaming like it was/is, they would get a proper app quite quickly.
This deserved a quick update post: the petitions for Facebook and Instagram are now online. Facebook already has a few votes!
I just signed Facebook one.

BB's problem is definitely rooted in market share, something that Android in general obviously has no problem with. But the numbers dwindle considerably when you're talking about Android tablet market share, and then on top of that, you've got to consider how many Android tablet users really care that there are some apps that are just scaled up phone versions. Apple cared enough to do something about it -- remember that was one of the criticisms of the first iPad, i.e., that it seemed just like a oversized iPod. Google has not been responsive on this front (nor on others for that matter).
Anyway, I don't want to discourage anyone, so have at it.

Don't worry, you're not discouraging (me, at least).
Android Tablet market share has been steadily on the rise - in fact, it rivals the iPad. According to many statistics, they are slated to pass (if they have not already) Apple devices in tablet market share by the 3rd quarter. I listed 3 (or 4?) links in all of the petitions.
As for Google, they have been doing a great job lately. They added dedicated tablet sections to Google Play, and have been pushing developers to adhere to the guidelines constantly. I say keep up that pressure!

Thanks! We need more people like you here. Keep it up!
As for everyone else, keep an eye out for new petitions; and, most importantly of all:
SIGN THEM!!!!
We have hundreds of views on this thread, yet most people don't seem to want to take 60 seconds and sign the petitions, oddly enough. And this is a Nexus 10 forum. Keep it up, anyway! We CAN do this with enough time.

One of these days I plan to actually try to learn some Android development; I'll be sure to make whatever apps I make optimized for the N10 though :good:
Hi everyone,
This is a post to existing ROM developers. A childhood dream of mine has always been to create a technology that makes any type of connected device intelligent in a general way. This is a goal that is now real in version 1.0 and is currently being integrated into an automation app.
You can see a CONCEPT video here (though, because Engadget never talked to me, the entire article is based on assumptions from the author. There is an awesome data privacy/control model in place and the tech doesn't "think" for you lol):
Doesn't look like I'm senior enough to post a link. So Google "Kimera Systems Engagdet" and the video will be the first result
And a recent tech meetup presentation with quick demo here (what tech can do today and how it is expected to evolve in 2014):
In the ideal world this type of AI is integrated deeper into the ROM to enable a real device experience rather than an app experience. And that's the point of this post. At some point we'll open up the framework (a API to a user's "personal cloud" - Because each user owns their own data and can host their cloud anywhere they want, each users API will have its own endpoint url) for anyone who wishes to integrate AI into their ROM, launcher, or app. But today we're too early for a general release and instead looking to partner with an existing developer who can see the long term potential.
If you're a ROM developer and interested in at least learning more, PM me and we can have an initial chat.
PS. Has to be for a Sprint Samsung Note 3 ROM. Why? I have that device and obviously for me to support you on development .... well, it would be ideal for me being able to run your ROM And also, since Note 3 is by far the absolute best device out there, I'm curious how you can innovate the user experience with this technology to something even better few people can imagine.
This sounds really interesting. I would like some more info if possible, unfortunately just that since I don't have an N3 (Sprint S3 instead).
And here's the link for others: http://www.engadget.com/2012/10/13/kimera-systems-wants-your-smartphone-to-think-for-you/
I thought google was working on this and it was named project "Majel", which is a reference to Majel Barrett of Star Trek fame for anybody in the know
Interesting!

Mind blowing, every time when I see something like this happening with technology I wonder that most of the things we saw in Si-Fi movies are about to come real. it's started, messing up with AI has started at right time and we are very fortunate to see something incredible in upcoming years.

Yeah, like Skynet and T1000 Military robots/drones. It will be awesome to be oppressed by our governments with AI! I cannot wait!

In short (okay, maybe not short) we built the technology to focus on
Allowing any connected device to understand the world the same way you do. That means "human-like intelligence' (and I believe we're the first one to have cracked that nut) and the ability for your devices to mimic your personality.
Complete data privacy. I hate the idea that 3rd party companies own and control your data and literally turning you into a product they can sell to advertisers. So we've implemented a "personal cloud" solution. The idea is that instead of all your Android devices connected to Google server farm, or Facebook server farm when starting your FB app, or Apple server farm for iOS etc....I want us to get to a point where all your devices connect to your personal cloud and that you can host your cloud anywhere you want so that you have full control over it. This means no one, including my startup, will ever get into a position to controlling the intelligence or data on the global network. Or in other words, no NSA and no Skynet.
This is the most important part: Devices need to understand "WHY?". Why are you doing this or that? etc. Anyone who can answer the question why exhibits real human intelligence. That is the main point of this AI.
From a practical standpoint, the AI really interconnects these personal clouds in specific ways so that they can "produce" intelligence. The result is an "intelligence briefing" that is sent to the device allowing the device to understand what is going on and why and provide information where the device can find apps, services, content so that device can automatically connect to the app. (no app stores or social networks or commerce platforms, just direct from user to service/product/app provider).
Kind went into the technical details here, but hopefully it answered your question
And thank you for posting the link

I guess the real money in the future is to develop "psychiatric therapy centers" for electronic devices AI. if is going to be "human-like intelligence''... LOL now you're one step ahead of the curve.

LOL! If it is being designed by a man you better believe that! The ultimate punishment will be having the device deactivated and being forced to run the Palm OS for the rest of its life.

I had used the palm treo for a while. It was cool for one of the first "operating system based phones", but maybe going back, since after not using it for so long, I would probably have to concur lol. I need to pick one up and play with it again.

The Palm OS was my favorite back in the days but times change and we have to adapt and keep with the times. Palm OS was good for it's time. The funny thing is Android approached Palm first to throw their OS in their phone but Palm told android to F-off. That decision F-ed Palm and now they are no longer making smartphones.
