[Q] SGS2 overwritten bootloader, but still in download mode - Rescue possible? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
i flashed a kernel with "BOOTLOADER" button in Odin. Odin stopped at "sending zImage", of course it did not work. I did not reboot since then, phone is still in download mode and is recognized by Odin. I tried to reflash a correct bootloader, but Odin stops at "SetupConnection..". I tried all USB ports, different computers and even heimdall within linux. Heimdall fails at "Initializing protocol". Do you have any ideas what i can try until i plug the battery? I bet its hard bricked after then...Any help is appreciated...

I think it will be ok, but what you can do
Remove the cable, restart the Odin, plug in cable and if it recognizes, than you can flash a complete Rom to be safe.
But wait for few more posts..

1) Try a new micro usb cable.
2) Verify the MD5 of the bootloader which you downloaded.
3) Try a different ODIN.
4) Remove the External SD Card if any.
Report back with the results.

Hi,
thank you for your replies. I borrowed the original usb cable which was in the samsung box from a friend. Still no luck. That was my last chance, i already tried different Odin versions but forgot to mention. I pulled the battery and crossed my fingers for about 5 minutes Restarted and the bootloader was okay!! Somehow Odin did not destroy it while flashing the kernel...I will never ever touch this tool again, this was a very hard day for me  Thanks again for your replies!

HELP!

I might have accidentally bricked my SGS 2. I get a screen saying:
"firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again"
with a mobile phone and a computer logo with a Yellow triangle in between.
I know abt Rooting and ROM flashing etc and has been doing it for the last couple or years.
I flashed Franklin's XXKG3 Kernels, and before I could flash Chainfire's XXKG3 kernel, the USB ports refused to recognize my handset. I can still go into download mode but the Odin or Samsung Kies etc. won't do nothing.
Keeps saying "USB Device not recognized"
Please help!!!!

I had the same problem on my SGS4g after updating to a leaked 2.3.4 rom, which would not make phone calls. Tried to use heidmall to downgrade by loading a new rom. After installing the usb driver as described here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14798367&postcount=1 . After reboot I get the error screen <phone..!..Computer> "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again". I then took the following steps.
I came across this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S_Series#Bricked_Screen Under the bricked section it mentions a couple things to try. I the reboot cycle with a couple of times and kept on getting the same screen. Still no go.
I took Odia's advice an did a complete removal of all usb drivers as mentioned and reinstalled kies. This was key in getting odin to recognize the phone again.
My solution:
I try Odin again to try to get it to recognize my phone. I open odin with the usb connected in this state and it is not recognized. I pull battery, it boots to error screen. I restart odin and then plug in the usb and it is recognized. I was then able to load my pit, pda, phone, csc back onto the phone with odin. The first time it tried to load the data it failed, the second time it worked!
Interestingly I never got the "Download Screen". I was still on the mentioned error screen, yet odin was able to still see the phone. The status bar still showed up on the error screen as the fresh rom was being loaded.
I thought I was totally bricked, but this method worked in my case. Hope something similar might work for you.
I still don't know I would get this error screen and have to go through this after loading the required usb driver for heimdall? Any ideas?
OMG! It's WORKING!
Thanks a lot to you all guys for the co-operation....
So, what did I do???? I uninstalled Kies and re-installed a couple of times but it won't access it. Tried Odin in all possible ways, No success. While playing and after ordering a "Jig" from some1 in USA,
I thought of something else and while the phone still being connected with the pc, I ran SuperOneClick, but it went on saying waiting for the device,.... I accidentally or in frustration hit the "HOME" button and it started doing something, USB drivers and Modem drivers installed on PC. Then I started Odin and the port went "Yellow". And I flashed it with the XXKG3.....
OMG! I'm so much relieved!!!!!!!! thanks God
thank you all too
Love your SGS2 and love God! Bless you all!

I love you man! You saved my phone and me!
So what have we learnt today? Don't go screaming "brick!" everytime you encounter a problem
I had a same issue yellow triangle between Phone and PC symbol...
followed this step .. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337
just did like this on very first step to get into odin mode hold vol down and power for longer then usual to get into odin mode and by pass that yellow triangle between Phone and PC screen and then follow rest of it same and easy as right clicking on desktop LOL!
From my experience, only true brick I encountered was when I messed with boot loaders. If the screen shows anything at all, Odin will recognize it. Glad to hear it's fixed

I´d tried to upgrade my Infuse SGH-i997 (AT&T) but I did something wrong and now the cell phone no work.
When it turn on says:
"firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again"
The computer recognize the cell phone but I don´t know what else I can do.
Any suggestion?
Can you get into download mode? If yes then reflash stock firmware using Odin

A bricked phone is a phone which will not respond. It maybe a soft brick or hard.
If you can get into download or recovery all you have to do is reflash. Wipe data & Cache. You will be up and running. If your phone is not recognised by your computer then reinstall kies.

Well, I got this same Firmware upgrade error. I can't get the computer to see it at all. It's almost like the USB port doesn't work anymore. I can get into the download mode but then it ends there. I cannot get into the bootloader at all. If I try, it goes to the error screen and if I boot normally, it goes to the error screen.

[q] help bricked my galaxy s2

I'm screwed! I was installing

CODE_I9100XWKE7_CL215725_REV02_user_low.tar.md5
GT-I9100-CSC-XEUKD1.tar
and something happened in Odin3 and it froze, so I took the battery out and tried to restart it and now all I get is a blue and yellow screen that says Android System Recovery. I don't have anything backed up on the device, it didn't come with a microSD card, and it now says
Deleting Cryption Meta Data
-Copying media files....
#manual mode#
updating application....
applying multi-CSC
and that's it. When I hit reboot phone all I get is a screen with a triangle and an android symbol and when I hit apply update from sd card, same symbol, even when I tried to put a .TAR file on my dad's EVO microSD card and put it into the galaxy.
Also, now the USB cable doesn't recognize my phone for some reason so when I go back to ODIN mode it says
Product name - GT-i9100
Custom Binary Download - Yes (1 count)
Current Binary Samsung Official
When I try to restart the phone, it goes straight to the android recovery screen mentioned above, where I can't do anything, and then when I get into the Odin mode, it won't recognize the usb cable so I can link up to Odin3 V1.83 on the computer. Also tried the usb cable on other computers didn't find my phone. Also, as of right now it's not rooted, but I was in the process of rooting, when I realized I missed the Over the Air step so when I Odin3 an insecure.TAR file the WIFI was broke so S2 Root kept saying can't find usb connection even though it was connected, and somewhere along the line when I was trying to restore the radio's by installing the 3 files above, when it crashed something messed up? Now I can't do anything. PLEASE HELP
SO I AM STUCK! Please help????????

I know this topic is old, but I am essentially having the same problem, I don't think it was really solved for the first guy, he can't flash the original rom using odin, because odin doesn't recognize his phone. And that is my issue too, I'm able to get into download mode/odin mode whatever, I plug in the usb cable, nothing, odin doesn't recognize it, I don't get a little sound like I do when I usually plug in a usb cable. Please any ideas would be appreciated.

Try different versions of Odin (for example, if you're using V4, try V3 1.3 & V3 1.85 and vice versa), try different USB ports (particularly if you're using a port attached to a hub. You need to use a powered port), different USB cables & finally different PC's/different versions of Windoze if you need to.
Also, when you fire up Odin, check Task Manager in Windoze & make absolutely certain Kies or any processes associated with it (if you're not sure what these are, Google/search for them) are not running at the same time. As I've said, you need the drivers that come with Kies to use Odin, but Odin won't work if Kies or anything associated with it is running at the same time.
Try uninstalling Kies on your PC (you need the drivers that come with Kies for Odin to work), rebooting, reinstalling Kies (search for it), rebooting.
If none of that works try cleaning the USB socket of the phone a Q-tip (cotton bud) & some isopropyl alcohol. And if that doesn't work, it might be a case of the USB circuitry of the phone being shot (unless you haven't tried the above steps or are not following the right steps, which we'll never know because we're not there with you).
Was also having the same problem. I managed to get round it by flashing an I9100 package with all the files (PDA, PHONE, BOOT, CSC, PIT) and ticking re-partition. If I'm right, this completely wipes the phone and flashes this over, basically leaving you on a fresh slate.
Hope I helped!

[Q] I9100G not recognized by Odin after flashing Custom ROM

Hi there,
I tried to flash CM 10.1 on my friend's Samsung Galaxy SII I9100G. I followed the Tutorial from the CM's wiki, but it didn't worked because I got errors from Heimdall. After a few minutes with google I tried Odin and it worked without any Problems. After flashing cm-10.1-20130304-EXPERIMENTAL-i9100g-M2.zip and related gapps the phone was stuck in a bootloop. After 10 minutes I pulled out the battery and plugged it back in. Since then, the phone always booted into recovery automatically. And I'm able to boot into download mode aswell.
But the phone isn't recognized by Odin or any other tool. I've reinstalled the samsung phone drivers serveral times. I tried it with Kies, without Kies, with driver packages from XDA.. Nothing worked. If I remove the battery and hold Vol Down+Home+Power while plugging in the USB cable my PC recognizes some devices but cannot install the driver because after 2 seconds the devices is unplugged again.
I think the battery is too low to establish a USB connection. I will charge the battery tomorrow at work and give it another try.
Any advice for the whole problem? Is it all related to the low battery?
Kind regards
fzninuse

A clean reinstall of Kies didn't helped.. Even it isn't recognized on another PC. Because I can access recovery mode (CWM) and download mode I guess it's no brick.. just an driver issue?! I tried several USB Ports and USB cables.. nothing helped..
Can it be caused by a wrong kernel? Is it possible to flash a kernel with CWM?
Of course, flash the zip version of the kernel.
Make sure it's neant for I9100G

Even after flashing another kernel the phone boots directly into recovery..
After trying several ROMs and Kernels I guess it's a bootloader failure.. Because there is no possibillity to flash a new bootloader via CWM and I get no USB connection, I am screwed... =/
No you are not, keep trying.
Other(s) PC might do the trick.
Also get a couple of Odin versions.
Get new cables, genuine s2s that is.
And keep reinstalling kies.
I tried it with another USB cable and connected the phone without the battery. Now I get a "OMAP4430" Device in the device manager which disappears after 2 seconds and reappers 5 seconds later and after 2 seconds it's gone again.. Why the processor is recognized by my PC and not the smartphone itself?!
I will try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1701471&page=3
Setting up a XP VM right now..
try removing kies completely and install only the drivers
also get a new usb and try connecting to a different port
also do u have ur phone in warranty ?

Make sure you are in odin mode on the device. I came from HTC One and didn't put my device in Odin mode. Duh.. right? lol.
You can get into Odin mode by doing "adb reboot-bootlaoder"
for the best results:
1.use an official Samsung cable
2. unplug all unneeded usb devices
3.reboot into download mode again
4.connect to a usb 2.0 port on the back of the pc
5.run odin as an admin
if that dose not work, make sure kies is removed, and re-install the Samsung drivers,
reboot pc, and try again.
solved similar problem...
reboot your phone into download mode, but yet not proceed, plug into pc, open odin (as administrator), put the firmware files in their respective places, and finally press vol up to proceed in download mode and press start, it must solve, if all else does not help .. hugs
Hope this helps, if so please press "thanks" ..

Do one thing when you are trying to connect in downloading , just make sure kies is not running at background.
Thing is kies blocks that connection which you are trying to make. It worked for me as well. All the best.

This worked for me after having so many problems. Nobody was clear on how to fix it. I had soft bricked my phone. It wouldn't connect to Kies or allow any pit or rom being flashed to it. Everything would fail. I tried doing what you said and it worked. I always got the errors 'No pit partition' etc.
I plugged in the USB without the battery in.
Phone wouldn't switch on into recovery without battery in so I put it back in.
I then took it out and Odin wouldn't connect to it and start the process without the battery in so I put it back in.
I loaded up the pit file and started it! You should have seen my face! haha! It worked!
It booted up! Hooray!
I switched it off and booted it in recovery mode.
Installed new rom (hopefully this won't break)
Thank goodness for that. I feel your pain guys. If you need any help just message me.

[Q] Soft-bricked, two versions of ODIN hang, out of ideas

I'm running a Samsung Galaxy S2 (SGH-I777) with the Shostock 3 ROM using the instructions from GalaxyS2Root (which I have since learned was not wise, but hey...you live and learn.)
Last night I plugged it in to a new charger, and when I woke up the phone was frozen on the Galaxy S2 Splash screen (the one with the yellow exclamation mark and the model number). I've tried several things to get it back, but nothing seems to work. I have tried:
•Getting back to stock using the I777UCKH7-CL503881-No-BL download from the "getting back to stock" thread at XDA but it hangs on the "cache.img" step, and now my phone shows the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue..." screen. I tried this several times with Kies installed, on, off, uninstalled and drivers only, and nothing made it past that step.
•Installing the latest firmware from sammobile.com via Odin 3.07. It gets to the "factoryfs.img" step and then gives me " Complete(Write) operation failed. All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)" despite re-installing drivers, switching ports, and doing it without the battery in. Also now the box with the phone's ID is blue, not yellow, despite further driver re-installs.
•Installing the Siyah Kernel, also via Odin, where the same error message occurs after "NAND WRITE START."
I have spent the better part of my day working on this, and I am completely out of ideas. As of right now, when the battery is in the phone it automatically starts itself up to the "Phone > ! > computer" firmware error screen recommending I go KIES, which does not recognize the phone (And, I have been turning off during ODIN runs and is currently uninstalled because I downloaded the S2 drivers directly).
I've been told that as long as I can get into download mode (which I still can, though I can't get to recovery) there is still some hope, so if anyone has any ideas I would be extremely grateful.
First, the reason for failed odin flash can be one of many things, such as bad usb port (on computer or on phone), or bad usb cable. Try other ports, other cables, even another pc. Also, Odin 3.07 may be a problem. Odin3 v1.85 is known to work with the I-777. I've had one person switch from v3 to v1.85 to get a flash to go through. And sometimes when there is a problem with odin flashes failing, multiple tries will eventually result in a pass.
The following is for recovering from nand read/write corruption on the I777. This may or may not be your problem, but it's worth a try.
1)Go to this post and download the Tar version of Siyah 2.6.14 Kernel. Flash it in PDA without ticking Re-Partitioning.
2) Successful? Nice. Next, flash the full stock Gingerbread distribution from the Download Repository, I777UCKH7 including the bootloaders and everything, in the PDA slot.
3) If that is successful you are done.
If it is not, then:
4) Download the SBL Bootloader from the Download Repository. Flash it as PDA in ODIN, without ticking Re-Partitioning.
5) Flash the Kernel, as in step 1.
6) Flash the full stock Gingerbread distribution, as in step 2.

Flashing the SBL Bootlaoder from Odin 1.85 works and allows me to see the Galaxy S2 logo screen again instead of the Firmware error.
After that though, flashing the Siyah 2.6.14 kernel hangs up at the "STARTING NAND WRITE" step and stays there until I unhook it, which takes me back to the firmware error and requires me to flash the SBL again.
I only have one USB cable, but I typically use it for file transfer and it worked with the SBL flash, but that may be the culprit.
Also, when I hold the volume buttons and restart, it goes straight into downloading mode and does not allow me to choose to factory wipe the phone. I feel like if I could get that menu back, it could possibly solve the problem.
Thanks for the help so far, I'm glad I can at least get back here. If I don't have the original USB cable, how can I get another one and be sure it will be sufficient for the job?

For the instant download mode, make sure no cable is plugged in and clean your micro usb port. Also glad to see you got help

Update so far:
I cleaned the USB port, which did turn out to be full of lint and other crud. I still can't get it to flash anything but the bootloader.
However, the phone will do nothing at all when the battery is in, and only works when plugged into the computer with no battery inside. I had been getting battery temperature errors, so I think it being kind old, a cheap USB cable, and the port being dirty for who knows how long probably fried that battery. I'm gonna get a new battery and a new cable and see if that helps me out.

Well, the new battery came in and still nothing. The screen will turn on again, but otherwise the behavior is the same. Except for a new cable, which I'll get tomorrow, I'm out of ideas.
