HOME button alternative - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there an alternative to using the home button? My guess is prolonged use might render it ineffective.
I'm currently using the back key to come home.

The purpose of this button is to be pressed. A lot.
Don't sweat about the little things.....
BTW - your AMOLED screen is getting burnt-in because it's displaying the same images constantly (like battery, signal and data/wifi indicators).

Home key failing

Anyone else having this issue: my home key needs to be pressed a number of times or firmly before it reacts. I'm affraid the button is starting to go.

Mine started doing it a while back and it turned out to be my screen protector. I was using Stealth Guard protectors at the time.

Hmm, Im not using a screen protector.
Are those buttons along the bottom actually buttons, or are they just touch sensititve?
See if it tends to work better if you press it as soon as the button back lights go off.... I had to return my first vibrant because of this hardware issue.

Yes, it works better when the backlight goes off! Damn it, I don't want to have to return this phone. Its easy to get into download mode...
Could it have anything to do with the rom I'm running? (Obsidian v4) its supposed to support a kernel with backlight notification...

Home Button or Back Button?

What does everyone use when exiting apps, home button or back button?
It's my understanding that pressing the home button leaves the app running in the background so more battery would be used?

Back button to close app indeed.

I use back buton as home buton is waaaaaaaay too laggy.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Depends! If I want to check another app quickly then return I use home (multitasking). If I don't want to use again I always press the back button to kill the process.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Since they have different functionality, your question doesn't really make sense. You use both, depending on what you want to do.
Also, the back button doesn't kill the process, afaik there are cases when the application could remain still running.

Yep, messaging and the stock browser...there are others too...
I just stopped trying to close apps one way or the other. I just "do what i want" (e.g. surf to a website, check an app) and then leave the phone without exiting any apps. After some time I'll check the same site/service anyway, and if I want to do something else it's still just a few presses away.

Multitask menu slow

So pretty often when I hold the home button there's like 0,5-2 seconds delay between the vibration and the actual multitask menu to come up. Not like my Galaxy S2 where it always came up immediately. Anyone having this too?

Yup
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
wow it was already a bummer than you had to hold the home button for app switcher but now there is another noticeable delay on top of that?!
I was 50/50 on whether to bite the bullet and preorder my very first android phone. but now I am for sure going to wait till I can test the phone in person at the at&t store.
The lag is caused by the S Voice. "S Voice -> Settings -> Launch S Voice" option needs to be be unchecked. Then the lag should be gone.

How is that connected to multitasking? Anyway... I haven't got this delay but the multitasking menu doesn't feel as smooth as it should... Only time I've experienced the new multitasking as smooth, is with cm9 on sgs2. Sgs2 stock ics is slow as ****

Well s voice is activated by double pressing home button. So the phone is waiting to see if you're going to press the second time to activate s voice, that might cause the lag. By turning it off, it should greatly reduce the lag.
I do not have this issue, but I found that sometimes, when the keyboard is open and you press and hold the home key to open task switcher, the keyboard closes, the task switcher appears for a split second and closes.
This doesn't happen all the time, but once it happens it'll keep happening every time you attempt to open the task switcher with the keyboard open, until you restart the phone.

I belive you are talking about the delay when quitting an app with the homebutton, there is no point in having the system wait for a second press if you still is holding the button. I have turned s Voice of because of the "return to home" lag, that does not help that my multitasking menu sometimes is not showing up as fast as the vibration...
You mean system recognize you want the multitasking menu up after you have hold down the button, gives you a vibration to confirm your command is confimred.. then waits a bit longer just to see if it was a mistake and you instead want s Voice to launch? Although it's even disabled?

Well it doesn't happen always.. And it certainly doesn't have to do anything with s-voice.
Yeah I noticed the same thing too after moving over from the S2

I have galaxy s2 & em enjoying it...
But from some days the "lockscreen" button started facing some problem.
It doesn't work until it is press harder & harder.
Please tell me IS THERE ANY APP THATS REDUCES THE USE OF LOCKSCREEN BUTTON?
NOTE: I didn't use it much because I have lockscreen software to lock screen and I use my home button to unlock/wakeup my phone.

Judging from the above problem, I can say that there seems to be a hardware issue. There is no app that reduces the effort involved in pushing the lock screen button. It is a long shot but then there may be a possibility that the software you use to lock it without pushing the lock button is the culprit. I may be wrong.
cheers.

You can easily go in to the settings of android and tell the phone not to have a lock screen
It's a hardware problem. Try disassemble your SGS II and see if there's something that causes this problem in your "lock" button, or just live with it...

So when the sreen goes dark, after not touching it for a short time I press the home button to wake it back up. as soon as I do that the screen flashes the page/app I was on and then returns to home. It is because you are pressing the home button, and the phone has not made it the lock screen yet. Thus when you 'wake' the phone it simply thinks you are pressing the home button, and returning you to the home screen.
Use the power button to turn the screen back on, it will only turn the screen on and not return you to the home page

On my old s1 I could press the home button no prob when the screen went dark. I could use the power button but would be uncomfortable for me. I have smart stay on and that has kinda fixed the probelm but only in day light or a light room. In a lowly lit area it sux
