Last friday i received my first android phone Samsung Galaxy S3. After few days of using the phone i would like to try to root my phone, but before doing this i would like to ask you guys a few questions.
1. Is a back-up before root needed?
2. If i dont make a back-up before root, will i lose my list of contacts and my downloaded apps?
3. After i'm done with rooting, i readed i have to make a back up immediately, and after that i can install as many of roms i like or am i wrong with this?
4. What happens to my contact list and my downloaded apps when i install a new rom?

Did you save your contacts to your Google account? Your contacts should be tied to your Google account and your apps are as well. So when you sign in with your Google account on a new rom you will be able to see all of your contacts and apps. You don't need to make a backup before root, but you can. Be sure to read a lot before you root so you understand what is happening.
You can install as many roms as you want after you root and backup.

My phone shows that my contacts are synchronised to my Google account, but when i log with my Google account, i cant find anything. So where can i find the saved file? Ty about the info regarding root and roms. I readed a lot about roots and saw many Youtube video's, so i'm sure i can do this.

Just got my Aria today and I have a few questions I was hoping that people can answer. This is my first Android phone so be patient please.
1. My goal is to remove the ATT crapware and be able to sideload apps. However, I am not sure how stable the LiberatedRom. So is there a way to do that as I wait for a more stable rom?
2. What method of installing custom roms is better? I feel like us android noobs need a wiki for android b/c I have been following the Aria forum since it started and read everything, but I am still very confused.
3. Can you brick your phone rooting? Or is it not as dangerous as flashing a rom on an WinMo?

I've been using Liberated for nearly three weeks and it's been perfectly stable. I'm currently using B003 though. Can't speak for the newer betas.
Please take a look at the threads in the Aria Development forum as it would have the answers to most of these questions.
That being said the Liberated ROM is the stock ROM with root and busybox added, but the crapware has been removed. There are no changes to the ROM itself.
I haven't heard anyone bricking their Aria yet, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible. Always follow the instructions posted for flashing. Right now the Unrevoked tool is probably the best way to flash new ROMS though.
Ive been using the Boo3 for a few weeks now and its great because all the ATT crap was removed. It never messed up on me.
The hardest part for flashing this rom is getting into clockwork recovery to flash it. But once you do and you flash you will have root, then you can install ROM manager from the market and reboot into clockwork at any time easily to flash any ROM you want. Did i mention It gives you ROOT
You can always return to stock at any time by installing the original ROM from HTC site.

Rooting a phone simply means giving it Administrative rights. An unrooted (stock) phone is like having a guest account. With a rooted phone, you can do almost anything; flash custom roms, make a nandroid, permenantly remove unwanted apps.
Just got my Aria about a week ago and researched and rooted it with attn1's Liberated b003 in less than 24 hours, haha. I'm a total android noob myself

Thanks for that explanation. A few more questions:
1. I am still using my Tilt as my phone until the skin and screen protector for my Aria arrive so I don't have any relevant data on there. Would a Nandroid backup still be necessary?
2. What is the proper way to shut down applications? I couldn't do it for the life of me so I downloaded Advanced Task Killer from the market which was great.
3. Can you access Market without entering your Google account info? The reason I ask is that initial in put in my info and it copied all my Gmail contacts to the phone which I didn't want.
4. I am assuming if you sideload apps you can choose to install in on an SD, but is there anyway to install Market apps to sd?

A nandroid backup is used to restore your phone as it is. If you haven't got any data on it then making a nandroid backup sort of defeats the purpose I think. Also, you need to already have root and clockwork if you want to make a nandroid backup [I think] so it is not as if you even could create a backup prior to rooting.

It basically depends upon the application. Some have the ability to quit when you select the menu button, while others continue to run in the background.

I think you must sign into your google account to use market.
However, in "accounts and sync" under the phone's settings there is an option to disable contact syncing for your google account.
Or, you could just create a new google account with no contacts and log in using that.

From what I remember Android 2.2 will have native apps to SD support but it will be up to the specific developer to enable this feature on their app.
Check the forums, as there is(are) definitely a thread or two discussing installation of apps to the SD card.

Hi all. Noob here. First I want to thank all of you that are writing these amazing roms, apps and roots. Top notch.
I am running BAMF Remix 1.5 and love it! I have not had any issues with it at all. My question is this. I need to load Verizon Backup Assistant in order to recover all of my contacts that I backed up from my BB Storm. With this ROM the verizon backup assistant is no longer available. I would prefer to not have to go back to stock in order to recover these contacts, so is there any way to get the backup assistant without having to grenade BAMF, go to stock, recover contacts, then go back to BAMF?

I gave my DROID 1 to my friend becusae I have the THUNDER....
It is rooted and had a custom rom on it....he also had a blackberry and needed his contacts...all he did was went to a verizon store...and they transferred all his contacts.....this happend Saturday very recent

i had the saem thing for a little bit... all you have to doo is go back to the page that you down loaded the rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009876 and then scroll to the bottom of the first link and you will see all the zip files you need to install. along with the verizon backup and some other good ones. you will need to eather use Rom manager and install from your sd card or use appinstaller and still install from your sd card.... hope this helps

I saw all of those but assumed (shame on me) that since I was using the "REMIX" that it did not apply. So I guess it is safe to assume that it can be used on the "Remix" version.
I am surprised that a Verizon store transferred the contacts to a rooted phone?

Downloaded and installed backup_asst via recovery manager from the Das BAMF 1.5 thread here
When I look for it in apps it is not listed. It does say that it was successfully installed via recovery manager.
Any help on this one?
Never mind, figured it out... did not show up in apps, so I went into the "Setup" app and lo and behold there it was. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
You might want to consider backing up your contacts to your Google account since most roms do not support backup assistant because it is... Crap. Then when you flash new roms and sign in your contacts will already be there and you don't have to worry about the extra crapware.
True. I just needed the backup assistant long enough to get my contacts back on my phone. Now that they are there, I have already backed up to google and uninstalled backup assistant.

Another way to do it (This is the way I did it):
Download Google Sync for Blackberry to back up your contacts to your Google Account, and when you sync your TBolt, all of your Google contacts should be there. That's the way I got my contacts from my Curve to my Moto Droid...
To aid customer's who were converting from Features Phones (using Backup Assistant) to Android phones, VZW used to have a walk through when BA wasn't available on Android Phones.. It showed how to use VZW's backup assistant web site on your PC, export contacts to .CSV, and import the .CSV into your gmail account.
While that walk through has been changed with BA now being available for most/all android phones, the BA web site still allows you to export to CSV, and Gmail still allows you to import it.

do you have a stock rooted nandroid backup? becuase you could restore that backup that you know has backup assistant and extract out the apk and then put it on your new rom
Download the bamf rom,pull the two vzw backup apks,use root explorer to copy the to yoour system/app folder the click on them there it will install it

Out of pure curiosity...any reason you want to use Backup Assistant instead of just letting contacts sync with your Google account?
Contacts will always sync if you stay with Android or any phone that allows synching with your Google contacts but I guess it would be useful if you were going to get a non-android phone in the future...hmm. Even then there are other ways to do it but I realize you just want the app. As I said, I was just curious.

This may make me sound like dumb, what yeah, sometimes people make noobish mistake. Please help me!
This is what happened:
While I was researching about Rooting and Custom ROM and stuff, I saw a vid where a person goes into the console of the phone by pressing 3 buttons: Menu + Volume down + Power. I tried to do the same, just for the heck of it.
So, while I was starting the phone by pressing those 3 buttons, I was expecting I would be taken in console mode. BUT NO! After a long boot up, it greeted me with a Select language option.. and after that it asks me to set date and time formats etc..
It was then that hit me, that I may have hard reseted the phone! I googled and came across a vid, which explained the same thing, that, that procedure was for hard resetting and not going into the console mode!
Now is there an option to revert back this hard resetting, since I DONT want to erase the contents of my phone! :'(
My phone is still lying in that menu for about an hour now.
well if u saw closely that procedure wud have also explained that you should install the console looking thing before u start it?

So, pressing those 3 buttons just hard resets it? Instantly? Doesn't ask for ANY confirmation?
I don't care about apps, those can be re-downloaded, and contacts can be resync with google account (probably). But all those files which I created through native apps is gone?
Isn't there some recover apps?? Can't I still cancel it, since I haven't progressed into the wizard thing which showed up after that procedure?

AFAIK, hard resetting has reset the phone memory. So, the data inside card is sill intact. So, could it happen, that if I install the same app again which was there before, it takes the settings for the same from card?
I think it maybe the possibility, even a vague one.
Just for the record, my phone was running on stock ROM. And I hadn't even rooted the device prior to it.

So I decided to make a fresh start. Now that I have a chance to make a new start, I ensuring to take following steps so that no data loss occur from next time:
1. Syncing with google account already takes care of contacts, but extra precautions needs to be given when adding new contact. While adding new contact it should not be stored in SIM or Phone, rather the google account. Also apps have no reason to be lost since those can be reinstalled from market.
2. Using cloud apps, such as
-> Remember The Milk, which syncs tasks and notes to cloud
-> Google Plus, which syncs images with google account
-> SMS Backup+, which syncs Messages with GMail
If someone know how to backup scores of game apps, that would be highly useful!

Root it and install Titanium Backup, you can backup apps and app data and restore it all later on. It will save you a lot of trouble. We all make some mistakes at some point, sorry about your situation, but hey at least you can start with a clean slate now and on Android that's always great

Thanks buddy. I was successful in rooting my phone with gingerbreak! And then I took a titanium and a nandroid backup.
Now proceeding with removing the crapwares and maybe installing custom ROM.
Can I upgrade to gingerbread easily?

Export to sd card.. <it saved my life really..
I really think syncing contacts to Google account is the BEST way to keep it in safe place.
And after the Nandroid backup, I don't think, I can loose anything now!

Tomorrow night i will be reloading my phone as i would do every 6-8 months to mainly clear all the crud i accumulate! I am not rooted but would like to backup save games for my games (angry birds for example) how would i go about doing this?

Ok, if your phone is rooted, simply download titanium backup and use it to backup all of your applications and games. If you need more assistance in this, e.g. steps. Don't be shy to ask This is after all, what this forum is for!

you can only backup your personal data, and user settings stored in your phone untill you root your phone,
No applications and whatever installed in your Phone can be backed up and restore without root privilege.
EDIT: My knowledge was limited, thanks to MistahBungle for giving the idea about Mybackup Pro- I really want to purchase it for my one unrootable HTC phone, which I have to do factory reset frequently.
Not rooted = use Kies. Or MyBackup (can't vouch for how good/bad this is as I've never used it).
Easiest backup solution is rooted, use CWM to make Nandroid backup of entire system, & Ti Backup to backup apps.
Edit to add - According to the Google Play entry for My Backup Pro, it seems on a non-rooted phone you can backup apps but not app data/settings.
One huge advantage of a Nandroid backup is that you can try different firmware and restore your original quickly without flashing .
Nandroid backup of GB try ICS dont like restore GB Try custom rom dont like restore GB .
