Noob Questions! - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Okay, I got my S3 Yesterday. I have been stuck in iPhone world since 2009, so I am new to android. I have been watching videos and reading forums for the past few weeks. I don't want to root my phone. I just want to know if I can get different launchers and themes without having to root, and where is the best place to get them? Also, what is the easiest way to transfer my photos and music over from my iPhone to the s3?

GO Themes is my current theme handler that I am putting to use. I don't know if you could change the boot image without rooting it. And to transfer your photos and files over simply 1. stick them on a folder in your computer 2. transfer those files to a folder in your sdcard/phone via usb cable

You don't need root for launchers. You will only be able to theme your icons and some keyboards offer themes if you do not root.

That's fine, I don't really need themes, cause I can use different widgets to make the layout look better. Where do I get different launchers to try out and install. The play store? Also, can you have a live wallpaper on the lock screen as well?

Yes the Play Store and if you are using stock firmware I believe the live wallpaper on your homescreen shows up on your lockscreen.

I haven't had much time to mess around with it yet. Hopefully this weekend I can get it fully set up the way I want to.

I really don't have any complaints. I like the full customization and the awesome animations and widgets. The only one complaint I do have is email. The email program on the s3 is very mesy and hard to navigate compared to the email system on the iPhones. Is there another all in one email application to run where I can manage all my email accounts in one nicely organized place?

I would experiment with stuff before you root. I wish I didn't root so soon because now my Google wallet is messed up and I can't even turn on my nfc. While others have not had this issue, it's still annoying. In would hold off for a little bit

It's good to have you onboard Android, sir!
You can change a lot without rooting your device, that's ONE area where Android shines compared to iOS.
1) THEMES AND LAUNCHERS:
-GO Launcher EX is fairly good for that. You can download many different themes and such from the android market.
-NOVA Launcher. I haven't used this yet, as I only have an LG Ally, (Android 2.2 isn't supported), but many have said this is better than GO Launcher.
-APEX Launcher. I'm in the same boat with this as with NOVA
-You can change messaging apps and such for different themes as well Handcent SMS
2) TRANSFERRING MEDIA: The other huge area where Android is amazing! You basically just plug it into your USB port on your computer, Drop down your notifications bar, and select something along the lines of "Transfer Files Via USB." It will then act as if it were just a usb thumbdrive, where you can copy and paste music to the music folder and pictures to your pictures folder, etc.
I hope this has helped at least a little!

I'll do what I can to help you out.
Best email program - I only have exp with Gmail & TW email. I like them both
Organize programs - AppZorter
sync music - there are a bunch of software that can do it: Kies, Samsung Media something, Media Monkey. Google it & you'll probably get more results than I listed
here is a list for you buddy on what to remove and not to...

to get the apps sorted better i prefer using a different launcher. Launcher pro is the one i use but any of them will put them in alphabetical. Cant believe samsung dont have an option in touchwiz to do that, seems quite a basic omission.
email i just use the stock one but k9 email is also pretty good.
not sure what you mean by the voice commands, you should just tap the home button twice and the voice control screen comes up
Best email: K9 Mail.

point is the standard everyday user shouldnt have to come to xda and download a modded theme just to get the app drawer showing alphabetical. Its a pretty standard request from everyone and a pretty big omission from samsung.

true and i fully agree with you and the way you sort folders in touchwiz is pretty **** compare to the go launcher..but still i think the update of touchwiz fixes all of that now

Widget Locker/ unlock to aftermarket launcher.

Just wanted to let every body know Widget locker works great on the Nook Tablet.
Since we can't make the Nook button go right to a aftermarket launcher, I started to play around with widget locker. You can get it from the amazon appstore for $2.99
I set it up so I Have a short cut to go launcher right on my lock screen.
Also if you go to advance setting and click always unlock to home. You will also get the popup where you choose which home to go to and you can select Use by default for this action.
Nice, beat me to it. I emailed the developer for WL last night to see if he could email me the APK to try on the NT. I've bought it on Android Marker (didn't want to have to buy it agian) but I haven't heard back. Looks like it works though, good stuff.
thanks a lot for the tip. works awesomely, i dont even care about root/cfw anymore. with this easy launcher the tablet does everything i ever wanted it to.

I agree (somewhat). While I still want to get CM installed on it in the near future, I'm pretty satisfied with the workarounds that were obtained in under 2 days. this more than holds me over for what I want to do with it.
I can't get that kind of service anywhere else!
If only we could install 3d party keyboards....this would be mint.

You probably know this, but I've been able to install all my paid apps by emailing the apk from my phone to myself, opening gmail in the web browser and then installing from there.
ADW EX Launcher works perfect.
The apk sharing app that I use is:

That app worked alright, I jammed up my gmail with it though, I had about 10 emails that got stuck on sending for like ahour while it super heated my phone. I wound up rebooting to stop it, it prolly was most likely some in my setup of my extremely modded phone though.
It did work great using backup to sd, then astro to share via dropbox!

Zedge Issue - different between web and app?

I downloaded Zedge to try and get some cool wallpapers for my Galaxy Nexus. I downloaded a few Nexus themed ones, then the app updated. Now there are no Nexus wallpapers in the App (through search). But, they are still on the Zedge website...
Also, I searched for "Tennessee" wallpapers on the app and found a few, but the same search on the web produces nothing.
Why is there a difference between the app and the website? Anyone else notice this?
Hi,
There is no wallpapers at all? That's very strange. There are no difference between the web and the app and the selection of wallpapers, unless you choose another device in the device selector at web than the one you are actually using.
Try reinstall the app and see if you get wallpapers.
If you still don't get any wallpapers please contact us using "feedback" in the phone menu ( More - Help & FAQ - Feedback ).
Hope it will work again,
Sincerely,
Matias
Product Marketer - Zedge.net
There are wallpapers in the app, but they are completely different from the ones offered in the website.
In fact, my brother in law came over last night and he has the exact same phone running the exact same rom. On his phone edge shows completely different wallpapers. His shows the new nexus ones but mine shows only the old ones. This happens when you start the app and browse and also with searches.
We've both uninstalled and reinstalled and this difference persists. Weird.

Zedge only displays wallpapers that fit your devices screen size. They may be why your lacking them on your phone. As for the pc search i have no idea. Also you need to reimport your zedge downloads if they are not showing up. This can be done from the zedge settings

There may be problems with the useragent served and our auto detection of the phone. If the two phones have different useragents we may handle them differently.
Like I said earlier, please report it through feedbacks in the app. If we see that others have the same problem we are able to fix it. Now it's just really hard for us to reproduce.
Which ROM are you using?
Edit: We do not support custom roms officially (or at least our software for device detection doesn't), so if you have custom ROM we may struggle to give you the right wallpaper class. Hopefully something like that will be fixed in a patch, but that is not a problem with the App itself, but the device detection which is powered by Wurlf.

Has anyone tried this, and if so what is your opinion of it?

Yeah I made the mistake of spending that $10 and have to say I'm thoroughly disappointed at the moment with how slow they're adding features and widgets... if it had only been a couple of dollars then it'd be OK but come on.... its $10.... give me my money's worth now:banghead:

Are you using it still, or did you go back to a different launcher?
I still have it installed and keep it updated .... waiting for it to be worth what I paid for it... but my default launcher is Nova (i like the folders) and sometimes Apex (I like Apex because of all the available themes)
Like TSF Shell also... just starting to use it

Thanks for reply, I might wait and see what happens. I paid $15.00 for spb shell and haven't used it lately. I have two touchpads (one for my son to use) plus one that I got for my sister, which has my Google set as a second account. So if I installed it on all three it might be worth it. Went to Chameleon's website and looked around, there are some Widgets that users have made and instructions to make your own. It looks like simple ones are just copy and paste, but I am not a coder by any means.
By the way we have the same devices. Started with the streak, got as far as unbranding it to get the gb update from dell.

From what I can tell from the forums on Chameleons site is, the widget is a web page in a window. If I am correct then it would be about useless unless you are connected to internet.
Yeah Chamelon is rather craptastic. I had such high hopes for it, all the widgets are essentially web pages and the ones that come with it are less than stellar nor configuratble.(all widgets have a grotesque bored of some sort) And the g+ and gmail widgets are basically them getting and delivering instead of just allowing native.(meaning you have to auth them to access your stuff to display) all the widgets that you can make dont run local unless you setup your own webserver. The location changes can easy be accomplished via Tasker. AND to top that off you cant even use normal system widgets or generic app widgets that ALL android launchers support.
BasicallyI'm having buyers/donaters remorse of 10$ for such a **** launcher and i'll just stick with zeam.

Are themes downloaded or stored?

My question is are the themes that come with themer, actually all stored on the phone or are they downloaded as you use them? I was looking at the app in the playstore...and it just seems like a lot of themes to have stored on your phone. Am I missing something? Or are they dl to your phone as needed?
I realize themes you export to your phone are stored on the phone, I am wondering about all the themes that actually come with the app. Thanks
