[Q] Factory reset - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
From mistake i did a factory reset. After that i lost all my contacts(that wasn't saved on sim), all messages. After sync withh google surprise no calendar events. All applications were installed after sync with google. can i do something to recover my messages and my numbers.
Thank's in advance!

Recuva might be able to recover your data if it was in place you can normally see when you hook your phone up to your PC (I.E not in system folders). But don't get your hopes up, it's a long shot. If you have a Nandroid backup, you can probably use something like AppExtractor to pull your sms/call logs & so on, but if you don't have a backup then Recuva is your only rough chance.

if you use google account your contacts and calendar should have come back, unless you choose not to add new contacts to google.

[Q] Sync/Nandroid Issue

Did a full nandbackup and have checked back with my original eris 2.1 which has my most current google contact list and my stored text messages.
When i check the last time i google sync'd my contacts to the exchange server (on original eris 2.1 setup) it says 9/29/10 (today) but when I flash my new kaosfroyo the contact list does not include any additions ive made since i purchased the phone.
All contacts were always saved in the google contact list in an effort to backup data on a server instead of just the phone.
Would the best bet be to wipe the ROM and flash again and try to let google re-sync? Or is this an issue I will need to take up with Verizon (for the longest time it would say "this service is temp unavailable" in the sync options)?
Also, is it possible to have my text messages imported to my new ROM? Nandbackup apparently would not do this-possibly another sync issue?
Btw if this question has been asked I apologize - tried to search through these forums quite a bit to no avail. Any help for a first poster would be much appreciated.
I would have thought if your contacts are "Google" contacts, re-syncing your Google account would bring them all back in.
As to importing SMS/MMS (i.e. text messages and those with pictures) into a freshly flashed ROM, yes you can import them. I do that all the time. I have Titanium Backup installed and before I flash a new ROM I backup SMS/MMS, browser bookmarks, and email account settings. Once you have TB installed, the item you will be looking for to backup for SMS/MMS is called something like "[SMS/MMS] Dialer Storage". In the old ROM, you open TB and backup this item. Flash the new ROM, install TB. Open TB, restore "Data Only" for Dialer Storage and then reboot your phone. Do not open messaging app before you reboot the phone. After the reboot, all your backed up SMS/MMS should be there. The same process works for me for browser bookmarks and email account settings. However, I am not sure but I think backing up the email account settings only works for those accounts which are configured through the stock mail app vice being configured via Menu --> Accounts & Sync.
A word about Titanium Backup: the paid version of the app is well worth the money.
Can you verify that your contacts were synced properly, perhaps going into Gmail and assuring that all your changes are there. If they aren't go back to 2.1, sync again then reflash KaosFroyo. If your changes are there then you could try re-flashing anyways (you may try to reboot and resync first). As far as text messages, I'm not aware of anyway to back them up directly, but they're are great apps that can backup all SMS to your gmail account. Hope this helps a little, good luck!
Just downloaded Titanium and backed up all sms (after a long struggle w/ the app not recognizing that I DID check the allow foreign apps setting)
Will reflash tonight and hope that Google kept everything in order
Thanks for the replies... ill let you know how it turns out tomorrow
Looks like my "sync contacts" with google never officially worked. When I went back to my original eris setup with my current contacts it reverted back to saying last sync 03/xx/10.
I let the phone attempt to sync for nearly 2 hours and still no data sent... I searched through the forums and came across a post saying to flash a new radio in order to establish the connection with google. Are there any better resolutions to this problem or is this the best option?
I am still working on getting titanium to backup my messages - everytime I create a backup with my original eris setup it gives me full backup (160 data apps including sms and mms) but when i flash my new rom it says all data and apps restored to OS yet I still don't have my old texts.

You could always use the contacts app on the phone to export a vcard of your contacts and import it via gmail. I had to do this with my brothers CDMA hero because it just absolutely would not sync with gmail, it would add contacts from gmail to the phone but not the other way around. After we exported as a vcard and imported into gmail manually it has brought down the contacts every time since.
Looked around and found a neat little trick that apparently resets google sync
I used the manage apps and cleared all data for my SMS/MMS dialer storage
Rebooted then reloaded my gmail account and the sync error vanished
f yes
Also downloaded SMS/MMS backup and restore - other than some duplicated messages I now have all my texts.
Yaaaay now I can enjoy my new ROM

[Q] Google & Phone contacts

I have had my U20i for about 2 months now, recently i updated my phone with the last firmware and i chose not to keep the data during the updates (i want the phone to be in factory original state). I never turned off the google auto sync for mail and contacts, the one i turned off is calendar sync, so i wasn't worried about my contacts dissapeared after update.
After updating my phone i turn the sync on and get my contacts back from google, but then i realized that not all of my contacts were there. I logged in to http://www.google.com/contacts from my computer and found that there are only 194 contacts (all of my contacts are about 300)
When we save a new number and add it to contacts, we will get 2 options (save it to phone contacts or google). If im not wrong, if we choose to save it to phone contacts, it will automaticly sync with google contacts and add a new entry on google side too right?but why it is not?even after the update i add several new number to my phone contacts and it's still doesn't update my google contacts account.
Hey, I fear for your contacts. There are indeed two places to store your contacts. One for the 'telephone book on the phone', and one for the 'google phone book'. If you choose the telephone book on the phone, the contacts will save only on the phone. If you choose the google phone book, the contacts will save on the phone and will sync with google.

Well it is my mistake then..
i thougth it will automaticly sync with google when i choose to save it on phone
the only good side of having your contacts save to phone only is: you get to do a backup without connecting to the internet (i.e., with the backup & restore, you can backup up your contacts to your sd).
if you do a backup to sd, contacts in google, don't get backed up, so you will have to connect to internet to do a sync to restore them.
the real benefit of sync to google is, just in case you lost your phone, you can get your contacts back from google.

I see, thats why I can't restore my phone contacts, I usually select my google account rather than the phone, though its not an issue anymore since i have unlimited mobile internet account. it was my problem back then, when I was playing with my phone, and I brick it accidentally. I have to connect to m internet, and my bill will be ...yeah.. high.

shouldnt gmail restore contacts or am i imagining that?

Without backup assistant from Verizon, why can I not restore my contacts? It's making switching roms really a hassle.
Are you positive that your contacts are in gmail? Do they show up when you go to gmail from a computer? They may be saved on the phone directly and wiping the phone wipes them too. But you are right. Assuming that your contacts are in gmail, they should auto-backup and restore. Just make sure you are signed into your gmail account and sync is set-up.
Yeah, sync is on. This is really my issue I run into anymore.I've even tried to find an app just to make contact backups. Ugh...
When you make your contacts you have to select them as Google contacts, otherwise they're just stored locally on the phone. Go to gmail on your computer and look at your contacts. If they're there, they should be on your phone. If not, you may have lost them.
I saw a post earlier that described the best way to get this to work. Basically the phone saves the numbers locally by default, and does not back them up to google (which is stupid). The way I read to fix it is as follows:
1. Backup all you contacts to your sd card.
2. Delete all your contacts.
3. Restore all backups from sd card and set them as google contacts.
4. In the future always check that you are saving them as google contacts instead of phone only.
This wasn't my idea, but it worked for me.
You can always back up your phone contacts and then email the file to yourself. Then, on a desktop computer, go to gmail.com and under contacts you can import your contacts file. Then the next time your phone syncs with google they will show up.

Need a Backup-Restore program 4 Contacts...

Hi Friends,
I am having a serious problem with contacts syncing, backup-restore...
I like trying new build android OSs & therefore I need a backup-restore application for contacts, but I can not get a perfect solution up to now...
Even gmail syncing is a disaster for me.. I don't know which way is main, phone or gmail contacts? Sometimes it is bullshitting, syncing but not all groups, no sync for photos of contacts...
My experiences:
1- MyBackupPro-v3.8: Sometimes not restoring groups, & very very slow restore
2- SpriteBackup-v2.5.0.188: Sometimes not restoring groups, & very very slow restore
3- ContactsBackupPro-v2.5.4: Restoring groups but adding " character on contacts which are not having anything on Notes section & put themon a new group "
4- Some others are having problem as restoring contact numbers; ie, I am saving my contacts as a +XX YYY ZZZ ZZZZ format, but they are restoring contacts with +XXYYYZZZZZZZ format... & some of them are not restoring saved photos for contacts.
5- PC based backup-restore: Wondershare MobileGo-v1.1.0.111 is backing up, but with destroying the number format as I've just told...
Anyway, is there any contacts backup-restore program that allows you to (correctly) do restore groups + number format + without adding anything?
Finally, I met with android with MIUI, & I miss the Backup program of MIUI's own backup application, it was very perfect.
No advice at all!!
You might want to try manually doing my making a .csv file and importing and exporting to the phone.
In my opinion, people that say that GMail conmtact sync is not working they haven't set it up right...

Thank you but I tried that also, photos are not backed up that way.
Have you tried the actual contacts app import/export? I'm not sure what info is saved by this method but I was assume it'd be a full backup.
Also, this is somewhat related so I just want to mention...
on Wednesday the Google server went wacky and I lost about 3/4 of my contacts from the cloud. I went crazy trying to find a fix but nothing... then I got onto Gmail from the desktop. There is a contacts restore feature, to any time from the past 30 days. I just went to restore to Tuesday, and everything was back. Saved me!
Like amnigo said try the built in import/export function. You can find it from the contacts app menu.
Also the problem you stated about '+XX YYY ZZZ ZZZZ format, but they are restoring contacts with +XXYYYZZZZZZZ format' you should be able to use this Contacts Clean-up (I can't liunk it since I'm a new user so search for it in the android market) I had the same type of problem too and managed to fix it with this.
Try this
Am using this and works well

Hey, can anyone tell me any app that makes contacts backup with all the high quality images in the ics contacts, i tried a lotta apps and import/export and the gmail sync but the picture quality is reduced in those

I know this & tried as well, but as you said, it changes the format & contacts clean-up sometimes does not work (may be some interfere with the rom build, I don't know!)

Yes, I have tested this also but this does not restore groups...

[Q] how to launch manually an app?

Hi,
I stupidely cleaned some Android's apps cache and I forced them to close; but I lost my contacts and it seems that I can't get mails (maybe some settings have been erased). Anybody has an idea to restart these app, even without widget?
Thanks by avance for your answer.
Regards
Just launch that app in app drawer or reboot
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
have you tried a reboot? usually starts services again.
if not a reboot do you have titanium backups of the apps data? try restore them.
hope it helps!
thanks for your answers, but the reboot did not helped; the following apps are still dead (impossible to click on "force to stop" button):
com.samsung.app.playerready
com.samsung.InputEventApp
com.sec.android.app.lcdtest
Erreur
EncryptApp
etc.
and for example:
com.sec.android.daemonapp
crashNotifier
DataCreate
etc.
has the button "force to stop" ok, but with 0 in App and data, meanning that it's certainly not running.
I lost all my contacts and phone numbers, I still have the sms but without any link with any contact, all disappeared...
Apparently other apps kept their settings.
How stupid am I!
Any new idea will be the wellcome to recover the contacts and phones numbers (+900), I tried to re synchronize with android-sync, and nothing happened.
are your contacts not backed up to google servers? i always keep mine there. either way download supernbackup, see if you can save your contacts and sms. then i would restore a previous backup!
EDIT via nandroid btw
Factory reset will restore apps but not data.
Question = Q&A .
jje
thanks all for your answers; no backup, all data are in Outlook, that's not the biggest problem: when all the other apps still get their own settings and run well (IP camera, ChecmarkCaledrier, etc.), the contacts are not synchronized and I don't know where it's located by the app (named DW Dialer, payed version) to check if the data are effectively lost or if it's just the link to the data..
to Emofishcake: what do you mean by "edit via nandroid by the way"?

oh i meant EDIT: (as in i edited my post) and then restore backup from nandroid (not titanium backup) lol
Well, that's really odd: I still have my sms, all my calls history, all the categories/groups I created under DW Dialer for my contacts, but not the favoris, and not any contact even if I can see the name of the contacts I imported or created before even if I click on the contact button.... Impossible to make any synchronization between my Outlook PC and my S2..
Hi, all,
I recovered all my contacts!!! After many trials of many different kinds, I found that the settings of the Android Sync have been modified: I put again the righ tsetting (from where to where, etc.), and everything went back right! Many thanks for your help anyway, and the moral philosophy is that you must never clean the cache of apps you don't know what they are designed for!
Regards
Well-well-well... I recovered all my contacts because I changed the setting from Outlook to Outlook by default in the Android Sync settings; it means that actually I put all my Outlook contacts into my S2, but I still have lost the Android ones: and it's still impossible to stop Android Sync with the button "force to stop" in Application/manage your services, meanning that the app is still down.
I kept the categories I created, but they are now affected to the google account, not to the android sync account; impossible to reactivate the android sync account. This drives me crazy!
