does anyone know why sometimes pictures on S3 come in as short videos even though they are clearly pictures?
i have found a work-around for this little problem, ill explain it in detail for those that have this same problem. I would love to hear some input
OK, so first i noticed that this problem was occurring between me and my roommate ( we both have s3's) when we would send pictures to test out our new phones. We were sending pictures directly from the default messenger app, we were both using the attachment button (paperclip button). It wasn't until today that i realized that the problem would disappear when we would use the photo gallery app to send the pictures by using the share function and using the messenger app. If youre having the same problem i hope this helps!
This was a Samsung thing that started with the GS2. It was fixed by the time ICS was released for it. Now, they seem to have forgotten they fixed it and have broken it again for the GS3.
I use GoSMS, so I don't really have to deal with it.

I just tried this with Qik and have the same result.

Did you try uninstalling and re-installing the app?
This is a known software issue. Tango works for me but Fring doesn't. Something about that software expecting a Sense camera and overcompensating.
Fring told me:
We are aware of the issue and working to solve it in the near future.

Supposedly you can edit your build.prop to
MANUFACTURER: Samsung
MODEL: Nexus S
to make it work.
phew. i figured it was something with the apps software. but there was that little voice in my mind that told me i was missing something that was right in front of me in the menu options.
never helps trying to video chat when youve had a few drinks at the watering hole lol. i kept spinning the phone around and everyone was laughin at/with me
update:
I downloaded the update from Tango last night and everything works great now. they have the videos working right for the Photon now
I'm pretty sure this is the same on all the Samsung phones, but if I get a Picture via MMS, I cannot zoom in or out on the picture. The only way I have found to resize the thing is to first save it then go into gallery and then you can zoom in. Anyone have a better way?
And yes, I have used other SMS app's like Go and it works much better, but I happen to like the stock Message app, except for this non feature.
Yes, I find it extremely annoying after switching from SE Neo. I would also like to know if solution exists...
I've been using Skype on my Flyer since last November with great results. I bought my GF one for her Xmas too and we've always had good quality calls when I'm away from home.
She made the mistake of doing the update to HC a few months ago and since then our calls (from her side) were of poor quality - the video image was more pixelated and the video appears to jump back in time every so often.
I just updated to the later version of Skype the other week and now it appears that my video quality also sucks. It was excellent before.
Any ideas?
I had to remove and re-install Skype tonight as we couldn't get a video call to work at all....the cameras on both tablets would not activate and we were both left with black/blank screens.
Same here on my View, quality has been poor recently.
Plus I can't stay logged in for more than 20 minutes. It automatically logs me out and closes by itself and when I try to log back in I have to redo my password. I tried unistalling and then reinstalling but still the same.
Does anyone have the same log in problems as I do?
Have you contacted the creator of the App?
I have another issue with Skype that is strange, most of the time I launch the app and it logs in but no contact show up - turns out that it will somehow login without my password. It's not really logged in but for some reason a blank version of Skype is running - I need to log out and then login with the password and it's back to normal.
I've become used to this but it is a pain.
I left feedback for Skype complaining about the recent lack of quality of calls on both Windows and Android platforms.
Skype used to be by far the best option out there on Windows but recently I've been using MSN and Yahoo as the quality is vastly superior.
Is this what happens when Microsoft get involved?
One other thing that I noticed last night is that when the call starts my video is upside down (in my view). I then have to rotate the tablet to portrait mode and flip back to landscape to get it oriented properly. Anybody else having this problem? The other party sees my video in the correct orientation.
I've had my S3 for a couple weeks now and my wife is picking one up this evening. I've been looking for a decent (working) application that will do video chat with some of the more known video chat sites (Skype, Oovoo, Gtalk, etc) but so far the three or four i've tried are currently not working.
Has anyone found a working video chat application that will work with our front side camera that is compatible with
So far I've tried:
Skype - call works, can see other users but the app won't activate our camera (lot of posts complaining about this on the skype forums but no official response to date)
Oovoo - application will not even install from the play store (not supported on your device message) - side loading resulted in very sketchy results but the cameras themselves still are not functional
GTalk - I briefly tried this but couldn't get the video to actually connect. Found other posts on other forums with people complaining about the same issue.
I know that the T-mobile flavor comes with Qik's however that doesn't seem to support anything but others using the "Qik" service.
I'm sure these will receive more support as the phone matures but this was one of the points my wife was looking forward to in order to chat w/ her family.
Thanks
Have you tried Tango?
Google Talk works absolutely fine for me with both front and rear camera and special effects etc.
Tried G+ hungout

I'll have to take a look at tango and try gtalk again.
If there is at least one working one that should at least appease the wife long enough for the other ones her family uses to catch up w/ the phone....
Thanks guys
oovoo
I have not been able to try oovoo, however it can be downloaded from the Samsung apps, app that comes installed on the sgs 3, you may find that this works ok
I use Skype with the front and rear cameras absolutely perfect on my s3. Try reinstalling and on the first startup there's a pop up that states its not a supported device but it will attempt to use the cameras if u grant it permission. Click yes and try it.

Yahoo Messenger and Google Talk worked for me. I haven't tried anything else yet.
Op
I have yet to come across a video chat app that doesn't work.
If your having problems I read somewhere that people with this problem reinstalled viber on their phone and everything magically started working.
Don't know if it's true but it might work.

Hello everyone. I just got this phone the other day after returning the galaxy s5. I am loving it but I have one issue and maybe I'm just doing something wrong.
Everytime I take a picture in the camera app after tapping the check button, the camera closes and I return to the home screen. Does anyone else have this problem or is there something obvious I'm doing wrong?
Not normal. If the phone is stock (unrooted, etc.) I would try a factory reset (backup any personal data first) and see if the problem persists.
Only time I see a check in camera app is when sending picture via mms and it asks where I want to send [email protected],camera etc... if this is case of attaching picture directly from camera to an mms then this is a normal function, if taking a picture and it just closes then this is not normal reaction
Well it seems that the problem has resolved itself. I was just about to post a screen shot of the check mark so you guys could see it and then it just starting working as normal. Thanks for the responses and I'll post here if it comes up again.
Ok the problem returned... I showed the issue to a buddy who has the same phone and it also turned out that I was missing several options on the camera. I did a factory reset and the problem persisted.
I think I found the issue... I was using Google Now Launcher. Apparently that launcher doesn't play well with the camera. I uninstalled the launcher and voila, all the features (video, zoe, dual camera, etc) are back and the camera no longer closes after taking a pic.
Anyone else want to test this theory and see if happens?
confirmed issue and workaround
Hi there,
I can confirm that the Now launcher uses the native Google camera instead of the Zoe camera. I have also found that from the lock screen with the now launcher installed, unlocking by pulling the camera icon opens the full HTC zoe-enabled camera again. I find this super annoying as I'd like to have Google launcher and have the camera work properly. Anyone know a fix for this other than my workaround?
Ditto for T-Mobile HTC One (M7)
There's a lot I really like about the Google Launcher, but this just drives me nuts. I didn't really understand the workaround suggested here ( though I have no doubt it works). But the suggestion sounded on target. So, I went into my app list and shared it from there. It didn't do the funky stuff any more. I wonder if there's a setting to change that behavior: like someone thought, Hey, take a picture and go back to our regular programming? It's a shame because I really feel that the Google camera takes better picture.
In any case, just to let folks know that this is a real problem. The OP was on target.
To anyone else having this problem that does not use Google Now Launcher, another app that causes this is Omni Swipe. The default camera button in the tools section isn't the right camera (not sure what it's trying to access but still). If you add the correct camera app to the app section, it'll be fine.
Yes, this solved my problem as well. I went back to the default launcher and now the camera is working fine
