Hey there, was trying out the multitasking on the phone and am experiencing RAM shortage? 2GB would have been great, but as I had the GSII I know that there is a lot more capability with 1GB..
On my GSII I could run more apps in the background than now. With the GSIII I can only have 3 apps working at the same time?! Everything keeps refreshing.. the browser, the launcher etc. Even the music stops sometimes while multitasking...
Anyone facing the same issue?

I mean you should check the task manager, if you can get more than 4 apps to run?

Apart from the odd occassional main home screen refresh now and again, nothing out of the ordinary for me.
Stock ROM, but running a themed screen and icons with Go Launcher.
Might be worth looking at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634624
Some useful hints and tips on closing/removing apps. I personally just disabled them, made the mistake of removing some core ones from my GNex and made a right royal mess.
Good luck, let us know how you get on. :good:
Thank you for the useful thread you posted, but I didn't have to remove bloatware on my gsII to multitask? Even though I did remove it after a while it still worked before doing anything. I just can't imagine Samsung will ship a phone, where you have to remove apps to multitask properly?
So you can run more than 4 apps in the task manager?
Sad we in Europe didn't get the choice like in the U.S.between the two versions. As I feel the RAM would have been more future proof..
But putting this aside, I'm really impressed what they have packed into the touchwiz out of the box ! I don't even feel like rooting and flashing, because everything is running just fine.
As I know myself I'll find myself fondling around pretty soon, because Iknow the potential of xda
Just am facing this issue, which is really bugging me atm.

I've got about 10 apps so far showing when I press the task manager button, no signs of lag so far for me.
Memory usage for me is 644Mb out of 779Mb.
Can't think of anything preventing you from opening more than 4 apps on the go.
No that thing you are seeing is the recent apps menu! That is just a chronology of what you opened recently and is no real time multitasking! In that menu you have to press "task-manager". There you'll see the apps which are truly running
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
Yeah, I did say I pressed the Task Manager button, maybe I should'be been more clear on what I pressed and where it took me.
Anyways, I've attached a picture to clarify that I had at least 10 apps running.
You didn't tweak around the Developer options have you by any chance? Near the end of the list there is a section that says Limit background processes, mine has Standard limit, if clicked, options include No background processes, 1,2,3,4 processes at most.
If it's not that, then I'm out of ideas.
I don't own the sg3 (plan on buying one soon), but I know that in ICS there is an option in settings under developer options where you can set the number of apps allowed to run in the background.
Worth a shot.
Gold luck.

Thanks for your effort mate!
At least now I know, that something isn't right with my phone... I had checked the developers options before, it was set on standard... I haven't done anything with the phone yet, that's the funny thing :/
I'll check what else I can do when I'M home from work.
I just noticed the issue when I was trying out the chrome and stock browser simultaneously. but the pages were all reloading. Which was not the case on sII.
really weird..

I also face this problem of all webpages reloading all the time after switching apps.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
That happens when your phone runs out of memory, are you sure you're not running too many background apps?
Browsers are huge memory hogs, so it's not really surprising when you run 2 at the same time, but it all depends on the amount of open tabs and the webpages within.
The same "issue" appears on S2 (Stock an CM9) and with somewhat heavier usage on the Note.
no issues at all 1gb is perfect i dont need more

Just for the record I love the phone but my browser is the only thing running and my home screen has just redrawn
Hey guys I'm back ..
Now I can open more apps simultaneously, but around after a minute everything closes down. They don't stay on they just close after a while..
I don't know what the reason is, but could you check and open a few apps? Then just look after a minute or so if they close down .

I don't know what the deal is but this is continually happening to me and across different roms. I am using the built in "Task Manager" feature of touchwiz to monitor what processes are using my cpu. I am finding that some things are sitting there using between 15-45% cpu at all times even when in the background. For example:
Today right before my lunch I checked the task manager, I stared at it for 2 minutes to make sure there was no cpu activity, when I saw that everything looked to me normal I clocked out for my lunch and left work. By the time I was done eating (my phone had been in my pocket the entire time by the way) I checked my phone to see what time it was and noticed that I had lost about 12% battery life in 30 minutes. I immediately opened task manager and found that Browser was in the red and running at a constant 45% cpu usage. I immediately exited the browser. I find that this is happening with other apps as well.
What could be causing this? And more importantly will ICS fix it?
Interesting. Browsers are always killing it for me.
For example I use Dolphin Browser. The ad-dons like Google services and tab switcher kill battery like a mother and also put a ton of CPU stress on the processor.
Only thing I can say is make sure to close out all apps because apps running in a background may run rampant.
Yeah that shouldn't be happening.
I do hope a feature is implemented into android to have a 'do not run list' unless opened by user.

What I've resorted to is closing all web pages when im done and backing out of apps that I know have started to run out of control sometimes. There has to be an easier way though.
What about times like today when im researching something and have to run out for lunch and just throw my phone in my pocket with 8 browser windows open? I have to go back and find all the pages because I had to close them all out in fear that my battery would drain?
There has to be a better way. I switched to android bevaseu of the horrible memory management apple has. I would hate to leave android beacuse it couldnt control backgournd processes and let my battery be destroyed.
Memory management is good on these phones. Bad memory management causes slow downs.
What you're looking for is app management. I know some may jump on the me for saying anything about a task manager, but you might want to try one out.
Though I'd only recommend using it for the programs you're having issues with. Set it to 'only' kill the problem apps. Not any other apps or system processes.
What browser are you using? If it's happened across multiple roms, it may be an issue with that browser. Better to treat the problem (the app) than the symptom (battery getting drained)

Well see its happening with the same apps across different roms so I know its either an android problem or a touchwiz problem. Can you reccomend any apps that will auto close apps if they start using too much CPU or an app that would allow auto kill on exit? Thank you.
There's not any apps like that, at least yet. Task killers kill whether the app is using alot of cpu or not.
What apps are causing you issues? Have you compared what apps you have on your phone to entropy512's thread about known battery drainers?

OK my phone has been acting weird for a while. I have a Samsung Vibrant, running CyanogenMod 7. Now when I have freshly done a wipe, the thing runs like a dream. Menus open and close with no problem, no delays or anything when opening the dialer or gallery. I can't say how many apps I have on my phone, but usually when I load about 35-40 different apps, my phone basically becomes almost unusable.
I will press the dialer button and the phone will take 10-12 seconds to open up, the gallery app takes maybe 30 seconds to pull all the pictures up, or some of the pictures don't even load at all. Just horrible lag all around. But as soon as I wipe and reboot everything is smooth as silk again. I wonder if it is the amount of apps or maybe a certain app I am running that is messing things up.
Anyone have any insight on this?
Sounds like your overloading the phone, just delete the apps that you don't REALLY need and you will be good.

Shouldn't the memory manager handle that? it isn't like I have 50 apps running at the same time.
As you can see from the title, the phone app "Dialer" launches very slow every time i leave the app for more than 5 minutes. Actually its not just the dialer app but also i noticed that with some apps like messaging, it takes around 3 seconds to launch. It started to annoy me specially because, first i make calls a lot and second because i know that i am using 1.5GHz dual core processor "one of the reasons that made me buy this phone". i have tried the galaxy phones many times specially the s2 and the note and i never see that specially that their processor is technically slower. Does anybody notice that? and is there a way to solve this problem?i don't care about other apps, i just want the dialer to launches quickly like it does with the Galaxy phones and any 1.5GHz dual core processor.
Now i am using ICS rooted with locked bootloader. Still no difference than Gingerbread. still launches the app very slow. Any suggestions, Ideas?? please!
I agree. In GB there was no such issue, but the lag is very noticeable in ICS.
Very Annonying indeed.

i did factory reset like a thousand times. the problem is not new with ICS , GB too was little slow with the "phone" application except that now ICS, its more noticeable. and BTW i dont use any ram optimizers or apps killer at all, actually never had! and for rooting the only apps i use are SetCPU, Root Explorer and titanium backup!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1745668
i checked the stock ICS dialer that was posted in there but i didnt like it.
i then downloaded the EXdialer from the market with the black ICS theme and its FAST.
This lag in Phone drove me crazy so much that I rooted (locked bl) my phone in attempt to improve the performance.
After freezing dozens of apps for more RAM, strangely now my Phone app launches a lot faster... not sure if it is a memory issue or that in the process of reflashing I got a smoother ROM.... somehow.
I also installed the ICS Dialer as mentioned above which is very fast. I am still using the SE Phone app, but keep the ICS Dialer just in case the lag come back.
I have just bought an S3 and I am actually quite disappointed in it's performance.
I have an S2 (Running stock ICS) and my S3 (Running stock JB) is quite noticeably slower, with terrible lag.
I am just wondering if this is normal, surely this should out perform an S2?
The 2 main area where it is considerably slower is opening up my contacts and MMS app.
From clicking the contacts icon it takes about 2 seconds to actually load the contacts, and the MMS app takes about the same time to load.
Also when opening my app drawer it is buggy and laggy when scrolling through.
I notice that I also have little to no free RAM, yes I know how android works and how it utilises RAM but it doesn't seem right to me.
Anyone else having this problem?
I'm also running JB which should be smoother than ICS!
The firmware version I'm using is XXDLJ4
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
you are either doing something wrong or holding a faulty handset, apart from the delay in opening contacts app after heavy usage, s3 will absolutely smoke s2.

It totally smokes my S2 in benchmark tests but in real usage it doesn't.
Is there any way of checking if it's faulty?
Like maybe an app that checks all 4 cores are running properly and GPU is functioning properly?

turn off Facebook sync and ripple effect

The screen scrolling is fine, it's nice and smooth. It's the opening up of contacts, phone and MMS that is really slow.
I've got the latest UK JB update so it should be a lot snappier, in my opinion.
And it's definitely a S3, no doubt there. Yup it was slow right from the get go.
It's the crazy high RAM use that is annoying the hell out of me
Oh, Then go to developer options and select background process limit to 4.That should help, but if you are freaking out about the RAM, then don't cause that's how android uses the ram.
I am currently Using Liquid smooth ROM (AOSP) . I have no contacts or phone lag. Use it if you like AOSP
Use an ASOP or miui Rom! JB onS3 is good but Sammy needs to improve.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
yes your s3 should blow your s2 away and NO you shouldn't have to tweak or remove apps, live wallpaper etc.
First try a factory reset...best and simplest advice for performance issues.
Then, and only then should you need to try to find out what apps or settings are causing problems (to be honest no settings should retard performance that badly).
Then...and its a longer shot is a faulty rom installation which a reset won't fix. In that case you'll need to reflash DLJ4 from a reliable source, here on XDA, samfirmware, checkfus etc.
If still problems then your issues are hardware related and you need to visit your provider who'll have access to a maintenance centre, or even samsung themselves...assuming you're still running stock. If not you need to use a guide to restore your phone status to unmodified and a flash a stock rom first.
Good luck

Mine is REALLY fast. More responsive than ics for sure.
Full wipe, stock and..
That's it
Also loading a list with 50 or 100 contacts and some having photos can not be immediate unless its already in the cache..
Definetly do a factory reset, usually fixes most of your problems.
If its being all sluggish i would suggest running "Paranoid Android [ROM]" on it, which is amazing. Or if your looking for something lightweight go, "SuperNexus".
Either way, also go to " settings > dev options " and then change all the Animation Scale (From 1x) to 0.5x it will make the animations faster.
Your phone is not faulty.
The stock contacts and sms app made by samsung are too heavy and indeed open very slow. You should try exDialer or jelly bean sms app which can be found on Play store.

I only notice slowness with power saving mode enabled. Make sure its not and it should. I would use roms as close to stock as possible, IMO. Flashing and using aosp amd miui like others have stated will probably cause more niggly bits of annoyance then rectify current issues youd only replace them with new ones. Unless of course you have a rom addiction and flash every second day like me

No problems here, but have changed a lot.
Disabled S Voice, froze all Samsung applications. Same with services like remote controls, tracking etc. Deleted bin/kiesexe since I never use KIES and the extra ram is handy to have (ROM cooks, here is an idea, ask users if they want KIES on install, if not delete it)!.
Install a good kernel and try running a SQL optimization script to speed up databases. Lastly don't touch supercharger etc to get more free ram (that is wasted ram). It'll slow down Contracts and the Dialer since it removes them from ram. They are loaded at startup for a reason.
Also lastly, turn off unneeded Startups
You should be able to find a list of unneeded services and tasks, somewhere on the forum
You'll understand why, when you look at the list of unneeded bloatware, services etc running, why it is slow. shame on Samsung.
Swyped on GT-I9300 - XXDLJ4 - Siyah kernel 1.7b1 - JKay framework -
try wiping the cache partition in recovery mode. worked for me
Hello XDA Community, I have come to turn to you looking for a little bit of light to bed shed on my first forray into real mobile technology and learning to root.
I recently was ably to root my Note 3 (n900a - mj5) with Kingo, and it was incredibly easy! I have this community to thank for helping me find that information. After doing a basic root ( no flashing or anything) I went ahead and started to remove all of the bloatware on my device. I followed some basic guides and the spreadsheet for Bloatware that is floating around, and I can also reverse any particular uninstall if I need to. Everything seems to function fine, but what I have noticed since rooting my phone (which I basically did right away, so I have no real comparison as to how it should function normally) was that I often get a notification "Unfortunately, X program has stopped working" with various programs. It initially started while I was doing the first uninstalls with Advanced Uninstall Expert. I would queue up a number of programs to uninstall, and after a couple would go it would inevitably give me the aforementioned notification. It doesn't cause many serious problems, but it is certainly disconcerting on a new device to see it so much.
So to my main question, does this seem like something I may have caused with maybe a small uninstall of a system program (even though it happened before I had uninstalled more than a couple of simple obvious apps) or is this maybe an instability with the phone / OS? Should I unroot and factory reset, then use it normally to see if this still persists? I just picked the phone up on Friday and so I am within my 14 day period, and I still have 0x0 so I could do that if this seems like a problem with the device. I am just very inexperienced in regards to this field and want to reference any other sources I can.
Thank you in advance for any insight you can offer regarding this problem, I look forward to seeing any responses you have for me.
Sounds like you are just freezing apps and not deleting them? How are you going about freezing them? Is it Knox security warnings by chance? Did install recovery and make a backup? I would unfreeze all apps if you have in fact just been freezing them so you are stock other than root and try it out for a day. If it's still happening you may need to Odin back to stock and see if that helps.

I recently found the way to clear apps from memory and I'm keeping an eye on it now. The only weird thing is I seem to be running about a constant. .9 gigs in my ram when only swift key is running even after clearing my ram so I'm trying to figure out what that's all about. Anyways I will most likely Odin to stock and take a slower approach to trying things out. Thank you once again for the information.

Nothing wrong with .9 gigs ram. On odex blue I usually sit around 1.4 to 1.6 gigs. Not sure what your looking to get out of it but your not going to see better running touch wiz. There are a few debloated roms you may want to try rather than trying to accomplish it yourself.

I have 2 Note 3's in our household rooted with Kingo and they don't have such problems. Sounds to me like you've frozen or uninstalled some programs that are causing the unstableness. I've been too enthusiastic before in the past freezing and deleting bloatware & other system apps and experienced similar issues as yours.
These days, I keep the freezing and deleting to a minimum.
