[Q] Processes using my battery - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Normally I'm not the type to obsess over background power usage, but today I got back from my lunch break and left my phone plugged into a usb port on my computer. The power level had dropped. I don't know if its just a crappy usb port on the computer, but it used to keep my captivate charged no problem. I opened the power usage menu in the GS3 and it says that "Android System" uses 44% of the battery and "Media Server" uses 34%. The screen used more power than anything on my Captivate, but the GS3's screen is only using 4% of the battery.
So my questions are:
Are there any apps or processes I can uninstall or stop that may bring down the Android System usage?
What the heck is "Media Server" ?
I've never tried to troubleshoot battery usage, so any tips are appreciated!

I always get rid of all excess processes (coming from a G2X I had to if I wanted my battery to last me through the day).
I use titanium backup (donated version is better because it can freeze apps) but there is a working list of what you can get rid of.
I would post it but since I am new to the forums I cannot post links. If you want I can PM it to you.

Sure, go ahead and PM it it to me, thanks! I have a feeling it may be the bloatware removal thread that I started, lol

Can someone post it please

I'm having the same issue with media server.
I've had 3 Android phones before and this didn't happen on them.
I was at 100% 3 and a half hours ago.
I played games for about 5 mins, sent about 5 texts and listened to tune in radio for about 20 mins.
I'm currently at 65%
TuneIn used 14% of my battery and media server used 30%, screen etc are the same as they normally are. Should media server be this high given that TuneIn is already consuming a lot.
Media server also has 2h and 6 mins on it. The only thing I can think is that when I stopped TuneIn radio, the media server kept running :s
Any tips??
---------- Post added at 10:04 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:17 PM ----------
I haven't even touched the media player, radio, music video or anything since I last posted and it's up to 2h 11m now

I'm having the same problem with the "mediaserver" service running and taking up battery.
I've traced it down to "TuneIn Radio" is causing the "mediaserver" to run. It never did this until recent updates. MediaServer is a battery hog and I don't understand why it has to run with TuneIn Radio.
How do we kill this process?

Very High Data Consumption by "Android OS + others" on XT910

Hi, I have a non-rooted RAZR XT910 (OTA Updated just a few days back to 65.1.40.XT910.AsiaRetail.en.03).
I absolutely love this phone and am eagerly waiting for some functional ICS goodness but I have been facing some issues with high consumption of data.
I have Onavo installed to monitor data usage (Installed it a little too late, relying on my service provider's text notifications).
The two most data hungry applications in the "App Watch" section are "Android OS + others" & the official Facebook application.
Three days in to my billing cycle, "Android OS + others" has already hit 51.7 MB and Facebook is up to 19.4 MB. I haven't opened the Facebook application even once in the last week, so whatever data it has pulled is background data. My OTA updates are allowed only over WiFi. And I have also disabled the "Back up my data" option, under Privacy > Settings but that doesn't seem to have helped much, if at all. Neither did the OTA update.
Before Onavo reset the data usage meter for the new billing cycle, "Android OS + others" had used about 150 MB of data in a week and Facebook about 40 MB.
Can anyone help me out here? I need to reduce this phantom data usage. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I have that too. I'm running rooted 167.19. first I suspected the gallery app with its motocast service so I freezed this app for one day, but it didn't helped. every now and then these few app processes (which are sadly only listed in one package so I don't exactly know which one causes the traffic) upload about 2mb somewhere. sometimes they also upload 2x 2mb, pause for some time and then there is an other upload of 2mb a few hours later. i'm monitoring traffic with droidstats and checking my consumed traffic online from my providers website.
I installed driodwall for blocking android-os service and these others from up- and downloading via 3g, just allowing wifi. this was also before the update with 651.73.30. full wipe already done - does not help ... still testing if blocking helps
This sucks but good to know I'm not the only one facing this problem with the RAZR.
I did start looking at other forums and seems like the problem is not only with the RAZR. There are other handsets which face a similar issue. Let us hope we get some insight into this problem.
i read about that defy users experience this high consumption too.
since I blocked android-OS (and all of these other processes in this package) from 3G network my traffic for today for corporate mail + 2x imap idle accounts + weather update is about 800KB. yesterday I had about 15MB for doing the same - nothing.
that helps for now but I still don't know which process exactly uploads so much stuff ... and why..
Just an update. Things still the same. VERY heavy data usage. Facebook is upto a 100MB even though I barely ever open the application now. Android OS + Others is around 200 Megs too. 300MB of my monthly 500MB data allowed is gone. Just like that. Any suggestions anyone?
That could be traffic originating from outside. Try connecting to another network and see if you see the same behavior.
With my Android, when I connect to my home WiFi network, "OS Services" take up about 2kb an hour while idle. But, when I connect to my work WiFi network, it takes up about 2mb every hour while idle. I am pretty sure my work network is doing a lot of snooping (in the name of security).
Facebook is understandable though don't ya think? It syncs all your contacts and birthdays and thongs of that nature.

Solutions?
No solutions or updates so far? Same problem here: Sony Xperia S, Android 2.3.7 (Build .75), 500MB dataplan and the OS takes 300 of that! I already took some precautions like turning of the backup, I've logged out of Facebook and removed my Hotmail app. And I installed JuiceDefender Plus which handles my connections, but no results whatsoever: Android OS still uses 5-10MB/day...
Any help would be very, very welcome.
Find the option for "Sync over wifi only" inside of settings, that should save a bunch. I've never had that problem, infact I have the opposite issue. I use maybe 100MB of my 500MB plan. Sometimes I even TRY to use up my data for the month and fail. I use the Facebook app maybe 10 times a month, most of my data goes towards sports scores, twitter, and reddit. As for the Android OS, the bloatware included on the phone are considered part of the "Android OS" so it's not really the OS using all the data. Open up the task manager and set all the bloatware to auto-end, might help a bit
Just posted in another thread about this. I some how used 25 megabytes on the way to and from work today with the phone in my pocket. 15 minutes each way.
Also accumulated about 280 "free" minutes this weekend between my wife and I. I thought weekends were free. Well I know they are supposed to.
Back to sprint and slow unlimited data as apposed to fast data that's going to break the bank. Just as I was starting to like the phone.
Call them tonight to tell them I was switching. Glad I'm withiny fourteen days.
Hey, didn't notice the replies till now. But do you have any task managers auto ending apps?
That was what caused high data consumption in my case. A self starting task when killed, may restart itself and it's data consumption process from 0.
Once I disabled that, data consumption fell to normal ranges. Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

Google Services/Google Play Service/Google Framework Services draining battery

Bear with me. If you are an expert on android maybe you can help me out here. First off, I have researched the crap out of this problem and still been unable to fix it, so YES, I did search before making this thread.
I am on a stock, rooted Verizon Galaxy S4. I have been watching my battery consumption carefully via the integrated battery settings menu, battery stats plus and wakelock detector apps. Mainly, there is a program or set of programs that typically is called "Google Services" that according to the integrated battery menu is consuming anywhere between 20-45% of my battery, sometimes more than the screen on time! My battery life is around 48hrs with 10hrs screen time but that is on the massive zerolemon 7500mah battery which I just bought, so I am not sure if that is above, below or just average (i.e. I have no real standard by which to judge).
Like I said I have read probably every thread about this problem with remedies such as; disable location, turn off google now, turn off google maps reporting, uninstall updates for google play/google play services/google framework settings, turn off google sync etc. I have tried them ALL, none seem to work. I have a feeling the issue is perhaps more in depth and above my head.
It gets more complicated. Although the stock android integrated battery menu reports it as using a massive amount of battery, the other two apps I mentioned above do not even report it, or at least not under a name that I regonize (perhaps that categorize it under a different process?). Under them screen time is by far the highest consumer.
So what to make of this? Is it a false report that the stock integrated android battery menu is reporting, and thus something to disregard? I doubt that because there are many other threads out there of people with the same problem and questions I have. But It's also not like my battery drains within hours. For instance, today I have been off the charge for 12.5hrs, with 3hrs and 40min of screen time and have 63% remaining on the 7500mah zerolemon extended battery.
If you can help, please do. If this is indeed a major drain I would really like to fix it.
EDIT: Maybe I should have posted this in the general S4 forum?
Make sure you're running the most recent version of the Play Store, version 4.1.10. There was an issue with the previous version that was causing battery drain. Just do a search for the most recent play store .apk file and install it with the package installer.

Yes! I saw this recommendation a million times. I was runing 4.1.6, which without much thought I assumed was newer than 4.1.10 (I interpreted the .10 to be a one instead of ten). But after your post it "clicked" for me, so I manually updated the play store and will see after the next charge whether it worked. Thanks again.

If it were me, I would next try flashing the no-wipe stock image from open1your1eyes0. I'm pretty sure that will fix your issue while leaving your apps & settings intact. It'll save you a lot of time and aggrevation as well.
I've been having a similar problem as well where every day google services seem to take up about 40% of my battery... I just updated to 4.1.10 play store and unchecked the Wifi & Mobile Network location in location setting yesterday evening. let see if this helps... today 3 hrs with no Google Services in my battery reading yet...

Well, I may have spoken too soon with my above post. As soon as I unplugged my phone earlier today I saw google services eating up the majority of my battery. But of course that only accounted for 1 or 2 minutes as I had just unplugged it. As the day progressed the amount used by google services did go up but not by as much as it previously had. So perhaps the update of google play store to 4.1.10 did work.
Currently, after being off the charger for 8hrs with about 1hr of screentime google services has used up 9% of the battery, which although not where I'd hoped is still much better than before.

well thats progress. As for myself, 1hr 27m screentime and 1 hr 40m voice call and off the charger for 10hrs 30mins. currently the battery is at 65% with no Google Services usage in sight. This is with Wifi, bt, and gps all enabled.
Go to data usage and tap on EACH program you do not need to have running background data and disable the background data. I only leave things unchecked like google play and services, email, just only a couple of things needed to get your messages. I freeze maps untill i need them and only have google location service on and gps and VZW off obviously. I only have email sync once an hour and only work email as i manually check for personal email.
Do that and your google services will behave. Android System never goes above 2% and Android OS is never above 5% unless im using wifi and such then it might creep up to about 9% after a few hours. Nothing else is ever above 9% unless its screen or device idle or cell standby.
Well, according to the stock battery report google services is still eating up my battery at 34% usage at 2h 19m. I unplugged 13h ago and used 2h 42m of screen time and am down to 28%.
BatteryStatsPlus reports google services as "Google Account Management", and although it says it has used the same time (2h 19m), it reports it as having used 6.42%. So I wonder if this is an issue of the stock battery report being too high, or whether google services really does consume 34%?
I'd really prefer to not start flashing things or wiping the phone. I hate messing with it and although I rooted it that is as far as I'd like to go. But that google play store 4.1.10 update didn't work.

Severe Wakelock Issues

So randomly, I started getting a wake:com.google.android.gms/.auth.be.proximity.authorization.userpresence.UserPresenceService
from Google Play Services. I did a little research, discovered it had to do with wearables (which i don't use). I then installed disable service, and disabled a couple of services that were recommended having to do with wearables.
That problem has not dissipated, and now I seem to have a massive GMail sync wakelock. My phone won't even enter deep sleep. Anyone having similar issues?
Im having a similar problem .. In my case i think it has to do with the gps as i installed nokia here
And then iPhone wouldnt get to deep sleep when using if not force closed

I went from getting 2 days uptime and 10 hours ost to 16 hours uptime and 5 hours ost. This wakelock is killing my phone. Tried rebooting, uninstalling play store updates, etc. Nothing
I'm having the same problem the past few days. UserPresence is killing my battery time and I can't figure out what's causing it, besides these wearable updates. Read about the Disable Services app, but I haven't rooted yet.
Do any of you guys have the Misfit Shine app? That's the only wearable app I updated in the past week. I spent hours going back over any other apps I updated manually to see if they mentioned a 'Wearable' update and backtracked those few apps. Still didn't make a difference after dozens of reboots, so I'm guessing its the Play services app itself causing it.
I don't have a gmail wakelock, but I have at least a dozen open network conx to G-Contact sync, and I've had that turned off since day one. I used to have this problem early on with G-Bookmark sync, which I also had turned off. It seemed to work itself out after a week or two.
If anyone has any other directions to look at, please let us know!
Thanks,
Mike

Sprint Voicemail App battery drain....

Has anyone here experienced this battery drain issue?
Recently, my battery has not been able to go into a deep sleep. Looking through Wakelock Detector and BetterBatteryStats, I find the following wakelock: CM HTTP Wakelock associated with the Sprint Voicemail app, core.coremobility.app.vnotes. This was preventing deep sleep from occurring.
I reverted and uninstalled all updates, and things seems to be ok for now (have only been monitoring for about 5 minutes though.
I know I should probably use Voice, but I like to keep my accounts compartmentalized for some OCD reason.
Having the same issue w/ my note 4. Posted in the 4 section as well. Started last night.
Same thing on LG G3; over the past 2 days (yesterday and today) the Voicemail Application has been at the top of the applications using my battery (Normally 20 to 40%). I think it might be because it's attempting to communicate with the Voicemail-to-Text server, and keeps timing out (I got an error when trying to change my preferences under Preferences > Mobile Advertising Preferences). Possibly. Just a thought.
Huge battery drain for me as well on my Galaxy S 5. This is ridiculous.
My father's Note 3 is doing it too; you can go into the apps and Force Stop it and it should stop doing it. It doesn't stop your voicemail, just the visual application, and when you enter it it starts again.
Same here. I uninstalled it yesterday.

As a temporary solution I went into the app settings for voicemail, deleted all the data (not sure if necessary and WILL delete your saved voicemails), uninstalled the updates, turned off notifications, and then restarted my phone. You will NOT be able to use the visual voicemail after doing this because as soon as you try to open the app it will prompt you to reinstall the mandatory updates. I don't really take many phone calls anyway so I don't care. I'll leave it like this until Sprint fixes the issue. I'd rather have my batter life back.
I did delete data (it will erase all previous voicemails) and revert to the original apk. Everything with the battery seems fine now, but I do get the notification that an update was needed. The app will still work when you bypass the update.
Are there any other good voicemail apps out there that are free? I miss the old voicemail app they had before this one. Wonder if I can pull it from my GNex.....
UPDATE: looking on the forum at sprint.com, people have reported that Sprint fixed the issue. Going to try to update and see what the result will be.
Yes, issue seems to be fixed for me. Couple of days with updated VM and no battery drain.

Light use endurance

Once in a while, when your significant other yells at you, you might use your phone a bit less. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge's battery performs under light use. A higher rating indicates that the device goes a long time when you're using the phone sparingly: no gaming or video/audio streaming, light web browsing, some calling and texts, etc.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
With light use, there is barely any battery drain. You will end the day at around 60%.
I do couple hours of waze an some gaming throughout the day, with the usual texting, facebook, internet, etc. My SOT has averaged anywhere from 5 hours to 6 hours and 42 minutes (best so far) with 5% to spare.
8.5hrs SOT in 60hrs total runtime with 5% left. G935V.
today im working from home so ive been doing some casual web browsing and app store browsing for a bit, on wifi the whole time, no tethering or anything. phone has been unplugged since about 9AM and it is now 3:30 and im at 84% battery.

I've had a light day today (with some browsing, chatting and redditing), and I have 80% left at 1:47 (AM) (2 hours 30 min SOT and around 15 hours up-time), so I don't think I even have to charge it tonight :silly: The battery is ridiculously good (Exynos).
Definitely enough for one day use
So I unplugged mine Wednesday morning and it's currently Friday 02:52 (AM), and I still have 27% left. I'm not even trying here. I've been playing some games (for a short period of time), browsing the web and Reddit, used FB Messenger a lot, and listened to music for countless hours. Current SOT is at 6 h 24 min.
I have the Exynos version - of course. Stock and unrooted. I have only disabled some stock apps.
Update: It's now 04:40 (AM), and I'm throwing in the towel. SOT is now 7 h 40 min, with an up-time of 1 day 18 hr. I have 16% battery left. You win, Samsung. You win.

Yeah, a lot of people are reporting worse battery life after disabling a lot of stuff, and my advice to you would be to not disable a lot of services. Very few apps are standalone apps without any dependencies etc. so you'll probably mess something up by "removing" a key piece of software (the app itself), while the services will keep "pinging" for the app even though it's not there. This causes battery drain even though the app isn't active, the rest of the "machinery" is, if you get what I'm trying to say.
I experienced this myself when I disabled S Health. I got noticeable worse battery life when I disabled it, and I understood why when I re-enabled it. S Health is active 24/7 as a service, and it's actually counting your steps in the background, which I didn't know until I started getting notifications congratulating me by beating my personal record and so on. I checked the settings, and sure enough, it's enabled by default to do that, so I have disabled auto-logging now, but this just shows how disabling one thing can cause small things like this to get messed up, resulting in CPU time and battery life lost.
This is especially true for Samsung apps, which are deeply integrated into the framework, so there are a bunch of things that work together, and those things won't stop looking for that missing app when you've disabled one.
It's not like "Oh, Tim (S Health) isn't responding, so we'll just stop calling him". Nope, they'll try again and again and again until "he" responds, and this is going to affect battery life. So my advice is to not disable all the Samsung apps. I have most of them enabled, but I use Nova Launcher, so I've hidden them from the app drawer, and my battery is, as you can see, awesome. The pre-installed Google apps are different though, since they're more modular, and thus much easier to remove without messing with anything else, like it's easier to remove the wheel (Google) of a car than a part of the suspension system (Samsung).
So I would re-enable most of the Samsung apps again and just see what happens. Then disable one by one and if you notice anything funky, then re-enable it and go to the next one
I haven't used it much today ( 1 hour 15mins screen time) 15 hours on battery, but Bluetooth on and in a 1 bar poor signal area. This seems really good to me compared to my LG g4

That does not matter. What matters is on what software he is. Someone on Marsh Mallow can get 8-10 SOT over 2 full days. Someone on Nougat can get 3-4 SOT with luck, in 1 day.
Oh yes! I totally forgot about that. Thanks!
I usually get between 7.5 and 9 hours SOT over 2 days, depending on what I'm doing. Fairly heavy user but not a gamer.
That's on MM. I am in absolutely no rush to switch to Nougat and shall monitor user reports carefully ?
