Connect as USB? | Why PMP or Cam? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is this an ICS thing? Didnt 2.3 have an option to connect as USB only when needed?
S3 just plugs in and gets detected..

no its a S3 thing..they took out mass storage mount feature. but there is a app in themes and app section that lets you connect your phone to the pc

Most smartphones primarily rely on mass-storage mode (the computer gets direct access to the filesystem on the internal/external storage medium)
However you may only mount (=use) a filesystem once so the internal usage has to be stopped; the phone cannot use either of the SDcards while in mass-storage mode.
Galaxy S3, due to technical reasons, does not allow mass storage mode, only the newer MTP. MTP is not a direct access but the computer tells your phone "please get me that file" or "please change that file to X"; the mount is still within the phone so there is no need to stop access.
Do not use the Easy UMS app since it will cause data corruption and other issues in the current version 1.1
Use the direct shell scripts instead.

That is what I read.
The reason I ask is it doesnt seem to charge when connected to laptop. S2 did.

If the phone supports mass-storage mode is unrelated to ICS but the ROM and partitioning.

What do you mean by "seem". Does the icon display a charging icon or not?
Try turning it off with cable unplugged, plug in the USB and check if it displays a battery icon (may take a few seconds).
Maybe your Laptop has an underpowered USB-power which sometimes happens with elder devices. Try using another cable, a Y-cable (if available) or plugging it into another computer.
Charging has nothing to do with file transfer.

It does show the charging indicator. But the charge kinda stalls. I will keep testing and report back..

Define 'kinda stalls'. Doesn't it charge? If you're using your phone when it's connected it could drain roughly the same amount of battery than the laptop is capable of charging it.

[Q] Where is USB mounting?

Weird question, but with my Steak, I put in USB to computer and mount via the notification option. Now I have MHL connected (or something like that), but no option to mount. Goto settings and there is a USB mount option in there as well, but when I choose that option, it says to remove the cable. And the reason I don't want to is b/c it's my first full recharge after a full charge/discharge to condition the battery. Suggestions?

Just doing a quick unplug/replug shouldn't mess your battery too much dude, I'd just go for it
Remove the cable. Turn on USB DEBUGGING in the Settings=>Applications=>Development menu. After enabling USB Debugging, whenever you plug your phone into the PC it will display an option in your status bar to enable it without having to go through Settings again.
Don't forget to Thank Me if this is your solution please.
I am getting an MTP connection and my windows machine is just recognizing the phone as a Camera. I have no option to mount the phone as a USB drive. Am I missing something?

[Q] Drag'n drop w/o USB Mass setting

Is there a way to get the phone to be recognized by the PC for drag'n drop functionality without using the on/off USB mass storage feature in the settings? I had this going for me when I intially bought the GNote where all I did was plug in the phone via USB and the PC saw it as a media device of some sort (I want to say it showed up as a camera or mp3 player). The phone also displayed "MFT" or something (not 100% sure) at the top left corner in the notification bar. After rooting and freezing some things, I have since lost this ability and now have to go into the settings and toggle the USB mass storage feature.
I rarely use USB drag and drop. I mostly use Airdroid. http://bit.ly/umae1H
I'm not able to do wifi or bluetooth with this particular laptop.
Problem solved
Un-freezing "MTP application 1.0" solved the problem

Ha! The laptop is actually decent, its just my company's and it is locked down pretty tight... Hence the reason why I don't need it showing up as a mass storage device when I plug it in

I'm still able to do it after rooting. I used the mass storage once and by default it disables the USB debug option. Go into Settings-Location and Security and uncheck Disable USB debugging mode. That should bring it back.

[Q] USB Charge Only with ICS leak?

Is there an option in ICS settings to have Razr default to "Charge Only" when USB is plugged into PC? That's what the stock GB used to do. Now with ICS the Razr mounts two drive letters for sdcards and another as a cdrom device with motocast software that autoruns annoying web site with audio telling me to set up my motocast account. I spose I could do that, if it will shut the damn thing up, but I liked the charge only option so I could plug in and run adb, then if I needed to mount as usb storage I could select that.
ICS usb connection options are usb storage, media device and camera device. You can select more than one, but you can't select none. Is there a way to get back to charge only option with ICS?
Thanks!
It was removed because it didn't improve charge speed, so there was no point.

Thanks for the response, TSON.
I get that maybe they didn't want to make charge only the default setting, but they could have left it as an option at least. One thing I notice is that with /sdcard and /sdcard-ext mounted as USB drives on my PC that I can't do anything with those directories with adb. For example when phone is plugged into PC via USB and I use adb shell and try to "cd /sdcard" I get permission denied. I assume that this is the same reason that ES File Explorer reports that sdcard is not mounted when it is plugged into PC. Prior to updating to ICS I could set USB mode to charge only and still was able to access files on sdcard with adb or file explorer.
There has to be some way around this, right?

That's not the only reason to have charge only. You lose access to your sd card in the phone when it is in mass storage mode. When I am plugged in to my computer I can't access my music files or sd applications.

Basically you can't do anything with phone when it's plugged in to your computer to charge. At least not anything that requires access to sdcard.
I'll have to try one of the other options, either camera device or media device. Not sure what they do. That might be the answer.

OK. I selected Camera (PTP) instead of the default Mass Storage option and I get access to sdcard. I also get a pop up from my PC asking me what application I want to open to handle the camera connected to it, but I can dismiss that easily enough. So the quick answer is pick anything other than mass storage and then you don't have the sdcard restrictions that mounting the sdcard as mass storage imposes. I still would prefer to have a none of the above option for USB connect mode, but I can live with this.
Problem is it charges slower than it uses power in these modes. Needs to be a fix to this.

USB connection doesn't work

Settings > Wireless and Networks > USB utilities > "Connect storage to PC" button > plug in USB cable
This used to work perfectly up until today, now it just doesn't work anymore and the "Connect USB cable to use mass storage" popup keeps showing even after I plug it in. I've tried on multiple computers and I tried restarting my phone, but nothing works.

Thats one wierd proccess for getting USB storage man. most would just plug it in and pull the notification bar down to click the mass storage mode icon thing.
but if your not getting a connection, USB port could be toast.
Simple search would've showed that.

Oh wow you're right, I just plugged in the charger and it doesn't charge. So phone is useless, throw it away?
It's strange that it worked fine up until today and then suddenly decided to break, even though the phone has just been sitting on my desk in my room. And it's only a few months old.

If you really have a fried USB port, send the phone back for a warranty replacement. If you don't have stock firmware on it, there are guides to return to stock - haven't specifically checked, but I believe it's possible to do this entirely without plugging in if you are already rooted.

I bought the phone on ebay though, would it still have warranty?
Is there a part I can buy to replace it myself? It's definitely a problem with just the USB port, because if I fiddle with the charger it starts charging if I hold it at a funny angle.
Some people have had success cleaning the usb port with alcohol. That might help but not if a wire or solder joint is broken. If you do try alcohol, don't use regular rubbing alcohol (70%), too much water (30%), get the better (90%) or even better (99%).
If you don't feel like fixing it yourself, you can settle for finding a battery charging dock and get an extra battery. Also, if you need to place files on your phone, use dropbox, Kies wirelessly, or take out your SD card and use an adapter.
I bought a new USB connector and it's working now.

In Android 4.0x systems (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above, Google introduced a new file transfer protocol called Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), which may be set by default. The problem with MTP is that, while Windows explorer can see it, there is no drive letter assigned, so programs like Pimlical can not see the phone's sdcard. The Android operating system still has the capability of USB Mass Storage protocol, which does assign drive letters, as has been the norm in all previous operating systems. It may be possible to set the phone to USB Mass Storage through phone settings. If it is not possible to set the phone to USB Mass Storage through phone settings, then it is possible to force USB Mass Storage.
This behavior is governed by the system property /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config. This is a text file containing a single string. The settings are "mass_storage,adb" or "mtp, adb". Since this is a system file, it is necessary for the phone to be rooted, and then this file can be edited using a root file explorer. Change the text in the file to mass_storage,adb (without spaces), save the file, and reboot the phone.

[Q] my pc dosen't see TS

if i connect my TS to PC, my PC don't like TS storage, so i can't copy to TS. What's the problem?
Might be your cradle. Some owners have reported that they can charge through their cradle but that the two inner clips for data don't work. Maybe try lifting the cradle's pins a bit by gently prying them up ?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
I had the exact same problem when I first got the TS. I had to use a wifi file transfer app (i.e. wifi file transfer pro or airdroid) to put data on the TS. I still had the problem after installing newer firmware and EnSec security. Once I installed the bluetooth tether ROM, it was fixed and I can transfer files through USB.
I'm having this same issue. I can't connect via usb for any PC I've tried. With Win 8 or Win 7. I tried both of my chargers and several cables with no luck.
Does anyone have any other solution?.
Tones2, defective TrueSmart. Or multiple defective cradles.

Let me be more specific. My PC SEES that it's a true smart. I can eject it. It also creates two new "removable drives" when I plug it in. However when I click on those removable drives, nothing happens except a message that says" Please insert a removable disk into this drive".
I'm using Windows 8. I've tried 3 different chargers, 3 different cables and 3 different PCs (one with Win 7). I do NOT have an SD card installed, it that makes any difference.
Tony
Same problem like Tones2!
If i can not fix this connecting problem, then how can i use Play Store anyway?
Thx
When you connect your TrueSmart to the USB you should then be able to pull down from the Notification Bar and see your USB connection options. Select mpt or ptp or USB storage from there.
If you haven't got an SD card installed yet you can still see your phone's emulated SD card storage.

Thanks! I had to connect this as a MEDIA DEVICE for this to work. It does not work as USB sorage device, which it defaults to. But it did work finally with that change. THANKS!!!

I've got the same problem on Windows 8 not recognising my device. The suggestion is to pull down the notification Bar (I assume that's on the Watch, from the top of the screen). In my case I get the phone provider on the screen, and at the top of the screen, options to go to the time menu or top right more settings. If I go top right and select the settings, I can turn stuff on and off like WIFI, GPS, etc but I don't see anything to change the USB connection options. Am I looking in the wrong place?
If it helps, I'm using a 1/8 EU version with out any modifications (other than a few things downloaded via WIFI)
Hi guys,
I had the problem until I noticed from the notifications bar you have to click on the USB notification and then this brings up a screen with a button that you click to activate USB Drive, this then instantly mounts your drives... I'm using Windows 8 and I have just loaded loads of music onto mine...
