I have a 5-6 year old media net unlimited plan $20 from AT&T which I got when I was using a Motorola MPX220. After that phone I used unlocked smartphones (tilt - UK version and tilt2 - Australian version).
Is there any way to keep this plan after buying this phone? Can I be grandfathered in or is that only possible with the $30 data plans?
no more media net
you WILL get switched to a $25 plan

That is what I did. I have the same plan, if I get a contract I lose my unlimited plan.
No its possible. ATT will recognize your imei number and bump you to a data plan. You have to buy a phone that is not in ATT system such as bell version of atrix. Other wise no chance.

okay so between James62370 and sl8125, one of you is spreading FUD.
it seems like for one person it works but according to another, it wouldnt. whats up with that?
i have a $10 unlimited data plan for messaging phones that i am currently using with a no commitment TILT2 and the phone prior to that was an iphone 2g.
so James62370, it works? if you buy the phone no commitment?

Ok ... here is how you can see if you can keep your old plan:
Check the features you have on your line ... If you have a feature called "Smartphone Exclusion" then no matter what ... AT&T wont be able to put the required data plans on you line automatically (the $15 or $25 / month)
If you have unlimited texting for the family as well ... then by providing a non-smartphone IMEI for your line you can get unlimited internet for $10/month.

I can confirm this as well. I spoke to an AT&T rep last night and he explained to me that all of my phones have "Data Exclusion", and that even if I bought the Atrix at the 2-year contract price from AT&T's website, it would not be able to apply a smartphone data plan to my account. I have the Media Net plan on one number with the Tilt 2, and no data on line 2, and I bought the Aria for line 2 and they did not apply any data to it.
He did warn me that if I made any changes to the data features on any phone I MIGHT lose the data exclusion, and that if I bought a phone from an AT&T store the rep might screw up and add the data, since Data Exclusion is such a rare feature, but that if I bought online the system would just leave me alone.
Now I just need to know if "4G" data works on the old Media Net plans.

Theres no real 4g anyways
just use the standard APN that was posted here for "unlimited tethering"
Since I have been on the phone with ATT for the last 3 days it has been one thing after another..first data issues coming from the iPhone they switched me over to a 2GB cap called them up they "fixed it" (basically added the smartphone pack. Yesterday got a few calls at work I let them go to VM...so i thought. Somehow my VM got messed up had to call about that. This morning I didn't get one text from anyone found a bit odd since me and the wife text a lot during work when we can. Checked online I had no text plan??? WTF!?? Called them up and guess what I had an older 1500 text plan they don't offer that so i cant get it...really?? come on ATT I just bought a phone no contract nothing should have changed.
So as of now everything seems ok, still working have a case open for my text plan and have gotten some credit back for the data stuff. But really i should have never gone through this whole mess when all I did was buy a phone out right and put my old sim in it.

AT&T recognizes the IMEI on all of their iphones. When I put my sim into my friends iphone, it asked me to update my data plan. Obviously, I did not...
It works on the Atrix, though I don't doubt if AT&T knew which phone I had, they would probably want me to upgrade. I asked a rep many years ago, they said I have some sort of legacy feature grandfathered in, but if I make any type of changes to my plan, I would lose it. I cannot remember what they call it. Thus I cannot purchase a phone with an AT&T contract. Pretty lame, but that has been my experience and what I have been told. Not all reps know what they are talking about.
I'm not here to argue with anyone. I know which plan I have, and I know I have an Atrix. All I did was take my sim from my old phone out and put it into my new Atrix and it works without complaining for me to upgrade my data plan.
However, I am not impress with the HSUPA speeds, and it seems everyone has the same issue whether they are on a $30 unlimited plan, or $20 medianet bundle.
I hope this helps, good luck guys!
Well, I don't see anything called "Smartphone Exclusion" in either of my lines (this is a 2 line family plan, only my phone has the medianet unlimited).
I guess I'll need to wait and buy a Bell Canada version of the phone?
If you are checking it online, it doesn't show as a regular feature. There is a link that shows "other features" ... or just call them up and ask if you have it.
I did upgrade one of my lines, they added $15 in the store. I just called them and got that off of the line, luckily the smart phone exclusion did not go away!

The smartphone exclusion feature only covers you for your current device. If you put your SIM into a phone that Att recognizes as a valid smartphone that is different than the one you currently have on file, your grandfather status is gone and you get a smartphone data plan. Happened to a few people I know. No commitment pricing has nothing to do with it, since its in the Att terms of service, I think. If you are getting grandfather status back, the sales people are likely making exceptions.
i dont know but Mine too is media net plan since touch pro 2, nexus one, captivate and atrix.

Did he buy the phone subsidized or off the contract? And can you learn if he complained after he got the phone and AT&T automatically switched him to the limited plan?
Thanks in advance
I just thought of this.
I'm on a 4 person family plan all with unlimited data. The 3 other people are willing to give up unlimited but I'm not. I'm willing to pay full price for my phone but I figured out a way to get it for cheaper.
Open a 5th line for $9.99 per month. Use this line's upgrade every 20 months. Swap the upgraded phone with a spare feature phone.
$9.99 x 20 (cost to maintain 5th line) = $200
$250 (subsidized phone after taxes)
= $450
Paying $450 vs $650 for full retail would be a $200 savings. Better than nothing right?
Yes but you would have to have data on that line also for a bit, then dump the data and keep a dumbphone activated

I can just keep data for 1 day and dump it...and that's where the $9.99 x20 comes in. Keeping it activated for 20 months.
The problem is, as soon as you upgraded that line, forcing a new contract, they could, conceivably, seeing as you would be out of contract on the rest of your lines, force you out of unlimited.

good question, I kept data on that line for a month just to be sure I wouldn't have any issues.
Also, if you are going to go this route, better off waiting for big deals like amazon's 1 penny deal.

umm, no they don't. Bought several phones off of amazon, as long as the line stays active, they don't know what you are doing on it. They get a commision based of selling you the line.
I've bought 5 phones on amazon and swapped them between lines and put a dumb phone on one of the lines a month after I got it. No fees.
That's my plan and it'll work don't let people BS you and say it won't. People trollen around because their not unlimited.

I'm a bit confused. I thought that after 06/28/2012, if you upgrade a phone thats on a family plan, with a new one at a subsidized price they force you and all lines in the shared plan to move to the new shared data plans.
That would technically screw the other people with unlimited data on the family share plan. Verizon might be able to get away with this because you have to sign a new contract for the upgrade. This contract would override any previous ones.
I could be completely wrong but I thought the reason you could keep unlimited data if you paid full price for a new phone is you don't sign a new 2 year service contract. Basically if you pay full price for a phone Verizon could care less if you even activate it. Not that a sane person would do this but you could go into a store, pay full retail for a phone and smash it with a hammer right there on the sales counter.
Am I completely missing something?
Another thing I can't figure out are people not in a family share plan. If someone only has 1 line with unlimited data, how can they force you into the new plans if you upgrade your phone at the subsidized price? You can't share data without having another phone.
I believe that after the 28th any line change, other than a device change for warranty or full retail purchase will require a new contract, therefore removing unlimited on all lines.

They can't do that though without letting you out of your contracts. Each line has its own contract.

Don't forget about the taxes and other charges on the line. I have around an additional $8-$9 in taxes and other fees on that line.
My plan was that since my sister has the 2 GB data plan that if I ever had an upgrade in the future, I could give her mine and then buy the phone with her line, then just put my SIM in it. I still keep my unlimited and get the subsidized Price

You don't have to keep data activated at all. They don't require it, yet. I did this with an upgrade to the Tbolt for the reasons you said. Heck, if you buy the phone 250 then pay the 350 ETF you still come out ahead of paying full comp.(albeit not by much.) The actual line charge ends up being about ~14 a month. so really 280 instead of 200. But that being said, its still cheaper than the full retail way. I had the money to buy the Tbolt outright, but I still did it that way because it was cheaper.

No, just on the new line. She never activated data on my "new" line when I bought the thunderbolt. She just activated the sim to my current number and I put it in. Which now, if I did it again, I wouldn't even have to get a new sim. She, the VZW rep, just activated an old Krzr I had on the last line and it is still there without ever having data activated on that line. I was saying that I was never charged extra for not having data on that "new" line even though I used it to buy a "smartphone".

So I wanted to add a new line for $10 a month and get the Note 2. Apparently that doesn't work on that plan. Only unlimited data plan. I wasn't about to pay $30 a month for a flip phone so i asked nicely and they gave me an upgrade early. Was supposed to be march. YMMV but it may work for you all also on shared data and no upgrade.
I decided to get the RAZR MAXX HD until next week, that way i'll exchange and only pay restocking fee. Needed something now since my Gnex is crapping on me.
So they let you upgrade 4 months in advance? They won't even let me upgrade 1 month in advance...

I don't think this applies to my family plan. I have unlimited data, my sister has a shared data plan, and my two parents have no data. We pay $30 for her data, $30 for mine, + $10/line for all our lines + our base plan. We can add another line np for $10 and add a dummy phone. There is no extra charge for data, I don't think, for adding a line and using a shared data package...
Like i said, guess it works only on Family plans or plans with unlimited data.
Shared data it does not. They wanted $30 a month for a flip phone. That's a joke! lol
and for Lambo, call corporate. Be nice and talk to them. I'm sure they'd love to help you like they did for me.

I have a family plan with 2 smartphones with unlimited data, 2 regular flip phones and my daughters is 2 gb a month, on the 2 unlimited I have a upgrade,,..
what Im wanting to do is have my 2 upgrades swapped to my regular flip phones and take those flip phones with new upgrades and upgrade both to 2 note2,,..
then when I get them home, swap them to my unlimited data lines, and keep my unlimited data -is this possible?- also all this is thru verizons call in site, thanks for helping in advance.
I got a family plan. Can I go into the store, add another line, activate the note 2 onto my line, activate a dumb phone on the new line n still keep my unlimited data?
Or I got an upgrade. Can I swap my upgrade to one of the lines that has tiered data n still keep my unlimited?

Yes you can swap upgrades- my neighbor had a upgrade on a unlimited device in her family plan and swapped the upgrade to her sons flip phone, then she bought a smartphone on the flip phone line and when she got home she switched the smartphone to her unlimited line and kept flip phone on the upgraded line, so yes you can. so she answered my question I had posted earlier.
she said be sure and watch all your other upgrade dates because sometimes the line that had the original upgrade will change dates too.

This doesn't mean unlimited was retained. VZW has done some pretty shady stuff with switching people's service due to upgrades/abuse of network. Maybe this was also in the past when they didn't care so much that people had unlimited data, but now they will practically do anything to push you off o fit.

I think most will price it at 500. That being said, some people will try to undercut IMO around 450-475 to sell it faster than the people who sell it at 500. Offer around 400-425 and I'm sure you can find someone if you have cash in hand and will pick it up that day. I personally am not payin much more than that for a phone on Craigslist unless we meet at a store, they upgrade get the n2, and I get the box brand new in hand. Otherwise i may as well pay the extra 200 myself and for sure not get stabbed and or robbed.

I got my dad a 6 month early upgrade and used it to order the note ii
i never per-se activated the device though, i just bypassed the activation screen by hitting the bottom two corners and then volume down, played with the phone for a bit, then after my gs3 copied all of my data off the phone to my sd cars, i popped my sim card in and voila, it worked!
did i do something wrong, i don't want to lose unlimited
Hi guys so just like most of you in here, I'm waiting on the galaxy s4 for Verizon. I am currently eligible for an upgrade, but I have a question regarding a a possible loophole for keeping my unlimited data. I share the account with my father along with 3 other lines. If I were to transfer the upgrade to another one of the lines and "upgrade" that line and then deactivate/reactivate on my line, would I be able to keep my unlimited data? And how would I go about doing this online with the preorder? Thanks for your time!
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
There is a thread on here about keeping unlimited data. Do a search and you should find it.
You will lose the unlimited data on the line that's ready to upgrade, if you don't transfer it. If you decide to transfer the upgrade from the line that has the unlimited data, you'll be safe & won't lose it. I hope this helps.

Do what I did. I just bit the bullet and went to shared data but sold my unlimited data plans first.
I sold my wifes and mine for $750 combined. It will take years for me to make up that difference as I WFH three days a week so I am around wifi pretty much 5 out of 7 days.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I am going to try to just upgrade one of the other lines that's on a basic connection and then just activate the phone on my line when I get it. When I go to preorder online, it asks if I will be purchasing a SIM card and if not it asks for the SIM ID that I will be using. Should I purchase another SIM card or just give them mine? Im not sure of the process so I'm iffy about giving them my SIM ID because I'm not sure what that will do. any help is much appreciated.

How do you "sell" these plans? I have two unlimited lines and one 4GB/$30 line that I would like to sell off, as we will likely not buy the phones at full price.
If you have an upgrade available on another line you can use that, but you need to first activate it onthe line you bought it for, then transfer it to the unlimited line.
Another prospective option ive considered and decided against is starting a new line, paying $199.99 plus $30 activation, and then immediately terminating for $350. You get it for $70 plus tax cheaper than paying full retail.
That $199 ends up being just over $300 when you finally click submit. $50 MIR makes it $249.99 to start.

I've had success in transfering the upgrade to the basic line on my account that did not have data. Once you get the phone, reactivate the basic phone on the basic line. Then activate the new phone on your original upgrade line with unlimited data.
OT: I ended up ditching unlimited. The extra $$/mon savings was worth more than keeping it. I'm on wifi for about 90% of my data anyway. My employer-provided (yes, I keep separation btwn work/personal) phone still has unlimited and I can tether to it if I need to.
Hey guys; new here, awaiting the Verizon GS4
I had luck when the iPhone 5 came out keeping my unlimited Data. We have 5 lines with two still on unlimited, 3 on the 2gb. With 5 we almost always have at least one available for an upgrade. I was on a Galaxy Nexus with unlimited and I upgraded another line that had a 2gb plan. When the phone arrived I simply did the switch online with the new imei and the nano sim on my unlimited line replacing my Nexus. Everything went smooth.
Since then I purchased a nano sim adapter and have often switched back and forth between the iPhone and the Nexus; I'm Nerdy that way. No problem switching the sim between phones. I run whichever phone I want depending on my mood. My nexus is fully rooted and running the Sourcery Custome ROM and the latest Franco Kernal.
What I did was this: My wifes ona share everything plan while I still have unlimited. We added a line to HER share everything plan, got the S4 @200$... And I will just swap devices on VZW website from the bionic I use now. My mother in law works for VZW said I should be able to just put my unlimited SIM in the S4, and it will work right away...However, may need to activate it on the line line, deactivate it, put on mine.... (We have tablets for our kids just incase they require a device on that new line, we will simply give one of those access)

I've had success in transfering the upgrade to the basic line on my account that did not have data. Once you get the phone, reactivate the basic phone on the basic line. Then activate the new phone on your original upgrade line with unlimited data.

what happens to the basic line after deactivating it ( since u have to put it on a data plan for it to have smartphone...) do u have to call and cancle the data or will that happen automatically after deactivating smartphone and putting old "dumb" phone back on it? will this result in a fee?
Thanks in advanced to anyone who can help...

They had one but I would have to change to everything plan. Is it really worth it to lose my unimited data and off contract on two devices just for this watch???

They will not let me do that as it changes my unlimited data plan. I would pay retail price to do so if I were allowed.

Hell NO don't give up your unlimited data for that damn watch what is wrong with you unless you are not a data hog and you don't mind paying overages for your devices
I am looking for opinions before making a rash decision. I appreciate the previous comments and am looking for others.
Edit: a store rep did some research. I can keep the unlimited for my phone if I buy the gear s as a separate device paying $25/month with no 2 year contract.
I am wondering if this would work. I have a at&t galaxy s5 and want to buy a nano sim adapter. http://microsim-shop.com/
i would buy the watch off contract. When I want to take just my watch I pop in the nano sim and go, when I want my phone, I put the nano sim in the adapter for the s5.
This way I won't lose my unlimited data, wonder if it will work?

So with 25$ a month no contract would you just pay 25$ what ever month you needed it? or ,,,

Yes as far as I was told by the store sales rep. I do not want to be locked into a two year contract with smartphones/watches evolving so quickly. For all I know I will use the gear s for a while and find it is not worth having or paying $25/month. I still should be able to connect via Bluetooth at no Verizon cost.

I really want a standalone device at least to see if it is viable as such. I can always go the Bluetooth route but it might be harder the other way as Verizon plans change.

I see what your saying
I am waiting to see a full review of the watch and the gear manager to appear in the Play store for my Note 4. I also cannot afford it plus the time in the store until later this month.
Gear Manager wont be in the play store its on Galaxy App store.

I'm told you can add the gear s to a grandfathered family plan with the old data lines 9.99 + 20/300mb 30/3gb 50/5gb. Im waiting to buy one off contract and put one of my unlimited line's sim card in it. There's no reason it shouldn't work unless they have the gear imei's flagged (like a tablet in an unlim phone plan). I haven't found anyone saying they've done it yet though.
No sim card in Verizon's version. I will see what I can get out of the sales rep when I buy it for retail price.

I gave up my unlimited plan. I save 100 bucks a. On the for 4 lines. ATT throttles you after 3gb of data use to 2G speed.

I decided that unlimited data was more important. If i cannot keep it, , no Gear S.
