Confirmed working USB DAC's? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Hello all!
This could be the place for people to detail what outboard DAC's they're using with their GSIII. All of you audio centric people can use it as a source when shopping for a USB DAC.
Post some details about your phone, and what you worked with! Also, post what hasn't worked for you and maybe more knowledgeable members can help you out.
I looked for a thread on this and couldn't find anything so far. Hopefully this one will be helpful.
Here is a list so far of DAC's that are reported to work with the GSIII. Note that some of these also have amplifiers integrated in them.
-Emmeline "The Predator" (predator of wallets!)
-Fiio E7
-Headstage USB DAC cable
-HRT MusicStreamer II
-iBasso D12
-ODAC (Objective DAC by NwAvGuy and Yoyodyne Consulting)
-Topping D1 MKII
-Topping TP30
Here are some DAC's that people have reported DON'T work with the GSIII
-Fiio E17
-M-Audio Transit
Any others or corrections, please fill me in.

Anybody tried using one yet?

Are you talking about this?
http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/music_box/2010/12/dulcet_downloads.html
If so, nope. I don't think I'll ever have the need for one as I'm fine with what I use currently.
I'm not enough of an audiophile for it to matter.

Fiio E7 has been. I believe DACs based on TI USB controllers are more compatible at this stage.

That is the device that I'm talking about. However, there are many types of that device from pocketable versions to much larger components for your living room.
It might not appeal to you, but its becoming pretty popular these days for the hifi crowd.

I accidentally started a new thread with the exact same topic, whoops.
Here's what I can add:
Works:
Headfonia USB DAC cable
HRT MusicStreamer II
Doesn't Work:
M-Audio Transit

Also I am guessing that you meant to write "Headstage USB DAC" it looks like it was just reviewed by Headfonia. No biggie.

Thanks for starting this thread....I would love to get better audio output from my GS3 into my car stereo system.
One quick question....Is there any way to have one of these USB DAC devices hooked up and be able to charge the GS3 at the same time?
I would love to be able to put my GS3 in a dock, hook one cable up to the microUSB, and have it be able to go to the USB DAC, charge the phone, and go into car mode. The car mode could possibly be achieved via NFC tags.
I appreciate any input on this.

No problem. I figured there must be some other curious people like me out there!
Maybe another person who has tried this can chime in, but it seems like you could do it. Possibly if you used a USB hub you could accomplish what you're trying to? Try and dig up a pin out of the GS3's usb port. It also may be possible for you to take an MHL or USB adapter and separate the pins used for charging from the pins used for audio out. Then you could potentially splice the wires to two separate plugs, one used for charging and the other for the USB data.
If that doesn't work, you could try and do the palm touchstone charging mod to your phone so that you keep charging and audio out totally separate. That's pretty involved just for a car dock but hey, I'm not one to know your DIY ability!
For me personally, car audio doesn't seem like the environment to benefit from a separate DAC. With road noise and all, would there be that much to gain quality wise? Haha, I'm probably just of that mind set because my car is pretty loud. Good luck with your project dude.

The Fiio E6 isn't a DAC, but rather a headphone amp.

Haha, there there. No worries!

I updated the OP with a few more DAC's that have been reported to work. Let me know if you've had any experiences with these or others.

Bought Fiio e7 on Amazon and its en route. Should be here tomorrow. S3's DAC is too noisy and e7 will definitely come on handy.
Btw, those who already have one, will e7 use phone's power if it runs out of own battery power? Leaving on a trip soon and need to know if I should buy one of those 12,000 mAh battery packs just in case.

I don't know if you can use the S3's power to charge your E7 but I can tell you that the E7 has CRAZY long battery life. As long as you remember to turn it off. I'm really not sure you'll need it.

Ok, got my e7 and my gawd this thing is amazing. It can go so loud that it would probably blow my ears and headphones before I even get to 50%. Also, on the other side of the spectrum, it can play so quiet that ambient noise is louder than my music, lol. My goal was clarity at extra quiet volume and yes, e7 delivered what I was hoping for 100%. Set e7's volume to 1/60, phone's volume to 1/15, lower PlayerPro's volume even lower and wow the sound is still crystal clear. Of course there is still some of that natural white noise you usually get from electronic devices, which is almost nonexistent compared to other DAC's I've tried, but that can be easily fixed for the peace of mind by setting volume to 30/60 and then using a pair of resistors to lower the overall volume back to 1/60.
Oh and also, looks like the e7 WILL charge from the phone if you want to. Plugged it into the phone, made sure the "usb chg" is on, and I do see the battery icon on the e7 scrolling indicating that it's charging. Not that I'd need that after fully charging e7 before using but still, it's nice to see such flexibility
TL;DR: Mind, blown. The best $71 I've ever spent.

I was under the impression that the E7 had issues with the GS3. Now I'm intrigued.

2-in-1 [USB Mini/3.5 MM] adapter

So I just purchased this handy little adapter which takes the USB port on the bottom of the G1 and turns it into a USB Mini jack and a 3.5 MM headphone jack. Why go to all this trouble? So I can charge AND play music at the same time
I bought this little piece of wonder off of Amazon for $6 including shipping, and it arrived in 3 business days. I'm really glad I bought it! Here's the review I posted on Amazon:
This is truly a neat little device. I often want to play music in my room over my T-Mobile G1, and it's a battle of charge versus play. I have to make sure that if I do play music, I'll have time afterwords to charge back up. Not the case anymore! I'm able to play music and charge my phone at the same time.
The adapter is very compact for what it does; it looks much bigger in the pictures than it actually is. It's about the size of a quarter, and a little longer width-wise. Sound quality is great; compared to the stock adapter that comes with the G1, I found that bass frequencies are carried much more better and with a little more "oompf". I found a lot more power for my system, and it works great.
The build quality is what you would expect; plastic build with very solid adapter ports. I don't expect it to break at all. The phone charges at the same rate of speed as normal, even with playing music. The port that plugs into the phone is the proprietary port that the G1 has, and the "out" USB port is your typical mini-USB port.
Overall, it's a great product, and a must have for all G1 users!

I definitely would recommend this to just about everyone, and wanted to know what everyone else's experience is with this product!
i just ordered this...i was tired of having to take out my headphones when i wanna charge my phone
I have the 3 in one charger but what i really need is something just like this but i need to have each port n an opposite side. Why you ask?
I have a Moto p790 charger and i would like to be able to have that plugged in while i have my headphones in. now that would be useful.
kind of like this one but smaller.

Did you try switching earbuds? Haha sounds simple...but I have this really bad luck with audio devices, that eventually everyone I have I break the soldering points that connect the jack to the circuit board, and I always loose an ear of sound. It's just odd...but that could be it as well.

I bought this and it works with every rom I've tried. Cyanogen, JAC, JF.
I also needed an extension so I could hard wire my charger and line in behind my car dash with only one lead showing and the HTC adaptor has about an inch of cable between the EXTUSB and the adaptor itself. I hunted high and low but could only find one company who could do it and it were these guys.
Jays Earphones
I want one of these but it's much too thick for what I wanted it for (I only want music), Isn't there one that has only mini USB to 3.5 mm? I thought I had seen one a while ago.
I got one made by HTC when I got my Wing a couple years ago. It works great on my G1 and my MT. It is super handy to have it you listen to a lot of music
got a link where I could get one?
def. getting this tonight
Tried this on a friends G1 (stock T-mobile firmware lastest updates) and it does not come up with a headset icon like it does on my touchdiamond2. Does this mean it does not work or is the headset icon just for when you have a microphone attached?
i've noticed on the HTC one that the 3.5mm headset jack doesnt work. you need to use the adapter cable that came with the phone and plug it into the headphone port on the htc adapter.

microphone?
When using this on a G1, if you plug a headset with microphone into the 3.5mm jack, does the microphone work on calls? I've read mixed reviews about this on Amazon and wondering if anyone has had experiences? Thanks,
I just got an HTC YC A300 today and it's working brilliantly!
It's 4-in-1, with extUSB headset plug, 2,5mm (mic+headphone), 3,5mm and extUSB power and data.

Analog or digital dongle?

probably too early to ask but does anybody know kind of dongle you need to access audio through headphones since oneplus is being dumb and doing away with the headphone jack? on a T version no less. i don't know if i will be buying this but asking anyways as i am sure there might be day i agonize over this.

removing normal audio connector is NOT an advance technology.
I'm pretty sure some companies will continue supply demand on keeping useful features.
Also, I regret that I got oneplus6 instead of note9.
in the end oneplus is a trash company with trash product.
cannot wait sams galaxy s10plus.
will see if sams will go retarded too.
another point, I'm paying high dollar and expect to get every possible feature in my phone !!
To get back on topic, does anyone know if the dongle is digital or analog?
Correction: better wording is active or passive.
I would say passive, but couldn't find the info

Digital with a DAC built into the cable/connector.
FWIW,HTC's USonic USB-C earbuds work just fine with the OP6T:
https://www.htc.com/us/accessories-b/#!pid=htc-u12-plus&acc=htc-adaptive-earphones-type-c-htc-u11
They're available at Amazon/eBay,don't pay full retail if you're interested, just an inexpensive alternative to OP's buds.
https://www.amazon.com/HTC-Usonic-USB-Type-Headset/dp/B079NQLR9S
They're very basic,no in-line volume control,& none of the fine-tuning capabilities as when used w/an HTC phone, but, they get the job done.
To answer your question;
Analog (one without a built in DAC, aftermarket ones, you know, the adapters that don't work on Pixel's, HTC, Razer, Essential, Samsung, LG, ZTE) works fine, but you might see a loss in audio, maybe by like 10% (hard to hear, but I can kinda tell the difference between this aftermarket adapter and the DAC one.)
Digital (one with built in DAC) obviously works fine with the phone, and gives you the button options on the headphones, unlike the analog one. Might drain the battery faster though, because the DAC one did get a little warm.
Motorola and OnePlus are the only phones in my testing that actually work, regardless if it's an adapter without a DAC or not, which I think it pretty cool (but I mean you can go to Apple and buy a USB-C to 3.5mm [which probably has a built in DAC] for $9 USD plus tax.)

Ok so I dont have and with that many poles, but I did test both of the adapters cables with iPhone headphones (3 pole) and did a stereo sound test video and they both passed. hope this helps?
Another update, these cables seem to charge the phone super super slow which freakin sucks -_-. It seems to be enough to keep the phone from draining too much, but certainly no where even close to quick charge. Someone needs to make something specifically for the 6t!
I'm also looking out for such a cable, I have no access to bluetooth in the vehicles i drive ( either line in, or cassette adaptor to headphone jack) and in most cases its not practical to add bluetooth adaptors ( power cable routing etc)
Since phone makers are dropping the headphone jack a stupid move why don't they just put two typc-c ports on a phone. One on the top and one on the bottom. Really many like to charge while using headphones.

It wouldn't make sense to make more room in the phone for other hardware only to put another input to take it's place.
USB type c inputs look small to me.

Any good loud but cheap type C adaptor?

The original type c adaptor thats included is weak in terms of volume so I've been using the essential ph-1 type c adaptor which boosts volumes considerably higher.
Unfortunately I've lost it! So now on the hunt of a good replacement
Any recommendations that people have bought?

I use the one from Pixel and it's much better than stock. It has built in DAC.
Does the phone know to let the dongle DAC do the audio conversion or does it still try to push analog for the dongle to 'pass-thru'?
i wouldnt use any other adaptor than the stock. i would prefer to give 20-30 euros for the stock from official huawei

stock dongle is like 5-10 bucks
Not much here besides to confirm that the apple usb-c to 3.5mm works well, just picked one up from the apple store. Koss portapros sound fine to my ears with spotify. Don't have audiophile ears by any means but cranked to max volume, it's just about right for me so ymwv. Bluetooth might be better but over here in Canada, there's far greater chance of running into an Apple store/retailer than it is to find a shop thats even heard of Huawei let alone going to stock a "Huawei" USB audio dongle lol if you want to keep a wired solution.
Coming from honor 8 with 3.5mm native, I'd probably be on 1/2 to 2/3rds volume.

Solution: Poor quality audio and low volume usb-c to 3.5mm output

When i got the P20 Pro in October i was astonished at how BAD the audio quality and volume output was. That was using the supplied official usb-c to 3.5mm cable of course.
I found the same using the P30 Pro using the same cable.
Then i discovered there is cables out there with much better DAC's in the cables - as its digital to analogue cable. Bottom line problem solved....deep bass, clear mids, and sweet treble.
This is the cable i got https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07KW3XYQX

To be honest i havent tried with headphones - i use the phone mainly in the car for music using the AUX input to the sound system. It was really bad quality before i got the new cable. Transformed the sound completely, like buying a new hifi lol.
The headphones i do use tend to require an amp to get the most out of them, AKG K550 and Sennheiser HD590......
I am surprised that none of the reviews picked up on this cable short coming, particularly in the P20 Pro reviews since it comes with a cable.....

I have their wireless headphones, Freelace, but it's annoying because when using on my P30 Pro the sound vs video is delayed (1-2 seconds). Tryed in dev option to change codec, but still an issue.
