[Q] Clockwork mod - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

Any way we can get a newer version of CWM recovery or is our phone still too new? I checked in ROM Manager, but the SGSII is listed.

It has nothing to do with that actually. Once Nightlies are installed, we can see a device listed in ROM manager. Until we have nightlies? No.
Pretty much, yes you do have a newer version, but even the SGSII doesn't natively install the newest version. That's a boot version that we won't use until there is a proper build on Clockwork Mod's servers for our devices. Once that happens we will see it.

[Q] Rom manager on Android 2.1?

So, my wife just got her new vibrant. I rooted, and started going about getting a few useful apps...then discovered that apparently, on the stock Android 2.1, ROM Manager is no longer available. Mine, (2.2 custom ROM) shows it in the marked. On my wife's phone, though, there's only premium. Simple fact is, after just buying a couple hundred dollar phone, we can't afford a $10.00 app as well.
Anyone know of any place where I can get an older version of ROM Manager free, or even an Odin flashable CWM Recovery? Anything I can use to get her running a non-stock ROM?
Nevermind. I managed to copy the (2.2) app from my Ti backup onto her phone, and it's working like a charm...no clue why it's not available in the market, and appbrain said it wasn't compatible...
Should anyone else have the issue, if you can get it onto the phone, the newest ROM Manager works just fine on 2.1
You can pull the free version APK from data/app folder on your phone. Oops you already got it, sorry.

Same problem
I just rooted my phone and it automatically installed android 2.1 as the software on my phone, I cannot update my software through the phone as clockwork recovery blocks it.
I tried to install rom manager but it's giving me parse errors as its not compatible.
What can I do here guys?
HELP no rom manager
Rom maager is now only available for 2.2 and higher. I have been looking for an older version to no avail. Please if anyone knows of a way to do this let me know. I have tried to fastboot CWM recovery doing it everyway I could find and it doesn't do anything. I have the Huawei Ascend and no matter what try I can't get it to load Rom Manager or CWM recovery, hen I reboot it just goes to the android 2A screen with only 4 options...rebot...load from SD card (which does absolutely nothing)...wipe data..wipe cashe. I see all these posts about going from 2.1 to gingerbread 2.3.4 there must be a way, any help would be greatful. Thanks

would you mind uploading a copy of rom manager here or somewhere else? i have the same problem but i don't have a backup of the apk. I would greatly appreciate it!
I have the same problem, I switched from Gingerbread to android 2.1 (Heroine rom for HTC hero, excellent&superfast rom by the way!) and now I can't install Rom manager anymore, also can't recover it from Titaniumbackup(Parsing errors). In market I can only buy the premium, since I'm travelling and am on a low budget the price is too high for me at this moment. Hope anyone has a solution for this!
Has anyone found a solution yet? I'm having the same problem with my Hero. Downgraded it to 2.1 and now I can't install rom manager.
The only thing that comes to mind is go to 4shared.com and search for an older version of rom manager apk
cwm version?
I am in the same situation. Just flashed to JFD. I bought the paid version of Rom Manager from the market. But when I open it, it tells me that its just the license key and I need to install the free version for it to work. Of course I can't dl the free version.
I didn't see anything in the paid version description that said needed 2.2. I really think if the paid version can't be used on 2.1 it should not show up in market for me either. Spent 6 bucks for nothing.

Guys I had this problem too. Just go on 4shared.com and search rom manager apk. go through every file til you see one that was uploaded over a year ago. And make sure its the apk and not the premium licence. This apk should install on your phone. Good Luck!!
ROM Manager for 2.1 update1
What is the latest version of rom manager (free) B4 it went to 2.2 being the oldest that can be used?
You can download the update.zip from my signature and put it on your internal card labeled Update.zip. Boot into recovery and scroll down to Reinstall Packages. Hit it. It will cycle through and come back to the blue (stock) recovery. Scroll down to Reinstall Packages again and hit it again. The recovery will go from Stock (blue) to CWR (green). From there you can load up whatever ROM you have on your sd cards.
Far far easier than tring to find an old outdated ROMManager.apk

After a hellacious day trying to get my phone back working from a mother of all eff ups after trying to install CM9, I have been in the same position as others trying to get the phone rooted and a custom recovery installed.
I tried your update.zip and it doesn't work.
Any other ideas?
Are you on 2.1? It should work just fine. I think that there might be an issue with the Kies stock 2.2 where it may not work. Not sure since I have never even seen stock 2.2.
In fact I just used the update.zip last weekend to come off Zen and test a 2.2 I am working on. Where are you getting stuck at?

Anyone who yet found a rom manager for 2.1, I have the same problem and all old mirrors are offline. I only managed to root my phone, but installing CWM by adb fails, so this seems my only option.
http://www.mediafire.com/?le792b932cd4ac9 should work for you i tried it not to long ago on a old hawei ascend i found

[Q] Which CWM? Why won't new version install? (But old works)

Have an AT&T Galaxy S2 running CM9 nightly 6/21, and have Rom Manager premium.
When I run the "Flash Clockwork Mod Recovery" i see 5 options, the first is "Samsung AT&T GalaxyS2" and the last is "Samsung GalaxyS2 (SGH-I777).
Well, I am on AT&T, and I have the SGH-I777 which I thought was only AT&T, so not sure which is which. Why are there two? Which is right?
But read on...
If I flash the first then Rom Manager says I have 5.0.2.6.
If I flash the last then Rom Manager says I have 5.8.1.8.
After flashing either one, when I boot into recovery (with the power button) the version running is 5.5.0.4, at least that's what it says at the top.
So I looked at the web site, and decided to try downloading from there the touch version showing as file Recovery-Clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-GalaxyS2ATT.zip. I flashed it in CWM. When it flashes for that point in time it goes into a touch version. If I reboot, I'm back to 5.0.2.6.
No matter what I flash, I end up with 5.0.2.6. That's not bad, it works, I never have trouble installing CM9 versions either manual downloads or Rom Manager invoked installs.
But what's going on -- isn't doing the update of CWM supposed to, when I boot into recovery, show that version?
I've tried a bunch of different searches, and cannot find anything specifically about flashing CWM not working, at least not in this vein. And I can't find anywhere that distinguishes why there are two almost identical CWM's out there, but very different versions (and no, not talking about touch vs. non-touch -- talking about the way they are labeled above for this phone).
I think rom manager does it weird by flashing another recovery on top of what you already have so you then have two different ones on your phone. Another reason not to use it.

I've never used ROM Manager to do anything on this phone but manage backups but mine reads the same way. It tells me I have that 5.8 version installed when I'm actually running 5.5.0.4 that came with my roms kernel.
Basically don't use Rom Manager. The GS2 does things differently than most phones concerning recovery and Rom Manager can't work with it.

I found this but havent tried it yet.
So what is the right way to change recovery versions? Or should one not?
This version I presume came from when I rooted, long ago? There is not on in cm9's install right?
If you're running CM9 just leave it alone. There's no need to update it. The only way to change it is to switch kernels or build your own. Recovery doesn't live in its own space on this phone like it does for every other device, its part of the kernel on the GS2.

Removing TWRP Recovery

New to this - I really apologize if this has been covered before but I've been searching all evening and not coming up with a definitive answer.
What's the easiest way to remove a custom recovery (like twrp) and go back to stock? Still on the stock rom, just have custom recovery. I manually deleted a nandroid backup using a file manager from my sd card yesterday, and now when booting into recovery it sits on the twrp screen for easily 10-15 minutes. I can't fathom why that would have an effect on the start up time but that's all I can think of that changed. I've tried re-installing twrp via goomanager - no change.
Is there a way to do so without using usb? I'm curious because the first S4 I had, the usb port went bad after only a month and I was in a panic that I wouldn't be able to get it back to stock (until I finally got it to work long enough to flash it with odin). Really don't want to risk that happening again.
Looking to run some roms once I think I understand at least half of what I'm doing, but trying to be cautious. I'd like to keep twrp but I want to make sure it's working right by loading a clean install of it.
Thanks in advance.
A lot of users are experiencing the lag with TWRP version installed by Goo Manager - (TWRP 2.6.0).
The link below has a flashable zip to version 2.5.0.2, this version seems to be stable and doesn't lag at the TWRP screen for most people including myself.
I would try flashing this and I think it will solve your problem.

Thank you. I'm a little stumped on what to do with the zip now that I have it though and all my searching for "loading recovery with goo manager" just shows the method to load the newer version. Or if you're supposed to load it via pc, what do you use? Odin doesn't like any of those file types.
Sorry if this is a dumb question. Probably just not searching for the right thing.

You flash it via recovery. Put in your sdcard/internal boot to recovery amd use the install zip option. Navigate to where it is and flash away.

Yes, it is a flashable zip, just flash it in the recovery you have now.
I found this post based on the OP's original question, "how to remove TWRP recovery".
I have been flashing rooted ROMs for a while now via ODIN, but am just now starting to foray into the realm of custom recoveries. Before I install TWRP though, I wanted to know how to remove it just in case something ever goes wrong. That is, I've been avoiding the use of a custom recovery so far because if something ever happened to my device, I could just flash the stock ROM, and having already used Triangle Away, Samsung will never be the wiser and would service my device, but with a custom recovery installed, they would be able to see I'm not running totally stock.
So, is there a way to completely return my device to 100% stock after installing TWRP? And if so, how would I go about doing that?
My device is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-N8013, currently running a root injected stock ROM, 4.1.2
EDIT: I just noticed that this is in the S4 forum, which my N8013 obviously is not, but the answer to my question should be the same regardless, yes?

Thanks Gadget, Hex. TWRP 2.5.0.2 works great. But just for future reference, is the only way to revert to the stock recovery by flashing a stock device image via odin over usb? So if the USB port were to fail entirely, I would be SoL - correct?

YP-G70 US Install PAC-rom

Hello,
So, I have gone cross-eyed trying to sort out how to Flash PAC-rom to my SGP 5.0.
I've manged to get Clockworkmod working on it and I am running Clockworkmod 5.x.x.x (seeing as there is no official support for the G70). When I try installing the latest PAC-rom nightly I get a "signature verification failed". So, I did some more digging and found that I should try installing CM9 first and then try installing PAC-rom. I did that and I still get the same verification error.
So... I am lost. Any guidance from the community would be greatly appreciated, also... I am very green so please use small words and basically treat me like an idiot.
Thanks,
TF
Here is a pic of the error I am getting.
I've tried Superoneclick to root my device, that is were this error came from. Then I tried Framaroot, I get the same error when using Clockworkmod.
Thanks,
TF

I'm not 100% on this but I think the main point of having CWM is that it doesn't do "signature verification". That way you can flash stuff that not officially "signed".
Here is the procedure for installing ROMS if your on Gingerbread.
Download an Odin flashable kernel, either Entropy's for US or Rumirand's for INT.
Flash it
If you are going to flash jellybean make sure you wipe system along with the normal wipes.
Flash your ROM in CWM.
Now what!?
So... I downloaded Entropy's (see Link below) .tar kernel and used Odin to flash it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445840
After that finished I was able to Flash the PAC-Rom (pac_venturi_nightly-20131007.zip), followed by the Gapps Core (9-19_Gapps_Core_4.3_signed.zip) and lastly the Kernel (cm-10.2-USA-Kernel-REV2.zip).
Unfortunately, something went pear-shaped because I don't have the Play Store app so I can't install Clockworkmod (at least the way I know how anyway) so I can't try to reinstall the GApps core to get the Play store. I suspect that I am doing something horribly wrong and have managed to make this harder then it should be. Please help.
Thanks,
TF

Rom Manager and ClockworkMod are 2 different things. Entrophy's kernel has ClockworkMod in it. Rom Manager does not work for the galaxy player 5.0, afaik. If you don't have the Play Store then there is something wrong with Gapps. Please read the PAC dev's thread for instructions on flashing.

Well, to the best of my knowledge... Rom Manager was what I installed from the play store when I searched for Clockworkmod. Unfortunately neither survived the Flashing of Pac-rom so I can't attempt a reinstall of the GApps zip like I did the last time. I am still digging through the Dev forum so see if anything about how to reinstalling Gapps, but so far no luck. I suspect I'll need to find the ROM Manager apk and install it manually so that I can get this to work again.

DO NOT use ROM manager. It is not compatible with the Galaxy Players and you could end up bricking your device. If you are currently running PAC, you can get into clockworkmod using the reboot -> recovery option. From here you can flash gapps.

Whoops... well.... ummmm.... I did install ROM Manager from an APK and it says that its Recovery Setup is ClockworkMod 5.x.x.x. It seemed to work just fine and I was able to re-flash the GApps zip and get the Play Store back. Just lucky I guess?
Somethings to mention
I am currently running the *Build-1_20131006-090046 of PAC-Rom.
The OTA Rom Updates says that the "Server Is Borked or Tyler Broke Something".
I've tried putting an SD card in the expansion slot but it never comes up. I am going to boot into Linux today and try wiping the card and see if the SGP 5 will accept it and format it for use. Right now all it does is crash out when I try to view the statistics...the error given is "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped. Blame Tyler.".
And sometimes when I come out of an app the desktops are all blank, no icons or clock anywhere. I have to either launch another app of go to the drawer for things to come back.
Sorry if I am being a pain, I truly wish to learn and be helpful... I am just really green at the moment.
Thanks,
TF

I think I figured something out. I did install ROM Manager, but somehow I had also installed ClockworkMod. So, when I rebooted into recovery I was actually booting into ClockworkMod thus "doing it right" but going about it all wrong.
So I have since managed to flash my SGP 5.0 back to FacSpec so I am ready to try again... now that I am a little smarter... I hope.

[Q] Cyanogen Mod ..

I ROOTed my stock GT-I9300, backed up EFS, made a NANDroid backup via CWM.
Now I would like to install Cyanogen Mod Rom(NO TOUCHWIZ!), to say the least is most optimized as I heard from people.
The reason I want Cyanogen Mod is simple, no annoying Sluggish TouchWiz S*** that Samsung doesn't seem to understand, it's poorly optimized that's the main reason there's no 4.4 for GT-I9300.
I went to www.cyanogenmod.org but the way they install it now is well kind of awkward..
Anyone tried that? Cause on their Download page I didn't see any GT-I9300.
P.S.
No Bloatware! Minimal at the very least.

I really don't know what your problem is. If you go to cyanogenmod.com it gives you the option to download an installer that does all the work for you. I would recommend this option if you don't know what you are doing. Otherwise flash cmw boot loader and download cm11 trough the download page. I9300 is in the list on the left of the page.
