Screen turns itself on and off? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I have had my Galaxy S II for a while and have been absolutely loving it after upgrading from my Captivate, and haven't found the need to root it and load it up with custom roms JUST yet, but one thing that's been annoying lately is that when it is just sitting here not doing anything, the screen will randomly turn on for no reason, no notifications or anything and then turn off after a couple seconds. happens every couple of minutes generally but occasionally it will do it several times within a short amount of time. I was thinking one of my apps or something is responsible but I am unsure of how to isolate which is doing it and why. Hoping someone has had a similar problem and has gotten to the bottom of it, cause id like the screen to stay off when im not using it lol.

Probably wifi. Maybe one of your neighbors has a wifi signal that drops in and out and your phone keeps picking it up

just checked, wifi has been off all evening.

Maybe look for an app that will log what apps or processes are running and how long? Might help you to see what is causing your issue.
Other than that, im if no help. Hopefully we can get you done resolution soon bud.

Aside from this, sometimes I also see advertisement notifications which get really annoying too and I just don't know what app they are coming from. so I just went ahead and installed watchdog and maybe it shall help figure this out, thanks guys.

[Q] Does your Note flash on and off quicky at midnight?

I have a Rogers Galaxy Note, rooted, but running stock.
Every night, at exactly midnight, it flashes on and off very quickly.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Nope

I do not know, I'm always sleeping at midnight. In the words of Bette Davis "Gettin' old ain't fer sissies!"
I'm usually up around midnight and I have not seen this. I'm on an AT&T Note though.

What rom are u using? Maybe flash a different ron to see if a software issue. Or do a factory reset.

I'm running the default stock Rogers rom.
If you're on the east coast, midnight is coming up. Check it. To test, just have your phone locked and screen off at midnight, and watch it. It doesn't reboot.. just flashes on and off quickly.
It's quite possible there is an app I have installed that is doing this, so tonight I plan on checking it with logcat. I'll report my findings afterward (PST).
You sure its not notifying you something but I would go with the posses idea. I see dead people comes to mind.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
doh! i was coding and forgot to plug in and check logcat. tune in tomorrow. sorry.
Its probably some app scheduled to do something at midnight over your wifi.
I know my Captivate used to do the same thing, any time the wifi was used, the screen would turn on briefly (less than a second) and turn off the screen while doing whatever it was doing over the wifi (like Beyondpod when it went to update my podcasts, the screen blinked on/off, then immediately after the screen turned off, it started checking for new episodes and downloading).
So it's either APOD, or it's my system. Those are the only two culprits. I'll uninstall APOD and report back tomorrow.

Hot random reboots after rooting?

Anyone know what causes this any way to fix it for good

I thought it was related to root but I've had these hot reboots even before rooting so it's not just root. Most likely an app.

Will take a while to hunt down the app but anybody else have 'LinkedIn' app installed? It just hot rebooted while launching that app from a fresh restart - quickest hot reboot I've ever seen.
It might not be that app but then I went to the Play Store page and there are tons of 1 star reviews because the last update failed on people's phones - more interestingly the most recent comment is from a GS2 user who says latest update reboots his phone.
I've uninstalled it and I doubt I can be that lucky that it's that app and I find it so quickly but crossing my fingers.
Mine rebooted after I opened the Navigation app.

Mine happened again. I've now uninstalled BetterBatteryStats. I'm going to start uninstalling stuff that uses root to roll that out. I've had these issues on stock but it happened rarely, lately it's been happening very frequently so something is going on.

I've had the same on mine. I rooted mine day 1, so no idea if it would have done it without root. I've defrosted everything in TB and still no luck.

Well I'm tired of the random hot reboots! Some people say it happened to them before rooting, but I don't believe it happened to me until I rooted and installed CWM touch......so I'm going back to stock to start all over again so I can try to narrow down the issue. I'll report back on my progress as it becomes available.

Happening often to me. The search continues. I've now uninstalled adfree. I'm positive this is an app since I had it occur on stock after two weeks of using the phone and installing crap.

I had the same problem on my previous Captivate and am having it now on the GS III; no rhyme or reason to the reboots that I can see.
I still have heat problem but I played w/ different settings to see what it is.... I had att s3 which got really really hot... So returned it for Verizon s3. Verizon is better but learned that the data (lte/s3) makes it really hot and battery drain. Also the screen, of course.
If you're rooted then go get Phone info and disable lte. I tried CDMA auto for Verizon and it got much better... But at lowered download speed. I change it when I speed the speed... Doesn't require reboot so it's easy to change.
U can also under clock using setCPU.
I don't need it to be fast normally except when playing games... So just have it at 384min and 1024max... I find this helps allot w/ heat as well... U can try and find your setting that's acceptable speed and heat.
Just sharing my experience here.... So good luck.

Happens here too with the T-Mobile GS3. I think they rushed their fabrication process to deliver a high volume and fubared a few hardwarewise. I've even had it lockup/freeze once when not even in the OS but just in the recovery menu's. But yeah, the usual is a totally random unpredictable hot reboot throwing out my resident programs, homescreen, ect. Starts with the screen being frozen and not accepting input, then a short vibration, then back to homescreen reloading and all regular apps and widges that are supposed to run at boot load again. It's as if there's a micro static short or something. Anyway, I'm sick of problem solving and looking through logcats. Going back in for warranty. This is a dream phone except for this ultra annoying bug that it seems not many people have.

Happened to me once or twice (that I noticed) in the two weeks before I rooted (stock UCALEM), and a few more times after. It's just TouchPiz being pizzy. Maybe someone can catch the logcat, but there's nothing we can do about it (except install a better ROM )
How would anyone be able to diagnose this BS
"OK. My phone is hot. And it randomly reboots".
"Crap - u r out of luck buddy. Go change ur damn phone".
Provide ur phone model, ROM version, apps installed. Check ur battery stats.
As a solution - flash any custom ROM which removes bloatware.

Wtf is wrong with my wi-fi!?!?

Ok my wife had a vibrant that is stock and rooted. I have noticed that if it has been rebooted I can turn on the Wi-Fi once but if I have to turn it off and then turn it back on at a later point in time it doesn't turn on. In fact it gets a Wi-Fi error until I reboot. I have also noticed that it seems to be slowing down quite bit. She is quite fond of touchwiz and would rather stick with it. If I have to switch to a better rom it would have to have touchwiz does anyone have any ideas? Thank everyone in advance and Merry Christmas

Here you go, this ROM has Twiz. As far as the WiFi issue, I'm at a loss.

Anyone have issues with ics ota?

So my girlfriend is still on her Tbolt. She's never wanted me to root it or anything so still stock. Anyway since the ics update the phone has become next to useless. She was complaining about it being slow, laggy etc. I thought she was exaggerating but after messing with it myself ya its really bad. Super slow to do anything and backup media force closes every few minutes.
Just curious if this is an isolated incident or if others have similar issues? I told her to try a factory reset but she doesn't want to do that yet.

My girlfriends phone apparently didn't take well to the update either. Hers never got FC's, but it froze a lot... especially on the lock screen. After a while, the screen started wigging out... it started scrolling around on its own and even made screen selections on its own.
Good thing I have a reliable source here that warned me about the ICS Goblins that come with the OTA and harass the user of the phone. I sent her phone in for an insurance claim and got her a new one and no more ICS Goblins harass her.
Disconnecktie, if you see this, thanks again!

It's actually a hardware issue. Otherwise Amazon would have an ota to fix it.

I've noticed mine flickering a little bit, but it doesn't happen all that often. I never used it stock, so I just figured it was an issue with the Gapps ROM. Again, it doesn't happen often, so it doesn't bother me too bad, but just to make your mind at ease....you aren't the only one to notice this.
by flickering, do you guys mean the aggressive auto brightness? because that i HAVE noticed. usually turn it off anyway though

No, this is a different item. Like you, I turn off the auto-brightness too. I haven't nailed down when it happens, but it's just a quick bit of feint flickering for me, then back to normal. Kind of hard to explain I guess. I've noticed it a couple times a day since I got mine last week with pretty heavy usage.

My thoughts exactly. The more I read some of the forums, the more I regret my decision of getting the HDX on sale vs the Nexus 7....I was looking at the great specs and not thinking of more, but last night showed me the potential this thing has when I installed the AOSP ROM. Not perfect, but potential. Liking AOSP over the Gapps ROM despite not having music and video.
While reading yesterday's XKCD "What if?", I was able to reproduce the flicker reasonably well. It showed up frequently on the white theme of "Press", but not the dark one (or I simply didn't notice it as much). I did a quick video showing it the best I could. Sorry for the shakiness. The primary time-frame it happens is between 12-16 second mark.
